I have been unable to attend the previous events on Herring Island so was thrilled when I saw this event pop up. Luckily the NGV were holding a pop-up sculpture park initiative and built a floating pontoon bridge. I thought by walking across the floating bridge (as opposed to kayaking) Id stay dry but alas it rained. No mind, we are an intrepid bunch and the timing was perfect. I was able to grab all of the caches on the island before this catch up.Thanks ConnieandRick for hosting for our geo-enjoyment. Cache on ??
This was my first visit to the island that hadn't required a kayak. A much easier, and quicker, trip across. I cam across with and_me where we also caught up with ZQX. After wandering around it was time for the main event. It's always great to catch up with cachers old and new. TFTE
Sorry about this late log but I am still logging some from last year and you just can't rush these things. This was a great event that was well attended. This was my first time on this island so thank you for bringing to my attention, that we could cross in a much easier fashion. Great event, thanks for organising.
TFTC - thank you so much to the organisers, it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon ??
N will pop over with LVsnooks for our first visit to Herring Island. See you soon @2@
I have been told that this event would be one that I would enjoy and that I would be happy to attend it. Be prepared for the arrival of myself and Grub62, also attending is Smrff78.
I might just make it. If the #58 tram lines up with the train to South Yarra, I might even get there early. #geocachingonpublictransportftw
Thanks for hosting! It's great to see so many people over here and catching up with everyone!
A great event, it almost went to mega status. Really well attended and good to meet up with everyone. TFTC.
Our second visit to Herring Island, the first by boat, the second today by a temporary pontoon bridge put up by NGV for a special event. How different the visit to the island was today! Every time you turned a corner, you bumped into another geocacher!Funny thing today, was the person on the mainland side of the bridge telling everyone to cross the bridge and turn right, only for most people to cross the bridge and turn left to find a cache! There was a huge turnout for this event, and it was timed beautifully just before the rain came. Well done ConnieandRick for knowing the bridge was going to be here and for bringing everyone together at this special place. We do love Herring Island. Next time, we will come by kayak and experience having the island to ourselves ??
Thank you for organising and bringing us all together in such a beautiful spot!! ??
What a great event! And what a great island! Im not a city person but couldnt say no to this event. Thanks ConnieandRick for inviting this great group of people to share this day
Thanks for organising the Event when there was an impressive floating bridge in place. We came and collected the caches yesterday and today was for socialising. Great to see and meet so many familiar faces and exchange a pathtag or two. A few trackables visited with us. The rain arrived, so we took our leave! #11,181 TFTEVENT ConnieandRick - our first time visiting Herring Island, but we are sure it wont be the last.
What a great idea hosting an event here today. Grabbed a few great D/Ts on the island and great to catch up with everyone.
Ducking between showers, we crossed the wobbly bridge to join the throng. There were HEAPS of geocachers on the trails. Geodaughter was on crutches, so she had a good sit and chin-wag while geoson and I went for the local caches. Thanks for organising this. Great idea!
My buddies: Me, Myself and I Thank you ConnieandRick, for creating, placing and maintaining this cache. I have enjoyed finding it and visiting this spot.Follow my story on Instagram @AlphaDeltaIndigo
Thanks for a great event, much easier than paddling across like we did the first time. Thanks ConnieandRick for the cache, the adventure, the hunt and the fun.
Third time to the island this year. Once by punt, once by kayak, and today by pontoon bridge. I arrived early, but then so had many others that I encountered on a walk around the island.Great to see just how many people made it to the event, and nice to catch up with some of them. Thanks to ConnieandRick for organising the event.
This looked like an event worth rugging up for and heading out on a cold Sunday to attend. LVsnooks and I ventured out for a mini caching adventure on Herring Island to grab a few caches and meet up with caching friends. We had a great time. Thank you ConnieandRick for organising.TFTC
What an opportunity! To be able to access this wonderful island by temporary footbridge for a change. Thanks Connie&Rick for bringing this opportunity to us by holding an event here today! It was a bit scary crossing the bridge, but I coped with very considerate people crossing at the same time as I was and not making it too shaky. Also for holding the worst of the rain up until after wed got back to our car.! Thanks for this event!
After a yummy Sunday Roast at a friend's house, I was in 2 minds about attending. The car's sat nav said I was 15 minutes away. Even I'm not that lazy. I'm really glad I went. This island has been on my radar since I moved to Melbourne, over 10 years ago, yet I'd never got to it. I got the email notification of the virtual a while ago too, conveniently after the ferry had stopped. The temporary bridge was not my cup of tea but I powered on up the middle and exhaled once back on Terra firma. Cool spot! Spotted the crowd at the shelter and had a few catch ups while waiting for official start time. Then did the circuit to complete the caches on the island. Thanks so much for hosting and to n0w0rries for giving you the idea.
So grateful to visit Herring Island second time. First time during CITO by Kayak, second time by walking across on floating bridge.Great turn out here. Thanks for hosting this event.??
Met up with chooknchunk and sunset62 for one of our PTV shake down walks, eventually heading to Herring Island for this event. Great to see so many in attendance. That many that I didn't have a lot of time to chat with everybody. Thanks ConnieandRick for placing this event cache, enhancing the game board and adding to our enjoyment.
What a fantastic opportunity to visit Herring Island. Wonderful location to walk around, explore and get caches of course. Great attendance providing opportunity to catch up with many cachers. Thanks for organising ConnieandRick.
Attended with n0w0rries and had a very enjoyable walk around the island. It was nice having a guided tour. Met a few cachers along the way, then even more when the event started. Thanks for organising this event when it was easier to visit ConnieandRick, I had a great time and didn't get too wet when the rain started. TFTE
It was so nice to be able to walk across to this very natural bushy island, to catch up with a few like minded geocachers. I was also able to do the virtual cache here, which was nice to tick off. Many thanks to ConnieandRick for hosting this event.
So nice to walk on water for a change! Even caught up with an ex-work colleague who was visiting the island. Bonus all round. Great to see all the usual happy smiley faces.
LeeLee was hoping to attend but wasn't sure how things would pan out. Moons aligned and the water crossing was conquered. What a fabulous spot for an event. Thanks ConnieandRick for creating for us all to enjoy. So many people in attendance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wow! Was pretty happy to see an event on Herring Island we could walk to. Attending gave us the opportunity to search for all the caches on the island. Thanks ConnieandRick for organising. We even managed to get to the tram before the rain started.
I have explored this island before, by canoe and punt but never by bridge! Great idea and turnout. Thanks to ConnieandRick for the fun and the adventure.
Spring Victorian Incursion 2024.Day Ten: The inner south east.Weather: a rainy end to the day.One of five caches (includes an event) found on Herring Island today thanks to the NGV fronting up the cost of a temporary floating bridge to the island. Talk about perfect timing for my this extended visit to Melbourne. A lot of gratitude to ConnieandRick for organising this event and alerting me, an out-of-towner, to the fact that Herring Island was just a short walk from Como Landing today. I wouldnt have known about this otherwise. The guy at the Como Landing point told me that the bridge was erected yesterday, and they start dismantling it at 5pm tonight. Apart from logging those four normally difficult caches, it was great to get to chat to some friendly Victorian cachers. Thanks again ConnieandRick.
15:51Well, this is a bit different, eh.I know the Yarra has a reputation for being an upside down river, but this is ridiculous after so many jokes about just needing snow shoes to cross some days. This afternoon, the hardest part of getting onto the island was negotiating the horrendous traffic of a Sunday afternoon in the northern suburbs. Ugh. I'm usually out way ahead of it, or on the train, and had almost forgotten what it's like. But the road was nice and clear when I parked nearby, and I took a leisurely stroll to see what we were up for. The drunkard's walk across the river was highly entertaining. I can't imagine what it would be like in a crowd.Of course Herring Island was... not teeming with Geocachers, but there were familiar faces around every corner, even an hour before the event. And they kept coming.Well spotted, ConnieandRick. I'm glad so many people who haven't had the opportunity to visit Herring Island finally managed to get here. Can't say I'm complaining about not having to pack the kayak this trip, either. Now to weave my way back across to Como Landing...#9213
What a way to celebrate my 4300th find - an event on an island that I could walk on the Yarra to attend. Thank you ConnieandRick for organising this wonderful event that so many willingly attended. The weather was kind to us for the event which was wonderful. It was great to catch up with so many people from all over Victoria as well as interstate.
With the lure of this event on Herring Island that didn't require us to cart a kayak into the city, Chook joined forces with Sunset62 and micaparamedic, catching the train in and enjoying a leisurely walk there via a handful of caches. We arrived on the Island nice and early so we could enjoy its sights and caches without rush. We also enjoyed meeting up with likeminded geocaching tragics doing the same thing.Lots of people at the event, which shows how much the opportunity to get onto the Island via floating pontoon rather than watercraft was appreciated. We left close to the end time as we had a fair way to walk back and rain was threatening (although only light showers eventuated). Thank you so much ConnieandRick for hosting this event, which gave us this great opportunity and brought us down to Melbourne on another public transport jaunt.
After using a novel way to reach the island (much easier than entering and exiting a kayak) the rain held off long enough for a very well-attended event. Thanks for organising and hosting this event, ConnieandRick ??
Today I planned to walkover to Herring Island for an event (not an easy task walking on water you might say) and I mentioned it to my caching buddy GemmaSistema. So a planned was hatched to catch up and do some caching before hand.I picked her up at a station and soon the day of fun and laughs started.Caches were mainly picked by if there was parking close by and also how much walking was involved. After touring the finer suburbs of Melbourne we have made it where we wanted to be and that is on an island.I mentioned that I was walking to Herring Island to my son during the week and he laughed at me.Photo was sent and the apology came.I have walked a couple of these wobbly bridges before. This is what we were all here for and a big thank you to ConnieandRick for finding out about the bridge and letting us all know and holding the event.A place that has been on my to do list and I just hadnt made it here.Walking on water was the fun part of the day. Thanks ConnieandRick TFTEC.
Great location for an event with some other good d/t nearby. Good to see so many people attending my first event on this continent. A big thanks to the co for hosting the event and also for giving me a lift to it and a drive around some of what Melbourne has to see for a tourist. Hope to see you when I'm back in the UK.
16:12It was our second visit to this intriguing island today, the history and art work of which never ceases to amaze us. We completed our visit today, gathering with many fellow cachers to catch up at a most enjoyable event. Our appreciation and thanks to %ConnieandRick for organising a special event.37417
What a fantastic turnout on Herring Island today.I teamed up with SciFiRulz and we managed to get a prime parking spot directly opposite Como Landing.I have travelled out here by punt to each of the landings on this island and also by canoe a couple of times.Today, the walk over the Yarra River on the floating bridge was a whole new experience, a tad disconcerting but enjoyable all the same.I wandered the Island with SciFiRulz as she went about finding all of the caches. This was the perfect opportunity for me to check my caches once again.A huge turnout at the event, with cachers from many states and a few from overseas too.It was great to chat with friends, old and new.Thank you to ConnieandRick for the excellent event.
I had a suspicion that this would be popular when I decided to organise the event, but had no idea that so many would be here. A great turnout, even 30 minutes before the official start. I counted over 50 as I handed the log book around. I overheard that some had found the floating bridge a bit challenging. I think I must have got so used to them, as every year there's a huge one spanning Albert Park Lake for the Grand Prix, with hundreds using it all at once. Anyway I'm glad everyone made it and no one ended up in the river.
How convenient it was for the NGV to organise a temporary bridge on to the island to make getting there a whole lot easier... and how convenient it was that **ConnieandRick** took advantage of the NGV's offering and organised this Event on the island. Before I wandered over the bouncing bridge I had a chat with one of the NGV people. They were saying they were quite pleased with the number of people that had visited over the weekend... over 500 they said. Personally, I didn't think that was all that many... and I wonder how impressed they would be to know that 10% of the visitors didn't come for the art!Great gathering **ConnieandRick**... a brilliant opportunistic event... thanks for organising it.
*8 Sep 2024, Attended from 3:21PM, Find # 15778.*I have been to Herring Island a number of times now, actually this is the 4th time this year but I must say it is the first time that I have walked across the river to the Island. There was certainly a lot of people that took advantage of the floating bridge but I certainly dont mind the paddle across which is what I have done the majority of the times I have crossed to the Island.**Thanks to ConnieandRick for hosting this Eventcache.**
Wasn't sure what to expect from an invite to C-Boy Island - (Cache Boy Island ) but wow was it fun !! Jonny has never been over to the island before so thanks for arranging this excellent catch up Connieandrick - the pontoon bridge made it easy all access to a really interesting location. Great to catch up and chat with all that made it.
I had the afternoon free so had planned to visit the island with the growing crowd. I had kayaked across earlier in the year so it was just a great chance for a social gathering.Lots of people gathered and there was plenty of discussion. A great place for an event. Funnily enough with the weather I seemed to get a little wetter this time than I did when I kayaked.A big thanks goes to ConnieandRick for taking the time to add Catchup on Herring Island to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.-Wow! A great turnout. Good to see some friends and make some new acquaintances. The nine sculptures are very interesting. Thanks for the event.
One of the many hordes that stumbled over to the island today. I teamed up with Posums as we ventured around. Cool place. Great to catch up with folk. Thanks for the fun and adventure.
A couple of caching teams from the NE of the State are planning to attend - Harrowang and beavar. Sounds like an opportunity not to be missed! There will be 3, 4 or 5 of us, depending on work commitments.
Looking forward to my first visit to Herring Island. Thanks for hosting @1@. Attending with JonnyGoldcoast.
What an opportunity! To walk all the way to Herring Island. Finally I can get to those caches! We plan to be there!
At this stage I am not working - so depending on how we are feeling bunadoorian and I will try to get there.
I have changed my plans for the weekend and this has opened up a window of opportunity to attend this event... see you there all being well...
I think PamJ and I will be able to attend. Just waiting to get the details of a family event which may affect us.
Another visit to Herring Island? Why not. At this stage Im sure I should be able to make it. @1@
The stars seem to be aligning for Chook to travel down by train from Western Vic and actually get to Herring Island for the first time. Excited for this event.
