I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get through the fast flowing river. I then saw a couple of joggers making their way through so followed their path, then walked along the extremely muddy track past the campground and on to the ruins. Once I got closer, the icon remained on the map but because I had no phone signal it wouldn't direct me there, so I had to rely on the blue dot getting closer to the green icon. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk around the ruins. Thanks for placing a cache here. TFTC
Epic mission. Incredible history. We walked from the campground and crossed the river to come up from below. Magnificent scenery. Thank you.
Headed north with fitzy_1965 and albida33 for the June long weekend.
Headed through Oberon on our way to Rylstone for a Community Celebration Event on Saturday. A loop north above Rylstone on Sunday to pick up some older caches and then out to Newnes on Monday before heading home. Found a nice spot to set up camp for the two nights. Super cold on the first night but was more frosty on the second….go figure.
Day 3 saw us packing up our tent with the frost still present….my fingers took a while to recover. We headed home via Newnes which produced a lot of wonderful sights.
A nice walk out to the ruins and a relatively easy find. We were amazed to see a couple of abseilers making their way down the cliffs nearby.

24,887. Found with minniek and albida33 during our 2021 June Long Weekend trip up to the Rylstone region.
Heading north on the 2021 June Long weekend to the Rylstone region for a Community Celebration Event, some Adventure Labs, and a few of the surviving golden oldies caches of NSW. Day 3 dawned with a nice frost which made packing up camp interesting ! Then we headed into the bakery for sustenance before heading out on the caching trail for a few more caches before heading home. This cache was a must do for the trip. The long drive out was well worth it for the stunning views. Once at the gate the short walk in and up was done, and after about 10 minutes of searching albida came up with the find - nicely tucked away in its hidey hole. Signed the log, replaced the cache as found, then headed off towards home while watching the mad abseilers up that mighty rock wall in front of us !
Thanks The Rats !!

Weekend trip to Rylstone June 2021. I joined with Fitzy_1965 & MinnieK for a drive to Rylstone and the surrounding area for a long weekend of caching with a Community Celebration event as the final goal on Saturday. We also did some caching around Oberon on the way and a day on a loop via Mudgee & Gulgong to visit some older caches. On the way home we stopped in at Newens as well. A cold but fun weekend away.
The last cache for the day was another nice walk in the bush up to this old mining site. The cache was in a logical spot at GZ, but still took way too long to locate with poor GPS reception. I think it was 18 years ago, before I had a 4wd that I was up here last. Happy Birthday !

Liked this one. Great area to explore on a coolish day. Sadly you cannot bring your dog for a swim and bushwalk here. Walked the 1.7km from the Hotel car park. Easy flatish walk. The last 50 metres gets confusing. The area to search is full of spider webs, long grass, and grass seeds. Narrowed down gz. Cache hidden away out of sight. A lot of logs give confusing help. Took ten minutes to find. Signed and replaced. Cache all good. Fav point. Tftc
Camped at Newnes, we went for a drive, and then a walk to the ruins. MrT continued on to GZ. The fires had burnt the area, and a lot of weeds have now sprouted up. After a short search, he located the cache in a safe spot. Cache and log book are in good condition. TFTC The Rats
The fire threat has now passed, but I'm not sure if the cache has been affected. I'll enable it but will be in the area soon to check on it.
The cache is still there. Found it during the walk around the ruin.
Very interesting.

Looked all around, no idea where it could be, even searched ruined house foundations nearby.
Found with some camping mates while the cache owner was relaxing back at camp! TFTC
With some spare time up our sleeve from some hiking around newnes, we crossed the river to check out some of the historic sites. Utterly amazed by how much is here, we spent about an hour exploring and made our way to the top. A little anticlimactic at GZ but we found another non active cache nearby. TFTC!!!
We had a pleasant drive through this extremely scenic valley. We were enjoying the 2km walk from the river crossing when we came to a locked gate only 500m from the ruins. We found a sign stating that there is currently going to be hazard reduction burning nearby and for safety reasons no one is allowed past this gate. Fines apply, etc. Being, in general, law abiding citizens we turned back. If you are planning on attempting this cache, it may pay to check an RFS website.
We came to Australia for a holiday. First time ever! Rented a really nice airbnb flat in Wheeler Heights and our very friendly landlady let us borrow their camping gear. So we came to Newness in order to see some wild kangaroos. Mission accomplished already during the hike from camping to cache! The cache was easily found and in good condition. It seems to be about 60 m off coordinates - at least according to my phone
Thanks for introducing this place and TFTC. Greetings from Finland!

After setting camp for 5 days i went to the ruins for a walk and this cache. Must of been such a different place way back then. Found the cache and enjoyed the walk back to camp tftc
In all the years we've been coming up the mountains, we have never been out to Newnes itself, despite spending a lot of time playing on the plateau. With a very windy day making our original plans look dodgy we decided to drive out here instead. And were so glad we did. So much more here than we expected - can't wait to come out here to camp.
Found the cache fairly easily, only to find that coincidentally the previous two finders are good friends and caching companions!
Even saw a wombat on the way out, what more could you ask for?

We visited Newnes campground many years ago one Easter weekend and promptly turned around never to return! Until this weekend that is... We were scarred by the sight of hundreds of muggles swarming the area. It was disgustingly busy!
Well, this weekend, it was a different story. There were a handful of other campers enduring the minus 5.5 degrees temperatures but we found ourselves a beautiful secluded site on the '4wd' side of the river. And, possibly for the first time ever, we ended up with a spot drenched in early morning sunshine whilst most were still freezing in the shade.
And so, after a nice breakfast and packing the gear away, we headed off to the start of the ruins walk. It was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed the walk around this fascinating area. Only last summer we did the Glen Davis shale mine tour with the Webguy's so it was good to finally see this place that we'd heard so much about back then.
The cache itself was an easy find, and it was interesting to see that one of our local caching friends found it only last weekend. But if that wasn't coincidental enough, it turned out that he camped in exactly the same spot as us, and even left the wood behind that we used for our fire!

My second visit to this region in 2 weekends having never been this way before. What a beautiful area to stay in the valley. Camping with my muggle mate, there wasn't much of a chance to cache, but with this one on our walk to the ruins, the opportunity arose. A short detour from the track and I had CIH after checking the wrong places at first. Of course, where else would you place a cache around here? All good in the cache and log book nice and dry. And some unloved days too! TFTC and the chance to examine this bit of history. I will definitely be coming back to SENWEN/NEWNES another day.
On our short weekend trip and stay nearby ...

Found with the kids while doing the ruins walk while camping for the weekend at newnes.
Set up camp at Newnes for the long weekend and set off for our first cache for the weekend. What an amazing walk through history. The ruins and the views of the rocky mountains. I so enjoyed the coke ovens and there history and to see them was the highlight of the amazing walk. Thank you so much The Rats, a fav from me.
In the area for an event organized by our local caching group. The event was first planned for Newnes, but was moved, but we decided to stick to Newnes, as I always wanted to come here, as I knew it for its Railway history. To the cache. Arrived early Saturday morning, set up camp and then visited the "pub". Drove the lux to the extent of the road way, then walked in. All the while, trying to get the gpsr to find some satellites. Phones were useless. Had not really researched the cache very well, so did not realize it was on the walk we were on. It was only after we had taken a short cut on the Ruins walk, and were heading back, that the gps finally had a fix, and told us that the cache was back there. Quick detour and a reversal of the track, (everyone else was walking the other way) we managed to find the approximate gz. After a quick search, I saw something out of place, which brought us to the cache. Nice hide, and thanks for bringing us here. The rest of the trail was the best bit, coke ovens etc. And the cache cleaner even found a pathtag. Out here? Bonus. TFTC. Fav awarded.
A very late log, but found this one during the easter weekend of 2016. Very interesting place to explore.
Came out with the rats for an overnight camp and as Dad did some maintenance on the cache we added our names.

Here we are at the nearby resort and do ready for a walk
It was raining quite a lot in the last days so that we do pity the many campers nearby this area
Crossed the creek with the cat, used as the only ones the parking area, walked the trail and off-trail for the last meters
God jumps of course but the cache is good to fine and in good order

Took us a while. Two gps's said completely different things. Should have spent more time using our cache eyes than looking at our phones! What a great area to explore! Tftc
We are spending a week in the Lithgow area for the September School holidays, staying at the Lithgow Caravan Park. Today we were heading out to Newnes, and visiting a few caches along the way. This was our 3rd find of the day, 43rd find of the holiday.
We have been to Newnes on many occasions, both on camping trips and day trips. Have always loved this place, but this was to be our first "caching" visit as we were mere muggles on our previous visits.
Arrived at Newnes about 10:30 AM to find the place packed with people. There were camp sites set up all over the place, and the main campground was very full. I've never seen so many people here, but then again we have never been here on an October long weekend before.
After a quick visit to the old Newnes Hotel, I can still remember when it was on the other side of the road and sold beer, we drove the 4X4 geomobile over the creek crossing and down to the ruins parking area. This too was full of vehicles, and we got the last parking spot. Others would now have to park along the roadside.
Walked up to the coke ovens and then continued along the ruins walking track until the GPSr indicated we were getting close to GZ. Left the track and, after a short walk through the scrub, we arrived at GZ to make a quick find. SLTN but left a coloured dice.
After finding the cache we continued along the ruins walking track, enjoying all of the historic ruins, and then back to the geomobile. Another enjoyable visit to Newnes, and even better now that we have logged it's one and only geocache.
Thanks The Rats for placing this one in such a great part of the world. Take a Favorite point from us.

I love this place. 3rd visit in the last year. Make sure you visit the pub with no beer
Found on the Sunday of June long weekend with jd660. Cold place in the morning at this time of year. 1st visit to the area & loved it. Day run into Newnes & a nice explore through the ruins with a cache to top it off. TFTC - left a penny
Found on the way back from a weekend hike down the Wolgan river. Cool ruins in this area. TFTC
Found on a wonderful and cool camping weekend. Geoson stumbled across big ass goanna on massive rock above cache. Took tb. Team Buggerme
A last minute decision to come out this way has ended up in us discovering one of the best parts of Australia we have had the pleasure in visiting. The Wolgan valley is stunning.
We arrived at camp with the Zwartclan thursday arvo, but waited until the friday morning for our tour of the ruins. We started off on the wrong side of the creek and had to bush bash to the Ruins Walk. I was thinking the ruins was only going to be a couple of the large round ovens. But the area is far more extensive than we imagined.
An awsome experience was had exploring the valley and this cache was one of the more enjoyable ones that I've found. All in good condition.
Thanks The Rats and cheers from Browngang

Wow, I had been to this area about 20 years ago and although the old Pub seemed impressive, I recall there not being much in the way of ruins. How wrong was I (appeared we may have stayed on the opposite side of the river). Well worth the Drive out, and I must say if it wern't for this cache we may well have missed these ruins again! TFTC The Rats. Fave point worthy!
Found a few days ago,(26th April) but had no coverage to log it. Went for a terrific walk with friends and took the 5yo to find the treasure. All in good condition. The place was crawling with campers closer in to the town as it was Anzac weekend. TFTC.
Back here again, with my Scouts today, showing them what a 'proper' bush geocache is like.
All the time I have lived around Lithgow, I have planned to get to Newnes. Last week WaywardWoman offered up a family camping weekend and my youngest two boys and I joined in.
So, with bikerbuddy guiding us around an old haunt of his, we had a fabulous tour around the old ruins. As a bonus we got to find this cache.
All together a great weekend.

# 2321- The family along with Team Canary came to the area for a weekend away camping. Suddenly we realised that our boys had really never been camping before, nor had they been to this great area and in conversation, neither had Team Canary, so with new places to explore and caches that had not been found, it was easy to entice the Canarys to come with us. After setting up camp, we set off exploring with bikerbuddy and the boys riding their push bikes. Checking out the ruins on the round trip track.Canary spotted this one fairly quickly, before confusing on to look at the rest of the ruins. Brought back lots of memories of our last trip out here years ago. Thanks The Rats for a reminder of those days.
Found this one while walking through the remains of the Newnes industrial area. Interesting history and a great place for a cache. Took geocoin. Many TFTC!
Found with Hoojar after a camping trip full of canyons and alcohol.
After lazying around in the water for a while, we braved the heat to find the cache in the ruins.
Dropped off a few travelers too.
Cheers.

After camping and canyoning at Newnes for a few days, we sadly had to leave. After packing up Chip and I lazed in the river for another hour. It was another hot day, and we had no reason to rush home. Oh, and I was nursing a NYE hangover
Eventually it was time to head home... But first we took the walk out to find this hide, our first of 2014.
Another Rats cache ticked from the list, and a nice old one it is too.
This is a fantastic spot to camp, highly recommend.

Ages ago bikerbuddy & I decided that it would be good to go camping somewhere really cold. But with a rapidly dying car, it didn't seem like a good idea to drive anywhere too far. So as soon as the new car was ready, we decided to go. Bikerbuddy suggested Newnes would be good, given his long connection with the area, he wanted me to see the ruins.
We made our way out leisurely, stopping off in Lithgow for a few caches on the way, and stopping at the hotel on the way. We made it to the campground midafternoon and quickly had our swag set up. Then it was off to explore the ruins.
The track we took was a nice walk, and took us past a few remains of houses, but eventually we had to find a way across the river. All I'll say about that is that the river is cold. Very cold!
But our feet were soon dried & warm again, and we started to explore the ruins. At first we just wandered randomly, heading towards this cache. After we'd found the cache & decorated the logbook with our signatures, we decided to follow the ruins walk. We had a fun time exploring the area, and bikerbuddy found some of the ruins he remembered (such as the huge retaining wall, and the paraffin house). There were others he remembered that we didn't find on the walk, but as light was starting to fade, we decided it would be better to head back to camp rather than keep looking. We'll have to look for them next time we come back.
Thanks for a great cache Rats, we loved coming here

I've long wanted to do this cache, but I haven't returned to Newnes since before I started caching. My great grandfather worked at Newnes and had a house somewhere near the pub. Naturally, nothing remains of that. When I was younger I was also involved in a project to restore the Pipeline Track to Glen Davis. I've been to Newnes many time. But like I said, not for a while now.
It seemed like a good time to go. Toriaz had never been to the Wolgan Valley, and I thought she might be interested. We stopped at the Newnes Hotel first of all. We got into a conversation with the owner, who found my grandfather and his son on the electoral rolls he has from that era. I told him of pictures my mother has of the Newnes reunion from the 1950s. Much of what is in the hotel is actually in those photos.
We walked to the ruins in the afternoon. This is where previous knowledge of the area proved problematic. It used to be fairly easy to walk down the track towards the Pipeline Pass track and then cross the river. However, the water is higher now, and we couldn't find an easy way across. In the end, we took off our shoes and walked across a sandy section. Then we climbed the hill until we found the paths that are well signposted for the ruins walk. We took a good look around the ruins, although the ruins path doesn't take you to a lot of the ruins I have previously seen.
We found the cache fairly easily along our way.
We followed the path back along the river and crossed back over the forward not far up from the hotel.
Thanks for putting this cache out. A favourite from me for the great location and the memories!

Long weekend in Newnes deserves a cache finding trip. A shame there was only one in walking distance from camp.
Coordinates were a bit off, but hidden in a typical way so it was an easy find. After which I went to look at the ruins.

A good cache in an interesting area. Lots to see on the walk and the cache is far enough off the beaten track that muggles were not an issue (also it was very quiet). Our first use of the Geocaching App as well as we left our GPS at home. It worked well!

Found after the triumphant victory of "the Caving Party" at Ratskin. Great weekend. We've seen these ruins before and they highly deserve a cache, so thanks for putting one here. DKMacca took the TB.
Was in the area with venturers doing Ratskin so we detoured on the way home to grab this,
interesting history of the area and more to see on the other side of the creek if you care to explore a little bit.
Left TB for "Socks" And "DKmacca "who we passed on the way back to the car.

Found after Not-A-Moot 2012.
Oddly enough my first time to this pocket of the world, having been countless times to the forest and a few to a mate's property around at Glen Davis.
Brought a few guys who'd heard of caching but not done it much - think they're hooked now.
Definitely coming back here, with enough time to explore more than just the kilns.
Dropped off an Army Man TB.
Cheers!

We loved walking around the ruins and found it very interesting! Great fun at the river crossing with the cars - 4WD best! This was our second find for today. We noted that someone else had also found the cache today and then happened to meet up with them back at the river crossing - great to meet another geocacher out and about. They knew we had found the cache because we had taken a small packet of bells from the cache (which the kids were tinkling as we walked around the rest of the ruins) that they had put in there! Great cache!
Great location. However, couldn't get our 2WD across the river to get closer to the cache. Jumped in the back of my son's 4WD to get closer. Cache wasn't too difficult to find, but would have been easier to find if we'd gone closer on the road. The old ruins are fantastic.
Did not find as phone lost all the saved caches I planed for a week before we went for a camp at newins . We walked the ruins walk any did some soft 4wb driving overall had a great weekend .Will be coming back in 2 months on Hume scout hike and will grab it then but will have hard copy this time.also took the TB pony with me was going to drop and pick up if I could have! Late afternoon walk around the ruins and a cache, what a great day this was. Did the glow worm tunnul the next day and would reccomend it to you.
We were camping at Newnes and decided to attack this cache, knowing it was in a historical area was a bonus. Just as we were about to cross the river, we noticed there was a little Hyundai stuck in the sand on the other side. Doing the Aussie thing, crossed the river, and we were able to pass them and pull the international tourists out of dilema with our trusty Landcruiser. Wasnt long before we were on our way to the ruins, parked the car and started our Trek. Found cache fairly quickly, then it was time to explore the old Coke Ovens. Thanx for bringing us out this way, Cheers The Rats
Found this cache while Camping at Newnes with Scouts. Seached in the most likely places and still couldn't find it. Read some past logs and guessed that I had to widen the search area and Bingo there was the cache all nicely hidden. The Co-ordinates are a bit out by about 7 metres. Always a great walk through here. TFTC

thanks to a seasoned cacher (not us) we were able to find it. The ruins opens your mind to how things were back in 1912. great spot for a cache. Thanks
It's a little hard in that the obvious places and red herrings are numerous. The GPS recep goes when you're at the cache for some large reason..
Could not find. 9 people looking. But had a great time. Should visit Glow worm tunnel.
Been here a few times over the years BC, so had to do this one. An interesting part of the ruins, with the rock garden and house nearby. Took book of quotes to read at the tent in the rain and left a ruler to go with the colouring pencils. TFTC
Followed the path of peter_mcc from the bottom to the top, but my excuse is that I'd just come from completing the fabulous Pipeline canyon across the creek. I looked all around GZ to no avail, and scrounged around some other areas nearby, also without luck. I ran out of time, so I had to give up and go... But I took one last look back upon my departure (as recommended by the cache name), and spied a suspicious stack of _______. Aha! So that's where it's hiding. CTFT.
Ruins walk through the bush and forest.
River crossing without our car was funny, nice hike.

Found with Tim. We didn't read the hint before we left which was a big mistake - my GPS wasn't working properly and so we walked along the bottom track for a while before the GPS sprang into life. So we headed off to the cache "cross country" - big mistake!! Approaching it from the bottom with a 5 year old was a lot more difficult than I expected. Once we arrived at GZ the cache was quick to find and full of things like pencils, stickers & a quotes book. TNLN TFTC!
Didn't think it would be hard to find, but couldn't locate it.
Great spot to visit so definitely worth the trip - camping with a boys group and walking around the ruins seemed a good time to find the cache.
Ran out of time - No luck - reading some other logs, maybe we should have spread our search wider.

Found this one while on a camping trip to Newnes with some friends. Have been here many times before and love the area. This is the first visit as a cacher so had to grab this one. A good hide that had us looking around for some time. Took a mate along for his first find and was very pleased to come up with the goods. TNLNSL TFTC.
We found this cache on the last leg of a three day bushwalk. We had set out from the Newnes Hotel walked up Zobels gully up to Constance Gorge and down to Deans Creek which we walked in and around to Rocky Creek. We followed Rocky Creek to the Wolgan river and then back via the ruins. It was nice to find the cache it would have been nicer if we didn't have to walk up yet another hill. Thanks for the cache. TNLN
A spur of the moment drive had us down at Newnes looking about the camping areas and up to the ruins for a walk. Last time we were here we followed the Ruins Walk markers but went in the other direction this time (much easier walk too). Once we had made our way up to the cache the GPS'r put me right on top of it for an easy find. As the afternoon was getting quite hot and not much breeze we did the duties and kept moving. A very worthwhile cache to do.
The sand in the crossing was quite soft and there wasn't much water flowing. A top spot down here.

Set up camp at Newnes and went for a wander in the ruins as it was getting dark. Forgot I had this one in the GPS. Pulled it out and did a "Go to nearest" when near the kilns and found it was less than 200m away so off we went. Not a quick find as it had us the opposite end of the rock but searched in the likely spots and found it. Didn't have anything to trade but there was a cigarette lighter in the cache which I removed as these are not supposed to be traded. Also I don't think firebugs need any encouragement.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Did this one on a camping weekend at this lovely spot.

Not sure what happened. Was on the ruins walk and the GPSr was telling me I was 3kms away? Anyway it was a great opportunity to visit the ruins. Hopefully I locate it next time!
Well it has taken us a while to get out this way and we don't know why. This is an awesome place and a place we will definately be returning to.
Cache was found with almost spot-on co-ord's (not enough difference to matter).
Thanks for bringing us here.

Homedg and I had a great time getting close to GZ before we were forced to leg the rest, glad of this though as we would of missed all the ruins (though I have seen them before) Nice hide Rats still in good condition with swaps and logbook all intact and well hidden, Thanks for bringing us back
Have been out here quite a few times before but never miss another chance, especially when there is a weekend of camping involved.
Having seen the remnants before it still amazes the infrastructure that was out here and my mind boggles at how they got all of this gear, and people, out here into this rugged area.
Top cache,
Thanks as always RATS

Spending the night at one of the other campsites on the ruins side of the river - need 4wd to cross! GPSr had GZ at the fallen tree, but broadened the search by 10m to get the lowdown on a more likely spot. Left some pencil packs for the waterproof pouch...thanks Rats - I can't believe this cache has taken us 4 years to do!
Found without difficulty near the kiln ruins.
Cache is in very good condition.
This cache does not get many visitors. So let me tell you now....The drive out to Newnes is thoroughly worthwhile. We stayed overnight at Litttle Capertee Camping Ground and walked over to the old Shale Oil Mine ruins.
Come on....pack the car with the camping gear, load in the geokids, and spend a night under the stars at 56h 0242396 / 6326310. The camping ground is wide, grassy and big, and it has basic toilets.
Contact NSW NPWS for an overnight camping permit.

Searched around with the geokiddies for about 45 mins with no success. Any hints would be appreciated!!
After having spent the night in the Newnes State Forest, and picked a number of other caches, we drove up to this beautiful area. We took the Ruin walk, and found the cache without too much searching.
Took Winnie The Pooh Match Game, left mini bottle champagne.

Explored the ruins during our stay down at the Capertee camping grounds. What a beatiful area. It's awesome at sunset. Amazed no one has logged a visit since April. We moved the Danish geocoin on and we left a book of quotes.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Found by Pi and Sigma.
Spent the weekend with some friends camping at the excellent Little Capertee Creek Camp site, what a magic spot. We were meant to do this walk on Friday but the weather conspired against us and we had to switch to Saturday morning. We thoroughly enjoyed the stroll around the ruins. It's hard to believe what this place looked like all those years ago.
GPSr was jumping between two possible locations. So I went one way and Sigma and our friend Reg went the other. The cache find technically has to go to our friend Reg who spotted it before we did. Top spot for a cache and definitely worth the visit.
TNLNSL.
Dropped of "MaMiFKA coin #2" Geocoin.

Found at 1430 and came at it from the lower direction, thought i was smart when reading the GPS near the honey combs? and said to the handbrake "it must be over there" and then switched the GPS of to conserve battery power until we got over there then found out it was back up there, at least i stumbled across a sleeping wombat on the way back up the hill. The cache is still in good condition and I decided to remove the D Shackle and leave a small Koala Bear. SL and thanks
We grabbed this cache whilst on an afternoon outing down to Newnes. Its been many years since we have been down here so it was nice to take the time to do the historic walk. Even the geokiddies agreed that it was a better than sitting around playing those mind numbing computer games.
Thanks rats for the bonus of a cache on our afternoon outing.
Took nothing left learning cards.

Second visit to Newnes camp grounds after a 5 year gap. Love the area, so much wildlife - saw a lyrebrid close to the cache, many roos nearby and scores of crimson rosellas.
Found the cache despite poor GPS reception. Massive black clouds were heading our way which resulted in a torrential thunderstorm later that afternoon.
Had nothing for swapping so TNLN
Great spot for a cache - thanks!
