Description

This cache is dedicated to Peter 'Possum' Bourne, who passed away on April 30th 2003.

Your experience with this cache will vary. If you visit on a lovely clear calm day, you will possibly walk away thinking this was one of the better moments of your caching career. On the other hand, if your visit is on a day that's not ideal, you'll be wanting to hunt us down and hang us from the nearest tree! Luckily there aren't many in the area :o)

The Drive
It may seem strange dedicating a cache to a rally driver, but I'm sure once you've visited this cache, you'll agree that Possum would have enjoyed himself if he was visiting this area. The drive to this cache is nothing short of, how can I put it. . . interesting.

Bad weather will restrict the accessibility, at least by car. If it's wet you'll need a 4WD, if it's snowing I think you'll have to walk, or use a GeoCopter(tm). Given this isn't really an option for most cachers, I'd try to pick a nice clear dry day for the best caching experience. Tourists should be encouraged to have a go at this one, especially if you have a hire car ;-) Cachers using GeoCopters(tm) should be wary of transmission towers in the area.

The Cache
You're looking for a round plastic container. I haven't used this type of container before, so I'm not sure if it can handle the environmental extremes - maybe the first finder can give me a report on how it's doing? The contents are all in individual zip lock bags to protect them from the weather - if you swap an item please place it in the bag that held the item you took.
The terrain around the cache is somewhat rough, so to make it a little easier to find I haven't hidden it out of view, as long as you walk past it, you should see it. The chances of GeoMuggles finding it are slim, I really don't think anyone will be casually walking past.

Warnings
As with much of Tasmania, the weather in this area can change in an instant, please keep this in mind whilst visiting the cache. Take adequate clothing, wear good footwear, and please drive carefully.

Over the long weekend I made a plan to knock off several challenge caches including caches from "Old School Challenge" GC44WV0 and "Tasmanian Mainland LGA Challenge" GC8CGMX, as well as a few caches for various statistic grids. I'm happy to say LGA is now complete and Old School is well on the way. A fantastic, busy, and adventure filled 3 days was had, covering 1500km from Huonville, to Ben Lomond, then Georgetown, across the top to Burnie, down through Waratah, Queenstown, and back to Huonville. Lots of great caches, new places to explore, fantastic views, and interesting locations...

Wow, what a drive up here. Amazing scenery and views. Nice walk out across the top and onto the rocks. I walked too far and decided that was far enough before the GPS settled and I saw the cache looking back. Fantastic this is still here after all this time Smile

Lovely area on a fine day like today. Plenty of views to be had despite the haze. After climbing Barrow South, Barrow South West and of course Barrow itself we popped over to the small knoll which is home to this one. Cache is in good condition and is nicely situated.

"Hello Horus thank you for the cache.

This is the second time I have been up this mountain and the second time I have been to look for this cache and on both times I had the great pleasure of having EeePees company.
On our first trip the weather was so bad up here we decided not to get out of the car to have a look. Today when we got here the weather wasn't too bad so we went and found a cache before having a look around the farther away towers but by the time we got back to the car the weather had turned with the wind getting quite bad.

After moving the car to as close as practicable to the cache I look a direct route to GZ before having to make a detour around the looming assent in front of me. Once at GZ it didn't take too long before the cache was found.

Found on Saturday 13 March 2021 at 1307

Hi Horus - thanks for the cache way up here.
An excellent weekend's caching away with AlbyDangles, and at the risk of offending others, it doesn't get much better than that; although sometimes enhanced by others.
An early start, with the primary goal being to conquer Mount Barrow, as our previous attempt was aborted as were were blown off the mountain - dreadful conditions.
After completing a few errands in Launceston, we decided, despite the impending bad weather to risk a trip up here, arriving at the gate beyond the car park a bit after 11am.
The weather was closing in a little, but still looked okay, although the wind and occasional scuddy shower prompted the donning of coats, and a beanie for those who could find theirs!
First we enjoyed the walk out to South Barrow, and exploring the area around the TV towers, including the remains of supports where previous tower/s were - no longer a trig point as such.
By the time we'd got back to the car, the trig beacon and other towers were well and truly under cloud, the winds had picked up, and showers increased. It would have been certain madness to attempt the trig point; but we did tough out the elements and headed out to search for this old school cache. Definitely coats and warm layers required, but once at GZ, we were in the lee of the wind, and AlbyDangles made a quick find.

We'll have to come back another time to tackle the trig point survey beacon., as this makes it twice now we've been dispatched off Mount Barrow due to seriously bad weather! Oh well.

Good to tick this one off though.
Cheers, EPs.

out and about with 1 Rafa caching, off to the north and then the east perhaps. TFTC Horus. TNBPLN log dry. a long search because of the nature of GPSr's and little reception it took a hour at least to find, I had the first search and GZ was at a big vertical rock that was not hiding anything and then Lil Rafa had a search and found it back about 5 meters from GZ as the GPSr had it, but it was found in the end. too many rocks and tooo many hiding spaces. thank goodness we found it.!

Thanks for the cache Horus.

RLD4963 and I were visiting the north of the state for a couple of days. This cache was on our 'must find' list as RLD4963 was keen to find the remaining caches that will qualify him to complete the Old School Challenge. This was one of those caches, being one of the oldest caches in Tasmania.

Well this turned out to be quite a search. First we both approached GZ to search for the cache, it was soon apparent that I did not have approrpriate leg coverage (I do love Richea scoparia, but not on bare legs), so then RLD4963 searched for a while. It was probably another 30 minutes or so before I offerred to take over. I was quite determined, we had come a long way, and driven up a gnarly road to search for this cache - it had to be here, we just needed to find it. To be honest I had given up and was just about to let RLD4963 know, when I spotted it - I just needed to be in the right spot to see it. Nice one! There were a few woohoos! after that, and we were extremely glad to add our names to the log.

A true old school challenge cache! Luckily for us, the weather was kind, not cold, not windy, occasionally it clouded over on the summit but never where we were. Thanks for giving us a reason to visit Mount Barrow, and for placing a cache here all those years ago.

Just noticed i never logged this one over a year ago, I was up this way with Gooseandegg as we were showing an uncle from the UK the area after going to a CITO in Launy, Thanks for the old cache

This cache has been mentioned many times but for some reason never been a priority (not sure why). Apart from the smoke (which eventually cleared) it was a perfect day to zip up the mountain to search for this oldie.
Unlike the previous finders, I didn't need it for the old school challenge cache so maybe that's why I've never been to look. It took a little bit of searching as the GPS wasn't fully cooperate. From the correct angle it is actually very easy to see!
Thanks Horus, I'm glad I have a smiley here now Smile

Wow, what an awesome location! We were blessed with idyllic conditions today for a trip up here. The views are breathtaking and the drive up was like Jacob's Ladder at Ben Lomond but on steroids - you would not want to lose control! This cache is now the 15th oldest in Tassie and is currently required to qualify for the Old School Challenge - Tasmania. This was our final qualifying cache and what a superb one to finish off with. TFTC!
Cheers,

We came up here chasing a GC cache but were turned around by workmen telling us it was a no go zone Crying or Very sad . What a good thing there was a GCA nearby in a "go zone" to make the hairy drive up worthwhile. Though there was a bit of "hairy" walking involved to get there! Cache was in amazingly dry & good condition. It must spend some of it's days buried under a metre of snow. Thanks Horus.

Hi Horus
My first time to Mt Barrow
An exhilarating drive up and later down
The views just hit you in the face as soon as step out of the car - impressive!!
Enjoyed the walk to GZ and the thrill of the hunts as I got closer to the cache
Sainted this good one at 1320hrs.
Back to the car and along the way found an old kids swimming pool - who'd swim up here?
Loved it!!!!!
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

My hands nearly froze off! thanks (I think)

01-May-14
Lets just say the Cache owners are VERY lucky they were nowhere in sight and there was a distinct lack of trees! It was so cold I was having trouble holding the GPS but we managed in the end.

The scary drive up made me remember why it's been years since I've been up there and thankfully now we have no reason to go back Dancing

01-Feb-14
Well this cache was not so easy to find due to the fact that found it 5M away from where my GPSr was pointing to with a 3M EPE. I was about to give up then seen something under the rock & there it was signed log & replaced the cache then relised that i had cut my arm on something & it was on my shorts the GLW was not happy.

23-Nov-13
Beautiful views, and the visibility isnt too bad today, a bit of cloud around, but the still conditions are just great. I've been up here in some terrible conditions. Tftc

21-May-11
A beautiful sunny day on the mountain till you step out of the car! Awesome views worth the drive up. All is good at GZ TFTC

23-Feb-11
Walked past the cache as gps said I has 6m to go. After a search and back tracking I dont know how I missed it. Container is in good condition and contents dry. TNLN Thanks

05-Dec-10
The low and dense cloud persisted and there were periods of light rain. In the poor visibility we missed Razork but did not miss this cache - thankfully we went in the right direction and stumbled on the cache, despite our GPS saying that we had another 7m to go. Cache in excellent condition. We must return sometime when the weather is better - the views should be spectacular. TFTC

05-Dec-10
I'm sure Possum would have made the climb up the road faster than me today. I left the 2wd at the hut and rode the mountain bike up (well yes I did have to push the last few corners)then wandered accross to collect the cache. No views today with low cloud and drizzle giving about 50m visibility. Cache is in pristine condition. TNLN. TFTC!

16-Dec-09
Thongs are not appropriate for this cache I found out today, had a look for this cache once before but the snow was too deep, found easy this time TFTC

31-Oct-09
Our last of the three caches up here. This one proved a bit illusive for a while and it reminded me of the long period of time we spent looking for the one at the Burnie breakwater [which wasn't there!]. So many holes it could be in! But after widening our search we came up with the goods. Great view from up here and not as scary as the nearby trigpoint. Thanks.

16-May-09
Wow what a great view from this side.
Lucky to find because there had been a sprinkling of snow making traversing a bit tricky.
All good with the cache although bags are getting a bit fragile (cold?)
Yep it was freezing but worth it for the find.

TFTC TNLN

09-May-09
WOW what a view from up here
All the years driving past and just never got up here
Even the road is gr8 for the 4x4 drive up

Found cache after a quick search all is well at GZ

If published there will be a second cache in the area (more photo's of the views)

thnx for this cache

Cruising along the highway toward Launceston this morning I could see this impressive mountain towering above me.
It was a crystal clear, warm and calm day so there was absolutely nothing stopping me heading up there !!
The drive is superb and even entertaining for the last couple of kilometres.
But once at the summit it is a different world.
Reminds me of mountain tops in Europe, with all those ariels and buildings hanging off the rock outcrops.
But the views are superb and even more so from the cache location.
It took me a couple of minutes to locate the cache hiding under a rock overhang.
The container was intact. That is until I reached in to pick it up and the fragile plastic just splintered Surprised
I had expected this from reading last years logs and had a new container in my backpack.
So I signed the log and took the old container with me.
TFTC and views and excuse to drive up here again Smile

08-Nov-08
Was in the area but after being almost blown off the side of the mountain I abandoned further searching. Will come back another time. Quite a bit of water laying around walking over to the spot after very heavy rains.

13-Apr-08
we found this one on a cold day but at least it wasn't snowing,
the view was really good but drive up was pretty scary,
TNLN thanks for the cache,

13-Apr-08
Found this one easily after a scramble to GZ,
There was a real chill in the air on top today,
The views were awesome as ever,
Have been meaning to do this one for quite some time now,
Thanks for the cache Horus

03-Mar-08
Thanks for the report on the condition of the container - might have to get up there before winter to renew it, it gets pretty harsh up there in the winter months!

02-Mar-08
Top spot, the wind had a slight chill in it. The flora was great and colourful. The cache container is now quite fragile however all the contents are dry and in good condition.
Left Calling card and SL

Thanks for the hunt

14-Apr-07
Have been up here before many years ago to paint that roof believe it or not!!
Never really took the time to take in the views on offer up here at the time, SO when we got to GZ..... WOW!!!! What a view that is!!!!!!!
Was a very clear day today so could see for miles…..Thanks for bringing me back Surprised)
NOW…... Off to that cache down there about 14km away… (Unfortunately, that’s a different story!!!!) TNLNSL……

Just read the last log by FF and also your note Horus.
Container was still as FF described BUT everything inside was still safe and dry.
Placed it back so it was sitting ‘flat’ and also placed a small ‘rock’ against it so as to hold it in that position. (I don’t think that’s giving away any clues), (rock), I think you know what I mean by that… LOL….
I don’t think there is any urgent need to replace it as it’s been here for quite some time and I’m quite sure it will last a while yet…

12-Dec-06
Thanks for the condition report ff, we will try to get up there ourselves sometime to make sure the cache is nice and snug for the next snow season.

Might give a Sistema a go this time, although the container it's in at the moment is the original and it seems to have lasted well.

11-Dec-06
Well this turned out to be easier and harder than anticipated. Thanks for another great cache! Drive was easy and pleasant in wannabe 4x4 through an absolute snowstorm of native musk daisies - white xmas ! topped off with red waratahs and absolutely everything else in flower beautiful Stopped to watch the butterflies. Cache found easily although UV damage has made the handle brittle; there was a great deal of suction, this is one airtight cache - struggled with lid as the lifting bit was not in a goodspot for getting fingers under the lid and bit of handle snapped off! Contents exploded over the scree and the geocoin almost fell out of its too large bag between the rocks! Cache still seals properly but this summer may be the end of the line for it. Next finder advised to bring spare 2L box
Left glowstick, took one NZ coin and geocoin, removed rusty pill tin and clamp otherwise all contents made it back inside Smile

11-Nov-06
A .com Travel Bug has been placed in this cache. Mext to visit please recover.

Good hide..excellent view..cold and windy though..cache in good order.TNLNSL Cheers Horus

18-Jan-06
Left Launceston and Mt Barrow was clear - thought "Great, I'll have good views."

Got to the rocks screes and the cloud cover dropped about 2000m so now I'm driving in mist.

Found the cache OK and was surprised there was just a small puff of wind but not blowing a gale.

TN L golf ball.

Thanks for the driving workout Horus.

Didnt make it to the peak so cant claim this on my peak baggers list....will have to return on a day with more clothing....explored the hut and the ice areas around....view from top wasnt as good as view from just slightly down the road...but still stunning.
Signed cache with frostbitten fingers and ran to car to defrost. TNLN Thanks for this one...will return to get the peak Smile

Help! I can't feel my... anything!!!!

It was very, very cold up there. Team Tiges has returned from a short break from caching, and what better way to do that than to get up somewhere high, with extreme weather conditions and great views. We were kindly driven up the mountain by Aloysius, which was new experience altogether, luckily he hadn't forgotten how. The road appeared not to be too much trouble, and old cecil (Klaus' brother) made it to the top okay. The views from the road on the way up were great, unfortunately though, the mountain itself had managed to attract the only bit of cloud in the state! Sad So views up there weren't so good. But nonetheless we enjoyed the cache, there was lots of ice everywhere, and... oh, did I mention it was very very cold? It was quite a challenge to sign the logbook while wearing snow gloves.
The trip back down was fun, cecils brakes just about spontaneously combusted! I wish I was driving, it looked fun! Good old Possum would've loved it! Smile

Thanks Horus, best cache we've done for a while (at least two weeks anyway)! Wink

13-Feb-05
My first log for a GCA cache! What can I say other than truely spectactular! This was the first cache of our NE Valentines Day caching weekend, and it was pretty hard to beat. However I now know we will NOT be entering the cacheMobile in the Targa. TNLNSL. Good one Horus!

06-Jan-05
After today events at gc.com I no longer have any faith in them as the keepers of my caches - so for the time being, until I decide what to do - or calm down, whichever comes first, all my caches have been archived.

28-Nov-04
Woke up this morning to a beautiful, hot, late November Tassie day. The perfect day for seeking out this cache! No snow, no ice and no slippery road to contend with and we could see the mountain from our balcony and there was neither mist nor cloud.

So up we went!

The road was great, we loved it. Subirubi handled it easily, as did the little Lancer and flat tray ute that were ahead of us. We arrived at the nearest point to GZ, opened the car doors, stepped out ... and ... whoooooosh, we were blown all the way back down the mountain leaving Subirubi behind!! (Just joking!!.. Smile ..)

But hey, it was soooo, soooo windy!!

We arrived at GZ and stood there totally gobsmacked. The view from this cache is a view that has to be seen to be believed. 'Mere words' cannot possibly describe the vista that lay before us!!

The cache is in excellent condition, as were the contents. We took a network cable and left a yo-yo.

Thankyou Horus and Bastvet for leading us to here.

17-Oct-04
Clear day but a bit cool. Found it ok. Went there with Craigrat. It really is a great veiw from up there.

28-Apr-04
Riptide - the rocks came from the top of the mountain, Bast and I often wonder how high the mountain would be with all the rocks on top! Constant freezing and thawing of ice on the mountain causes the rocks to break up and roll down the slope - sounds simple but it probably took a few hundred thousand years or so, luckily this doesn't appear to have happened recently Surprised) Quite a sight isn't it? Nearby Ben Lomond is similar, in fact the drive up there is just as thrilling - I'll be putting a cache in the area soon, so you'll have a reason to take the drive next time you're here.

19-Apr-04
We also would never have known about this place if it weren't for Geocaching. The mountain looked formidable but our Commodore wagon thinks its a 4WD and madde it up there easily. The road was unbelievably steep and scary, but unlike others we did this cache in the morning with no mist. We are actually wondering where all the rocks have come from, did someone put them there?? Found the cache quite easily, took spanner and left a mini clamp.

05-Apr-04
Found on an almost perfect geocaching day at a location we probably would have missed if there hadn't been a cache here. I guess that that's why caching is so much fun. Great place, Great views. Took racing car and left rescue truck. Rest In Peace Possum Bourne. Thanks Horus & Bastet.

Found with Geofreak while holidaying in Tassie. No exchange. Great drive up and fantastic views.

Wow, it did not seem like it was going to be a tough drive.... it was wet and slippery, covered in clouds... and then the road really started to climb! The Pintara made it up the hill! We found the cache and enjoyed the cloud views Sad

I'd spent Saturday in the Launceston City Council Chambers, installing all their new computers. Within a stone's throw of Horus' web cam cache. Never got a chance to get over there and grab it, which I was a tad peeved about.

So I decided to make up for it on sunday afternoon. I took three mates, one of whom (Nath) is a seasoned geo-offsider. For my other two companions (Eric and Brett), this was a new experience.

Road was good fun. My Suby Sportswagon wasn't quite up to Possum's standard, but made light work of the road regardless... Wink

We were treated to a magnificent sunset on the way up, which my attached pics don't do justice to. It was getting dark by the time we left the car to hoof it through the mist.

Eric found the cache, after a brief search by all of us. The container seems to have proved it's worth (not there very long, I know, but it was in A1 condition). We took the automotive fuses and extractor, and left a pad of AMD Athlon post-it notes and a passport-photo sized leather-look picture frame.

All in all, a very pleasant and satisfying jaunt in the country, with great company, great sunset, and potentially great views but for darkness and mist. A very impressive mountain, and highly recommended.

RIP Possum Bourne
