Description

The story of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff is the first cache by GabGab.

Once upon a time there lived 3 Billy Goats Gruff. The billy goats had no more food on their side of the of the meadow, but across the bridge was a meadow full of sweet grass to eat. The problem was that under that bridge lived a very mean troll who would not let them cross "his" bridge. One day, they were so hungry that the billy goats decided to try and cross the bridge.

The littlest Billy Goat Gruff was the first to cross. Trip-trap, trip-trap, trip-trap.

The sound of his little hooves woke up the sleeping troll and he bellowed, "Who is walking across my bridge?

"It is only I" said the littlest billy goat gruff in his very small voice.

"I'm coming up to eat you!" said the angry troll.

"Oh, don't bother with me," said the little goat. "My brother is coming very soon and he is much bigger and tastier than I"

The troll grumbled and stomped, but he let the littlest goat cross the bridge and went back to sleep.

Soon the bigger Billy Goat Gruff started across the bridge. Trip-trap, trip-trap, trip-trap.

The sound of his middle sized hooves woke up the sleeping troll and he bellowed, "Who is walking across my bridge?"

"It is only I" said the middle-sized billy goat gruff in his middle-sized voice.

"I'm coming up to eat you!" said the angry troll.

"Oh, don't bother with me," said the middle goat. "My brother is coming very soon and he is much bigger and tastier than I"

The troll grumbled and stomped, but he let the middle-sized goat cross the bridge and went back to sleep.

Soon the biggest Billy Goat Gruff started across the bridge. TRIP-TRAP,TRIP-TRAP,TRIP-TRAP.

The sound of his large hooves woke up the sleeping troll and he bellowed, "Who is walking across my bridge?"

"It is I, The Great Billy Goat Gruff" said the biggest billy goat gruff in his very loud voice.

"I'm coming up to eat you and I am not waiting for another brother!" said the angry troll.

Up came the troll. The biggest goat put down his head and ran forward. He threw that troll right off the bridge into the river where the current carried him away. The troll was never seen again and the 3 Billy Goats Gruff were able to cross the bridge to enjoy the sweet grass on the other side of the meadow any time they wanted.

Hidden at the Troll bridge you will find my cache.

Take some bread with you to feed the many ducks and swans that live on the lake.

I hope you enjoy my first cache.

No trolls about and after a couple of wrong turns the cleverly crafted cache soon had our name added to the log. Not sure we would have found it with out resorting to the hint as it is well hidden.

TNLN . . SL . . Thanks for the hunt GabGab.

Very Happy What a wonderful area - so very picturesque - have driven Caroline Springs Blvd. 100's of times but never seen this 'treasure' - so thanks for this cache and the lovely walks we had today - cache was relatively easy to find by geo grandson - T: Col. Pencils and Dalmation. L: Whistle and Tape Measure.

2010-12-28 15:44 #147 On the way back from Intervening Days III we stopped here and myself and one of the geo-kids happily joined me in the hunt. Started off that we seemed to be on the wrong side of the bridge, then the wrong end. As we were having such trouble getting the GPSr accurate we used the hint on this one. After that it was a quick find. Not many muggles about at this spot as it's a little more secluded than the rest of the park. Took bouncy balls. Left beetle. TFTC SL

I arrived at GZ just on sunset, no one was in site so I quickly found the cache and signed the log. Thanks GabGab. Nice one!! Very Happy

Finally found this after a DNF a few months ago. No wonder I didn't find it, I was on the opposite side of the bridge last time. The GPS had me out by 4 mtrs, as this is a new GPS from last time, I will never know the exact issue.
Thanks for the hide, and a muggle free moment to Log this one

Thanks for the story, it's one my girls liked when they were younger. An appopriate cache hide too, found easily enough without resorting to the hint for a change Smile A good day for a run along the creek - the geese here are much less agressive than those I found in Riddells Creek last week! Thanks.

First for the afternoon following a karate grading my students were attending. Told the 3yo this was the billy goats and troll bridge, and she was scared the troll would get her, until I reminded her how the story ended... and assured her the goats had gone home too.

Took bubbles, left coloured pencils.

I said I'd be back over winter, and today I had some spare time to nab this one. The updated hint certainly made things easier for me, and the find was quick and painless. What a wonderful area at this time of year. Many thanks to GabGab for giving me a reason to see the ducks again today. TNLN.

I did a check of this for GabGab on the way home from work and I'm pleased to say that the cache is still in place.
A few more details have been added to the hint to make it easier to find.

05-Jul-10
I'll check this one for GabGab shortly.

05-Jul-10
Might wish to check this out. Is it still there?

Looked in all the easy and also the hard spots, could not feel anything or see anything. The garden has grown up up it is hard to get a hand deep into a few hiding spots. It might be there but would now be not accessible.

Did an unplanned cache run in the area today, and unfortunately missed getting to this one. Next time.

29-May-10
We arrived at this cache just as the sun was setting.
I started looking around without reading the hint using only my mobile phone light for a torch as I had left it in the car.
*beep* phone goes flat, just as I'm reading the hint - annoying!
I gave it a good hard look without a torch, but couldn't come up with the goods. We'll be back one day to log this as a find...

I decided to drop in and try for this one on my way to some of c@w's volcano caches out west. Being summer time, I wasn't too keen to stick my hands into places that I couldn't see, so I decided to give up on this one, and come back during winter when I feel a bit safer. Still, it look slike a lovely area, so thanks for bringing me here, GabGab. I'll be back again in about six months' time! Smile

Found by Bob at 1045

I was on my way out to the event at Merrimu Reservoir this morning and, as is my habit, wanted to break the journey by getting a few caches on the way. I've done virtually all the caches out this way by now, so thought I'd approach from the north and get a few more of c@w's volcano caches and, also, have a go at this one too. I was a bit concerned that an, apparently, easy cache had, as its last log, a dnf by an experienced team - so I'd read the hint and was prepared for a tricky hide - or even a dnf. As it turned out, the cache was extremely well concealed, especially since its been a while since its last find, but it was right where the hint indicated and was really quite a quickie - although it did take a bit of manoeuvring to actually extract it.

TNLN

Thanks GabGab - I thought I might see you and your Dad at the event (as I logged a couple of caches after this that he'd visited just before me) but I guess you couldn't make it.

Hi GabGab
Thank you for retelling the story of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff for me today. I will read it out to our 3 grandchildren Piper, Angus & Jedd when we next see them.
I found a couple of Dad’s CCCC cunning series yesterday but your cache was too tricky for me. I know some of the logs talk about a clever hide but I hope it is still there.
We will try again next time we are in the area.

Really enjoyed navigating the streets to get close to GZ. Once we had found a nearby parking spot we walked the short distance to the Trolls hiding spot. After a quick search the sneaky hiding spot was found. Many thanks Gab Gab for a great cache.

This is the first day that we joined Geocacaching, and went searcing for our first Cache, which was this one!

It was defiately a challenge, but in the end we succeeded.

Thank-you very much Gab Gab.

This was a tough one to find in the dark. I needed to ask someone very close to Gabgab for some help. Lucky, was it was very well hidden and jammed into its hidey hole. Maybe the troll was holding onto it.

Amazing to see the lake and all the houses surrounding it. When I lived in Melton, more than 20 years ago, this was swampy farmland full of thistles.

Thank you for a great cache Gabgab

Found by Roma and Max.
We are now back in suburbia surrounded by some very impressive dwellings.
These relatively new developments have provided some very suitable hiding places for geocaches, and this is certainly one of them.
We TNLN & SL.
Thank you GabGab for this cache and for bringing us here.

Thanks Gab Gab, a very well hidden cache. Loved looking at all the houses in the area that we could never afford, especially the one a couple of streets over with a turret!

Cached & Wackys from SA.

Found with Cached on a long weekend run to Victoria – TFTC!

I did this just after 3:30. I was surprised at how many muggle school kids walked, no slowly ambled by.

With no muggles, and a good read of the notes, it would have been a quick find. But it took me ages to get a break.

Thanks for a really well stocked cache.

Smile

A nice spot although seeing it in the dark can be a bit of a problem. Also seeing approaching muggles can be a problem too. Lucky we can still hear.
Thanks Gab Gab

My first GCA cache and one that very nearly had us muggled from the first. We were there in the dark and we heard footsteps coming. After determining that it wasn't a Billy goat we hurried our logging and got out of there.
Very nice Gab Gab

We were cacheing late at night. I was driving and Chewin' was navigating (but that is another story!).
He only read out the bit about where to find the cache, and I said that I was not driving any further until I heard GabGab's story!
Great story, nice cache.
Thanks, Robmc.

Today the wind huffed and puffed and in between the rain and hail showers I grabbed your little cache without troubling the trolls that lurk nearby. I did however have to watch for the skool kids on their way home. TNLN. Thanks GabGab for your cache.

Found by s-Facit and the Facit-Family around 2:00pm

s-Facit was keen to try for a FTF on GabGab's first cache but distance and a busy time of year for the Facit-Family meant that it was some weeks before we could attempt it.

Arrived at GZ and s-Facit & e-Facit were quickly into find mode. Looked in a few logically places before finding the carefully hidden container. s-Facit's enthusiasm in opening the box almost cost us a few swaps but Mrs Facit's lightening quick reflexes retrieved the escaping rubber ball Wink Moved to a more suitable area and completed swaps and log.

Took YoYo
Left Lizard Toy, Stickers, dog toy

Thanks GabGab, we really enjoyed your first cache

Found by caughtatwork at 17:00
Returning home after an afternoon caching, we stopped past this cache to see whether the rest of the caughtatwork family could find the cache without any hints from GabGab or caughtatwork.
With Mrs. caughtatwork in charge of the GPSr we had to wait for the odd muggle to pass and she pounced on what she thought was the cache only get to get a runner full of swamp. Ha! Nothing there.
She threw us a dirty look and proceeded to check a few more places before coming across the cache no too much longer.
Too nothing, left nothing,
Thanks GabGab. It was a great cache to be had and there were many ducks around this afternoon.

Hi GabGab, Pickupfamily Dad was the first to find your cache on Sunday at 12:20pm. I made no swaps, but the story reminded me of when I played "3 Billy Goats Gruff" on a tree that was shaped like a bridge in front of Grandma's houses when I was young. Well done on creating your first cache and thank you for the fun it provided me.
