We hope you enjoyed exploring and discovering the local history in the communities of Aoetearoa New Zealand. The Tuia Matauranga GeoTour has now ended. Thank you to the community for all the great logs, photos, and Favorite Points over the last 30 months. It has been so fun!
It's a lovely day here and everyone sleeping soundly. I decided to go through the gap in the fence to find this one and good parking. I used to come to this exact area to watch the boxing day race. not sure where the entrance was but the gap of the fence sure helped thank you for the cache.
This cache was nicely tucked away at the back of the cemetery away from muggles view. It was interesting (and sad) looking at some of the old gravestones. Codeword noted. TFTC mar1sa.
Nice easy cache to find! Grabbed it with Cyclical caching on our geotour trip. Thanks!
Nice peaceful place here, minus the busy window factory next door….
Thanks for the cache!
Thanks for the cache!
Nicely nestled and what a beautifully maintained cemetery it is. Cache is all good. TFTC
We stopped close to the cache, and then tried to find the right approach, we decided to go the shortest, and we found a gap in the fence to enter. Maybe a backdoor for zombies to escape? Quick walk to the cache, which was an easy find by little cacher. We hopped back to the car as the third cacher wanted to see the sea, which was our next stop.
Wow. What a historical site! I guessed which tree it'd be and after a few minutes of looking around we found it!
It is nice and dry Took nothing left nothing.
Mum had to be the brave one and grab it as I'm not fond of spiders or creepy crawlies. We brushed some of the leaves of the nearby grave.

Pretty cool find, took a lil while to find but mine friend and I are just dumb lmao
Barked up the wrong tree for a bit but soon changed tactics and found the cache.

Missed seeing it on the first sweep but without any other decent options, a second look revealed the hiding spot.
Malinkaly and I planned a road trip to go to the MEGA but Covid has postponed the event again. We decided to continue on with our planned journey making adjustments as we go with the ever-changing travel restrictions.
Greetings from Dunedin!

Cache was quickly located after a sneakily impressive manoeuver around the nearby structure. Still not a fan of caches in cemeteries but anyway.
I didn't realize there were two parts to this cemetery. Of course I started in the wrong part...then to find some gates to get to the correct part. On my wander I noticed a huge headstone made from Coromandel granite. Thanks for the placement
Thanks mar1sa for the cache. It’s #1371 for us. We found your cache on 14 February 2021. Nice quick find in a lovely spot. Another added for the Geotour.
Picking up a few caches around Whanganui this morning before heading off to New Plymouth. TFTC
A few days away in New Plymouth gave us a chance to locate some more TMGT caches. Todays mission was a drive to collect some more. A nice interesting stop here. The first headstone we spotted was a matching family name of one 1/2 of the team and they knew about the history of that branch of family. Quick find. SL. TFTC.
That took a little bit of searching. When you are out of town, TMGT road tripping and have all but 2 (cave to go) you start thinking please dont be muggled Ive come all this way! .. Just got to keep looking TFTC - I have ties to Whanganui but not been here before.
Day 2 of a road trip with Saethwr around the lower North Island. Caching not a priority, but we will get a few.
Wanganui to New Plymouth.
Initially looked in the wrong place, so used geosense rather than technology and soon had the box.
Have a few extended family members resting here, and thus morning I showed by cousin how to use the cemetery search to find more details.
Thanks for the smilie mar1sa.

Having found where to park, we walked through, looking at some of the historic headstones.
A quick easy find in this extensive cemetery, but we managed to forget to collect the passport code. Maybe the cache owner will be kind and tell us. TFTC
Footnote: We found ourselves passing the cemetery a couple of days later, so popped in to collect the TMGT Code.

After cruising out to North Mole and back collecting caches on my bike I decided I had time for "just one more" before I had to hit the road for home. This was the lucky last in Whanganui for me today just because it was near where I had parked. It was certainly more serene here today than Boxing Day when I was one of the Cemetery Circuit spectators. The coordinates for this cache were spot on and the log was wonderfully dry. Since it was a quick find I gave myself time to wander some of the cemetery and soak up some local history. TFTC mar1sa
Last cache of the day before heading away for the night. My previous "find" here was the grave of my great great grandmother, which happens to be very close to the grave of my husband's great great grandmother. TFTC
Very nice find with woolwood9 on a little trip away!
SL **tm/ww NZ** (May be black smudge on wet or plastic logs)
*We really enjoyed the tour around from cache to cache!*
I climbed the (climb proof) fence as it was dark, woolwood9 just casually walked through the gap between fence and wall! Soon had the container located.

Parked the van, weather not looking promising, so I thought I would do the traditional cache first, and it started to spit, found the cache and sat in the van for awhile hoping the drizzle would ease up to I could do the Multi here, no, it wasn't easing up, so decided it will be park and grabs today tftc mar1sa
Pre Labour weekend trip away, seen as I'm working through Labour Weekend, I decided that from Wellington I would head towards Whanganui for the night, then home via New Plymouth to collect some TMGT and Jasmer caches.
I drove by and saw the gates were closed... I was hoping they wouldn't be locked. When I walked in, they weren't (I only thought they may be, because they seem to lock cemeteries in Hamilton) and was able to make a quick find in a nice and stealthy area away from anyone out for a morning walk.
TFTC mar1sa, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 3 find(s) of 15 today, making this find #2287

Thanks stayed in Whanganui a few years ago and have a couple of finds in this town. Back now with Kiscardi collecting the TMGT cache.
Spending two weeks driving around finding and signing logs.

On a tour around the North Island picking up the TMGT caches with NZ Bozzy , also we found many older caches and filled some gaps in our DT grids.
Today is also my 60th birthday so we celebrated with a lovely breakfast and then what else but some caching. Surprized to find this old cemetry close to the centre of town.

#8312. I came up to Whanganui yesterday to attend the Community Celebration event at CastleCliff. I decided a few weeks ago to make a weekend of it. Infoferret decided to join me on the weekender as her family were going mountain-biking in Rotorua. So we spent the day mainly picking up caches IF had not yet found. I have done very little caching in the River City so everything was new for me as well.
I was keen to pick up a few TMGT caches this trip. IF had already found this one but we parked nearby and wandered over to the GZ. It is always an easy find when you are with a previous finder who is keen to find lots more caches that day. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache as found. Thanks mar1sa for hiding it here. Code word collected.

Were close by getting Bug Bin and Mrs RRR noticed this non-smiley face on the map, so we decided it needed to be a smiley face instead. GPSr had us at the wrong tree for a short while, but a reset and recon in the neighbouring tree and Mr RRR had the goods quickly in his hand. SL. TFTC

I have a day to spend in Whanganui, and a lot of that time is set aside for geocaching. I targeted the four Tuia Matauranga GeoTour caches in the area as some I should get - they usually provide some interesting local history. This is the first of the day. An interesting location but unfortunately a bit of rubbish around GZ. TFTC.
A bit disconcerting this cache has an immediate neighbour who knows no boundaries.
thanks rattll for checking up on this one, all is where is should be and the cache is waiting to be found
Came here to replace the cache for the CO but thought I'd check for the old one first just to be sure it was missing with only one dnf, and managed to find the original although it was only just reachable.
It was about time I'd gotten around to doing this one anyway, so thanks for giving me the nudge to come here, and for setting it up.

Continuing our TMGT tour after lockdown. We intended doing this run around the west coast after visiting the South Island in March but coronavirus had other ideas. So once we reached Level 2 we packed the camper and took off for a few days. We couldn’t find this one in spite of messages and pictures to and from the CO. However she was kind enough to give us the word.
It was an interesting old cemetery with some definitely very old graves, particularly the many graves of the Sisters of Mercy. Never seen anything quite like that.
Many many thanks mar1sa. Have a FAV for taking us there.

We are on our homeward journey after a GeoTour around the South Island, and have just one more North Island region to complete - Taranaki/Whanganui/Manawatu.
We parked nearby and went for a short walk through the Whanganui Old Cemetery. An interesting history, and nice easy find, thanks.

An interesting place to come to, a nice walk to GZ on a sunny afternoon. The Mr quickly located, while I was wandering aimlessly. TFTC.
Someone got side tracked by sticks but it was soon found.
Thanks for the cache .

Wellington trip! Caching with Nosynel and Ethness. Happy to have found a NI TMGT. Not likely to get them all but fun trying. Thanks for all the interesting info, and the cache. We had to leave as there is a dead animal somewhere near by!

This time I found it before Jude-E, that's quite rare because she walks very fast.
The geocaching binge with Jude-E started on Wednesday night. We stayed a night at Wanganui. It was a great backpackers.
Lucky it was a weekend day so Ethness could join us. This was one of them.
Thanks mar1sa for placing this geocache it is find 8447 for me.

Leap Day has arrived and I needed to find a cache.
This one I almost got on the day it came out and after that it just has not been a priority.
A quick and easy locate unfortunately I'm not able to write with my right-hand at the moment due to recovering from a fractured wrist so I had to sign the log of my left hand. Result is a little bit scrawly with a backwards "S" at the start but it did the job.
Thanks for the cache and the leap day find.

Dislike grave yards they creep me out.. found the geocache after a couple of minutes.. signed log went to leave and dead tree brunches got my foot stuck i went for a fall :/ abit of bad luck. Interesting history though. TFTC.
We found a park nearby and had a nice quiet stroll to GZ. Was great to stand in the shade for a little bit. TFTC
Found today after our lunch and play at Kowhai park. We thought the gate we came through was creepy as it creaked all the way open then creaked shut again....weirdly it didn’t do it when we were leaving! Mum told us the ghosts we let out weren’t ready to come back in yet.....!!!!!
Called here this morning on the way to New Plymouth. Found the cache fairly quickly and then went for a wander around to explore the area. Signed log, recorded code, TFTC,

Nice long day caching around Wanganui! Lovely cemetery, and larger than I expected. Good to have another code! TFTC!!
It took a while to find the right entrance but got there in the end. Nice dry cache, bonus. Cheers, time to head north to New Plymouth.
We headed off to Wanganui today with the main aim of completing the four TMGT caches around there, as they are likely the only ones we will be able to try for.
It was a good day for travel - a sunny and cloudy mix and not too hot.
The first TMGT cache was Strachan's Cave and then we continued towards Wanganui, and up near Upokongaro to visit a friend, and collect a couple more caches. Next was back to Wanganui and a route up behind Virginia Lake and on to Westmere Lake and Bason Gardens.
Back in Wanganui we focused on the other TMGT caches.
We parked in a parking bay just around the bend in Heads Rd, crossed over and squeezed through the gap between two different fences, then it was just a very short walk to the cache. It was a quick and straightforward find in this very old cemetery - a peaceful place this afternoon. TFTC and the interesting historical account mar1sa.

Enjoying a roadie with my elderly mama. So nice to stop and have a wonder. Very pleased to have another code word on this series. fav point.

Kau he taiapa waea. Titiro tētahi atu taiapa, he tuhinga, tata ki te waka/ We wandered to the cemetary on the right, across the road to the left, forwards to the gate and back to the cache. Now we have to return by hither and thither? There's a gate there maybe? No it's a wire fence. Look there's another fence and there's a gap right by the car. Doh! Tftc
A nice quick find today. GPS playing up and we went to the wrong part but once it settled we were well on the hunt.
It's time to start the trek home. And now we head to Wellington to cactch the ferry. What a lovely day with views of both Taranaki and Ruapehu. TMGT series is complete enough for a coin after today. Just need to head to the far north, Dunedin and Napier (again) to finish the GeoTour.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

After navigating past the fencing I homed in on the cache. the Seagnoid had been here before me and we neaklly caught up in NP (both in Pukekura Park at the same time). All good here and some impressive old trees around. T F T C mar1sa
In Whanganui for a week over Christmas, visiting and staying with our daughter and her partner and letting the news that she's expecting her first child, which will make 12 grandchildren for us! We squeezed in a cheeky trip to New Plymouth during the week and I advanced my TMGT cache finds to over 30, as well as grabbing a few more 'new' Virtual caches as well as my 180th Earth cache. Grabbed a cache on xmas day morning too meaning my 5-days will be complete on Leap-day next year - yay! Thanks to all COs whose caches I found and individual logs wherever possible.

After Rattll's as always excellent Christmas barbecue, Taybeedragon and I teamed up with InfoFerret to visit some of the more special caches around town - TMGTs, virtuals, earths, etc. And so here we are, rummaging around in a cemetery!
Day two of Taybeedragon's and my big 3 week circumnavicaching trip around Mt Taranaki. Came across the ferry yesterday and today heading to Palmerston North. Not much time to go geocaching, but we managed to deviate via Petone to snag a couple of TMGTs today.
15 days, 536 geocaches. Whew!
Biggest memories of the trip:
Mt Taranaki had been removed for cleaning - most of the time it simply was not there!
Rather a high proportion of sloppy coordinates (grrr...)
Not being able to canoe out to the T5 caches
AMAZING Pukekura Park
AMAZING Pukekura Park light show!!
Running out of pathtags. Too many good caches out there!
Lots and lots and lots of cache maintenance!

***[======== NZ Mega 2020 ========](http://nzmega.com)***
Planning for the [NZ Mega 2020](http://nzmega.com) event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, 23 to 26 October 2020. It's going to be a massive celebration of geocaching:
* 20 years of geocaching worldwide.
* 20 years since New Zealand had the very first geocache hidden outside of USA.
* And it's 2020 - all the 20s!
Talk to your geo-friends and start planning to be part of [this event](http://coord.info/GC87777) - you won't want to miss it!
Dropped of Zara and Toby at the entrance to Wanganui and team up with Infoferret, to check out some of the great caches around Wanganui. So here we are at the Old Cemetery. A quick easy find here once we find a way in. This one is now tagged and its another TMGT to mark off my list. Cheers. And find an even better way back to the car.
Day 2. Palmerston to Wanganui today.
With the Etherlord Kids in tow we head north towards Wanganui and the awesome Rattls BBQ. Then TS and I head towards Wanganui. Catch up with Infoferret for an afternoon of caching.
The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby and I are spending Christmas exploring Taranaki via geocaching. Its been an amazing 3 week adventure. Rattls BBQ was a great event, meeting many other cachers. But also managed to fit in a few more events, especially New Years Day celebrating the start of 2020. Lots of caches - over 500. Lots of cache maintenance. Lots and lots of kilometers. And lots of amazing places visited along our journey. Mt Taranaki remained elusive for much of our travels and the caches on it at the top. Loved Pukekura Park Night Lights Show and the the Wooden Mechanical toy exhibition at NP Info centre.

Today I would be attending one of the local geocaching social highlights of the year, the Rattll Xmas BBQ. This would be my third one although the series has been going much longer than that.
With the recent launch of the TMGeoTour, and the fact that I had never actually been caching in Wanganui, I decided that I would leave home super early to target some specific caches and otherwise get some good caching in before attending the event. Having worked my way towards Wanganui the long way, I was now in the City itself, stopping to grab a few 'interesting' ones and some Puzzle caches I had made an effort to solve during the preceding week as I knew I would be passing them.
I know I'm not going to be able to complete the TMGT requirements within 1 year, not even close! But seeing as I was here, I wanted to make the effort to get those that I can so ended up looking for this one.
The posted co-ords took me straight to it, and it was a nice and quick find at GZ. The container and contents were perfectly dry, so I was able to sign and replace swiftly as found before setting on my way again. Thank you for placing this cache here.
