Early morning cache with the GeoKid today. Thanks for bringing us out here, often drive straight past on the way to the beach. It was nice to stop in and enjoy this amazing area and wildlife. As below, were unable to find the specific rock, but photo from the edge of the walkway. TFTC.

This is such a very important and special place. I found lots of these petroglyphs, maybe it's this one, not sure. Thankyou for bringing us here. We found your cache today 22 September 2024 2:31pm , while enjoying another day in our beautiful countryside. TFTC longfella

WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 103 - Pannawonica to Dampier via Fortescure River Road house. After two fantastic days around the mining town of Pannawonica, it was time to move on. I had a DNF to avenge along the way and then , after a midday arrival at Dampier and set up, I spent a long afternoon on some very hot hills amongst red rocks. Something I am going to get used to over the next few days. I had a look at the rock art in an area much changed from my last visit, and then an afternoon visit to a pub to try and cool down before a warm night overlooking the Dampier Archipelago and the tunes of ore loaders going all night. Only a short hop to Karratha tomorrow, booking van sites has been a real hassle.Without the van, I spent a fun afternoon around the Burrup peninsula and Dampier visiting caches that were not too hard to get to. I had a good look around here in 2018 when there was no boardwalk, and you needed to pay to go in. Today I just followed the concrete trails and read the signs. I had no luck with the assigned rock, I took an image from the trail like others have before me.Thanks for the cache longfella48766.6 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & Bush Bashing A#127**Albida**

It took 9 years to return to Burrup Peninsula. Last time I didnt know about these engravings and learnt about them through the activism algorithm.Although it is good to be allowed to visit this "sacred place", it is sad that I had to drive through the gas expansions, we tried to stop, to get here.Tip, you do not need to climb to find this.

Very peaceful place

01-Jul-24
Hiya! I couldnt for the life of me find that exact rock, so I took a pic where everyone else did-in the hope that its in there somewhere:) This is a fabulous place! TFTC!

28-Jun-24
Sorry for the late log. I just realised this one had slipped by us. Remember the day very well, we scoured / scratched around in the drizzle. Water foes help the engravings stand out, and we were very impressed with the amount we could see. Thanks for highlighting this area.

A caching trip from Canberra, ACT to Cape York, Qld and then around the gulf to East Arnhem Land, NT then over the top of WA to Perth.Interesting detours to Thursday Island, Mabuiag Island, Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Hells Gate, Nhulunbuy, Wadeye, Litchfield Nat Park, Wyndham and the Gibb River Road.TFTC.A great amount of art amd markings. Grabbed the support of a bunch of tourists for the find.

What a great location looking for scratchings and different images on the rocks. Very scenic and so much fun to have the several other visitors who arrived all searching for the specific rock with us!

Found 16:03Three months of travelling in Western Australia with Muggle friends from the East coast; stopover in Singapore on the outward and return flights. Caches and labs where they are on the way and can be done without too much effort. You may forgive me for using the same standard phrase everywhere, but there's not much more to it than that. Many thanks to all the owners for making our hobby possible. If there is anything wrong with the cache, more detailed information follows.

Found with e.gregory1 on a trip from Adelaide to north-western Western Australia. We spent four nights in the north-west, staying at De Grey River near Port Hedland, Point Samson, Dampier and SW of Karratha to target a selection of caches while in the general area. A great place to spend some time at this location learning about the life and culture of indigenous peoples. Thanks for the Virtual cache longfella!

Found on a trip to Western Australia from Adelaide with FeatherWaite. We stayed at Dampier last night and after a short detour back up the Burrup, we cached around Karratha, did some shopping, restocked and refuelled before heading to Miaree Pool the set up camp for the night.I enjoyed completing this old virtual cache and exploring some of the rock art/engravings.It didnt take long to spot what was required. Thanks longfella for the cache.

An amazing place to visit while spending a couple of days in Karratha!I couldn't see the exact rock in the photo so took a photo as close as I could get to the co-ordinates without going off the walkway.Awarding a favourite point.TFTC

Managed to tag along to the back of a tour with local guides..... very interesting----------Decided to do a long road trip, flying in from Canberra, starting and finishing the drive in Port Hedland. It was a long day of flights, followed by 7 days of lots of kilometres. I stopped at every 'point of interest' along the way, I wanted to miss nothing! Earthcaches, Virtuals & AL's are always very good waypoints for interesting things as well.Every night I downloaded a bunch of podcasts and these made the kilometres fall away. This was the first outback road trip I have done where I saw more emu's than kangaroos. The wild camels walking in the desert were also very cool to see. My trusty swag served me very well.

#785 ~ Whilst I was unable to locate the exact petroglyph, I have proof I was here. I saw places where it may have been that was beyond the viewing platform but being a sacred site, I did not feel right venturing off the allocated track to investigate. TFTC and bringing us to this amazing site.

23-Sep-23
We are visiting this area and came to check out the petroglyphs. There are quite a few and some are hard to imagine what they are. Thanks for bringing us to this area

Such an amazing spot, thank you for bringing us here! Spent a lot of time checking out the various artworks and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thanks I have been here 3 times in 1999, 2017 and this year. You could walk everywhere before and there were so many different ones to look at. I understand the need to preserve the beauty that is here. An absolute treasure in our country.

22-Jun-23
A quick trip to the area so with a bit of time headed over to get a select number of caches. This being an older virtual was of course on the list.
Some great bits of art around the walk.
This certainly took a bit to find and the afternoon sun doesn't show it up that well. As Brad 7 Janet said probably not many actually find the right rock.

Fascinating location, thanks for bringing us here.

22-May-23
Amazing place. Found the sneakily hidden rock art image which faces away from the path.
Fortunately I did not need to climb at all as neither Janet or I would not have been happy to do that. And of course there are warnings not to do so.
Image attached with Brad and the target rock art. Frio the photos we were not sure that too many others have actually found it so it was good to see it is unchanged after another 20 years in its long life.

Interesting place, didn't feel like the right think to do to climb on the rocks here, so I took a picture from the bottom

Enjoyed wandering around here admiring the rock art and reading all the interesting plaques. Photo added. We came here two years ago to view the rock art, but it was closed due to the beautiful upgrades that have been done here. I’m sure it has changed quite a bit since this virtual was set. Nice to see that the art is now protected.

I am sooo impressed with all the different carvings, I could not see the one you asked for, but there are so many great carvings. Could not make out the ship either. Nepeancacher beekeeping Geocoin visited, photo attached as evidence.

TFTC we had fun looking for all the different art work, amazing history. Thinking this is the rock. Not 100%

Couldn’t find the exact rock, but hoping that this is quite near! Enjoyed playing where’s Wally, trying to find emus, kangaroos and footprints etc. An amazing place to learn about our history

Day 13 of our 3 week break in the north, we spent the day exploring the sights of Dampier & ended up around Hearsons Cove where we stopped to check out this location... The day before a protest was probably not the best time to visit this place as they were everywhere Surprised Still we managed to find some rock art & enjoyed reading about it Cool

Thanks for drawing it to our attention longfella [^]

So glad we came here. For sure the boardwalk and info signs were not here when this virtual was created, so could not get to the GZ mentioned. Here is another pic though. Thanks for bringing us here.

On an Adventure North. We have hitched the caravan are are intending to find some sunshine and warm weather.

Travelling along Hwy 94 and Hwy 1, our destination is Broome, via Karijini NP, then the trip home is along the coast sampling the towns we have yet to visit.

Of course along the way we will be getting a cache of two ......... and lots more.

The Rock art work is fascinating. We did the local tour, and our guide gave us great insight into this area.

Thanks for the vitual.

Thanks longfella for bringing me to this location and taking the time to hide and maintain this cache. I found the cache at 14:34:00. This was my Find 35 for today out of a Total number of 50 Finds and 4 DNF for for this Caching Outing. The cache was found in Good Condition and I signed the log and returned the cache as I found it.

I'm logging a DNF for this one because despite being in the right area, I just could not spot the scratching in the picture. I was not willing to venture off the platform because the gate at the stairs was locked, so I figured that meant we weren't supposed to go down into the creek bed. Shame, because I doubt I'll ever be back.
Screenshot shows the closest I got without leaving the platform.

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I stand today, and pay my respects to their Elders past and present.
A lovely spot for quiet contemplation. Ive learned a lot. Out of respect for the spirits of the traditional owners of this land i did not take photos of the rock paintings and carvings and i didnt stray off the path. The pic I have attached is hopefully enough detail to show me there without being disrespectful.
Thank you for bringing me here.

In K-Town for work and I could pass up the opportunity to visit this area and log a couple of virtuals.

It was a warmish day but by 5pm was quite pleasant. I enjoyed the walk to GZ and looked around for a while trying to pinpoint the required piece of art. Wasn’t too comfortable climbing across all the rocks so located a nice piece of rock art and took the photo.

Thanks for placing this virtual in such a great spot.

longfella SVKR_WA is happy to have found your cache Scratching about on the Burrup today at 17:07:25 2 Oct 2019. This brings my find count to 3821

Beautiful winters day to be out caching. The gorge had a few muggle cars parked when we arrived but we only came across one other couple while searching for the right feature. Took a bit of looking about but finally found the right artwork. Thanks longfella

02-Jul-19
On our AdVANture around Australia we found ourselves in Dampier/Karratha for a few days so ventured out to explore the Burrup Peninsula... Unfortunately in the wisdom of the boffins in high places the access road to Deep Gorge was being redone in the height of the tourist season, but none the less we found a back way in and were able to enjoy what we came for. Finding the specified rock was a whole other other, but with the help of all the visual clues we eventually made a plausible find. Thanks for the cache to mark our visit here longfella.

Up in Karratha and Dampier for work. Fly home later tomorrow so thought I'd come out and see the Burrup even though the weather is a tad warm.

Lovely artwork and not even hard to find the EXACT artwork needed for this cache, obviously a bit too hard for a couple of previous finders

TFTC and bringing me to this beautiful area Smile now time to head further around and go for a swim

I am currently visiting Wickham/Roebourne on a geocaching trip
Today I am having a RDO and set off early in the morning to Dampier
I logged a couple of caches on the way into town and then
I continued on a drive around the area finding various caches
Just a short drive from the previous cache
This is a place that I have been wanting to visit if ever I got the chance and now the time has come
I arrived at the carpark and got chatting to an older gentleman, his wife had wandered off to look for the petroglyphs and had been gone a long time
I told him that if I saw her I would let her know that he was worried about her
I set off up the track and wondered at the large piles of red boulders either side of the gully
The track follows a dry watercourse which meanders up the valley
It was very hot in the midday sun and the boulders radiated the sun heat making it even hotter
I soon met up with Molly and told her that her husband Don was a bit worried about her
She was absorbed in looking for the artworks and we were soon both spotting many of them scattered around the narrow valley
We spent a bit of time finding and photographing many various images
Some were difficult to see due to the brightness of the sun but if you could catch the light at the right angle the artwork would cast a faint shadow contrasting on the surface and the image would show clearer
It was getting too hot to stay here so we headed back to the cool of the vehicle aircon

This is my third Virtual today
I have not got many of this type of cache so it's a great thrill to be able to add more to my tally

This is such an amazing place, full of detail and inscriptions on the Rocks. The stories that would have been passed down through the generations would make awesome storybooks for the children.
Plenty of reminders not to clamber over rocks, therefore our photo is one pointing to some precious artwork.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful spot.

Before we arrived there we had no idea how this gorge would look like. Yesterday evening we read the listing and looked at the picture only casually. Today at the location we found out how difficult it is to locate, but we had no internet access and hardly remembered it. So I took several photos and hope they are accepted.

In town once again (only flew home a few weeks ago) but this time I have muggle here (his first time for many years)
And the 200 series so able to grab the caches previously out of my reach in my daughters 2wd.

This one had me stumped for a good 15 minutes then I Turned around to see what muggle was doing and I found it.
Quite tricky really when two gps's were saying different directions

Not sure if I got the right rock. I had a look at the photo the night before we headed down and when we arrived at GZ I saw a rock with carvings on it that I thought was the same so I took the photo plus plenty of others from rock around the area then headed off to the next one.
That evening when I was checking out the photo again it didn't look the same,
Anyway it was a great spot

With so many caches around the area we decided to spend two nights here and have today to explore Karratha and Dampier without the camper trailer on the back and a very pleasant day was had indeed

We were really impressed that we would have the chance to do three virtual's in one day and we have to say in three great areas. This place was amazing and we enjoyed every minute we spent here which turned out to be about an hour and a quarter because as try as we may we couldn't find the required petroglyph. We aren't sure if it was the seeding spinifex hiding something important, we are more inclined to believe that it was just our old eyes and the sun possibly at the wrong angle that stopped us finding it. No for want of trying we expanded our search area by nearly thirty meters, cleaned the glassed three of four times but still didn't see it.
We have added a picture of a petroglyph that we did find and hope this is good enough to log a find.
If not we will happily delete our log.
Many thanks again for setting up and keeping this one alive, it truly is an amazing place, another favourite point from us.

Visited the gorge today with Coruze. What a fantastic place to view the aboriginal art. We saw quite a number of specimens of the ancient art. We did notice the midden as well. When walking through the gorge we were tracked by an inquisitive goanna which added to the experience. Thanx for this virtual.

A couple of days ago I was looking at the geo-map and noticed 3 virtuals in Karatha Big Grin
In the company of troobloo a plan was soon hatched. Karatha was our next destination. Virtuals are a rare commodity these days and automatically catches our attention Smile
We asked the information Centre if we could leave our car and camper there so we could belt outo to GZ and it was our lucky day. The lady in the information Centre was a geocacher Surprised ( I didn't get her caching name, but I should have, sorry if you are reading this)
Anyway out we trot to this cache we parked at the carpark and started walking down the track. Stupid me didn't look that we'll and when I did look at the GPS we were going totally the wrong way! I said that we may be parallel and the path is going to go round the corner and head back the other way to get around the rocks......u'mm nope I was wrong [:].......back to the carpark we went and found the right track.....I'm such a goose sometimes!
Anyway we scrambled over the rocks and started to see the artwork. Troobloo has a much better eye than me and it was him that pointed most of them out. We looked and looked and looked. Up and down up and down until finally I heard "Here it is"
Troobloo went down further into gorge and noticed a goanna licking his lips slowly walking towards him so he back tracked pretty quickly.
We took and lot of photos but this one was my favorite [^]
Thanks you longfella for enticing us out to see this awesome area that we thoroughly enjoyed the hunt.

Drove in and parked close to the walking track into the gorge. Off we went, hoping to find and photograph the one special piece of rock art. After arriving at GZ we scrambled around a bit before looking at the rock from the right direction and recognising that we had found the right one. Took a photo and wandered back to the geo vehicle (and the air conditioning). Thanks to longfella for another interesting cache.

Day five of Barnzy12 and Cravo10 adventure to the Northwest of WA, filling out boots with LGAs, rare DT, old caches, and good old fashioned red dirt!

Today we had an easier day planned with not so much driving! Staying around the township of Karratha, we had a nice sleep in and then warmed the car up on the way to Dampier to pickup a couple of caches on the way to meeting local cacher grandadbazza at the same location as dimor recent event.

We had a crack at the archived cache nearby but couldn't get it from its hides hole so left it alone even with a previous finders assistance, after a good chat with Barry we parted ways to collect some very rare virtual caches around the burrup peninsula and some semi off road caches including an earth cache.

We were about two thirds of the way through out Dampier caching run when notifications came through for a new multi not too far away, so we completed the 4x4 duties and then backtracked all the way to the red dog statue and claimed a very swift FTF some 1200km from home. Special thanks to dimor for a well put together multi that was simple enough for us simple minded cachers.

We then continued along the plan collecting as many caches around Dampier as possible, with some not attempted due to the extreme heat and the amount of caches hidden ontop extremely hot rock piles which have burnt my hands enough this trip.

We finished up on the Dampier area after seeing my favourite little island around sams island, such a wonderful spot just a hop skip and jump from he shores of Dampier.

After lunch we collected a few more smileys around Karratha before heading to Roebourne, Wickham and point Samson to collect all the smileys in those towns to make tomorow Journey a little easier, as we now only have to detour to Cossack on the small ish drive to port hedland.

A huge day out collecting 3 virtuals, heaps of traditionals, several multis, a puzzle and an earth cache. Full on day for caching finishing up around 8pm with some take away atop a small lookout hill.

Looking forward to heading to Port Hedland tomorrow via Cossack, Whim Creek and a few other sights!

Great spot, add fav

On the way home I got the camera out and started taking some photos of the sun setting "the famous Pilbara sunset" trying to remember all the settings to get a great photo

Another smiley added here today on a 5 week Pilbara and Kimberley break, as a child growing up in the Pilbara, we regularly visited Hearsons cove however the rock art wasn't discovered then so thanks for bringing us here to see such a special part of Australian Aboriginal history TFTC

Overnight in Karratha, we decided rather than do traditional caches we would do virtuals and learn something about the area. We unfortunately could not spend much time here and did not find the artifact in question so not logging find. we did enjoy our time here thanks for bringing us to this location. TFTC.
