Description
Historical Collins Street Travel back in time along Collins Street which is a major street in the centre of Melbourne. Collins Street is known for its grand Victorian architecture, prestigious boutiques and high-end retailers. Collins Street has served as Melbourne's traditional main street since 1837 and was laid out as a core feature of the Hoddle Grid laid out in 1837. The eastern end of Collins Street is known colloquially as the "Paris End" due to its numerous heritage buildings, shopping boutiques and alfresco dining culture, features immortalised as part of the "Marvellous Melbourne" 1850s gold rush period. The western end of the street is increasingly referred to as the 'New York End' due its modern glass skyscrapers and history as the financial heart of Melbourne, home to various banks and insurance companies but that it part of the tour that is yet to come. Collins Street was named after Lieutenant-Governor David Collins. This tour will guide you from Swanston Street at the Melbourne Town hall up or down depending on your viewpoint crossing the street at various points to number 1 Collins Street and a little beyond. This tour will reveal to you the various architecture and historical markers that abound in our town of 4 million people. Check out Saint Michaels Uniting Church, Scots' Church and Assembly Hall, The Athenaeum Building, The Town Hall Foundation Stone, Harley House, Melville House and many more to St Peter's Anglican Church in East Melbourne. All of the geocaches in this tour are History caches so bring your pen, some paper and your reading glasses as you discover trivial details of the landmarks that you will stop at. The tour might take an hour two and can be all completed on foot. A small climb from Swanston Street towards Spring Street should pose no problems for anyone, small children included. There are places along the way that you can stop for a coffee, soft drink or snacks and if you are so inclined some very expensive handbags and watches. I hope you enjoy the tour of eastern part of Collins Street and hope you’ll keep a look out for the western tour coming soon.
