Our caching the Bunyas with mates...This one was a little tricky to reach! Carefully brushed past the spikey fellas before conducting a too-wide-of-a-search at the coords. Whoops! Cache was eventually found, all in good order. We very much enjoyed reading some of the old logs, and were especially intrigued by the journal-style entries from a few decades ago!TFTC - dropped a reed geocoin travel bug for the next cacher to move on

This weekend we are at the Bunyas for a big family gathering. I decided to grab as many of these old caches as possible. Have found 8 in total and walked close to 25km Today was out caching with Pinngo. At the lookout we followed a geo trail that seemingly went around the mountain. However it didnt seem to head up hill. So we followed it some distance but then cut back up the hill. Cache was a quick find in good order. Thankyou for placing and maintaining this cache very enjoyable walk to GZ.

Out with a bunch of Scout Leaders led by Ninja Kelpie. Wandered up to find this one. We we side tracked by a well worn track that soon took us off the side of the knoll and thick scrub bash followed. We should have stuck to the high ground. Took a bit of searching at GZ, but there it was. All in good order. TFTC

Found it again. Black boy is now more hip height! Lucky it is a big box

30-Jun-24
We are up here with the fam for a few nights. We walked to the lookout and so I tried walking out to this cache. Followed a goats track and got to within 50 meters and it said I had to go straight up. Couldnt see any sort of track so abandoned the search. Got covered in cobblers pegs and stung but some sort of stinging plant for my troubles. Never mind. Theres always next time.

Visited this cache earlier today with the big bunya box. All is goid. I noticed some possible cachers in the park... so close it seems...

Darn it to well hidden

Scratched around the bush like turkeys for half an hour. And could find it? Long pants are needed.Might need to check and see if it is still there? ...... otherwise it was fun.5

Great little spot off the beaten track! Once you found the trail wasnt too hard to find!

02-Aug-23
Apologies for the late log here (08.01.24) but I've had a busy time since getting back to the UK.An ex's birthday, I think, and a morning walk began with wallabies, boot-scrubbing, and some great views along the way. Leaving the track felt a little risky (hello Australia!) but it all went well and a fair hunt at GZ revealed the goodies. Lovely. I came back to the viewpoint feeling pretty happy with myself and turned the walk into a loop - which was good, because I really loved the Fig you go through. TNLN-TFTC!SP (UK) on an epic trek right around the world.

25-Jun-23
Yay! A bit of a hike through the long grass from poi.

Tftc! Note to future cachers: wear some long pants made of a solid material or you might end up with some scratches

Just too many Black Boys around here….Great walk though!

14-Oct-22
Loved the walk here! I really appreciate these older caches being maintained the way they are. There's something about going just this little but farther off the main track that gives you a sense for what the earlier CO's might have wanted cachers to experience. There's a certain idiosyncrasy to the cache descriptions and hints too, and the elaboration of the hand written log notes which you don't find everywhere are a bonus.

Tftc all in good order

Travelling with RoddyC imbunda and GS1947 after our stay in ⁰ Cunnamulla⁰ for the 2021 QOGM and some⁹ preparation for 2022 QOGM in Charleville. Targeting caches around Bunya and surrounds.

One of our target caches for the weekend. Boy what an adventure. We took the " scenic route" and picked up the two in the area. We dodged a few prickles. The "black boys" were beauties but I was surprised there were so many mature species but very few smaller ones.

Now how fast do they grow? If that was the original host then I would say from my knee to my hip in 20 years.

Met up with RoddyC, Hatsoff and GrannySmith1947 who were on their way home from QOGM21, I had been to QOGM21 but came home earlier and now spending a couple of days in the Bell and Bunya region. This was a long hard walk for me, only manages to fall over once along the way. Met a lot of people along the way and the last part where we had to follow Brown's cows was hard and the cows have changed their present trail but eventually we had the cache in hand. Log signed by all and replaced as found. Should have taken our water bottles so drink from the spring water fall. TFTC

On our way home from Charleville spending a couple of days in the Bunya area before finally arriving home after almost the weeks away.

What a walk to this one! And another yet to go! So many Xanthoreae - I have them as my GC Profile picture (not these though).

Another visit to the beautiful bunya mountains for Mother’s Day. Had time for a short walk before lunch so went to the lookout and then plunged into the overgrowth in search of this cache. At times there was a path/foot pad but mostly not. Made it to GZ and went in a circle trying to narrow it down before spotting the cache. Great to see some original logs and very thankful that this cache is still going. Thanks albyalbatross&wendy

I left Brisbane at 4:30am and had the log book in my hands by 8am. I did this one first as a friend told me that it could be a tricky find. But I walked until the GPSr told me I was there, then looked down and there it was. It's a beautiful spot out here with the grass trees and I enjoyed the walk. Thanks for the cache

15-Apr-21
Possibly the hardest fought for of our 7 Bunya finds. Hilarious bush-bashing along a non existent trail and so many possible hiding spots. So happy to have cache in hand. TFTC

Have long wanted to come here for the Buyna pines and the old caches.
Finally a gap week that gave me the opportunity to come here.
It was very windy overnight as we set out on our walk the sun had just broken through the clouds.
An enjoyable walk here, love the huge pines.
Was concerned that I might have to search for a while at GZ but the cache is a nice ammotin!

Another oldie done today.

Thankyou for hiding this geocache

Arrived at the gz and the geoson soon spied it, with a little help from me.

Great spot for a great hide. Dropped off a TB.

Saturday. OBC and Mrs SP were on a mission this weekend to find some of Qld oldest 100 caches. This cache was on our hitlist. I had a fair idea of what we would be finding, given the name of this cache. I wasn’t disappointed! So many of these wonderful plants in this area. I shudder to think how much these plants would be worth if they were for sale in the nursery. Alby was telling us that a week previous and these plants didn’t have the amazing flowers that we saw on them today. What a difference a week makes! I was just in awe of these plants and this whole area. To the cache - hmmmm, well OBC and myself must have kicked every one of these Xanthoreae plants. Turns out one of the ones I had kicked was the one we needed. We just needed to come from the right direction and see the coloured tether to make the find. We must have walked around in circles for several minutes. Alby even offered us his GPS, but we were adamant that we were going to find this one on our own! So while he was have a good laugh at our expense Razz, we trundled the area and this cache was spotted by the two of us almost at the same time! Another original log and I think OBC was almost beside herself. I was just happy to have our name added into the log. We headed back up to the lookout site where OBC had made a young friend earlier just after we took in the view at the Pine Gorge Lookout and after the young family left the seated area. A lovely area and awarding a FP for the area, the cache and oh - the time it took to finally find this one! Razz

This was the 5th of 9 caches found on this outing.

Thanks ***Albyalbatross&Nicole*** for showing us this place Razz

What an amazing day! I had no real plans for how it would go - other than to pack my hiking bag, head to the Bunyas with Slow Puncture to meet up with Albyalbatross and grab some of Queensland's oldest geocaches. To find these caches with the CO was a real buzz. We walked and talked and explored the beautiful Bunya mountains while discussing some of the earlier days of geocaching and how this amazing hobby has evolved.

I took photos of the wind farms, Tarong, some GIANT hoop pines, original logbooks, and unfortunately, some dry dusty soil. The drought has really made an impact at the Bunya mountains, and it was rather sad to see brown rather than lush green, and bare rocks rather than waterfalls. But we made the most of it, spotting King and Crimson parrots, listening to whip birds, and chasing after bush turkeys for a cheap dinner (OK, that last part was a lie!). Exploring hidden caves and little-known vantage points and waterfalls.

Somewhere along the way we turned left when we should have turned right, and we managed to do 26.3 kms from sun up to sun down. I was tired - a happy kind of tired the dictionary describes as LANGUOR. What a great day. I kinda faded towards the end - so very tired, a combination of sun exposure, dehydration and few kilometers on my feet, but it was worth it.

Oh my goodness! What a pleasant surprise and how nice to meet you in the middle of the bush Mr Albyalbatross. Today must be our lucky day. Now that we had the CO with us this was a definite find. Actually, thanks for letting us find it without your assistance. It’s such a good feeling to find it after our DNF last visit (May 2018).

Love an ammo tin - especially when they’re well maintained and freshly painted like this one. And we’re first to sign the new logbook. woohoo!

And what a wonderful location this is amongst the grass trees... so many in flower at the moment. And the view at the lookout is fabulous.

Thanks heaps Albyalbatross&Nicole for placing and maintaining these caches for our enjoyment. They sure add more fun to our day.

While wondering out from a cache service I came across what looked like two cachers following their phones.. It was a pleasure to meet the 2Wagtails and watch them make their find.

This cache has a temporary log book. The old one is being laminated and returned soon.

04-Sep-20
We made it through the cobblers pegs along the pig track as we didn’t read the hint. Much to the chagrin of master 7. Stay left at the intersection of paths as going right will end up slightly more treacherous. Thanks for taking us on a wonderful trip through the Xanthorrhea’s which i PlantSnapped and added to my collection

20-Aug-20
I was back in the Bunya Mountains for some more beautiful walks. We all walked to the lookout and then the girls left me to go back to the cafe while I waited for a couple of muggles to leave before I headed off the track. I was just about to make a run for it when about 10 more arrived to take selfies! The strong westerlies had blown up a lot of dust and the view wasn’t very good but still more muggles arrived and I was then waiting for about 20 people to stop chatting and gawking and selfie-ing!! At last the coast was clear and I dashed across the “bald” and into the xanthoreas. I decided to take the righthand “pig” track but it would have been better to have gone straight up the ridge. Eventually I made it to GZ and, after a bit of poking, found the tin prize. Thanks Albyalbatross&Nicole for a fine old cache and the beautiful grass trees are worth the effort to see.

T-Tech and I are road-tripping from Brisbane to Bunya Mountains for the weekend.

Today we must head back to Brisbane, but we decided to take the time to walk out to this cache. I was particularly keen to grab it as it is sooooo old! We walked from the end of Bunya Ave along Scenic Circuit to Pine Gorge Lookout, then watched another couple heading up the hill, so figured they might be geocachers. We got to about 180 metres from GZ, to find them searching, and showed that we had a bit further to go. They followed us up through all the amazing Xanthoreas and at GZ we all set to the search. One of them made the find, and we all signed the logbook. TFTC, albyalbatross&wendy.

A day had been planned to do some of the hikes around Bunya Mountains and to grab some of the older caches whilst we were at it.

We made it to the lookout without any problems and then headed off towards GZ. When at GZ, there were many possibilities where a cache could be hidden and after searching many of these possibilities the cache was in hand.

The log was signed and returned to the cache and the cache replaced exactly as found.

All is good with this cache. I just love finding the older caches.

Find #1648

TFTC ***Albyalbatross&Nicole***

I have given this cache a favourite point.

17-Jul-18
First find for the day on my end-to-end long walk. The shortest track in is closed at the moment so had to do the longer detour. Nice and quiet at the lookout so I was able to head further and wander quietly up the hill. At GZ I looked around for a short while before making the find. All good here - TFTC.

We spent ages looking for this one - couldn't find it Sad
Enjoyed the walk out to the lookout though. Smile

30-Mar-18
Thank you for this cache. Certainly earned it! If you are coming for the cache be aware that you have to walk several hundred metres from the end of the trail. There are pretty good animal trails to follow in the direction of the cache but I recommend a trusty caching stock. Favourite point from me just for the effort required! How on earth did you find this spot CO?

29-Mar-18
Not sure if my Gps was playing up, but we walked a LONG way from the track and still didn’t make it to GZ. Didn’t feel good about potentially tracking weeds and pathogens around the park so headed back to the main track.

25-Feb-18
Running away from home with 1minniemoo and nyssaflutterby for the weekend and after caching our way up to the mountains yesterday, we had a good nights rest in a lovely log cabin and set off early this morning to walk out here.
The views were awesome, the falling drop Bunyas in the forest a little scary and the cache easily found.
The walk to this one was interesting, such a complete change from the tracks.

25/2/18, 11:07 am Find #1496
Day two of our weekend adventure filled escape. Having got up this morning to beautiful weather, we headed out to tackle the two caches along these tracks.
Having done the other cache, we continued back along the trail and on to this one. Arriving at the lookout we stopped briefly before donning our packs again to continue where trail did not seem to go towards the cache. I'm sure the mum with her two kids wondered why we left the end point, and perhaps even what would become of us.
After a bit more of a trek, we arrived at GZ then just had to work out which xanthoreae was the right one.
Thanks for the cache Albyalbatross&Nicole.

GPSr has me walking in circles but eventually found it. Great spot.
Next person could you bring a pen? This one has run out.
TFTC!

24-Nov-17
An overnight camp in the Bunya Mountains with plenty of bushwalking to find all the spectacular scenery and great caches here, seemed an ideal opportunity to test out my new swag and visit a top spot.

There are several track closures in place making the walk to this one a little longer, but after finding a certain seat with a view, I trudged on nonetheless. There are some lovely cool areas down by the creek and loads of majestic bunya pines to be seen.

At the lookout I spotted a faint footpad and followed it to GZ where I used the time honoured technique of tapping one's walking pole among the undergrowth until a hollow metallic clunk is heard Big Grin. It was located on about the 10th blackboy tested, hurrah!

On the way back I spotted a large stick across the track, with a peculiar diamond pattern. Eek, a decent sized carpet python that stayed motionless allowing me to snap some pics before moving on.

Thanks for the hunt **albyalbatross&wendy**, this find makes Smile #4491. Discover our TB

Pprime had a free weekend and had asked for volunteers to join him on a bit of a road trip to do some cache maintenance and pick up a few "old" caches that he had on his list.

I checked and found that I also had a free weekend and the list of caches were also on my TO DO list so put my hand up. Little did I know that the weekend would involve 1400km on the road and at least 12km of hiking and bush bashing.

As the direct route from the car park has been closed for maintenance we decided to take the walk out to Seat with a View and then make the detour to get this one on the way back. We estimated that it would be an extra 3km walk but we were determined that we would get this one before we headed off to St George for the night. It was going to be a long day as it was after 3pm when we found this one and we still had 5km to walk back to the car.

28-Oct-17
Been wanting to get out this way for some oldies forever, and with a chance free weekend appearing, and Crew153 also free, and keen, a 1400km round trip to incorporate 6 oldies - as far west as St. George, and some others in and around Stanthorpe was hatched.

Having been to the seat a few kms over, we were heading back to the car and a well deserved rest. One more side trip out to here. The 'round trip' path was closed, so every step in meant a step out later. But trudge along the creek we went (it is quite pretty), listening to the bird song around us - and distant sounds of exuberant children. Reached the end and trudged on - through the Xanthoreae forest and up the final mound to GZ. Phew. A lot of scrambling around up, over, around and under before finally spotting our quarry. Now back to the car and air conditioning.

Thanks for placing this cache, albyalbatross&wendy. Found in good condition.

Day 1 of the Big Bunya Blitz

I'm on the quest to find 50 of Queensland's oldest and finest caches and there just happens to be 4 at the Bunya Mountains. What a shame, LOL! I've managed to convince the family and some muggle friends that we need to visit this beautiful part of the world, so we're going to spend the next couple of days doing quite a bit of bushwalking Big Grin

This was one of our target caches today and it didn't disappoint! The walk in is lovely, but I think the best part comes after reaching the point of interest. So many changes in the forest. We walked across the grassy balds and up into the grass trees. They are all in flower at the moment and quite stunning and there are so many of them. We even got to see honeyeaters and spinebills drinking the nectar from the flower spikes. It was so distracting, I nearly forgot to search for the cache Big Grin There were lots of places to look and I was feeling a bit anxious that I would come out with a DNF, but I just happened to look at the right angle and saw the familiar outline of my favourite type of container, yay! It is in great condition for being 15 years old and so worth the walk in. TFTC albyalbatross&wendy, a fave point for the whole caching experience Smile

Co-ordinates spot on, almost stepped on the cache. Nice walk through the grass trees.
