Although it lasted longer than expected, this cache is now extinct. However, evolution has taught us that the demise of one species usually results in the rise of another. Nature always finds a way.....
The kids were watching Jurassic Park last night and it reminded me that we better get out and nab this dinosaur cache before it was too late. We drove down to what look like a good starting point, but the lady at the house across the road put us straight and sent us back the way we had come a 100 metres or so.
After a walk and a bit of looking from the middle kids, the cache was extracted. A whistle () came out and a pack of marker pens went back in.
Thanks for the cache. It was a lot of fun.

As always, I checked the UBD before setting out using the UTM co-ords, however ended up on wrong side of creek in new housing estate. Never mind, drive to other side, locate track that everybody seems to miss, take a casual walk and I was onto it straight away. It seems after doing the Bay View cache (quite frustrating for some reason) I have got the knack of locating caches back.
Took some geckos and left a whistle for the geokids to terrorise the ears of unsuspecting parents. Also grabbed Motor City TB for further pizza adventures.

Finally got around to doing this cache. Managed to get to it before extinction occurred. Found that my plans to save the cache from extinction with a craftily devised breeding program may not work after all - (ammo boxes and tupperware have very complex reproductive cycles!!) Ok, enough genetics-speak.
Left swaps at home , so TNLNSL.
Thanks for the cache Manta!
Cheers

Well we thought we weren't going to be able to cache this weekend, but with a couple of hours to spare we decided to go and nab this one in case time flew by & it went bye-bye before we could get to it.
We picked up some relatives on the way (The Larsen Family) who'd been caching with us once before & enjoyed the experience.
We picked the end with the least walking, parked there and headed off... back hang on... this wasn't a level 1 terrain. The fact that we were pushing a pram didn't stop us from plowing through the untracked bush, over a creek and through a stack of trees until we finally arrived at that track that we could've just gotten onto to start with
Found the cache pretty easily. Twas very well stocked. We took a toy mobile phone and put in a toy mobile phone (kids eh?). We also took Wombat TB and put in Motor City Pizza TB.
The Larsen Family also signed the log book and did some swaps.

We scored this one today w/o much effort. if anything we made it hard by trying to take the short or direct route. amazing is our nack for finding the nice easy trail on OUR WAY OUT!
Dropped off the Wombat TB that we brought back from SA.

A quick explanation of what is going on here.
My plan with this series of caches is to leave them in the wild for varying lengths of time. Some would be active for months, others weeks and the ones I really wanted to place would only remain active for days or even hours, making the hunt to nab them that much more intense.
Unfortunately, the powers that be would not approve caches that were potentially going to last short periods of time. The GC.com guidelines stipulate that caches that last less than 3 months "may not be approved". The approver who worked on this one interpreted that statement to read "will not be approved" and canned my idea for short-term rapid-fire caches. The minimum period must be at least 3 months.
Subsequently, I amended the description page to reflect the approver's views and it now stands as you see it. Sure, I could have just changed it back again after approval and then gone and archived the cache within a day, week, month or so according to my original secret schedule but that's not how I play the game. I'm disappointed that the decision was not in my favour as I think the series would have been a lot of fun but I won't go against an approver's express instructions.
I still intend to 'mix it up a bit' with this series but you'll all have at least 3 months to log them before they go 'poof' and disappear.[xx(]
Happy to hear your opinions on this via a note here or gc.com email if you wish.
Simon.

Thanks Citria. I also got support from Lt Sniper on this.
Yeah..I dunno. It's a bit hard to fathom why it's a problem for them. The approver said they didn't want archived caches clogging up the web space but I wasn't planning a massive invasion of the things!
Still, I suspect some of these guys have long memories and while one Exctinctum cache might skip through, I may not get another one approved if they suspect it's only going out there to be 'killed off'.
I'm far from being the most prolific placer of caches but I certainly don't want to incur the wrath of the approvers for those I do put out!

It was all the more frustrating because I bumped in to Lt Sniper earlier who said he had found this one.
It took him 40 minutes because the satellites were all over the place and they were for me too. Finally gave up when some local kids took an interest in what I was doing.
Got two first finds today though which made up for this one.

Well I found it, but after 40 minutes....
This had me wondering all over the place and just before I was about to leave I found it (that would be right! )
Swapped chalk pieces for turtle magnet
3 local kids on bikes kept riding past probably wondering what I was doing
Thanks for this interesting and somewhat challenging cache Manta!

Well done Lt Sniper.
For some reason that area, while it doesn't look it, is a shocker for satellite reception. I couldn't get better than 11m accuracy even after 30 minutes. I hope to get down there again this week and do some proper averaging but, in the meantime, potential hunters can use an average of yours and mine.
I've upped the difficulty rating.

So the cache is endangered - but will still be around for 3 months?!?! A half-decent geneticist could mount a breeding program in that amount of time - it may never go extinct at all if I get my hands on it!
I think the whole "disappearing cache" thing sounds like fun. If everyone is aware that the cache may be gone by the time they get to it, then they can make a decision themselves as to whether they can be bothered or not. If you think it would be annoying, find a different cache to do!! Simple!!
Do you think the reviewer(s) might come around?
