Description

[Machines of War] Eternal Flame is the 65th cache hidden by caughtatwork.

The Eternal Flame burns outside the front of the Altona Council Chamber and Civic Centre on Civic Parade in Altona.

Another of the features at this location is one of the various Machines of War that have served their country well and have now been retired.

I am unsure of what this particular machine is named, however its use is obvious and in its heyday its destructive capability would have been astounding.

You are seeking a small 200ml sistem container hidden upon the Machine of War.

The cache is MIA. As this was a very daring hide, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Thanks to everyone who found the cache during its nearly 8 year lifespan.

07-May-14
Well it looks like this one may be missing. Temporarily disabled until I can check it out.

07-May-14
Lunchtime obviously isn't the best time for this one. I still managed to have a pretty good poke around before the muggles really became a problem bit no find today.

11-Jan-14
Somewhat quiet early on a Saturday morning, but after searching and searching, I had to admit defeat. Stuck my hands in all sorts of spots, but alas, I obviously missed it...

Thanks anyway....will be back here one day for sure.....

Highly exposed Shocked
It was a challenge to get this one when there was nobody at the roundabout or in the carpark! Have done other cannon caches that were just micros, this is a very daring cache. Thanks!

Found by Melbourne fire brigade crew while attending a job @ Civic centre. Needs a repaint !

This cache was found on a day out in Altona testing the new hiking boots.

It is quite rare that I find GCA caches however the few that I did today have raised my opinion on them after finding some very poor, cheap GCA caches to start off with (traditionals, not the RibbitRibbitRibbitRibbit . They were awesome Very Happy ). Anyway, it was also ironic how I was finding this cache today and ANZAC day is fast approaching. Lest we forget. Anyway, the cache was found within a few seconds of being at GZ. A nice hide in a nice spot for a cache. Thanks for bringing me here and proving that GCA caches can be very good Very HappyVery Happy

On approach to this one my immediate thought was "oh no! another gun cache!", having had plenty of trouble in the past in finding micros on these machines!

But, being a small gave us more hope and the hint narrowed it down a lot. Still, we followed the hint and couldn't locate it. Then we stepped back and ilovedrwho suddenly spotted it. Highly exposed and not where the hint indicated it should be.... So, we signed and then returned it hopefully in a more intended location - but might be worth checking up. Given that the CO was present during the last find I'm not sure what's happened, but where we found it seemed way too exposed to be the proper hide.

For us a surprising civic area, although P-P now recalls having been here many years ago in another guise. A quick find (not like most of these devices for us), and we were on our way after looking at closely at the flame.

Swapped PathTag . . SL . . Thanks for the hunt caughtatwork.

Tonight I was out with caching buddies jsmyong55 and The Physics Teacher. After meeting at Swinburne we took the West Gate Freeway to head out to Williamstown to pick up a few DNF’s from last week as well as continue on. The weather kept clear for us, but the wind was biting.

We had 41 caches on the list, and while we pulled up stumps at cache 33 we did bag a number on the way back to Hawthorn so that the Physics Teacher could get over 40 caches for the night. J and I had already collected these. Not bad in 6.5 hours.

In the torchlight I spotted this one from 5 metres away so I had it in hand before the others could arrive. Log quickly signed and we moved on silently. Nice peaceful spot. Thanks.

Monday night seems to be a usual run for trailrunning and I nowadays. This time, we had Physics Teacher on board with us. We met up at Swinburne to begin our run. Traffic wasn't looking as good on Westgate but we went ahead with the plan. We had 41 on our list but we called quits after it was getting late and really chilly the later it got. I must remember to bring a jacket next time. Thank goodness it didn't rain, that would only make things worst.

It was a pretty good run I must say, with 34 in the bag tonight and many more for the Physics Teacher along the way back. Not bad considering we had to walk quite a distance for some of them.

We've enjoyed the caches off this series and was happy to get another one of them tonight. It was an easy find for trailrunning and we were off after a quick sign. TFTC Smile

This cache is the closest GCA cache to my home location so thought I'd better check it out. The log book is a bit all over the place with random pages used but all in good order. Signed and placed back, thanks.

I hate micros on guns, so was pleased that this was a small until I somehow still had trouble finding it for a while.

Thanks.

First cache of the day. A quick find and a lovely area. TFTC

20-Apr-10
Found easiliy, not easy to retrieve though. The constant traffic, both cars and peds made an interesting log.

The machine might have had a new coat recently, very shiny. Either the painter missed a bit near the container, or they are caachers themselves.

TFTC. The area looks all ready for the upcoming ANZAC day service.

'Lest We Forget'.

Found this fella after visitig my local Laptop repair man.

Interesting spot to visit, would imagine the ANZAC day service there would be good (sat and thought for a worthwhile word to express what i wanted to say but really couldnt think of anything)

Thanks Cheers Gordo

I was down at the council offices the other week, but had completely forgotten about this cache. Today I had the information, and with a long history of grovelling around on Guns, it was a quick find.

Found at 1.40pm on a raining Sunday. Considering I grew up in Altona the return visit was great. Used the 'old take a photograph' for the attention of the few muggles driving past.

Found by Bob at 1540

The last time I visited Cherry Lake, I can remember admiring this gun (I always admire them - I lust for explosions and noise BwaHaHa!) and it wasn't until I got home and did some subsequent checking, that I realized there was a GCA cache hidden there and I was rather annoyed at myself for not being fully prepared. Anyway, I resolved to make sure I got it next time I was in the area - and today was the day. Things were pretty quiet and I had surprisingly little trouble locating the cache (I've done a fair few of these, and they can be tricky!) - but the magnet was a goodie, and it made a decent clunk when I replaced it and I was fearful that the only muggle in sight (a kid near a car 50m away) might have heard. I was out of sight though, and didn't seem to provoke any attention and I was soon on my way.

TNLN

Thanks again caughtatwork

Found 10.25am
We usually find that caching on a Monday is easier than a weekend as the muggle factor is usually lower, but not with this one. So many windows and probably a worker behind each one wondering what those 2 people are doing walking over our nice manicured lawn !!!

We were lucky to find the cache in the second place we looked so we were able to quickly sign the log and return it before the hoards ran out shouting at us .....

TNLNSL
Thanks C@W for another in this series of GCA caches.

Found at 5.06pm while in the area this afternoon for work. Nice to see the flame burning nearby and the cache was a bold size for this bit of machinery of war which usually attracts a micro. Thanks caught at work.

31-Dec-07
Nice and easy to find. Found with pwags and lna. A lot of passing traffic here so it was good that it was nearly dark. We were impressed with the method of affixing the container!

31-Dec-07
Found on new-year's eve (with colldier and lna), 20:30. Left another dinosaur to keep the 3 others happy, and took Miss Piggy!

7.00pm
Found by Roma and Max.
Our 17th and final find on our search only for GCA caches day.
The caliber of all our finds today have been as good as, and certainly even better than some that we have experienced, when searching for .com hides. Not wanting to be controversial or take sides, all of these hides have done for us exactly what we enjoy most about Geocaching, brought us to interesting venues, cunning hides and most of all the enjoyment of making a find.
Thank you C@W for this cache and all the others of yours we found today.
Romax.
