Darwin to Adelaide Road Trip
Day Eight: Port Augusta and Whyalla
Weather: still sensational!

A different multi here, and I liked the GZ too. I pocketed two seriously out-of-bounds golf balls on the way. Thanks for this multi Bunya. A favourite.

It’s officially a mega - GCA1DNA “The Great Leap Forward”
Adelaide, South Australia. February 29, 2024
We would love to have your company.

Found while visiting Whyalla for a few days with Team Waldron and TeamAstro, with the aim of finding as many caches as possible in Whyalla and surrounds. Day 1 saw us travel up from Adelaide and tour the very scenic coastline around Port Bonython and Point Lowly. On Day 2 we headed out to the Fill In The Gaps (FITG) series, then to Iron Knob and back via the First To Find Power Trail (FTF PT) series. On Day 3 we cached in and around the City of Whyalla, and on Day 4 we made our way out to Whyalla Conservation Park before heading for home. Thanks for the cache Bunya!

15-May-22
Away for a few days with Featherwaite and Team Astro.

The plan was to get all the whyalla caches as well as the FTF series and the FITG caches.

Nearly got them all, just a few left for next time.

Nice view from here. Golf course looking green.

Another cache found during our 2022 South Australia Adventure using Geocaching as our guide.
We collected the information and claimed our smilie.
Thanks Bunya, we had a great time.

Checking out more of Whyalla, the steel city, where every corner has a rusty mint tin...
and some of the nearby coast today as well.

As usual, a day packed with exercise and great views. Cool

Spotted your cache along the way CoolBig GrinSmile

There are signs everywhere. We found the right one.
A little calculation and I'm back up near where I found a cache some time ago... more nice views!
Digging is a popular sport around here,

Appreciate Bunya for placing and maintaining this cache on our SA geo game map Cool

---

Searching with Purrfect Di and Jack the Monkey, finding and signing cache logs alone or with family and friends using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S21u, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just plain old dumb luck WinkCoolBig Grin Plenty of that luck stuff actually!!!
*Logs are composed and published using GSAK of course.*

A couple of maintenance assist tasks on the trail caches too. Looked like there had been some extreme weather since we were here last... oh yep, the floods the day after we left!!!

---
Caching is a hazardous activity!
Keep a lookout for sand traps, snakes, surprise cliffs, boxing roos, wombats, bulldust, and floods,
try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall out of trees...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- but especially lookout for any old bugs from alpha to omega !!! . [xx(]

Try to keep Travel Bugs as the only bugs you share and pass on Big Grin
Now everything's opening more - even more important to sanitise and safely distance!!!

Really good of all those placing quality caches out and about around the countryside areas,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game safe, fun, and interesting Cool

Thanks heaps for reading all this addition to the log word count! There's a challenge somewhere, apparently! You win a virtual smile for the effort and getting to the end of the log Wink

Spent some time caching today with ilook4geo, in between doing some domestic activities too. All went well and a c0uple of multis were thrown into the mix. It was a good day and some of the caches found really socked it to us. Each log was signed with two more names and we then headed off to continue the hunt. Thank you to Bunya for placing this cache which turned out to be a quite easy find, after the GPS decided to settle down and play properly..

16-Sep-21
Continued picking up some more of the caches available around Whyalla today, together with goingplaces2. Did more on the outskirts rather than in town. Had a good day and added some more smileys to the map. TFTC.

29-Aug-21
Full time nomads since 2014. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.

Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. There sure is a lot of puzzles here! Glad we had done the solving before arriving in town. Rain overnight meant there was some slip sliding happening as we tackled numerous off road tracks and climbs today. Good Fun in the Geo Cruiser [:o)]

Found with hevwalker on a much cooler day..... we finished the caches we had planned to do at the Conservation Park today due to the high temps and Fire Ban yesterday. Thought we would get some more in town..... headed to the golf course for his one. Was able to park close by posted coordinates....after working out how this multi worked with the sign which worked out to be easier than we first thought we quickly had the solved coordinates and headed off on foot .......spotted some furry locals just lazing around as we approached....we managed to get quite close before they bounced off.....after a bit of a walk we found the cache quite quickly and was heading back to the car to find the next nearby caches in amongst the backtracks again. In Whyalla on a 5 day mini break with scramping caching the area while doing some sightseeing...
We found the sign required to get the end coordinates...we thought about what we needed to do and hoped we had worked it out correctly...
We must have as we ended up where they took us and quickly located the cache...
Thanks Bunya Smile

This weekend, I headed to Whyalla to catch up with a few other Geocachers and attempt some of the trails there. On Saturday, we targeted the FTF power trail from Whyalla to Iron Knob, and then spent the evening and the subsequent morning driving some of Whyalla's back tracks. On Sunday, I visited Cowleds Landing and back north, only to get severely bogged in one of Whyalla's clay pans. I then returned home via the August series.

Today, we started the day at a meet/greet breakfast event, and then I headed out with hevwalker and scramping for a few more geocaches south-west of Whyalla along the back tracks and main road, followed by the December trail series. I then continued south visiting Cowleds Landing and the proclaimed nudist beach. I next found *Potty Time*, only to realise that I had driven on the nearby clay pans, and then sank into the soft clay below on my way out. Eventually I had help in getting out, and finished my remaining time in Whyalla completing the pipeline August series, and calling into Whyalla Conservation Park for a few high favourite caches. I then made the long journey back to Adelaide stopping at a few miscellaneous geocaches along the way.

It took me a good 10 minutes in rereading the multi-cache description once at the posted coordinates, and working out what I even needed to do in order to obtain the required numbers. Even then, I was a little doubtful, including of one letter's number given the likely change in pipeline operating companies and what impact that may have caused. With some numbers obtained and no way of checking, I just needed to trust in my observations and working.

I ended up driving and parked as close as I could to GZ, before making the walk. There were a couple of kangaroos that I bumped into, that must have been surprised to see me walking on such a hot hot day. It took me a few minutes to walk around at GZ, before finally making the geocache discovery. The cache container and logbook were in good shape. Thanks Bunya for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance.

Found It!
I went to the listed coords and saw the wrong sign at first but soon found the right sign. Then off to GZ for a surprisingly quick find! Not a bad view from up here either!

I am heading over from Adelaide to Port Lincoln to catch up with the geoson for the weekend, taking my time over a couple of days to explore, and to pick up a few (mostly) targeted caches along the way.

A nice simple little multi.

Thanks Bunya for the cache.

15-Jun-19
After retiring back to my Motel room and beginning to log my days finds i decided to grab me just one more cache for the day. Really wanting a Multi after failing at one earlier in the day i, [with a few bevvies in [:o)] lol] walked off to the listed co-ords of this one. A couple of golf balls already found, i arrived at the sign only to find it was faded and the word or words needed were not visible.
I tried a few things but it didn't work out, so i tried something else more 'relevant' and it all fell into place then [^]

Off to GZ and a few more golf balls found lol, i soon had the booty in hand and was SL at 16:35 on 15/6/19 to failing light, it being cloudy and all.

On my way home i came back with 19 Golf Balls in my bag lol...... even a 'BLUE' one lol. Who plays a blue golf ball?! ha ha Big Grin

I remember looking for this years ago, when there were few cache in Whyalla. Not sure why we didn't find it at the time.
Today, no problems finding this oldie, 1 yr and 4 mths since last finder... Dig Dig..

Spending a few days in Whyalla and found a few cache, or 300!
Had managed to solve all the puzzles before coming over too.
Of the nearly 300 found on the trip over and back from Adelaide, 95% were found within 50km of Whyalla Central, with approx a dozen dnfs also. Amongst all the finds was my 17000th find.
Also managed a lot of 'unloved' finds too.
What is it with Whyalla and mint tins? lol
TNLNSL
Thanks

Hi there Bunya.

We found your cache **"Dig?"** at 11:37:00 AM today. (This makes our find count 15847).

We cached around the Whyalla area today. On our trek we found a wide variety of container types. & ended up finding 6 caches with 1 DNF's.

Thanks for placing this cache here, without geocaching as our guide we would never have found so many interesting places on our travels.

**Coordinate Accuracy:** We found the cache around 2m from where the GPS said we should be looking. Wink
**Cache Condition:** The container and log book are in good shape.
**Took:** Nothing.
**Left:** Nothing.

Thanks for the hunt today,

Regards

Ian & Penny.

Tried this one yesterday but after having no luck called the search off and went back to the car and discovered I had one number wrong. bugger!! Too hot to return.
Today with more enthusiasm I returned today and walked straight to the cache.
Could not believe it's been so long since a find.
Thanks Bunya for the cache.

22-Jul-14
I have been ignoring this cache for a month now as I drove up and down the road past the steel works.
Today I took the detour into golfing central to find the cache Razz
Oh !! It's not a traditional [:o]

Well at least there is a connection to golf !!
Dig is what you have to do to get your golf ball out of the sand traps Razz

Another sort of digs was located at GZ and I soon had a set of coords to head for ....
.... and avoiding the golf course, I made it to the top of the hill.
And it struck me that this was a beautiful day, after so much wet weather !!
The visibility was perfect and the colours of the gulf waters, the distant mountains and the steelworks made for a great scene [^]

As for finding the cache .... well wasn't that a trial !! [:o]
I searched for over half an hour, but couldn't find a trace of a cache Sad

I was sure I had the correct coords !!
So I switched the GPS display from map, to straight lat and long and wandered around 'til the numbers matched ... and there was the cache [:o]
Huh !!??

My waypoint was 15 metres away ??
Another look at the waypoint details revealed the problem.
Dyslexia strikes again Red Face
It does help if you type the right numbers into your GPS !!

TFTC and views ... I can Dig 'em [^]

The container was well past its use-by and this cache gets few visitors now, but I don’t want to archive it as it was my first hide.
I’ve decided to let it live on as a log only preform tube.
Please note change in size and added hint.

10-Apr-14
Today, we picked up a few caches around town, that we had previously missed.
Sign was quickly found, and with a new set of co-ords, we headed off to find GZ.
A quick find, but container needs some attention.
Thanks for the hunt today, Bunya.

Another great cache. Very clever to identify things about WP1 and to use the same values in WP2. TFTC

05-Feb-12
For some reason we had a lot of trouble trying to figure out how to do the calculations. After lots of reading and re-reading we decided to just try it ... and came up with co-ords at about the correct distance. JO made the trek while I stayed in the car with Miss6 and Master1. TFTC.

After taking quite some time to obtain a solution, it was just a short stroll up the track and quick find. TFTC.

Nice multi, we enjoyed working this one out. Golfing Oldfranko is very impressed with the slicing ability of the Whyalla golfers. He found 4 golf balls on the walk to the cache, which would have needed quite a nasty slice to end up where he found them.
No swaps.
Thanks & happy caching.

What a beau.t little multi.Had been meaning to knock this one off, and today was as good as any. Took T.B which i hadn't realised was there, and must admit I didn't walk all the way back to the car to get a replacement, but the cache was well stocked. Lots of Golfers out today. Coords for both stages were very accurate. Thanks Bunya, hope to get to more of yours soon. Looking over some of the sites i didn't get to, i see a weird and wonderful assortment of travellers in some of the nearby caches.
