Description

Grumpy

A fairly straightforward multi-cache on the banks of Lane Cove River.

Cache Information

  • This cache forms part of Bear_Left's Snow White & the Seven Dwarves Series. It contains a clue card for the Grumpy dwarf in the log-book zip-loc bag and this will help to lead you to the final cache in the series: Bear_Left's "Happily Ever After" cache.
  • The Grumpy cache is a 5 litre plastic container and initially contained some music CDs and a few other goodies...

Cache Instructions

  • At WP1, you will find a five digit number. Add the first 2 digits of the number together and subtract the result from the decimals of the WP1 Easting to get the Easting for WP2 (The WP2 Southing is the same as for WP1). e.g. If the sum of the first 2 digits was 5, you should subtract .005 from the .135 in the East coordinate.
Once you've found WP2, it should be plain sailing...
  • Take the high road or the low road - both should get you to the cache... The low road is probably nicer though...

Location Information

  • There is a well-defined track to the cache although the ground may be a bit muddy and slippery after heavy rain
  • According to signs in the area: "The park contains estuarine vegetation of Swamp She-Oaks, Mangroves and rushes combined with Sydney Sandstone gully forests of Black Butt, Red Gum & Red Bloodwood"

Out with Baby J Man

I'm doing HEA in reverse order - having triangulated the final

WP1 is close to the GC cache Sticks and Stones, so thought it appropriate to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Found WP1 easily and like others had a lot of trouble with WP2. GPS was pointing us towards a fairly overgrown area and more interestingly previous comments had indicated that the clue was an "old style hide". Regardless turns out we didn't need to be looking in the overgrown area and on a final look I spotted what we needed in a spot Baby J Man had overlooked.

With coords in hand headed out to the final where cache was easily found, a bit exposed if anything but realistically no problem. Looks like a muggle may have found it but replaced, signed log - first in a while but pleased to say everything here is in order.

Thanks Leek!

Started the day with sad news about EDF and spent some time collecting 3 of his caches around East Ryde. Having woken up Sleepy earlier in the week, I recall seeing Grumpy was much closer to home. So while in the area, decided to head to some familiar tracks. Found the numbers at WP1 quickly and did the complex maths to identify WP2. A workman in a large truck was parked in the turning circle so I was hoping I wouldn't attract his attention. For WP2, the iPhone had me in no-mans land. I initially inspected an object about 3m away but then something took me the other way and I surprised myself with a quick find of the clue. Off to GZ taking the lower road. Signed log and noted clue. Cache and contents in good order. Nice to find a decent size container.

That took a while to work out what I was supposed to do to get the find. Came up here after work to get "No one here gets out alive, now" and if there only was time for a couple of more caches then this had to be one of them. Parked near WP1 where there was an easy find of the details I needed and plugged the co-ordinates for WP2 got there and saw a sign and decided to take the low road and enjoyed my walk around and back to the car again. Let's check what I missed in the cache details, saw something in the logs that I had missed and went back to WP2 and found what I really needed for final coords. This time as the light was fading grabbed my head torch out of the car and went down the low road again. Watching both the path, to make sure there were no rocks or logs to trip me up, & the numbers counting down as I was following the path to GZ.
Getting close to GZ and the sun had set already so getting dark around, I looking around to see if I could see any likely hides nearby I spotted somewhere to check and as I was getting close I saw the cache, signed the log got the info for HEA and replaced but pushed back a bit more out of sight.
Thanks for the cache and keeping it going for such a long time Leek

I was in the area with Canary to do a multi cache called Sticks & Stones. We had no luck on that but Canary suggested I do this cache while we were in the area. I've done at least three or four other caches in this series over the years, so it seemed a good opportunity to do one of the few remaining of the series. Thanks

Finding this was an unbelievable stroke of luck for me. I got the coordinates for WP2 easy enough but couldn't find anything useful. I gave up and moved onto Sticks and Stones which I also inevitably had trouble with. I decided to walk the loop around along the river, giving upon both these caches when a water dragon sunning on a rock caught my eye. I inched close to get a photo and saw the corner of a cache in my peripheral vision. Found it to be this one. Thanks, it sure was an interesting experience.

I have found a few caches along the banks of the Lane Cove River and have always enjoyed the experience, so when I stumbled upon this listing I immediately put it on my must-do list and today I had the opportunity to find it.

Finding WP1 was straightforward but locating WP2 was posing a challenge for my eTrex until I turned around and suddenly spotted something worth investigating. The walk to GZ via the lower track was delightful.

Thanks Leek.

6/10/13. 7:46 AM. GCA Cache #6. My second Happily Ever After find, having found Dopey yesterday. (Also on the way to a find of Bashful in the near future, having found Blue Midget). Found the numbers at WP1 very easily, but it took me a long time to get a fix on the right location of WP2, let alone finding the final coords. Once I had, I knew exactly where I'd be walking, past the Drifters WP for Sticks & Stones (which is still giving me trouble; a PAF from the CO of S&S came too late for this visit).
On I went until I arrived at GZ and saw the likely hide. A slight scramble and I had my cache, along with the clue for HEA. Thx Leek. }:)

WP1 was no problem. I overshot the mark for WP2 and gave up after searching every hidey-hole. I DNF'd and decided to do Sticks and Stones instead. There I quickly found WP2. So I gave up on Sticks and Stones and sought the dwarf instead.

I took the lower track. It's a pleasant walk but damp after overnight rain. At GZ I made a quck find (don't you love it when that happens!) and read through the old logs while the mozzies dined out on me. The cache is still in great shape. Got the clue for Happily Ever After.

Some weeks or months ago we'd found the WP when looking for Stick and Stones WP1 in the wrong place due to some incorrect entry in the GPSr. Today we went in search of Sticks and Stones and used the opportunity to look for this oldie as well.

All this time "Happily Ever After" has sat at the edge of our radius but we've never found one of the four (I think) remaining caches. Well finally today was the day. Enjoyed a lovely afternoon walk along the water and made a quick find, unlike Sticks and Stones (which we eventually found later). Got the clue and signed the log before replacing. So that's Grumpy knocked over!

Thanks!

I'd found WP1 on the way back from Sticks and Stones, many months ago, but did nothing with it until now. Took a short route in and near GZ, the GPS didn't make sense, so checked some possible spots in the opposite direction. Cache found fine but grumpy after being left to sleep for over a year. Flipped through a few past inscriptions, added my own and captured the magic words. Thanks.

Thanks to alfyboy for the help with WP2 identification.

A lovely walk and the magic words were found.

FINALLY! After finding WP1 ages ago, I had actually found WP2 and though that it was part of Stick & Stones cache nearby. Turns out, no it is Grumpy's final resting place. So with confirmantion from Team Lego men (Thanx), I continued to GZ after also getting S&S.

Came to GZ and after a quick search had CIH. Coords were 6m off, but fairly easy places to look. The walk and scenery is a bonus to getting this cache. SL TNLN and replaced. TFTC

At about 6pm I decide to try this one. WP1 was deiscovered but the darkness made WP2 impossible. We shall return.

A second attempt at this, while trying for S&S cache nearby. 2 council workers having lunch while I was there and another car stayed as well. Tricky one.

29-Apr-11
Called in here for a short while on a wet Friday lunchtime; found the 5 digit number no problem, right next to a car parked with two people sitting in it reading the paper?!? Oh well, WP2 is not far away and they'll go soon - not! How can a couple just sit reading the paper at the side of the road for so long! Anyway I won't count it as a DNF as I just had to leave without looking... feeling GRUMPY

Report: Argh well Roger and I were hunting Gnomes today so it seemed appropriate to pick up a Dwarf too Very Happy I found the 1st WP no probs then right onto the second. Here we paused once calculating GZ to start "Sticks and Stones" the GC multicache which begins at the same spot. Grabbed WP1 for that and headed off. (These are best done together!) After a fail at WP2 of S&S's but but ultimately a win in finding the cache we continued down the great bush walk to GZ where Roger made a quick find. Cache is in top condition, I noted the Grumpy Words and replaced the cache for an equally nice walk out. Now! To find those other pesky HEA Caches! Dancing

Found this one with Zalgariath, well he did all the work and I tagged along! Lovely part of the world, I had not been this way before, beautiful spot. cache is in excellent condition for its age, did the log thing and put it back in place for the next cacher.
Thanks for a great location.

29 wks and no finds, I thought I'd take a chance after work today. WP1 tick, easy...but then...spent 25 min looking for this mysterious WP2. I had time to myself until a muggle came and parked right at WP2. I sat and waited at the bench (yes checked that as well) and after 10 min he didn't leave so I did. Arggggg...I'll be back. From the logs this one sounds interesting...maybe phone a friend is the answer Wink

I went to the 10 Year Anniversary nearby at the weekend and until then I had been oblivious to the existence of GCA! So I quickly checked it out and found that there was a GCA only cache with a waypoint quite close to a waypoint of the GC cache I had recently deployed (Sticks & Stones). So had to check it out...

On my first visit WP2 eluded me. But today, with a bit more inspiration (and without resorting to the "phone a friend" I was planning), I spotted it. Very clever. The walk to the cache is very pleasant - a walk I have done many, many times, not even realising I was walking past a cache.

This was my first GCA cache.

Had tried this one before and failed to find WP2. GPS kept pointing to one spot and despite much searching had found nothing.

After Tronador's recent success decided to give it another crack so with Blossom along for assistance we took on the challenge. No sooner had we arrived then we were joined by Hunter/Finder. Great, I thought this has to help our chances of knocking this off. Blossom's GPS was not behaving but with two other GPS's both indicating we were in the vicinity of WP1 we decided the object there had to be what we were looking for.

The co-ords for WP2 were then calculated and the four of started our search. We then tried to work out what Tronador's three likely spots were and checked the area. After no results Blossom widened the search area and WP2 was soon located. Very similar hide to one we had recently done.

The walk to GZ was very pleasant. Loved the wooden seats along the way. Hunter/Finder quickly located the cache and after the usual caching duties were completed we returned to the cars.

Really enjoyed this one, recommend others give it a go.

I've been eyeing this cache for some time now and never got around to doing it. Today I saw that Tronador had found it back in January so I said to myself why not see if you can find WP1.
I arrived at WP1 to find Team Lego and blossom* there with GPS's in their hands. they had had the same idea. Together we searched for WP2 until blossom* spied it and we gathered round to get the new co-ords for GZ.
A nice walk along the river with some beautiful scenery including a new path and seats by the water. GZ approached and Team Lego and blossom* searched around the wooden path. I looked at an obvious place and went straight through the spider webs to it.

A great team effort. Well done ruffasguts4x4. Now I can look forward to the rest or the caches in the Series.

This was great fun. Team Lego Men suggested we head off after work to find a few caches so we chose this one. They'd already found WP1 but hadn't got any further last time. It turned out it was very lucky they'd already been there as my gps was about 20-30m out as we pulled up! After a walk up the street and back, my gps settled down and we worked out the co-ords for WP2. Just then, Hunter/Finder drove up with the same cache-after-work idea we'd had!!

We all searched around for a while in some likely and a few not-very-likely spots with no luck. As all our GPSrs were a bit jumpy, it was hard to be sure where to search so I started to look where my logic told me might be a good spot and there it was!

Off to GZ with the final co-ords and we had a really enjoyable walk along the river. I loved the seats placed below the huge cliffs and rocks, really great spot. We all agreed as we approched GZ and Hunter/Finder walked straight up to the cache for us. Geat fun, now I'll have to chase the other dwarfs!

This is a wonderful cache to do and takes you on a lovely walk along the Lane Cove river. I arrived at Wpt 1 and soon found the 5 digit number. Nothing too hard here. But what is it about Wpt 2? There is nothing "plain sailing" about this. For some reason the GPS jumps the place. I checked 3 possible locations and then in frustration sat down. To make matters worse an elderly muggle wanted to chat and almost sat with me and explained how a house used to be here until it burnt down and was never rebuilt. Finally wit ha gentle " Have a nice afternoon", he left. I must admit I resorted to phoning a friend for a clue of where not to look. And while on the phone more muggles. Finally I could search again in one of the three places I'd already looked. What's this? Now that's original. A very sneaky wpt and definitely not plain sailing. Hiding methods have obviously changed over the years, cause this was a first for me. Then off I went to GZ along a lovely trail by the river. I took the low road as recommended and it was great. GZ had me scrambling around in a number of spots before I found a well hidden cache in the most obvious spot. Why do I always make things harder? What a large cache too. I took the tissues to wipe up the sweat and left a water pistol. I almost forgot to take note of the clue for HEA. Soon the cache was returned and I continued on my way along this lovely trail all the way the Boggler Chandler mystery.
NOTE: The cache page now lists this as being in Lane Cove NP. This side of the river is NOT National Park. All the signs and maps list it as the Riverside walk and it is part of Mowbray Park, the signs are put there by Willoughby Council and maintained by them not NPWS. I have doubled checked with maps and the latest street directory and it too is listed as Mowbray Park.
This warning needs to be removed.

Having knocked off 2 nemesis caches already this afternoon lets see if we can get this one as well. This time found WP2 after about 5 minutes, considerably better than the hour I spent fruitlessly the first time around. Then off for a pleasant stroll to GZ where the goods were quickly in hand. Another very nice well stocked cache. TNLN, thanks Leek. *Recommended*.

Another one in this great H.E.A series done and dusted!
It's great to be back in this neck of the woods enjoying some short bushwalks while on a lunchbreak!
The 1st WP was straight forward but WP2 had me bouncing around all over the place, eventually I gave up and phoned a friend for a little help, in the end WP2 was not so hard after all just the GPS would not settle for some reason. WP3 (GZ) was tops, a really enjoyable walk alongside the rivers edge and as with the Spindoctors before me plenty of lizards darting off in all directions as I kept my eyes open for Joe blakes in the 34 degree heat. None spotted though and I was soon enjoying a break at the cache while I logged my find and read some bits from those that have come before me, nothing taken except a photo of that so important hint. Thanks Leek for bringing me back to a great area and a beaut hide now well and truly covered in camo. Cache in good nick and coords are spot on. Cheers

Checked this cache today... and it seems to be intact...
Will someone please go find it...

I had tried this Cache in the past and struggled with WP2. I happened to be talking to the Cache owner about another one of his long lost “Multies†and he accidentally "Leek"'ed a little clue about this one. I Found WP2 quickly the second time and then off to GZ. Took only a few minutes once there and I was signing the log. Nice walk in although being at night all I saw in the way of wild life was a Tawny Frogmouth when I got out of the car. Great Cache Leek and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now can you get the other one going again please?

Almost a year and a half I returned to find Waypoint 2 in a a little under two minutes. Hmmmm - silly boy.

The walk to GZ was great, lots of lizards along the way, smelly mangroves (mmmmm) and a great sized cache. Now have my first clue for Happily Ever After. Leek, one of your best caches. Cheers.

A week ago we’d gotten quite grumpy after a futile search for WP2. In the end we weren’t even sure about WP1 anymore! So back came we today for another bout with the little creep. Recent logs along the lines of “easy find†are so tiresome in these situations aren’t they?

Anyway, after about 20mins we were starting to feel grumpy again. Once more we got to the stage where we couldn’t even be sure about WP1. All of a sudden though all was revealed! What a nasty piece of work for poor simple bushwalkn’ folk like usn’s. We do so struggle sometimes to come to terms with some of these despicable big city ways……..

After all that, the actual cache was a delightful doddle. What a lovely little walk! Really nice we thought. At GZ the cache was in hand in mere seconds and we completed the requisite duties on a nice rock taking in the river views. Thanks Leek – excellent cache and very…………….instructive. We took the small candle plus glass stones and left a photo album plus small karabiner.

Finding WP1 didn't take long, and WP2 was as quick... must have been in the zone. GZ...far out, that's a walk and a half. Enjoyed the trek out to the cache location. Took a bit of scramble to actually locate the cache but eventually found it. Left a carabiner keyring. Thanks for the great cache. It's a wonderful area.

We can hardly remember when we tried this one for the first time. It's over a year ago, amazing. This time, the whole Antipode team went and we found it after a few minutes. Of course, we'd already done the first and second waypoint (which is pretty easy now). TFTC Took: CD, left: pen (which works a bit) and puzzle.

Found WP1 and did the maths, but then spent the next 40 minutes walking in concentric circles searching for WP2. This one has me stumped.

Found WP1 months ago but then it got dark. Finally got back to WP2 last night but thought we were looking for the cache, and then it got dark again. Realised our mistake on the way home so up bright & early this morning to run over and finish it off.
Thanks LEek
Took keyring wrench, left big green spider

BTW, log-book pen wouldn't work, didn't have a spare so signed with Simpson hiliter. Will check it out next time geo-hound drags us over there for his evening run and take a spare pen with us.

Found the first 2 wapoints easily, but had trouble at GZ. GPS said 43m to go, then said 32m past it. Edged up until it said 3m and laid it down 6m, 8m, 9m all with 7m accuracy! Found it about 9m away.
Put GPS at gz while I filled out the log and it finally settled at 0m.

My first NSW cache Leek, thanks.Did this with a mate from WA who's definately going to get into caching now. Earlier we missed Stringy (couldn't find the first waypoint)and therefore didn't have an opportunity to take up your offer of giving you a call. But had great time with Grumpy and WP2 is exceptional (which my new geocaching mate found in fact) . TNLNSL. I can't wait to do Hard Rock in Brisbane and your others when I'm in Sydney next.

We found the first two WPs easily. The female Antipode went on to find the cache, but couldn't find it. (The male Antipode didn't go, because the mini Antipode just fell asleep.) The female Antipode mentioned that she found a place that would be excellent and she tought that the cache should have been there... We hope the cache is still there. We will try this one again soon.

Found WP1 easily enough.

Circled around where we thought WP2 should be for a good thirty minutes without any luck though. The search was eventually called off due to encroaching rainclouds.

Definitely one for next time.

Used to know this guy who everyone called the grump, and he was a real grump. The things that used to happen this guy where so funny, you could not wait to hear who he had upset next. Once he started a feud with a crane operator and his dogman on a building site and every Friday it was payback time. One Friday he found his car had been moved and at first he thought it was stolen, that was until he looked up.

If anybody saw a red ute parked 30M from WP1 today...No it was not abandoned I just spent the whole morning there looking for a Grumpy. I am in two minds about this cache. The mind I used today just could not get its act together. I will have to come back with a better one next time. I think I got to WP1 without a prob. I am sure I even got to WP2. Without saying too much I am a bit confused. Like I say I am in two minds. I just cant see the light. Proceeded to spend the next two - three hours walking up and down the paths. What a lovley area. I spent the time as I enjoyed the challenge and even thinking laterally, vertically and horizontally I still did not find Grumpy. I am not Grumpy..just more determined. So I am off to Lane Cove Lake to drop off TB "Fire".
Thanks Leek.

Found this one, after remebering it was a Leek cache, and locting the wp that had been staring me in the face for a while.

Cheched for toxins in the advised location, found none, so continued on to the cache. had a slight problem when i took the wrong turn only a few meters in on the trail and thought i had the co-ords wrong,as the trail disappeared.
did a recheckand thought a little harder, and was on my way.
took the lower trail, and found cache easily.

took something, left my mini pocket camera in the cache by accident, amazing I didn't notice. NO this want meant to be my swap.
Only realised it was missing 2 caches later when I wanted to take a photo DOH!, Thanks leek for checking and retreiving it for me. lucky for me no one else tried to do GRUMPY before leek could check it for me.

After several failed attempts at this one, I jumped at the chance to take a shot at Grumpy with Toolkit and a second pair of eyes. Sure enough, I was way off on the wrong track on my previous attempts. However, with a fresh idea, we found WP2 without too much drama and made our way to the GZ where we found the cache after a brief 10 minute search.

Left a sports whistle and took a small disney toy. Also took Katie the TB. Thanks Leek for another top adventure, and once again thanks for the help from Toolkit, without whom I'd still be scratching my head over this one!

Found by Mary & David at 1845. Grumpy is how we felt when we got to WP1 late this morning to find a van parked right next to it. Curses! Foiled again! The driver was convinced we were lost and didn't leave us alone. Found the magic number but nothing else. Great to call in later to see Leek and chat over a cool drink. Unfortunately for us, he gave nothing else away. Went back after that and relieved to find the coast clear. A quick search and WP2 almost leapt out at us, then we headed off on the walk. A stunning area - we loved it all. Took padlock, left candle and glowing star. Thanks again, Leek.

Started this cache last Thursday as a bit of lunch time exercise with GeoRover Jon. We had WP1 logged in no time flat. WP2 however was a different story. It seems the area around WP2 is a favourite place for the local tradesmen to come and have some lunch and a bit of a kip. Not to be deterred we sat and had our lunch at the nearby lookout and pondered our next move. By the time we'd eaten our sangas the tradesmen were getting ready to go, so a few minutes later it was Game On! We still had a bit of a search on our hands before WP2 finally gave up it's secret. We also called the LeekLine to confirm our search quadrant. Finally we got the required info, but it was time to head back to work.

Tuesday comes around and it's time to knock this one off, so back we go to pick up the trail again. We thought we'd already deciphered the clue about the high and low roads but we soon realised we were wrong. We ended up taking the low road which was less strenuous in the midday heat. We finally got to GZ and started looking around. I located the cache fairly quickly. I should have let GeoRover find it in retrospect, but you know how a cache hunt can get the adrenaline running...

Filled out the logbook and swapped a compass/whistle for a Sylvester train thingy.

I think we are about half way through the Happily Ever After series now.

Good one Leek

A lunchtime adventure with the Ginger Loon.

Trust the Welsh waypoint wizard to come up with such a challenge. Inspector Gregson on his first cache had us bashing the bush for half an hour looking for WP2 before the more senior and experienced squire honed in on the target. It was then a pleasantly brisk walk to the principal cache. Left a compass whistle. Very cunning, Leek; thanks for the fun!

Aaaah, this one had all the elements of a classic Leek cache!

I too found WP2 whilst searching for WP1. My suspicion about WP1 was confirmed at the same time. Opted for the low road, and meandered across to the next WP. Arrival at GZ demanded that I should think like a Leek once more. I dumped the GPSr, found the most trodden area off the path, and voila! Smile

Nice spot, took a few photos of the river and wildflowers on my way back.

The Etrex was otherwise employed, so we took the rusty (that's rusty, not trusty) old receiver and managed to be so far off course that we found wp2 first! Then it was on to stumble across the cache just before dark. No swaps, thanks Leek.

After WP2 finally yoielded itself to me, this morning (and an annoying thing called work) went along the river and eventually found GZ. Maj had me all over the place before I finally stumbled on the cache just as I was about to give up due to failing light.

No swaps

Couldn't find it. We'll sleep on it ...and go Grumpy hunting tomorrow. Thanks Leek

If the sum of the first 2 digits of the 5 digit number was 5, you sould take the .005 from the .135 and end up with .130. I've added this to the instructions now...
