A nice walking track and a big tree at the end. I'm pretty sure the big box in the tree was from the friends of the Blue Tier and not the cache. The coordinates for the cache were located about 60m from the big tree and we searched everywhere. There seemed to be a few trees that matched the hint and we searched high and low but couldn't find any kind of cache. Maybe someone else will have some luck

Thanks for the extra fun in this amazing location

After a night in powerless and Telstraless Weldborough behind the pub we continued on to Blue Tiers. We parked the Moho at the lookout and continued in the Jimny to try to get to the start of this walk. About 1.5km away from the parking spot we arrived at a massive downed tree over the road. We parked the Jimny off the road and continued on foot. Another 4 or 5 trees required clambering over.Eventually we got to the car park. We decided to do the full circuit as we have more time on our hands than we imagined. It was quite chaotic on the trails after the days of storms but we still managed to get around all the fallen trees and debris and only collected 4 leeches. I took a picture of the Friends of Blue Tiers stone carving on the way to the cache by the time we got back another tree was down and you couldnt even see the plaque, lucky we missed that (see photos). We loved our walk it was great to be back in the big trees. Husband got a cuddle at the Cradle Tree and I found the cache at the BFG. Log is a bit damp but otherwise in good order. On the way back to the Jimny we met the clearing crew so less downed trees for us to navigate on the walk back up the hill.TFTC and for bringing us here, always good to get a golden oldie cache and the trees really are magnificent

Big thanks to aloysius7 for creating this cache! Your effort brought an extra spark of excitement to our geocaching quest. This discovery was find number 1,111 for us, marking another memorable moment in our adventure. Living and traveling full-time across Australia in our Coaster Bus, we're always on the lookout for caches to uncover. Currently, we're in Tasmania, planning to explore this beautiful island for around 18 months or so. To see more of our travels, feel free to follow our journey HERE...

Todays plan is grab a number of caches that are out of phone range so hopefully by opening each one on my phone before I leave a service area, I will be able to find them. The BFG gets a OMG from me!This is definitely the highlight of this trip. I am in absolute awe of this place, even the tree ferns are giants! I was only going to walk down for the cache but decided while Im here I would visit the Cradle Tree, do the loop. I felt so small and so very young compared to these ancient, beautiful, old trees. If the hollow in these trees only appears after 150+ years of growth, some of these trees are just. WOW, I have trouble comprehending that amount of time and what was happening in the world then Friends of the Blue Tier have done an amazing job taking care of this area. This cache was placed just under 20 years ago and the walk in is still very magical.TFTC aloysiusKeep smiling

Took is a while! The tree in the hint is hidden by a fern. For others, it's definitely not the big box inside the tree

Cool location. Loved the walk down, took a seat to admire the guiant and almost reached down to grab the cache.

Another breezy, but thankfully warm day today after three cold sou'westerly days at Bicheno. So what better activity than ticking off a few more caches in and around the district. This is the last of four for the afternoon after a successful morning closer in St. Helens. Forgot to get the off-line details of these caches though, so we were running blind. Luckily we got some reception on the way in to the carparking spot, and the excellent (but I sugest necessary) hint took us directly to the right spot, especially given the huge widow makers from the BFG which almost made GZ unrecognizeable. Found in excellent (new) condition, logged and returned to hiding hole. TFTC aloysius7

20-Sep-21
Took us a bit to find the start of the track as we approached from Blue Tier (should have read the directions first!). Had a nice drive and detour to the Blue Tier anyway and explored the winding roads coming from the other direction.

Wow! What a fantastic forest and an amazing tree within it. One must give thanks to the Friends of Blue Tier for their efforts in protecting this beautiful piece of Tasmania. As well as the BFG there are some amazing tree ferns on the walk in - the biggest I have ever seen I think. Spent quite a bit of time looking at a large number of skinks sunning themselves on the bark of the tree.

Thought I might have trouble finding the cache due to a fallen tree, but fortunately it still allowed access to the cache. TFTC aloysuis7

Please note: the big container out in the open in the middle of the BFG is not the cache! I guess that has been placed by the Friends of Blue Tier as a log/record of visitors to this threatened forest.

With the strong winds of the past couple of days having brought down a few trees along the trail we had a couple of obstacles to overcome along the way, where as the Goose was worried about more falling limbs/trees my thinking was it's calmer today and what's coming down is already down for the moment.

At GZ this was even more evident as a tree had come down here too, but it is an old forest so what can you expect, thanks for another old important cache aloysius.

This weekend was meant to be a quick trip to the big island but with Gladys ruining that chance for everyone we came up with another plan and after a quick chat that Goose had never been to Musselroe Bay and i was more than happy to try and clean up the Northeast corner that is more than a days drive from home

Thanks for the cache.

It was a bit late when we arrived at the parking area but geocaches are crazy aren't they? We travelled light so we could move quickly down, down, down until we were halted by a fairly recent tree fall - this wasn't the only one we had trouble with. We eventually made it to our destination after passing another couple of biggies. Wow that is a big one! This area reminded me of the Big Tree Walk in the Styx Valley.
A fallen tree here has caused some damage with the seat looking more like a folded clothes airer now Sad We did quite a bit of exploring but were very conscious of the ascent back to the car, along with the fading light.
Thanks aloysius7 for bringing us here.

Up there with one of our favourite walks. Super important that our kids get to see how disgraceful logging of these areas are... and what exactly they're going to lose if that happens.
Thankyou.

05-Apr-21
What a giant. The kids enjoyed watching the family of skinks that were living on the lower bark of the giant

Bizarre find on this one. Found while doing some short walks with friends on holiday. Wasn't actually looking for caches as I didn't bring my GPS and had no phone signal. After a beautiful walk through the fern (and leech!) rich forest we came upon not only the tree, but a large Tupperware sitting bang in the middle of the hollow, barely hidden behind a piece of wood. Knew it for a cache immediately and confirmed this upon opening.
Signed and rehid a little more carefully even though this doesn't seem to be the intended GZ, very surprised this hasn't been muggled in some way or another.
Regardless, amazing walk and absolutely breathtaking piece of nature. Can't recommend enough.

Great walk through some amazing forest, we sang and marched all the way down to fend off snakes. The giant was indeed quite a feat of nature. Sadly there was no cache to be found around the area which matched the hint.

19-Nov-19
Found thanks for this we saw a snake at the way down

That's one big tree! Previous logs helped us confirm where the cache was as trusting the GPS here was not working. The hint also helped although it's suffered a little cache creep. TFTC!

What an beautiful stroll through the rainforest to this amazing tree! Thanks for placing this cache here. Definitely deserves favourite point

The track to the BFG has been greatly upgraded since this cache was first placed here. It’s now a well formed track with info boards along the way. As well as being able to access it from Gould’s Country it can also be access just south of Weldborough. We have add some photos to our logs with info about the roads in as well as the walk itself. On the map the Big Tree walk is A.
Really enjoyed this walk.
A FP from us

Doing a lap of Tassie in a campervan for 10 days. Took us a while to get it. Even with the hint as it was a bit confusing. We found at least a couple candidates for a Y shaped tree on an angle.

In the end we resorted to reading back years' worth of logs and found a necessary nugget of information in one of them. After this we soon had CIH.

Awesome place well worth a visit. Walking as the clouds were closing in at the top making it a magical experience.

On a not too cold,
but very damp Tasmanian day,
I drove down the track in the pouring rain.
Geomobile abandoned,
I headed off in me big blue raincoat,
to find the big blue giant Razz

And almost immediately I was surrounded by the beauty of the unspoilt,
Tassie wilderness.
Or a least a scrap of it Razz

It's dark in here !! [:o]
And I brushed through the ferns,
past the little myrtle trees,
and on down the hill to the bridge over the water race.
From there the walk gets really spectacular as the trees get bigger and bigger !! [:o]

It took a while to stroll the last bit of this walk Razz
I spent way too long looking up,
and getting a face full of water Red Face

Eventually I arrived at the BFG.
Well OMG !! Smile
So I headed on inside to get out of the rain for a while Big Grin
The 'logbook of memories was signed and a few entries read'
Mostly ooky sooky syrupy sweet stuff !! [xx(]

Time to head out for a cache find Razz
Which wasn't too difficult with a clue to paw [^]

TFTC and a great walk in the wet !!

Back at the geomobile,
all that was left to do was pick off the leeches that had hitch hiked Razz
Gotta love leeches [:X]

The BTG or BFG was a must do today, probably on even par with a visit to St Columba Falls. Thankfully both have caches as an added bonus. Enjoyed the walk in through the tree ferns and these spectacular giants. The cache itself proved a challenge to find and only with the assistance of the hint. Exceptional experience.. thanks..!!

What a great area to come and explore. When we arrived at GZ five others were admiring The BFG.
We really wanted to get this cache before leaving so we explained geocaching to them. They were very interested and a little amused when I told them that they were muggles. Maybe a new caching team may start.
Thanks aloysius7 for showing us this area and the cache.

Using all our heroism we signed the logbook, while we were attacked by leeches!
Very impressive tree! Thanks for showing and for building the new path!

This is now an amazing great walk in. We were pressed for time so we just went to the BFG and back. Such a special place and I'm glad its still here.

Spending the New Year in Hobart and the rest of our vacation camping and traveling around Tassi. We had a great time in this beautiful country exploring a lot of nature, food, geocaches and friendly faces.
Searched high and low to make the find just when my muggle started to scream. Attack of the small leeches. Replaced it quickly to run off. At the parking lot I discovered that one leech got me too. Huge amount off blood was lost for this geocache Big Grin. TFTC

Cache was found sat on bench so have hidden where we think it should be according to the hint

12-Feb-16
Not surprised there have been a few DNFs with this one. The co-ordinates are way off. We searched long and hard at the published co-ords with no luck and gave up. We then went back to the big tree and noticed something that exactly matched the hint - even though we were over 65 metres away from the co-ords. Very surprised when we found the cache here.

Because we were so far away from the co-ords (according to my Garmin GPS), I then used the app on my Galaxy S5 to see if something had gone awry - that too also showed we were 65 metres from the co-ords.

Don't know if the cache has been moved since it was first published, but the owner needs to check the co-ords. For future searchers, ignore what the GPS says, just go to the main "feature" and follow the hint.

Searched the area, but sadly a DNF for us here today. found a likely spot that matched all the logs including the encrypted hint from Tardis.

Seems this one has gone walkies. [:(!]

Awful long walk with no smilie. Big tree and pretty area though.

Pretty sure this one is missing have photo of likely hidey hole. Twisted

Another amazingly big tree!

17-Dec-14
Sad Did not find
I think we went on the wrong track which was also marked with pink tape. The track got very over grown at parts with ferns and lots of fallen trees and no GPS signal didn't help. Sad
Will have to try again another time and find a couple of other caches in the area.

13-Jul-14
What a ripper of a walk!! Absolutely magnificent rainforest. We'll bring along "foreign" visitors from the big island for a show & tell. Well more of a "show" as the "tell" is unnecessary. Fav point for sure. Don't skip this one when you're in the area.

Things have clearly changed since this cache was published. Ignore references to pink tape (strangely this was the second time we'd had to do that today - refer to GCHHDH). You can ignore references to "steep & slippery" in the description too as the Friends of the Blue Tier have put in an excellent well graded, expertly benched track complete with blue chip surfacing for a pleasant stroll all the way to the big tree where a large rustic bench seat awaits your repose. Similarly ignore references to the same that you may see on an unofficial sign at the start of the walk. Trust us. The terrain is more of a 2-2.5 now, albeit a little uphill on return. We were particularly impressed with the motar-free, concrete-free rock archwork over the drainage culvert - a dying art. We completed the return walk in well under an hour, including dawdling to admire vegetation & wildlife, cache hunting, ogling of impressively sized tree etc.

As for road access, that too appears to have changed over the years as we drove the Lottah Rd all the way from the Tasman Hwy at Goulds Country T/O back to the Hwy at Weldborough Pass without a problem (though slowly to avoid the numerous potholes). Entering from the T/O at the pass (near the lookout & GCMTQN) would certainly be quicker. As others have noted, turn again at the quarry - where all those blue chips no doubt originated.

We took note of previous warnings regarding GZ's rubbery figures. The hint is still valid though we may add: Gnxr n frng, ybbx bire gb lbhe evtug naq lbh ner ybbxvat fgenvtug ng vg, gjb fgrcf njnl. No need to trample the undergrowth.

I found this one eight years ago, long before I got involved in this game. I am now back to log my find!
This is a wonderful forest and a beautiful tree that is in danger of being logged. Don't let it happen. Support the Friends of the Blue Tier and get this area saved for future generations to enjoy. New trail makes this a beautiful walk and definately worth the visit.
Found the cache exposed and wet. Gave it a clean and dry, added new log book. Replaced and hidden again.

Found this with President and the First Lady.

Set off at 4pm at a great pace, and was back at the car at 5.10pm.

Seems a lot of work going on in the forest with the track seeing a lot of work.

Big Tree was about 60m from given GZ - but was pretty hard to miss. The plaque on it was the dead giveaway of the right tree. Very impressive, well worth the walk in.

Thanks

What a great cache. We found this one with Cached late in the afternoon with failing light but thankfully the pink ribbons got us there and back. The tree was amazing and the cache hint spot on. This was a quality caching experience that we will treasure. TNLN TFTC

Gotcha !!! But what an effort. An error in Navigation saw us walking along a different track marked with pink tape and on the wrong side of the valley, the closest we got was 580m . Spent 2 Hrs. there then as we were driving out to the Hwy noticed another road we'd not seen. Then it all became clear. At last we found the start of the track to BTG . Being silly Q'landers we thought this won't take long so we won't bother with our wet weather gear. Arriving near GZ the search was on . Found a big tree and everything fitted ( about 60m before GZ ) but no cache and it started to pour. Sheltered in the tree. Finally decided to make a run for it and log a DNF, BUT...A short distance back and we discovered the real BFG. Sheltered from the downpour in the tre and took the required NW bearing and what do you know we spied the cache from inside the tree. A quick dash to grab it and bring it back to the shelter of the tree to sign and date. Next, still in the rain we returned the cache to it's hiding place then struggled up the slippery hill to the geomobile . Arrived thoroughly wet through and very cold. Stripped our wet gear on the side of the road then into the camper for a hot shower and a change of clothes ,then a hot cup of tea. A great cache. All the problems were self inflicted. A favourite from me. Visited TB's and GC's ..TFTC

This cache caught our eyes some time ago, but we don't pass this way that often, so we sort of forgot about it . . .until we were spending a few days in the area and it popped up! We came invia the route suggested in the cache description (ignoring our garmin, which was trying to send us down a non-existent road!). We found the turnof and parking area without any trouble and took to the bush. What an amazing area. It was a geat place to visit, but don't think that we would have liked to have worked here! We were particulsrly amazed by the 'highway' type walking path along the water race. Having read previous logs, we were on the look out for the large tree, so managed not to walk past it. Thecache was a little damp and growing some nice white mould. We couldn't really dry it, but left a ziplock bag (mind you, that might mean tht it can't dry out either . . .) T marbles and rusty lighter L frog bracelet. Thans for a great walk.

Our first cache of the day. We'd been told about this tree by a local at the pub last night but didn't understand the directions so when Mr. Herbz spotted the cache on the GPSr we set off straight away. We arrived coming in from the opposite direction but after some deliberation found the entrance to the path. A lovely walk to an awesome tree. TFTC

We approach this cache from the Scottsdale end, turning off the Tasman Highway onto Lottah Road. Approximately 1.5km along the road there is a quarry (on the left) and a road turning off to the south-east (approx) - although not sign posted, this is Lehners Ridge Road which we followed to the parking coordinates provided. This approach avoids any possible conflict with the locals - we noticed that the eastern end of Lehners Ridge Road had a closed gate across the public road! It was a very enjoyable walk into GZ through a magnificent forest. Some sections were a little steep and slightly slippery in thr dry - we expect that it could be very slippery if wet. As we neared GZ we came across numerous very large trees - magnificent trees. Given the comments of previous finders we found the very large tree about 60m before GZ and the cache was very quickly in hand. This was a wonderful walk, especially on Australia Day. The walk (there and back) took us 65 minutes including about 15 minutes examing the big trees (a sign at the beginning of the walk sats 2 hours return). TFTC aloysius7

Found on our North East caravan and caching weekend, we enjoyed the walk that much that we actually walked past the tree and had to come back. Tip - the pink tape continues on past the cache site, which is 70 metres out. Mighty impressive trees and the biggest man ferns we have ever seen. Thanks for bringing us here we feel very lucky to have visited this amazing area.

!WOW!

I hope that sums up how we all felt on this cache. Thanks for brining us somewhere we wouldn't have otherwise come on the Troublesome Tassie Tour.

#612 @ 12.35pm. On our Tassie Caching Adventure with DazzPete. Well THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU for bringing us to this fabulous location which wasn't without its fair share of hiccups. We followed the cache notes for the suggested parking area so headed toward Lehners Ridge Road. When we got there it looked to be a driveway, however we followed it up to the nearby house when we were stopped by the "lady of the house". She advised that this was a private road but we advised her that all our GPS's (Garmin, Magellan & VMS) all suggested that the road was public access. Thankfully she relented and let us continue on (just this once) as she wants to discourage others headed in the same direction. We soon were able to locate the parking area across from the entrance to the BFG (the "lady of the house" was under the impression that loggers had removed the pink tape trail as they want to discourage vistors to the area). Well we are happy to report that the pink tape trail is alive and well and we were able to find our way to the POI. Thankfully, with the hint employed, DazzPete were able to locate the cache - the actual co-ords take you close to another big tree further afield.

Was umming and aahing about going to get this one, had to be in St. Helens by lunch time and wasn't sure about the walk and drive in. Decided I'd be annoyed at myself after the fact if I didn't and now I'm very pleased that I did.
Walk in is excellent fun and The BFG and his siblings at GZ are very impressive.
Quite a few humorous logs from non-cachers of the getting nude or getting stoned variety and a few more impassioned pleas to save the trees. Was also impressed by the 'fight climate change' sign along the water race, not sure why the placers felt the need to carry it half way along the track - surely they could have placed it at the start and just as many people would see it!
Great cache, glad I made the effort.

08-Sep-09
Amazing forest and a great little hike in the rain today. The tree is pretty impressive, even for someone who is used to the trees in Oregon.

My GPS was telling me the GZ was about 70m away when I was standing next to the tree. I almost thought there must be another big tree with a hole nearby!
Reception was not very good, but i found the box at the location described in the hint, at these coordinates.

Great walk down to the tree, good description of the track and a good hint which without would make it hard to find.
Don't believe it is the fattest tree as I have seen much bigger than that in Tasmania.
Thanks aloysius7

What a fantastic walk, looked like dinosaur country.Track had new looking pink tape, well marked. There are some huge

The start of the track was not marked, but proved to be in the only place we could park and check our bearings anyway. A good walk, providing one doesn't mind the odd spider web in one's face. Curiously, our GPSr showed we had another 90m to go, but we were so obviously in the right place. Many muggles have found the cache and have written messages in the log book. Took bruce the shark, left smiley stamper. Thanks for the walk Aloysius.

It's been awhile since I did this cache, I didn't log it at first because it turned out to be quite an adventure, and when I wrote up the log it was way too long (and still is!), so I thought I'd wait and try to tell the story a little quicker. Then a house move got in the way, then procrastination reared it's ugly head, etc. etc. etc. So I'll post this for now to keep the owner happy - although I'm sure he'd be happier to have the long(er) version here!

Is it possible to get lost whist Geocaching? Can it be potentially life threatening? I guess the answer would have to be yes, and I proved it today - and it was all my fault Sad

A combination of doing this cache when I hadn't really planned to, and taking a dog along that really isn't suited to bushwalking resulted in a very interesting afternoon for my little buddy GeoSnort and myself. Numerous other errors of judgement on my part meant there was more than one occasion when I thought I was well and truly lost. What should have taken 35 minutes each way, ended up taking us 4 and a half to 5 hours. We were leeched, I have scars still from cuts when I fell into a rotten tree stump, and despite his lack of long term memory, I'm sure GeoSnort still has this day etched firmly in the back of his head.

So the log is still long, I've told you nothing of what happened, you'll just haave to ask me to fill you in on the finer details at the next event Smile

Did we enjoy ourselves? I certainly did, and I'd love to do the walk again to see what it's like when you're not stressing that your little mate is about to expire from exhaustion.

Took nothing, left Bruce the Shark torch. Learned a lot!!
