A lovely walk this morning in the company of feathertop and micaparamedic (Earthcache Master). It was the most beautiful vista at GZ looking in both directions. We collaborated on the answers and have e-mailed.Thanks for bringing us to this beautiful spot and highlighting the geology TiedyeSmileys.
What a fascinating spot to visit early today. In Mclookers and micaparamedic's company.Gary did the calculations as we admired the slot holes and gorge.A favourite point from me
Having been a geology major back in my university days, the concept of dip and strike is one that I understand quite well. This is my second visit here in the last few days, today with McLookers and feathertop. A pleasant stroll along the Canyon Walk taking in the sights, smells and sounds.Answers have been sent in. Thanks TiedyeSmileys for placing this Earthcache, enhancing the game board and adding to our enjoyment.
The river certainly looked tempting for a dip, but after being here for a week with some freezing temperatures, I wasn't about to be fooled.Amazing efforts were made so that some people could say "I have more of this shiny gold rock than you do"
Permission to log received from CO.We took this walk along the canyon a few years ago with our Golden Retriever. He was always up for a dip, no matter where, but today it was just the two of us.Perfect way to finish off a long day. Beautiful weather, scenery, plus we got to learn a thing or two. Thank you TiedyeSmileys for a very informative cache page, and bringing us to this great location.
Visited with catnap777 on 9 August 2024. We had so much fun on Buffalo last weekend, that cat' and I decided to do it all over again this weekend. We were glamping overnight in Porpunkah, so after settling into the caravan park, we had a bright idea to chase a cache or three in Bright. This cache page has the best explanation of Strike and Dip that we have seen anywhere. [^]In the past we have been very good at Strike&Dip Earthcaches, we strike them from our cache lists and dip out of them as quickly as we can , but with such a good tutorial, cat' and I thought we would give this one a go. A pleasant stroll along the bank to GZ, seeing some very impressive tail races, and some very nice scenery along the way also made it well worth while. Thankfully, a favourable reply today from our co-authored submission to the CO has reiterated the quality of the lesson. TFT(E)C TiedyeSmileys.
Site visited with dalerious whilst caching Mt Buffalo and staying in Porepunkah. We got down from the mountain Friday afternoon and headed to our accommodation to dry things out and ready ourselves for a full on assault on the mountain the next day.We were lucky to have our cabin upgraded, which meant we had a washing machine and dryer in said cabin. That saved heaps of time which meant we could pop into Bright and have us some more fun.We only had a handful of caches left for us in Bright because Dale had visited here a few times over the years, and up until three and a half years ago, I lived in Albury. We arrived and parked up on Frasers lane and took a lovely stroll to gz, where the calculations and deliberations began. We must commend the CO's for a thorough explanation of the scientific process and principles of Dip and Strike.I truly believe that we have never thus far been taught as thoroughly studying an Earthcache. It is for this reason I am dishing out a favourite point. Just because the CO's reside in Tasmania has nothing to do with it. You all know it is my favourite State now don't you.Thank you TiedyeSmileys, and thank you also for the quick reply.dalerious will add our photo.
This earth cache drew me like a magnet today. A mate dropped me off in town to browse and shop and the sheer morass of folk abound drew me towards the canyon as a more relaxed form of escape. Dodging the odd Easter celebree wasn't too difficult and I was soon learning about sluices and tailraces and such. Drip angles and inspecting nearby races garnered me a somewhat limited understanding of those historical undertakings and I shot off some answers to the best of my ability. This is a true rarity. Logging a cache, and an earth cache to boot, on the the day it was discovered. Thank you TiedyeSmileys for creating an earthcache here highlighting this cool canyon!
We approached this cache from the opposite side of the bank. A beautiful day and a beautiful spot Photo of geodog
Tag along and I had the chance to visit Bright for a few days and used the bikes provided to ride around the township. This was one of the caches we tackled. Answers have been forwarded for approval. We parked /walked the bikes here to check the canyon out. What a surprise it was too. we probably would not have been here without the cache to entice us.Thanks for the lesson and the fun TiedyeSmileys
Bright is one of our favorite spots in Victoria and we have done the Canyon walk at least 10 times in the past few years. We finally remembered to check whether there are any caches in this area and stumbled across this EarthCache Answers have been sent, and many thanks TiedyeSmileys for this cache.
Up in Bright for the week with the MX-5 Club. After a quick... and I mean quick... drive up Mount Buffalo this morning, this afternoon was "free time" which gave the opportunity to take a walk beside the Ovens River... and look for the information required for this Earth cache. Thanks **TiedyeSmileys** for this Earth cache.Answers have been sent.
This months ’Wheel of challenges’ requires a variety of cache finds. This was the closest Earth Cache to home so the geokids and I took the drive out today. A nice sunny walk and we were at GZ. I’ve enjoyed running the canyon loop in the past so it was nice to slow down and appreciate it some more today.

Winter holidays in Bright... The river, once a lifeline for the gold miners who flocked to this region in search of fortune, held secrets of a bygone era. As we followed the meandering river, the serene sounds of flowing water provided a soothing backdrop to our adventure. The tranquil atmosphere belied the turbulent history that had unfolded here. The Ovens River, once bustling with gold seekers, was now a place of quiet contemplation and natural beauty.
I struggle with identifying dips and strikes at earthcaches! Geology operates in three dimensions, and the dip and strike are measurements used to describe the orientation of geological structures within the Earth's crust. However, when we observe these structures at the surface, we are often limited to two-dimensional representations - or dodgy views across the canyon! I tried by best!
As we walked on, the landscape began to change, revealing mounds of earth and rocks that bore witness to the extraction of gold from the riverbed. These remnants of old diggings, known as tailings, stood as scars on the land—a testament to the extensive mining operations that had altered the natural course of the river. The traces of human activity were a reminder of the delicate balance between progress and environmental impact. Logging with permission, favourite point added! Thanks for the earthcache TiedyeSmileys.

The whole fam including geo dog Roxy came up for a quick getaway for the labour day long weekend. We stayed at our shack in Poepunkah. Today was such a nice day that we decided to venture out for a walk.
The earthcache location is beautiful. Roxy enjoyed taking a dip in the canyon. The rest of us stayed on the banks. We weren't sure of where we should actually be to gather the answers for this one as we couldn't find the spot that everyone else seems to be taking photos from. We came in from ground/river level looking up to the cliff.
I think we found a small narrow tail race in front of which Roxy posed for the photo.
We had a look around and discussion about angles and directions. Answers sent to the CO and permission to log obtained.
Thank you for the earthcache here TiedyeSmileys A fav point from us for the wonderful location and for teaching us about the canyon here.

We took the dog for a brisk walk this morning. Being a lab she wanted to do more swimming than walking!
We eventually got to GZ and had quite a long discussion about dips and strikes for the rest of our walk. Answers to the best of our knowledge sent to CO.

Spending a week exploring the Bright area with Bogonghazy. A lovely evening walk after dinner at the local hotel in Bright. Thanks for bringing us here. Bogonghazy has had sent the answers
LittleBoss2 and I had just been out to dinner in town, and being such a beautiful night in Bright, decided to try a few caches on the way back to our accom.
The walk along the river was amazing, and at GZ we were distracted by a trout gently taking insects off the surface of the river. If only I'd had a fly rod with me.
Answers sent on behalf of LB2 and I, hopefully correct. Thanks for your research here TiedyeSmileys, so pleased to learn something new.

A beautiful day to be out walking and a fine place to do it as well. The slot canyon cuttings for the mining where very interesting too. Lots of great views along the way and the river looked super inviting for a swim.
The rock formations were very clear and with the detailed explanation I was able to send through answers with no trouble.
This series of measurements was very similar to a ecache I did Castlemaine six months back. So was a little familiar with the concept.
Thanks for a great ecache

A couple of rest days in Bright after a big day in the mountains.
Went for a morning walk with the kids and grabbed this EC. Took a while to work out until was back home. A beautiful area and gets a FP from me.

It has been some years since we walked the Canyon Walk. There are many interesting features to observe and this Earthcache educated us about Dips and Strikes. We were here quite late in the afternoon and made our observations around 4 pm. #9383 TFTEARTHCACHE TiedyeSmileys
Without this Earthcache we wouldn’t have gone for this lovely walk and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the river. Did notice the cache a few days after it was posted and as we were coming to Bright on the 24th were hoping we would be the FTF, however will have to be content with second to find! Very interesting to look along the tail races! Thanks for the lesson and placing this Earthcache!
Such a favourite place to wander and with the river up the sounds are impressive. Really great lesson on strikes and dips which I find hard to get my head around - hope I have the right answers! Thanks for the new geo-earth lesson. A fave from me!
A trip from Canberra, ACT to Whittlesea, Vic with a few side quests for LGAs. TFTC.
A great walk along the river. A lot of water flowing at the moment.
