Description

[Machines of War] The Sunbury Gun is the 67th cache hidden by caughtatwork

The Sunbury Gun was presented to the Shire of Bulla in 1922.

"On Tuesday last the Hon. Russell Clarke M.L.C. officially handed over to the Bulla Shire Council the gun which bears the following inscription on a brass plate :-
Presented to Janet Lady Clarke by the Government of Victoria (Defence Dept) as a memento of the last Sir W. J. Clarke's patriotic action in regard to the maintenance of the Rupertswood Battery of Horse Artilley Oct. 4th 1897".

The Machine of War itself is an Armstrong 12 pounder, sliding block, screw breach, rifle bore weapon.

This type of gun was the first wrought iron gun as well as the first breech loading artillery and first rifled gun used in the British Service.

The cache iteself is hidden as close as is possible to the Machine of War without being attached to the machine as the machine itself it behind glass to protect it from the elements.

It is placed such that you do NOT have to step on any plants at all and you do not have to leave the grass in order to find the cache. If you think you may have a hard time searching, please refer to the hint which is quite detailed.

The cache is a 200ml sistema container containing the usual log book and pen as well as a small assortment of small swaps and has been disguised somewhat to match the surroundings.

I hope you enjoy viewing the Machine of War.

Hmmmmm . . . . old logs are sometimes worth reading - see ours for 28 Mar 2008.

I was in Sunbury today for some caching and stopped past here for a look as to whether the cache was there or not.
I know you're all going to hate this, but yes the cache was in place.
It was well hidden by the ever expanding agapanthus roots, so to avoid the plants being disturbed I have removed it.
As such, this cache and location now come to an end unless someone else can use this mighty machine of war in a future cache placement.

Well, if it can't be found with a GAFF 5, the only thing is for me to head out and check it. I'll try that as soon as possible. It may be gone, it may have moved, it may still be there. Who knows what the future may bring.

28-Mar-11
This remains to be our closest unfound GCA cache. Our visit today was prompted by a GAFF5 hint from the CO but we could still not find the @%^ thing. We hope it's still there!!!

Thanks anyway C@W

1955. Pleasant place and I noted the war memorial area was nicely refurbished in time for Remembrance Day. Ours was a cursory look during a walk in the drizzle. Found a likely spot but no. We'll focus on it more during a future evening stroll.

28-Nov-10
When we came to look for this cache, there was a removal van parked nearby and a lady sitting in her car staring straight at us!
We gave a peripheral look, but couldn't see it without rearrange the plants.
Thanks anyways Caughtatwork, another time.

Nup, sucks to be me.

Didnt want to damage the garden bed after a gentle look failed to reveal the cache I let this one be today.

31-Aug-10
Yay! Finally found this one after several attempts. Was well covered and I bet I had my hand on it at least once or twice previously without realising.

15-Aug-10
Checked this one out today. Yes it is still there. Cachers will have to look a little harder. Razz

26-Jul-10
I really like seeing these things and reading the history adds to the experience of this one. No cache found, though I did not spend too much time digging about. Thanks for showing me the gun.

15-Jul-10
Had another look today, and reading past logs saying it was deeper than expected, dug my fingers deep in the ground. I only found plant roots, and relatively undisturbed soil.

10-Jun-10
By the time I had waited a short distance away for a memorial gathering to disperse and a crocodile of kinder kids walk by, the 3 yo was VERY bored. Managed a decent dig, but may not have been far enough north I think. Will try again next time I am in the area.

28-Feb-10
Had no problem finding. Was a little wet inside. Tried to dry out a little & put back making sure that all was well sealed & tight, as could be.

24-Jan-10
No luck for me today.

16-Jan-10
Passed by this cache on the way back from Bendigo and it's still there in the correct spot.

04-Jan-10
This is not the first time we have looked for this one and despite having a good 20 mins searching we still can not find it. We are not saying that the cache is not there but we just can not find it.

Thanks anyway C@W and thanks for taking the long trip out to find ours the other day.

18-Nov-09
While in the area we had a little look for this cache. Unfortunately about 2 mins after we arrived someone pulled up in their car and just sat there. We went and did the nearby micro and came back to find them still in the car and eating a sandwich so we gave it a miss. Nice spot though.

14-Nov-09
Well it wasn't precisely where it was supposed to be, and a horde of muggle types started to accumulate outside the hall adjacent to the gun, so I couldn't really hook into the agapanthus or whatever they were like a starving wart hog with all those people watching, so I'll have to call this a DNF until I'm next in Sunbury.

28-Jun-09
This was our very first cache find, we found it on Sunday around 5pm, no-one else in sight. Quite easy to find, though buried deeper than we imagined. We often visit the gun and the war memorial, so it was fun to find that it had an extra secret.
The container had water inside but the contents of the plastic bag were dry. Took nothing, left R2D2 and bracelet.

Looked and felt and rummaged, but, alas, no joy. Used the hint and spent a fair amount of time searcing but was forced to abandon as the clouds started leaking on me.

Did enjoy the story of the gun, though.

Thanks C@W for another CGA cache.

No sign of any works around GZ and the cache is in place and ready to be found (as though anyone will find a GCA cache anyway).

Warning: Men at work!
The cache is inside a construction fence at the moment.

Ahhh...at last I can rest.
Found without any trouble.
Thank you for placement of the "new" cache.

Drat. Had the clues and everything but not the latest logs from the weekend. Drove past, looked as per the clue and even investigated the new mulch but maybe didn't dig deep enough. One for another visit.

03-Aug-08
Thanks for the DNF log The Riddellers. It alerted me to the potential of a missing cache and after an exchange of information and pictures I visited the area this morning. The cache had indeed gone missing, but expecting the worst, I took along a replacement and er, um, replaced it. It's in exactly the same spot, maybe a little deeper under the mulch, but the new mulch over the cache should be a give-away.

30-Jul-08
OK...I give up!
Maybe i'm just not looking hard enough, but, after months of intermittent searches of the site I think I have exhausted all the options I have, clue included.
Short of getting a metal detector (just in case there is something metal in the cache) or taking a gardening job with the local council so I can dig the garden bed over, I cannot find this cache!!!
Do you know how frustrating that is.
Can someone prove me wrong, find the cache and provide me some proof of its existance. Take a photo or take me there and show it to me.
Thanks, The Riddeller

Found on our Good Friday Sunbury Search at 11.20am. A lot of people nearby at the special church service in a temporary marquee, but their attention was on proceedings there, so this was an easy find. Parking was a little more difficult, though! Thanks for another War Machine, caughtatwork!

23-Feb-08
The blue pen in the cache seems to have given up the ghost...

Found by Pickupfamily Dad 1900hrs after a FTF chase up this way on a gc.com cache. This find was harder than it should have been, even with the help of the hint. TNLN. TFTC caughtatwork.

Dropped into Sunbury this morning for a 6.30am find with not a soul around. The clue was instrumental in making this a very quick find. TNLN Thanks c@w, now off to another machine of war.

9.00pm
Found by Roma and Max.
Our first attempt this afternoon was thwarted by a function in the nearby hall with people coming and going. Although we had a quick search we were unable to locate this well hidden container.
We retired to our daughters for dinner and returned at 8.45pm. We only had to wait about 15 minutess for the last person to lock up and leave the hall before we could search without interruption. Having resorted to the hint in our earlier attempt we now made our find, wondering how we missed it the first time!
We left a Mondo Figurine and took a Finger Puppet.
Thanks again caughtatwork.
Romax.
