Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station and photograph the GZ.

Official Code: PM90203
Official Name: Kingscliff Baseline PM90203

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

Trig points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance, elevation, and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps. The series of "Kingscliff Baseline PM" 'trigs' is for the training of surveyors, and calibration (if need be) of their 'equipments'. This series seems unique, in that the trig pillars are not a regular distance apart, with some hundreds of metres apart, with another very close. These work in the exactly the same manner as any other NSW concrete trig pillar (where the measurement device is mounted with the three screws, on top of the pillar).

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private  property, and permission to photograph it is not forthcoming, or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably.

Access: Just a nice beach-side walk is required to find the SEVEN (x 7) similar trigs - NO VEHICLES allowed beside the trigs

Kingscliff was a nice point in the middle of our drive up to Brissie for Iron Maiden, and the baseline set of trigs points cemented it as our town of choice for a lunch stop.

Left the car and went for a quick wander up and down the line, collecting photos as we went.

Soph out loud and I are on a bit of a road trip on our way to Lennox Head for a conference, it gave us an excuse to have a mini holiday and take a few days to get there. So for us that always means finding caches and trigs on our travels. This trip so far has been great as we have had the chance to visit a bunch of beautiful Northern New South Wales Beach towns. Being the off season they have been pretty quiet and even though it is June, much warmer than at home in the Hawkesbury. We have been spending a time travelling slowly between a bunch of beach towns we have not spent time in along the New South Wales North Coast and it has been quite a treat. we stopped in Kings cliff for some lunch and saw this base line was close by and who can resist getting 7 trigs in such a small area. it was really great to see these were all so well cared for and still had all their relevant name plates etc

We were shattered when we discovered our GPS query fell short of these trigs when visiting on Wednesday, we probably could have followed our noses to them, but were short on time anyway, a query adjustment and we were good-to-go for today. Today we grabbed them north to south on our way back from Fingal Head.... testlines are always fun...

Thanks for the cache Smile

The seven Baseline Trigs all look the same. TP7253 Kingscliff Baseline PM90201 shows I’m at this location. I’ve added the remaining six Trig images in a collage with the log for TP7254 Kingscliff Baseline PM90202. This is my third Baseline Trig find of the day out of seven. They are all close together. No interesting story with these finds so here’s some random information about 3

To split an angle into 3 equal parts is to trisect it. If you trisect an angle at each corner of any triangle, the trisectors intersect and form a triangle with 3 equal sides. This is Morley’s Theorem.

No3 with even more gizmo on the top... but by now, with the trigs so close together, we got to know what this was about.

On the many occasions that I have driven to Kingscliff I have wondered what these sentinels were. Now I know that they are trig points, but what is baseline. I have never seen so many trig points like this and with 6 of them in a straight row. Today, it would appears that surveying work is being carried out as the top hat cylinders were all removed and surveyors reflectors were on top of most of them.

#GA2731 - 09:43; Day five of the 2018 Oz GeoMuster mission with Sol de lune. After a night in Ballina, the plan for today was to cache northward through Ballina to Byron Bay and then on to Kingscliff before turning south for home through Bangalow, Evans Head, New Italy, Yamba, Maclean and on to Kempsey for another overnight stay. After an early start, we hadn't gone far up the road when we saw evidence of a heavy shower not too long before we got there, so we seem to have dodged a bullet and got packed up with fairly dry gear. Following a successful run through to Cape Byron, we continued our journey along some interesting and at times rather rough roads before getting to the highway and on to Brunswick Heads. After our visit there, it was back down to the highway and on to Kingscliff so I could grab this testline (yes, another one!), which Sdl had picked up on a previous visit. I took detour from the testline to grab a GC cache and picked up a bag of moveables which were sitting nearby, but now back on track for the fifth of the seven trigs in this testline today. Earlier this morning we were in Kingscliffe and we visited all the trig points in the Kingscliff Baseline. Two photos have been added to the Gallery for this cache: the identification plate; and Mrs y'stassie standing next to the trig point. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Baseline trig five. We had a bit of a photo failure here. Tried to set up a nice photo with Samboo but the wind was a bit of a problem, two photos are me trying to support him, but the following two which should include the trig info are just blank. Rolling Eyes

The area to the back of this trig has been fenced off, apparently there are a pair of stone curlews nesting here.

Saw PM90205 trig first of all, and then realised there was a 'Testline' / Baseline series of trigs, so went 'to work' and took photos of each one, from #7 to #1.
*FTF* @ 1025, and a Merry Christmas (I had just returned from 3 weeks in Thailand)
