Description

This is a 3km return bushwalk through some open Wandoo forest.

You will need to know how to navigate to and from the cache as there are no formed tracks. Long pants, sturdy shoes, gators, and own water supply will be needed.

Suggested Parking Co-ordinates S31 57.175 E116 25.526. Which is a track off Yarra Road. Cars can be parked just off Yarra Road but not in full view from the road. This location also gives access to the cache without fighting the prickly Dryandra Bush(parrot).

We suggest from the parking co-ordinates you walk about 600 metres to S31 57.223 E116 25.250. This will take you over an easy rise through some Sheoak and Grass Trees. Then follow the gully round the other hills to GZ. It is a pleasant walk through open Wandoo Forests.

The Matriach as we call her has survived the loggers saw and now holds court to a group of young saplings.

It is a favourite spot for us to sit and picnic when we are out bushwalking.

Summer will see tics aplenty. Be prepared to minimise risk.

The cooler months provide extra benefits of flowing creeks.

There are vehicle tracks that are visible leaving Yarra Rd which are closed to traffic. Please do not be tempted to drive on these closed tracks.

The cache is an ammo container in a hollow tree stump.

Great coin by the way. Thank you very much for leaving it.

Wanted to do all of the caches in this area, but running out of time. Parked next to Yarra Road as suggested and enjoyed the walk in ... the area is a riot of colour with the wild flowers at the moment. Found the cache without problems. Took your coin and left some path tags - one each of my two Firnsy tags and also a "15 Years of Caching in WA" tag.

Was going to do your GC cache nearby as well, but I thought I had lost my sunnies on the way in, so wanted to take the same route back ... it was slow going using my GPSr to back track as close as possible to my route in. Turned out my sunnies were in the car. Doh!

SL. Thanks for the hide Belken ... I might get back one day to do your GC one.

Out for a walk doing the circuit only to find a motor bike track comes straight past this spot now. Was quiet today. Glad it wasn't the weekend. The log I used to sit on now has a dusty track about 3 metres away. Makes me sad. But still the lady is still there. The cache hasn't rusted through yet and is dry and I left an Unactivated Belken Geocoin trackable at that Groundspeak site for the next cachers looking to make the journey.

This one was in my sights today, alas, I ran out of time. Another day ...

For quite some time I've been wanting to get out and find the GCA caches in this area, and today was finally the day. Left home just before 7am and arrived at the parking spot just on 8am. Returned just on 10am with 3 GCA finds and 1 GC find. Now that we're getting into some cooler weather, it's a great time of year to be out in the Wandoo.

Another quick find once at GZ. Took a good half hour or so to get here from the other GCA cache, with a slight diversion to the Wandoo GC cache. Followed the motor bike tracks from here back towards Yetar Picnic as they got me within about 750m.

Wow, 5 years without a find. Pity, as it's a wonderful place out here. As suggested I just stood and listed to the breeze and birds ... and that was all I could here. Fantastic! TFTC

The old girl is still there. Out for a walk and checked up on or caches in the area before summer sets in. All caches were in good condition and should be safe from bushfires. A pleasant couple of hours spent on a sunday.

No logs since March 2010 so I decided to walk around the area and check our caches in the area. Came down the spur line from Mt Yetar. Even though it is very dry I still enjoyed the walk. This cache we thought would take more punishment as its in a tree stump with leaves etc falling on top. However it has lasted well and not rusted through and is still airtight. Contents were in good condition considering some had been here for the whole 9 years. Must get a little more heat as some of the packaging was a little discoloured.

I leaned against the tree trunk and just soaked up the serenity. Getting a bit warm. This area is much better I believe in the cooler months. We have walked down this valley just after a rain shower with a mist hanging low. Its a magic place to be at those times.

I had to force myself awake for the walk back.

This cache was the seventh in a series I did as part of an enjoyable mornings bushwalking and caching. The circuit I did was a mix of GC and GCA caches;
Billy’s toy box (GC)
Bryncyn (GCA)
Gwern (GCA)
Ynys Pos (GCA)
Yetar Picnic (GCA)
Wandoo Garden (GC)
Wandoo Kindergarten (GCA)
Grass Tree Castle (GCA)
I can recommend all of these caches. TFTH.

Cache number 3 in my 4-cache loop in this area. Enjoyed the walk down the hill from the last cache, and the area was gorgeous!

Found the cache without trouble, and it was in good condition. I managed to snaffle the very last finders card. Smile

Thanks for the cache.

Last of the series of four. The cache was well away from where we had GZ but it was in the only possible hiding spot - everything else had been burned away. Cache itself is in good condition and we took a finder's card. Thanks BelKen, this has been a good series of caches in a great area.

Not sure that we chose the easiest route but arrived at GZ none the less. This is indeed wonderful bush land and well worth the visit, thanx Belken

Found my second cache on a very wet day.

Found on a hike over the weekend,
By now we were all soaked to the skin but still enjoyed the walk,
Great area to hike around in, just a shame about the rain as it spoiled our plans to camp on Mt Gorrie
Thanks

The fourth out of eight for the day.
The weather won, so we did not camp out overnight.

Called by on an aborted weekend backpack and geocaching bushwalk. The weather won this weekend. Found the cache in good condition.

Came up from Wandoo Garden and, when my GPSr was still saying 27m, my cacher sense was saying "There it it!" (I hadn't read the listing or that would've been much less impressive!)

It was there, and I couldn't resist the allure of the cable ties, so the next finder can score a nice pair of binoculars. And one of the last two or three finders cards.

Now, for the long trek back via Yetar...

Nice easy walk from Yetar.Got better as the bush opened up and made up a bit of time. The birds were calling at this time of the morning, best time to hear them.

08:15 Walk up the gully from Wandoo Garden is great. Easy find but I did notice the coords read 13m at GZ, don't know if it was the canopy/clouds but on approach I spied the likely object 40m away so it didn't really matter. TFTH

After walking to Yetar Picnic, I walked cross country to this cache, coming down a particularly steep hill. Once again, views along the way were great, and I saw many kangaroos on the way back. T: screwdriver set and a cache card, L: lightstick. Thanks to Belken for another great GCA cache.

Like Aushiker we stayed more up on the ridge walking down to the cache from 'Yetar Picnic' cache. We were entertained a lot of the way by the White Tailed Black Cockatoo's who were shifting around us as we walked through the trees they were perched in.

The area around the cache was quite peaceful by comparison.

The cache was found with no trouble and it was in good condition after the recent rains but as it was sitting on the very wet mulch in the bottom of the stump we put a couple of small logs under it to lift it above the wet and placed a bigger bit of bark directly over it to divert the water coming down from the trees above.

We took nothing and left nothing. Thanks for the cache.

Our fourth First to Find for the day. Been quite a successful day indeed. We picked this one up after finding Yetar's Picnic. We "ignored" the GPS for most of this hunt until the last 1000 metres or so, preferring to stay higher up on the ridge as much as possible. This improved the walk and reduced the ups and downs. We spotted the matriarch easily from a distance and cache within moments of arrival. The cache is in good condition.

Our recommendation is that if time is short and only one of the three caches can be done, do this one. It is a very lovely walk through the valley to the cache and would be even better when the creeks are running.

We took the padlock and left an alloy torch and batteries package. Thanks Belken for four enjoyable caches and a lovely walk in the Wandoo.

It was 7 km walk circuit for us and we took it easy, averaging just over 3 km per hour, so taking just over 2 hours to walk it plus stopping at the caches and having lunch.
