We hope you enjoyed exploring and discovering the local history in the communities of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Tuia Matauranga GeoTour has now ended. Thank you to the community for all the great logs, photos, and Favorite Points over the last 30 months. It has been so fun!
After a challenging time making our way through Auckland with our big rig, we were pleased to find space to park it at Bastion Point. We enjoyed the memorial area and the views, got the maths right and found the cache relatively quickly. We also enjoyed the company of a fantail at GZ. All good here, codeword noted. A fave for the area and the creative container. TFTC Team Welsh!
Super cool puzzle. My sons and I really enjoyed this one. Heaps of sunflowers at the memorial- so pretty. TFTC
Recently I came by to grab an Adventure Lab Cache nearby but saw this and thought I'd get the info. It was rather quick to grab, but the weather wasn't great so I saved the cache for another day to help continue my streak. Today things worked out so I stopped here on my way home from work. Straightforward find though the closest parking was taken up by some people who were luckily just out of sight of the GZ. Quick find, though there's some evidence of some previous tenants in the cache. Thanks!
(# 7143) On a trip to retrieve the Auckland/Northland Geotour caches (TMGT/PWGT). Day 1 was a morning flight to Auckland from Wellington then driving around Auckland to grab the required caches. Took longer than expected but got there in the end. Just impacted the non geotour caches I wanted to get. The weather up north had a few very heavy showers A quick find after solving the puzzle before the trip. Thanks for bringing me here.
Took me and my car a while to find but we found it! Was super fun to find. Forgot a pen but found it with my partner and two nieces TFTC
What an awesome location!
And a really good puzzle and good GZ for the final.
Didn’t have a pen so took a photo of the log to prove the find. Will send to CO.

Came out here to collect a few caches and saw that this mystery was out here so decided to solve it and find the cache while heading down to GZ I had seen that this one has a few favourite points so rushed even more to GZ. While arriving i saw something hanging and I was amazed. Liked the effort of this cache.

I am out and about for an after work walk this afternoon, looking to finish off the Round the Bays adventure lab I started last week. I climbed up the hill from mission bay and made my way over to the monument of interest. No problem decoding the and I soon had a likely looking set of final coordinates. I wandered off and soon found myself at GZ. The GPSr was jumping around a bit and I missed the hide on the first pass, but got it on the second. A nicely constructed final container; favourite point applied. I signed the log and noted down the required information. Cheers for the field puzzle cache placement!
Visited here today to replace the log book and the container. I'm still flummoxed as to why the container went???? Very random....and makes me question who would do something like that. Can imagine a used sistema would fetch very much on the open market. Please make sure you do the container up properly to ensure it stays dry.
From Mt Hobson its across the city to Joseph Savage Memorial. What an awesome place. Gathered the info for this multi, then checked out the memorial. Now off to the final to leave our calling card. Cheers. But run out of time to explore this area more.
Last cache for today. time to get back to Zara for dinner and an early evening.
Day 4 - Sunday 23 January - Browns Island was on the radar for the morning with the team 'DONE BY ONE'. The afternoon was again running all over Auckland collecting some GTs and scooping up a few others along our journey. The LAB around the bays was also in our sights.
God I hate these spagetti motorway intersections. Lenny was not much help.
Zara, Toby and I are on our North Island expidition for a couple of weeks. Got The Seagnoid along for the first 4 days, heading to the Auckland Mega. PWGTs and TMGTs are on the radar for this trip. Lots of driving on gravel roads and visited lots of amazing places on our 6000km road trip snagging 200+ caches along the way. Visiting Cape Reinga, Bay of Islands, Gisborne and White Rock along our journey. Another awesome trip. Thanks to all CO's.

Not able to hunt for this one as muggles are picnicking at GZ (and have been for at least an hour).
We took the long way to go to the Memorial, with the marathon, the road was closed. That was a lovely walk on the road tough Great place to stop and reflect, as well as enjoy the views. At GZ, as mentioned, the outside container is fine, but the box is missing, there is only a zipbag with a logbook (and the code). The logbook is getting quite damp. But I could still write my name in it. Thanks for the cache!
One of the primary goals of this trip is to collect all the GT caches, so this afternoon Taybeedragon and I set out to get all the Auckland ones. That is some very inefficient caching - driving all the way across Auckland for a single cache and then all the way across in another direction for another single cache. Very impressed with the gardens here. I'm not surprised really, after having created a number of caches that relate to events form Savage's time I know know quite a bit about his work (and was rather surprised at how sketchy the cache page here is on his accomplishments). Awesome place, gets a favourite.
Day 3. Day after the Mega. In a lot of ways it didn't feel like a mega, but one of the things that did have that mega feel was being able to do the morning trip to Brown's Island. After spending 4 hours walking through knee deep kikuyu grass I am walking noticeably slower now - that wading really wears out the legs! Now for a afternoon of random cachy bits.

Up here for an Adventure Lab stage. Could not not pick up this one too.
Savage must have been a very great man to get a whole park and memorial like this. A shining beacon of light through the night.
Got the numbers and then walked down to GZ.
For some reason there is a tupperware lid in the outer container, but no tupperware container. The logbook is a bit moist and needs some love from CO probably.
Kia ora! ???? Paldies! ????

Found the cache easily enough. As per the last log the cache was missing (lid was there) and no logbook. Had a look around and found the logbook on the ground, completely soaked. Got the codeword and managed to add my name to the book. Placed back where it should go.
Travelled up from Dunedin for my first Mega event and wanting to sign off some geotour caches as well in Auckland and Northland.
Thanks for the cache, Team Welsh

Completed puzzle last year but never got round to the final hunt. Nice hide, reminiscent of one near the Harbour Bridge. Sending c/o a pic as the actual log and container are missing.
Geocaching is not advisable during Level 4 lockdown.

I chose this one as my cache of the day, and it was a beautiful day for it too. I had never been here before, so thank you for bringing me here, as well as for the excellent puzzle and the cache itself. It didn't take long to figure out but I stayed here a while enjoying the sunshine and views. TFTC
I loved my visit here. These gardens are magnificent but the images of those Bastion Point protests are etched into my memory - what a contrast to the peacefulness of today. No trouble finding the numbers and these took me to a very likely spot. I was a bit put off by the rat running up the tree I wanted to investigate. I couldn't spot anything! The batteries on the GPS were getting low so after going back to the car and changing them them the GPS lead me to quite a different spot where I quickly spotted the beautifully crafted cache. An easy all round favourite thanks Team Welsh. TFTC # 16,976
So pleased to find my 13,000the cache with my sister's field puzzle. Plus a great hide. T4tc (FP)
Such a fun little adventure! Took us a while to find it because my partners maps took us to the wrong place (wasn’t far off). Thanks for the cache, really enjoyed this one!
Thanks Team Welsh for the cache. It’s #1486 for us. We found your cache on 23 April 2021. For all sorts of reasons we’re awarding a Favourite Point. First time ever to Bastion Point, beautiful location, free parking at Final location and lastly a super cool hide. Thanks CO
Did a reconnaissance trip first to get the coordinates, then returned a few days later to find the cache, but left the coordinates at home! Third time was the charm though and I found it with far less than my usual faffing around and such a cute container!
Visiting Auckland for a family event. Enjoying the hustle and bustle for the weekend with lots going on. Visited Mission Bay as it was very hot and I needed a swim. Noted there was a nearby TMGT so climbed the hill to find it. We are very slowly collecting this series. No problems getting the coordinates and lovely the actual cache. Happy to add to the favourites. Thanks for the smiley.
A bit early for dinner so decided to come and give this easy mystery cache a go. Plenty of people around up here on Easter Friday but we gathered the information we needed and made a quick find of this very cute container. Gets a favorite from us. We hope we will find more of the tour caches.

I've probably only got a dozen or so TMGT caches so it would be a shame not to get one in my local city before the new tour kicks off. A very cute cache indeed! Tftc and series.
Busy at the memorial so took a photo and sat down to decifer the clue. Then back down the hill a-ways. GPS was a little off, but we've seen a couple of these cool little caches in Wellington and Masterton, so not too hard. No Weta in evidence today. Signed log and replaced where found. TFTC.
#8922. I was up in Auckland visiting family over New Year and it was time to head back south today. But still had to get a few of the geotour caches so set off to pick these up before leaving the city. Arrived at the carpark and headed off to the sunken gardens and the memorial obelisk to gather the necessary information. Quite a few people here today taking photos so had to wait to get in close enough to read the required information. Then sat down on the seat and did the calculations. Headed off to GZ where I soon spied a familiar object and had cache in hand. Signed the logbook, grabbed the code and replaced everything as found. Certainly stunning city and harbour views from up here and interesting history about the site. I remember the controversy over plans to put a housing development onto Bastion Point in 1970s and the iwi protests and occupation of their former tribal land.

Glad they kept this area as parkland as its a lovely spot for all to visit and enjoy, not just the rich and famous as would have happened if it had been smothered in houses. Thanks Team Walsh for setting up this puzzle and TMGT cache here at the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial. Favourite for the great views.

I had both the entire memorial area and GZ completely to myself! Flowers full of aroma. Down below was packed so was lovely up here. Storm coming in this arvo so a TMGT a bit closer to town was called for today and fingers crossed i get back before the worst of it. Thanks for being part of the TMGT series. Oh and a very impressive weta is now guarding GZ, thanks for giving it a home.
Quite amazing that 200000 people turned out for his funeral, given Auckland's population in 1940.
Here's a photograph of the caretaker.

Worked out the co-ordinates yesterday but Sunday is not a good day to go looking for the cache. Went back today and easily fount the interesting cache container. A fav point from me. Thanks CO for the interesting cache.
Came up for work, but had some spare time, so wandered along here to pick up my last Auckland TMGT cache.
A nice spot I never knew about (which isn't surprising, given I don't come here often) with a few people enjoying the sun. Quickly located the required information and off to the final I was able to quickly locate the nice hide.
TFTC Team Welsh, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 1 find(s) of 1 today, making this find #2341

I found this cache along with ten students who made up team "SJCgeocamp". We traveled from Hamilton today and came to find a bunch of geocaches around Auckland before heading north.
This is a hidden gem of a location. My wife lived in Kohimarama for a number of years and somehow we never discovered this great spot. It was a spectacular day and TVNZ had someone wandering around taking shots for the evening news/ weather. No issues with the numbers and a quick find at GZ. Another high quality hide. TFTC

Found it with Cyclicalcaching, interesting to visit as the place is relatively close to my work. We're on a trip to catch GT caches so I'm finally catching up with logging. Thanks!
I’ve been planning to come get this cache for quite some time, but I just never seem to get to this part of town.
Today I was passing, after a bit of confusion on what to do with the words, I had it solved and went to grab the final.
All good here, found a Weta in the box!
Thanks!

After a funfilled day finding all the caches of the Crayola Series, with other finds along the way we headed to a local event for a bite to eat. A couple of our group needed to find a couple of TMGT caches needed so off we trotted to them.
Sorted the numbers for the final of GZ. Off we went, torches in hand into the now closed for the night Reserve. Found the wee cache, another great build, thanks for the work involved Team Welsh tftc ..another fave!

So how to round out a full day? How about chasing the two TMGT caches we don’t have in Auckland, but wait till after the not-a-mega dinner event. One down, along with the sun, so now for a hunt after dark (like so many of our July trip). Found fairly quickly.
Thanks Team Welsh, time for an ice cream.
Out and about at the Mega that wasn't with a group of five crazy kiwi caching chicks, Ethness, Jude_E, Nosynel, GracieGPSfun and me. It was great to finally collect this in a dash across the city collecting caches as we went. Solved this one quickly and made the find. I never even knew this place was here. TFTC.
In Auckland for the mega that isn't! Five of us decided still to come and find a few caches as there will always be plenty more when the mega actually happens. Only 2 of us hadn't already been here. An interesting spot. Never been here before. Thank you, Team Welsh, for the informative cache. A nicely crafted hide as well.

I had no idea such a grand memorial existed. I had seen the Massey one on Wellington's Miramar Peninsula but that one is not so magnificent. I wonder if the current prime minister will be the subject of something similar if her popularity remains high.
I often mess up numbers with puzzles such as this but I got this one sorted straight away. My good form continued at the cache site where I tracked down the impressive container without too much bother.

Thanks what a lovely place to come. Unions were compulsory when I started work up to a certain pay rate. I have a degree so it wasn’t that low. I didn’t realise Joseph Savage was the leader that passed this law.
Found a bed for the night at the grand central railway station. Awesome beds and very quite for central Auckland.
Jumped on my bike for a lovely ride around the bay to this spot. Quickly grabbed the necessary clues and then the cache. Raced back across the bay to the other TMTG cache and checked out at just after 10am .
TFTC and a fun tour with NZ Bozzy

Great cache, took us a bit to find as gps was bouncing about but lots of fun. Tftc.
My first TMGT cache for a few months now so good to break the duck. We were on a bit of a Mission (Bay) today and this featured highly on the radar. We have been to this area before back in the day, last time we visited in 2008, but never ventured up here. Rectified today, thanks to Geocaching, and glad we did. A true gem of a place and beautiful place to be with historical evidence all around. Gathered the details and soon had the end in sight. After outwaiting some nearby mini-muggles I headed for GZ and snaffled this FP-worthy cache.
Thanks for bringing us up here and T F T C Team Welsh.
After a cache-less day over in the CBD yesterday in recognition of Olivia's 19th birthday, on the 19th no less I was keen to get out today for a leg-stretch and a few caches. Still not bothered about where we actually go, as we have so much choice, so much untapped potential in the area to choose from (for now, it changes after a while of living somewhere).

Tftc. Found once gps stopped bouncing us everywhere. Boy racers to contend with but found cache. A clever cache.
I'm pottering around Auckland waiting for Effie to finish work so we can go on a road trip. Lovely views from up here, another place I've never been before. Tftc
I was out visiting Kelly Tarltons today and decided Mission Bay for a late lunch might be a nice idea. The weather was not great, but it wasn't raining so I decided walking was fine.
I had gathered the information I needed previously, when I was in the area for a work thing, but had no time to grab the cache itself. Today was the perfect time to finally grab it. Heading to GZ the GPS had me right on track and I spotted something that looked right almost immediately. Looks like I was not the only one out caching in the area today, as the log had already been signed today. Thanks for the puzzle and the cache. #1004

A very pleasant day to be up here at the memorial - good views all round. There were a number of yachts out on the harbour enjoying themselves. TMGT find number 92. TFTC.

Out visiting Kelly Taltons so decided to get this cache before going there. Had great fun with it. Loved the cache container. Favourite from us. Thanks Team Welsh.
Away in the camper for a few days to do the Auckland TMGT's and anything else that's nearby. It is many many years since either of us came here, but nothing has changed. As teenagers it was a favourite place to visit, probably to watch the goings on on the harbour. Today we watched the new America's Cup boat out trialling. Amazing to watch it flying along in so little breeze. We have watched Anniversary Day Regatta's from up here, as well as participating in them occasionally. Mr S has a picture of one of his first girlfriends in front of the monument. This trip is brining back so many memories. Not very busy up here today though.
Thanks Team Welsh. Love the camo. Have a FAV for the trip down memory lane.

this was a last minute trip away to grab some geotour caches up in Northland, and the odd one here and there, weather was great back the day we headed home, thanks to all the COs for the placements and the enjoyment I had finding them.

A busy park that I will share with the public. Beautiful gardens and views.
Love the cache.

Our first stop as we arrive in Auckland for the day.
What a beautiful little spot away from the hustle and bustle of the centre.
Nice and quiet at GZ.
We left a pet rock - a turtle, and dropped off a TB.

What a fantastic spot. Great history. Learned a lot in a short time. Thank you Team Welsh, and the cache containers are just fabulous, as was the view by the memorial. FP from me
I am using the excuse of friends of mine getting married in Northland this weekend to finally get to do what I have wanted to do for over 30 years now, visit 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga.
And of course whilst doing that I'm also making the most of a rare opportunity to grab a whole bunch of caches that either help me with my Jasmer grid, my Hidden Dates grid, or else are part of the TMGT, or lastly because they are an Earthcache or a Virtual which I like doing.
Cape Reinga roadtrip day 2 - the drive from Auckland to Warkworth.
Driving around Auckland during the day is rarely something I enjoy doing, but on a gorgeous day like today I will put up with it for the fact that I get to visit places like this. I have been fortunate enough to Bastion Point before, and indeed one of my all-time favourite caches is very close to this one, but I hadn't before visited this memorial garden and Obelisk. Very well maintained and a pleasure to come here.
The information was easy enough to attain, and with a last look around I then headed off to my calculated GZ. There was a couple canoodling on the grass not far from where I wanted to be, but they seemed far more interested in themselves than anything I was up to so I was able to quietly search around. It only took a minute or two to see something of interest, and the cache was soon in hand. The cache and its contents are in good condition so I was able to deal to the usual caching administration quickly and then get back on my way again.
Thanks for the cache. FP given for the joy of this place and the work on the cache container.

What a fabulous idea to share the history of our great country with both visitors and locals. We are slowly chipping away at the series.

I set aside several hours while in Auckland today to attempt all the TMGT caches in the area. I was very happy be able to make a clean sweep, this was the fourth. No problems with the numbers and a quick find of another “signature” container. Signed log, recorded code, TFTC.
Everything was picture perfect on a sunny hot day. I really enjoyed our wander around this area and learning some of the history. The cache was well set up and a pleasure to do from start to finish. TFTC
Visiting Aukland for a few days before our cruise tomorrow. Road the HOHObus around and stopped at this lovely memorial park. Checked for caches and found this one that looked doable. Carole and I took a few minutes to locate and count the needed information. In no time we had this cute cache in hand. Saw some beautiful sights from this high point. Thanks for placing a cache that we could find today.
This is my first visit to NZ and this is my first NZ find! I wanted to make it a good one, and any ? Cache is a good one to me (Not to good at them). I always look though, because maybe there will be one that I can do. Thanks for setting one up that simple minded people can figure out! I so enjoyed my walk up from the beach and seeing the beautiful garden. And the container for the cache was quite a surprise to find. TFTC
Solved at home in Invercargill months ago. Was getting worried about how to get to coords then found the way. Seems to be a scooter dumping ground.

A plan was hatched to find Fort Bastion which is close by so an additional plan was put together to arrive 30mins early and pick this cache up.
Arrived with cragger, laval and draffin. Found all the information quite quickly even though there were a LOT of tourists around at the time. Short walk and the cache was soon in hand.
Thanks for the cache.

The plan was to meet a few other cachers this morning to grab the Fort Bastion cache but a couple of us went early to grab this cache first. The place was swarming with tourists but we quickly decoded the final and headed off to GZ which was, luckily, a much quieter area. The cache was found pretty quickly and I grabbed the two TBs to move on. I've also realised that I forgot to write down the code so I'll have to go back at some point to get it, doh! TFTC!
Went with Granny and Kakesnz after Fort Bastion. Really loved the cache container.
TFTC. enjoyed this cache. A nice view and interesting history here. Easy to work out and a fun hide, love the camo and thought and effort gone into this cache much appreciated.
