Description

A 3.5km return bushwalk.

You will need to know how to navigate to and from the cache as there are no formed tracks. Long pants, sturdy shoes, gators, and own water supply will be needed.

Suggested Parking Co-ordinates S31 57.175 E116 25.526. Which is a track off Yarra Road. Cars can be parked just off Yarra Road but not in full view from the road. This location also gives access to the cache without fighting the prickly Dryandra Bush(parrot).

The cache location is on a ridge that provides views over the valley to Mt Billy and Mount Observation. A wonderful spot to rest after the climb.

From the parking area above out suggested route is WP1 S31 57.211 E116 25.195 WP2 S31 57.017 E116 24.985

This should take you through open woodland and up a fairly tame spur for the moderately fit.

You could decide to visit the summit of Mt Yetar at S31 57.238 E116.24.216. A further 650 metres because it is there.

The Cache is an ammo container in rocks at the base of a tree.

Having hidden a GC cache nearby the other day, it got me thinking about any unfound GCA's in the area. My eyes soon lit up when I noticed that this one apparently hadn't been found for close to 7 years AND contained a geo-coin Shocked With 13yo DangerMouse09 having a student-free day, I decided that this little adventure would be a great father-son outing.
There was prescribed burns happening along Yarra Rd near Ridley Rd, and I began to worry. We kept going until I decided that we may have found a good start point away from the smoke. Looking now, it was about 500m south of the suggested parking WP on the opposite side of Yarra Rd. We set off following the creek bed until we come across a motorbike track heading in the direction we needed to go, so up we went.
1.5 kms later we popped out at the top with me doing a little more huffing than my 13yo son Rolling Eyes The ammo box is in great shape still and opening it revealed plenty of items inside .. including a little water in the bottom. The logbook was dry and upon inspection showed that there had been a visitor in October last year, but has not logged online. The geo-coin was found in the bottom of the tin but dry and in perfect condition Dancing ... hard to believe it's been in the cache for 8 years Shocked
A fanstastic spot in a great part of the word, it's a shame that more people don't visit GCA caches.
Thanks for the cache BelKen, and thanks for the great coin .. I will add it to my growing collection. Very Happy

The motor bike brigade has made a trail from Mt Dale I think and it passes with 20 metres of the cache. I think they have followed the walkgps trail which was published in about 2003/2004 as the trail follows closely what I remember the Mt Observation to Mt Dale bushwalk. This is supposed to be a no vehicle dieback zone. So much for rules and regs and public accessible information. However the cache was in good condition and instead of following a roo trail up the spur the motor bike track is easier to find.

Something to be said for remote caches on obscure websites as I am unsure whether anyone reads these logs. There has been an unclaimed unactivated Geocoin in the cache as a gift from us to the next cache finder that has sat through three visits and two years.

LOts of flowers out. I think more in a week. Weather perfect today. I am glad its a weekday as looking at the track it may get noisy on the weekend.

I had a mission to do the 4 GCA caches in this area today and get home by mid-day today to go to a ballet show, so set out from home shortly after 5am. The plan was to do a couple of caches along Yarra Road coming from the Northern end, then turn off at Ridley Rd to these caches.

Got carried away with the Wandoo caches though, and missed the turn-off, so ended up turning off at Smit Road and coming up Yetar Road. A couple of spots were a bit hairy in the Camry - especially the bit where I went cross country to get on the right road, only to find out that the two roads joined up a couple of hundred metres further on.

After doing Ynsy Pos, I moved the Camry back a bit closer to this one and headed up the bike trail from there. Wasn't a bad little work out walking up the steep section and then a meandering walk to the cache following contours where possible. Arrived here at about 9.30. Loved the views and stopped for a cup of tea before heading back to the Camry, encountering a group of bush-walkers en route.

SL and dropped in a path tag. Thanks for the hide Belken

Looking for the GCA caches in the area, only managed to find three for the day (GCA Ones that is) Had to finish a little earlier than planned as my friend developed some blisters and headed back to the car before getting here. Came up from Ynos Pos, its a tough walk up the hill. Enjoyed the views and the peace and quiet sitting by the cache. Thanks Belken for bringing me here.

For quite some time I've been wanting to get out and find the GCA caches in this area, and today was finally the day. Left home just before 7am and arrived at the parking spot just on 8am. Returned just on 10am with 3 GCA finds and 1 GC find. Now that we're getting into some cooler weather, it's a great time of year to be out in the Wandoo.

After finding Wandoo Kindergarten I follow the motorbike tracks for about 1km, which got me to the base of the climb. Great place for an early morning bush walk. Signed the log around 9:20am, and took in the view. Had to be back at work by 11am in Midland so alas couldn't get to Ynys Pos (GCA) today, but shall return another day.

Thanks BelKen for this series, pity more geocaches don't venture out this way. Definitely worth the trip. TFTC. Clan Minotaur

Out for a walk and checked up on or caches in the area before summer sets in. All caches were in good condition and should be safe from bushfires. A pleasant couple of hours spent on a sunday.

This cache hasn't been logged since MArch 2010 so I did the circuit today to check. I have done the direct line from Grass Tree Castle and its is a long steep prickly slog. So I followed my own advice and traversed to the spur. Whilst this adds some distance to the walk it certainly saves a few lung fulls. When we were originally placing the caches in 2005 "power trails" were frowned upon. Nowadays it seems I could lead cachers up the hill by placing a trail of caches where I wanted them to go. Maybe a thought for next time. I did find our original walk notepad with the waypoints from our walk route and notes for suggested cache hides. May bring it back. Could place another 10 caches on this walk route.

Cache was in good nick as expected with these ammo tins. I had to remove the tape measure Aushiker had placed in 2005 as it had broken and sprung apart.

I did leave a geocoinclub coin in the cache. It was called Unnecessary bushwacking. Had a note on it saying "The shortest distance between two points is a straight line". So true. But not necessarily the best line. It is a gift for the next "Bushwacker"

This cache was the fifth in a series I did as part of an enjoyable mornings bushwalking and caching. The circuit I did was a mix of GC and GCA caches;
Billy’s toy box (GC)
Bryncyn (GCA)
Gwern (GCA)
Ynys Pos (GCA)
Yetar Picnic (GCA)
Wandoo Garden (GC)
Wandoo Kindergarten (GCA)
Grass Tree Castle (GCA)
I can recommend all of these caches with this cache being the highlight of the morning, absolutely stunning views to the east. Even mobile reception which helped as I'd failed to bring the details of the Grass Tree Castle cache and had to phone hime for details. T:'biner light, L: Lego set. TFTH.

Phew, quite a walk up the hill. It was ominous-looking from the bottom, when my GPS pointed straight up and said 1km to go, but made steady progress to reach the top.

Had a good rest when I reached the cache. Love the views from up here! This was the 2nd cache in my 4-cache loop. I took the 2nd-last finders card, so there is 1 more left for the next finder.

Thanks for the cache!

The walk up the hill wasn't as difficult as it could have been as much of the undergrowth has been burned away in places. The fire didn't reach quite to the top so the cache was untouched. We stopped for some refreshments and then continued on to the Wandoo caches. Took a finder's card (there is only one left). Thanks BelKen, its a great view from the top.

Found after a bit of a bush bash, 1st for the day so it was too early for a picnic but enjoyed the view -- now on to Wandoo Kindergarten...
Thanx for the cache

Found on a hike over the weekend,
After finding the cache, we stoped on the top of this mountain for lunch,
We all sat about in the rain and ate what ever we could from our packs.

Great area to hike around in, just a shame about the rain as it spoiled our plans to camp on Mt Gorrie
Thanks

Oh, I wish I'd read the listing or the logs!
Even a topo map would've saved my aching legs from that last bit of climb if I'd detoured clockwise around Mt Yetar instead of widdershins!

Ah, well, I found an ammo can at the top so it was all worth it!
No swaps, and then back to the car and a most welcome cold drink.

The son decided to go with me on this one. We did it first as I was told it would be the hardest. Yes it was,but the view was worth it.

08:50 4th for the loop and 6th and last for the day. In hindsight this should of been the first of this 4 geocache loop because by the time I'd reached the top approaching the direct line from 'Kindergarten' I was spent and couldn't enjoy/appreciate the location. My recommendation for those following is to do this one first (following BelKen's instruction to use the spur) then traverse to Wandoo Kindergarten but veer right and stay on the high ground until you get there, then you will have a lovely walk down the gully to the 'Garden' and 'Castle' and a short climb back to the car. The way I came I ended up with a steepish climb and I rued the decision not to contour the high ground but on a brighter note, as I neared GZ I heard a SMS beep and found mobile reception so as I rested I returned some calls. (and SUEDENHARR rang me just as I opened the ammo tin)

All up it was a very pleasent experience and one I recommend to others.

After parking at the suggested coords, I made my way to both of the suggested waypoints, finding it quite tough going. The view from the cache site is wonderful - well worth the walk up and the cache was an easy find at the top of the hill. T: nail punch set and a cache card, L: soft football. Thanks Belken for a great GCA cache.

With the other half in tow I decided to get the hard cache out of the way first and went directly to this cache from the suggested parking spot.

Although it is a hard climb and is still prickly in places the views from the top are worth it.

The cache was found easily and it is in good condition still. We took nothing and left nothing. Thanks Belken for the cache.

Third First to Find for the day. Once again thanks Belken for the "shot." This was an interesting climb from Grass Tree Castle and a prickly one, but the views where worth it. For those not so imumne to Australian bush, you are strongly encouraged to take up Belken's advice of long pants and gators. All that said, the views where worth it. We took time out to have lunch up here. Took Simpson's Study Kit and left Duramax Tape Measure. Thanks Belken.
