Description

Stringy

1 sneaky waypoint... a short walk and... you're there...

Depending on the time of day you choose, this could be an extreme urban cache or a pleasant bushland cache

Cache Information

  • Waypoint is small...
  • The cache is a clear blue container full of goodies...
  • There may be watchers at most locations - So try not to look too suspicious...

Family Information

A fairly kid friendly cache, but don't let them run ahead if very young... Nothing fatal, but they may get wet and/or have a nasty fall...

Nearby, there's a park with a kiddies playground, picnic tables & wood barbecues in case some family members want to opt out of the hunt, or you want to have further fun afterwards...

Environmental Statement

N.B. All of the waypoints & the cache can be reached and retrieved without taking one step off the established trails.... SO PLEASE DON'T squish any vegetation in the hunt for this cache.

With WP1 missing we'll archive this cache to stop it turning up in the search lists. If the cache owner like, they can resurrect the listing by placing an unarchived log against it.

I had a crack at this one while in the area with Sol de lune today. We couldn't find WP1, so will keep an eye out for a future visit perhaps. We did manage to collect a nearby moveable on the way through, so all was not lost Wink

It might for Zal......but not for us. Live that is!

In town with LuckyL10n and decided to try this one, but alas it was a no go. Between the mozzies, the barking dog and then the local resident who came down to see what we were doing, we decided to give it a miss after about 10 minutes searching. With almost 3 years since it was last found, I was expecting the WP to be a little difficult, but with everything going on, we just decided to leave it and try another day...

Thanks anyway.

IT LIVES!!!!!!! Dancing

I was driving home from a long meeting and saw the Stringy Creek Sign which tipped off a memory of a GCA cache Id been meaning to have a crack at for a long time. Pulled over and found I was in the perfect place for a go! 87 weeks since the last find... hmm this could be interesting.

...and it was after about 20 minutes I was convinced I would have to evict a possum from a hiding hole I peered into and saw the fuzzy fellow peering right back at me. However, before getting nasty on him I gave Richary a quick text who told me it would have to be a very small Possum to be where I should be looking Wink

That helped, I went back to another possibility and poked and scratched and prodded and....YES there it was, buried in 18 months of crap and would have remained unfound without my concentrated efforts thanks to Rich's hint. The good news is the direction is fine, you dont have to leave the track, and the next hunter should have a much easier time of it now it has been uncovered a bit. The waypoint was full of water, but holding up very well and legible.

Next I hid a few BINGO moveables nearby and headed to GZ. It was VERY hot and after 30 or 40 minutes I was about to resort to Richary again as the GPS was all over the shop. I dont know if things have changed a lot in the past 10 years... but the cache is definitely NOT anywhere reachable without leaving the track. I had been sticking to the walkway as much as possible, but when I got frustraited and headed off to a likely looking place the arrow was pointing to(it wasnt there) it drew me even further off track until I had the Eureka moment! Dancing

During my mini celebration I felt eyes... and sure enough, a neighbour was staring down at me from her balcony intently. I waved and said hello and explained nothing nefarious was going on (and not too expect too many visitors) Wink Luckily she had heard of caching, having found one by accident one time, and promised not to tell anyone Smile

Relieved, but very hot and dry, it was back to the car and home, triumphant! Very Happy

Couldn't find the waypoint. Sad

Well, I was in the ares driving to another cache and with the traffic this morning, I stopped off for a GCA multi.

Easy walk to WP1, but then the searching started. Was it around the good camo lined fence? Was it in amoungst the folage? Was it in the... Well let's just say that after 5 min of searching I was about to give up before I checked ONE more place and there the WP revealed itself, 13m out by my GPS. Nice camo and container too!

Then I walked on to gz and still with the trees above me the gps didn't want to stay still. I checked a few places and sure enough the cache came into view. SL. TNLN and replaced. Gps was 7m out on this one.

Nice multi, I like it. Clapping TFTC.

Over a year since this was last found - what a shame - it's a great cache. WP1 gave me great trouble. Twice I searched and failed to find because my attention was drawn to an unusual place that looked like a great hide. In the end, a hint from Hunter-Finder had WP1 in hand. I poured a c.c. of water out of it, but it is in very good condition. The cache itself took a bit of finding, and what a great place although you feel insecure about the possibility of being muggled. Cache in fine condition. TNLN SL TFTC.

254 - Nothing like a cache that is practically in my backyard! Found WP1 some time ago on a rainy day and so had GPSr difficulties... Returned today and after some searching located GZ. Lovely area. TFTC

After being laid up for 3 weeks I decided today was a good day for a walk. So, armed with the co-ords from WP1 I went in search of the cache. I'm definitely going to look for a new GPS as the trees played havoc with mine. However, using common sense and a compass I soon located a well hidden cache.
Thanks to Leek for this lovely place and to richary for renewing WP1.

Waypoint 1 has been relaminated and rehidden in a nice black plastic container, so this is all good to go again.

After picking up some of the new traditionals that have started to appear in Chatswood, it was time to return to one of my nemesis caches. Found WP1 after a bit of a hunt but retrieving it was a problem, it had retreated a bit further into it's hidey hole than I suspect was intended. Eventually got it out with the help of some sticks. It's a bit soggy and getting a bit hard to read so might need some TLC. Anyway, onto GZ to fairly quickly find the well stocked prize being guarded by a very large orb spider with a complicated web system which made retrieval a bit interesting.

TNLNSL, a lovely little creek with a bit of history to stroll along. Thanks Leek.

Had a go at this one but couldn't find the first WP. Everything was wet from the rains and I didn't want to search through the vegetation, I'll try again in drier weather.

It's a nice creek, I enjoyed the walk along it.

What is it about GA Caches, that they are so infrequently visited? This is a top Cache and I thoroughly enjoyed it. WP1 is a tricky hide and the GPS reception was pretty poor, but I eventually won out. The Cache itself is a very easy find. Thanks for showing me a wonderful piece of urban bush.

After no caching for ages due to work, a cache that had been broken for ages seemed a good way to start. Had trouble with the 1st waypoint until I reread the description, which forced me to reevaluate my location and the waypoint cache was soon to hand. The cache was quickly found after a walk through a lovely park, along side a creek.

Met up with Leek this morning, as a big kids' party was going on nearby. As we worked past the waypoints and to the cache, we discussed caching past and present. It was great to meet something I've read about for many years.

I helped Leek confirm the positions of the waypoint and the cache, signed the log and grabbed the TB. Where did I drop it off today? Moo Ha Ha Ha.

Big thanks to Leek. Great to meet you.

Visited this cache today with Spindoc Bob and his GPS...
Waypoint 1 had indeed gone missing (again), so I have changed the coordinates for this cache to lead you to the next waypoint... Only one waypoint now and then the final cache...
We did notice that the first waypoint is a little damp, so if someone could replace the paper on the next visit, I would be much obliged...

P.S. Spindoc Bob has nabbed the Earth travel bug... I'm sure it'll turn up again soon in another cache near you...

This cache has been unavailable for 2 years now and due to an unretrievable TB within also prevents the ability to find "The Fifth Element Cache".
It needs archiving.

No luck contacting Leek on this one. Perhaps a previous finder could post co-ordinates for WP2.

08-Sep-06
Leek if you still need help fixing this one. Please contact me through the GCA forum or GC.com. I'd be happy to help you fix it.

16-Jul-06
Didn't expect to find it but was only driving 100m away so decided to have a look anyway.

Sent an email about helping to fix it.

23-May-06
I've already offered by e-mail to ensign99 to meet him/her at Stringy to repair / confirm the cache - same applies to anyone else...

My problem is that my GPS is not working at the moment, so it would be a little difficult for me to fix Stringy up... I just need someone with a working GPS and we'll get the show back on the road...

I can only meet at Stringy at a weekend... Send me an e-mail and give me a couple of days notice...

Spent 45 minutes trying to find WP1, is it still there? From the Log it has been 18 months since the last successful search. Will be back again as it is a very short stroll from home but would be nice to know that the WPs and Cache are still there.

24-Feb-06
Was unable to find WP1 today. Spent about 30 minutes looking, but with all the leaf litter and constant attacks by mozzies I left defeated. I'll be back to try this one another time, perhaps after a heavy rain clears the area up a little.

16-Jan-06
Found our way to the area Leek, but for the life of us could not find WP1. We gave up and decided to do Grumpy with success. After WP2 at Grumpy we now know how tricky you can be so we'll be back for Stringy and that drink you offer.

04-Dec-05
WP1 had a few kid's playing around in the creek, will be back some other day, hopefully the cache was hidden before this board walk was installed.

Dropped off Earth TB

Found this one on my second attempt. Volunteer Bush regeneration muggles at GZ thwarted my first attempt on this one. Missleah joined me on my second attempt. TNLN

Thanks for a nice stoll through the bush. Did this with Shaggy on his second attempt. TNLN.

Well, we successfully negotiated our first multi cache! We were sprung by a very local local at WP1 and saw a lorikeet pop into its nest near WP2. We didn't see a possum we released a year or so ago, which is probably not surprising given that it was nowhere near dusk.

Nicely done. WP2 had the GPS going around in circles, but it showed up eventually. Thanks again Leek.

20-Mar-04
We have not been out caching for a while, so what better way to get back into it with a Leek cache. Stringy was very well done - clever hiding places for first 2 waypoints and classic Leek hiding place for the final cache.

Good to talk to you Leek, look forward to catching up in the field one day. Left Torch, took nothing.

Thanks
BJF

Now this is my idea of a multicache! Waypoints all within a short walk and easy to find! Nice one Leek! Shame you couldn't join BJF and I for a beer....maybe next time! Hope the BBQ was fun! MRG

Now this is a bit of a worry: a set of clever and cheeky Leek caches that took us less then 5 minutes each to find! We wonder, could it be that we are taking on some the features of a Welsh vegetable? What's this, ye Gods, the palms of the hands are starting to turn green...wait, the voice is turning deep baritone...some of the squires have formed themselves into a choir and are starting to take an unhealthy interest in rugby. Oh no, all we can hope is that it is only a passing phenomena and before too long Leek's caches will once again start taking at least 40 minutes of head-scratching, eye-squintingly sweet agony before being found (if at all). That said, we found this cache a fine adventure in the rain and retrieved the Steggy TB as well as an Air Element bug. Not sure what to about this, will search the screens for guidance. Also took a cockroach and left a .45 calibre pencil sharpener.
Thanks again Leek, o wizard of the waypoints.

Dropped off the Steggy TB and the Air TB for the fifth element geocache. Go free little fella's!

26-Jan-04
After a tip off from the Leek Master himself, I decided to nail this recently reactivated cache and be the first to find it after almost 12 months. WP1 was fiendishly cleaver in it's simplicity. WP2 was just... well, fiendish! However the final stash revieled itself to me without any any trouble at all. Took the micro pegs and left a mouse trap.

Thanks for a walk through a nice piece of Lane Cove, Leek! Top work!

24-Jan-04
Thought it was about time that I pulled my finger out and reactivated this cache... Replaced WP1 and checked WP2 & final cache today and all are well...
N.B. The coordinates for waypoint 1 have changed, so please make sure that you have a recently downloaded set of coordinates in your GPS.

12-Jul-03
Checked this cache from end to end today... WP1 is still intact, WP3 and final cache are there as well, but some over zealous bush-care person has removed WP2... I will repair this WP as soon as possible. In the meantime, the cache is inactive.

27-Jun-03
Checked the main cache site today and it was still in good order... WP1 is unlikely to have disappeared, but I'll try to check that and the other WPs tomorrow...

10-Jun-03
No luck. After sorting out a few problems with Maj (the upside down GPSr) who was trying to tell me that Wollongong was North of my position, I found a perfect hidey hole for a micro-cache at waypoint 1 to give me the next co-ords. But, alas, alack, narry a skerrick to be found. Is is possible methinks, that the instructions have been cache-napped? Will await updates with anticipation.

15-Feb-03
Team Phanargh re attempted this today with the added help of some clever members to do all the hard searching.
It was hot.
The mosquitos were big and hungry.
The satelites were hiding indoors were it was cooler.
We had a great time with this one, thanks Leek.

21-Jan-03
Found by Mary & David at 1605. Nearly gave up on this at waypoint 2, where the satellites were still against us and we could only localise the waypoint to about a 25m stretch of the track. A check with the Leek Hintline resulted in a narrowing of the possibilities down to a more manageable span, and some five minutes later we were on our way again. Luckily there was no one else about to disturb our efforts. The next waypoint revealed itself much more readily, although again the satellites didn't help much. The cache itself was almost an anti-climax, and we took a candle, left a surfing Snoopy figurine just for Miss Leek. Thanks to Leek for the hint, for the picturesque walk, and also for the warning that the next cache on our list was off-line.

31-Dec-02
At last the Ginger Loon can check this one off his list. After 3 attempts at WP1 on three different occasions I returned today to the scene of the crime, determined to finish this one off. WP2 was giving me trouble with the amount of traffic along the path. With all the heightened awareness for strange behavour (not to mention the anti-geocaching campaign run by the media at the moment) I thought I might go for a little walk down the path to check things out. Not long after I stumbled across WP3 (well how about that). Not long after that but after a bit of triangulation I had the cache in my hands.
Swapped a mobile phone (toy) for an icing kit.
Thanks Leek for an at times frustrating but nonetheless enjoyable caching experience.

11-Dec-02
We arrived at waypoint 1 and set about scaring the locals away. Mission accomplished (easily), we followed the mosquitoes to waypoints 2 through 28 and tripped over the cache. Final cache was quite exposed (visible from over 10m) so we added a little extra camouflage.

06-Dec-02
SwampGecko omitted to mention that he found a Country Road cap sitting right on top of the cache!!!, so if it was yours, go back & claim it...

My 3rd cache for the weekend.

1st waypoint had me scratching my head for a bit (as well as scratching around in the dirt), as I'd not come across that kind of WP before. Very sneaky. Smile

The remaining WPs were more successful. I met Urban Bear between WP2 and 3. I might be crazy, but I'm sure he said the next WP (3) was the cache, and that threw me a bit as I was looking for something more sizeable. I'm slowly learning to assume nothing in this game Smile

Leek sprang (excuse the pun) apon me between WP3 and 4. I was expecting him to be back at WP1 or coming from that direction, so it was a bit of a shock when this relative stranger walked up to me from another direction and said Hi Roger. Found the cache (unassisted of course), swapped a red stress ball for a blue stress ball (keeping balance in the universe).

On my way out I saw 2 people with a tell tale yellow eTrex at WP1. Eco Team!!! Had a great chat about all sorts of gc stuff and took a couple of photos.

'twas great meeting you all!

14-Sep-02
It was great to meet a couple of fellow geocachers today... I met Urban Bear at the first waypoint and he told me that MindSocket was on the trail... I took a short-cut to the location of the final cache and surprised MindSocket who was well on his way there...

I went to the cache today and took some (hopefully) more accurate measurements. I have updated all waypoint markers...
Well done to ScubaDoo, AlternateRoute & FraggleRock for finding the cache with the coords provided initially...
