On our way to south we stopped also here in Morwell. A bit rainy day didn't matter at all.Interesting information of this place, thanks for this earthcache! Favopoint!
I recently found out that my company offers a "Wellness Day" program, which essentially gives each employee an extra annual leave day to specifically take a day off for a mental health break. Well I also found out that if I didn't take mine by the end of November, that I would forfeit it. So I desperately started planning when I could take my mental health day and with the snuggle muggle attending a conference until late tonight, today seemed to be the perfect day to do so.So with an entire free day and night I figured I should take full advantage of it and attempt to find some caches that were a bit further out of my normal caching radius. Well this year I have been actively attempting to fill in some missing months for my AUSMER and with an entire day free I figured [the Nomad's](https://www.geocaching.com/p/?guid=16d052bc-8e90-4546-b4fa-1006c6b1f8ef&wid=b2c69374-8806-4c87-b2d5-037ea9dae103&ds=2) [The Billy Goat's Gruff (GC47B)](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC47B) would be the perfect target for the day as it is the only active cache in Victoria that was hidden in March 2001, a month I still needed for my AUSMER.So after finding that cache I then slowly stated my journey back to Melbourne via the M1 and figured I would break up the drive back by finding any Virtuals or Earthcaches along the way that were only slight detours. So when I spotted that this Earthcache was only a short detour, I knew I had to stop and try and find it. I always love a good Earthcache as they usually take me to beautiful locations and teach me interesting facts, this Earthcache included. Not only did I get to learn some interesting facts about this beautiful world we live in, but the area also had some interesting facts about mining and the equipment that was historically used. So a big thanks goes to [grannyapple64](https://www.geocaching.com/p/?guid=1fadda17-8aba-436f-9109-0d9733e10dd2&wid=f48bcc58-7734-496f-9e8c-717a6fcc6888&ds=2) for bringing me here to such an interesting location. TFTC.
Had a look around this area with goingplaces2 as we have not been here before. TFTC.
Had a mixture of cache types on the target list today while out caching with iloook4geo. This was the only earthcache for the day and joint answers have been sent to the CO. Thanks go to grannyapple64 for bringing us here.
We used to come this way a lot pre-pandemic.. its a changed landscape with the Hazelwood plant gone, the pit closed and filling with water.. Since the SEC is "back" .. We wonder if Powerworks will ever reopen.. we guess not.At GZ we were a little puzzled until we read the cache description properly.. We can remember when you could actually see the pit from the lookout.. the bushes need a trim these days! Thanks grannyapple64.
My first cache today. Earth caches are one of the types I am targeting. Easy parking. Quite the collection of things here, and information. Answers sent. TFTC grannyapple64.
We decided to go out today and do an Earthcache, given that it is Earthcache Weekend. I am here with D@geo and Gwd.aussie.Gwd.aussie is sending the answers. Thanks grannyapple64
With a souvenir on offer for Earthcache Day plans were made with gwd.aussie and Sharon14 to head out caching. I have been here for another cache today returning for the Earthcache. We gathered the answers to the questions with gwd.aussie forwarding these to the CO for the group. Thanks grannyapple64
Earth cache day, and a souvenir on offer, a caching we are going.I never really sure of my/our answers for earth caches. Not knowing if we read the questions the way wanted.Otherwise a good day was had, cache, food, and some shopping.Out caching with Sharon14, and [email protected] you for the cache grannyapple64.
What a beautiful area to visit, no matter what time of year.Site visited with dalerious, and answers sent off to CO.We were a tad concerned when we first drove to this site but soon realised that the area is no longer used commercially. It was very interesting walking around seeing what was left of a place that in the past, would have been a hive of activity. Thank you grannyapple64 for providing this interesting Earthcache. dalerious and I thought we should pack the car and head to Gippsland, as it is an area we have been wanting to visit for a very long time. The weather report was less than favourable, but when has that ever stopped us.We just take it as it comes, as life is too short to sit at home procrastinating. My husband dalerious and I met each other late in our lives, not that we feel like oldies yet, so we are not going to sit back and watch everyone else do the awesome stuff. We live life to the full, and that is the way we are going to stay till we fall off the perch. Well, that's the plan, anyway. Two days away ticking off the rest of the LGA's in this part of Victoria.
Visited 20 July 2024 @3:50pmWith 3 days off, catnap777 and I headed for the Bass Coast with a wish list of caches we have wanted for way too long. We didnt let the lousy forecast hold us back, we just added another jumper under our wet weather gear. [^]As it turned out, most of the wet stuff fell while we were driving or at night while we were all tucked up warm and dry. God loves Geocachers. Among our most prized prizes pried from their hides were some of the last county caches we needed in Victoria, some high D/T stuff, and a handfull of challenge caches that have been on our radar since day dot. Of course, we could not miss the chance to bag an earthcache or two along the way. ...and now, with answers approved, we can log Overburden unburdened. TFT(E)C grannyapple64.
Today was a good day to visit this location and look over the old mine pit, the dam and the overburden. Weve been here before for another cache. Its good to see an Earthcache. It wasnt too cloudy or smoky to actually see it all.
A quick visit to the area for Freddo1s event. I had always driven past to today was the day to stop by as I was early for once! Thanks for the overburden lesson grannyapple64 Regardskbucky
A nice lookout of the overburden. On our way home from the Canberra Mega after a week of camping and caching
Visiting friends in Morwell, with some friends from SA, we decided to go grab a couple geocaches for my bday. I was keen to do the EC that was placed here. I had been to this location on previous caching adventures whilst in town, but was happy to revisit. After reading through the questions and gathering the answers, I shot them off to the CO who promptly gave the thumbs up for logging. Thanks for bringing me back to this location grannyapple64
Visited it during 28-days geotrip to Australia, N.Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Am.Samoa, Fr.Polynesia with Marci, Ch. Sometimes we logged as "MT" or "Jonea" or "MTCh". Thanks for showing nice caches and places. MT-Jonea from Brno city in Czechia EU. FP
Staying at Blores Hill campground for two nights, we spent the day travelling across to Traralgon and Morwell, sightseeing and finding a few caches along the way. Thanks for the earthcache grannyapple64!
A great find today whilst on or Morwell cache outing. Our second earth cache, both very different from each other. ( See Kiama Little Blowhole EC) All was well, and another great day out caching. Answers will be sent in the very near future. TFTC GrannyApple64#143
Wife needed to go to midvalley to get something so I dropped her off and came up here to grab the multi & earth cache. Sent answers to Co and got a quick reply saying all answer where correct. Thanks for the cache
We met up with Rebel Acts in Morwell briefly so took the opportunity to head out to this Earthcache the closest cache to our home that we have not found. The area up here is sadly quite derelict these days. Mrs SKI's father worked in the offices up here at one stage while surveying for the SEC in days long gone. Our children enjoyed exploring the displays but sadly most have gone so our grandchildren were somewhat disappointed and wondered why we had bothered to come up here. Still there were some good trees to climb.GZ does give a good vantage point however for viewing the rehabilittion work being undertaken in the mine. Not sure there has been formal approval to flood the mine, but there is certainly plenty of water in there.Thank you for your efforts in creating and maintaining the cache grannyapple64.**SKI Pair****
A nice bit of education here, it's amazing how much things have changed here in the short time I have been living in Gippsland. Thanks grannyapple64 for the cache.
Found by The Empire + HThe sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the asphalt as we embarked on another road trip, this time setting our compass towards the coastal gem of Merimbula, NSW. Summer was the perfect companion for our journey, promising sun-kissed landscapes and a wealth of new discoveries along the way.Our first pitstop on this adventure was Lakes Entrance, a tranquil coastal town nestled at the entrance of the Gippsland Lakes. As the wheels of our road trip adventure continued to roll, our journey led us to an unexpected yet fascinating detour the Hazelwood open cut mine in Victoria. Nestled amidst the Gippsland region, this massive coal mine was not just a geographical landmark but a testament to the intricate relationship between industry and the Australian landscape. Our geocaching adventures didn't take a backseat even in this industrial landscape. We discovered a cache strategically placed to offer a unique perspective of the mine, allowing us to appreciate the convergence of human activity and the geological story told by the exposed layers. Thanks for the earthcache grannyapple64, answers sent.-MEarthcache #418
Answers sent to CO. This was an interesting earth cache and as usual, I learnt something I never knew about. We went to Loy Yang lookout and was amazed at the size of the power plant and the mine area
FTF @ 11.30 Was raining and couldn't mow the grass today but when this new earthcache was released that changed everything so I jumped into action arrived at GZ with lots of cars here but luckily nobody's doing what I'm doing so info collected and then sent to CO and quickly got the okay to log. Thanks again grannyapple64 for your earthcache
