Description
The 74th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the site of an Urban Volcano.
Mount Atkinson is a dormant shield volcano right on the edge of the western suburbs of Melbourne.
A shield volcano occurs when magma is runny (not viscous) and gases can escape easily. These eruptions are not very explosive and lots of magma reaches the surface to form lava flows. This type of volcano makes a cone built up from layers of lava. Because the lava flows easily, the cone is broad and has a flattened dome-like shape.
If you take binoculars or have decent eyesight you will be able to see the butresses of lava that have cooled and solidified near the top of the cone.
Regrettably the cone of the volcano is on private property so you will not be able to get to the top of the dormant volcano, but as you approach the cache location you should be able to see the distinctive shield volcano shape.
If you have ever wondered why the western suburbs are so flat, you will be standing on the major reason.
The cache you seek is a 2 litre sistema container.
I hope you find the experience of being close to the slopes of an urban volcano interesting.

Logs
No runny lava about, but plenty of runny water. Two litres in the container, which was almost submerged in the pool. We couldn't sign the log but did attempt to drain the container.
TNLN . . . SL . . Thanks for the hunt caughtatwork.
Thanks for the continuing geological tour of the country.
The Riddeller.
The cache has now been replaced in the same location, but is now a clear 2 litre sistema.
I suppose you could call this an upgrade
This cache has been damaged by a grader that has gone along the fence line. I have taped it closed for the moment.
Thanks for the series of volcanoes around this area.
Jeff
Off to Bacchus Marsh. A few local cars travel rather ast along here.
The cache has been damaged by a grader that shifted a rock. @ of the 4 clips are broken and the lid will not stay on. I have wrapped it closed with electrical tape, it will do for a little while. The next finder will need to re-wrap.
TFTC
All is well with container, no water regardless of the missing clips.

After waiting for several weeks for a suitable day to take off from work, today looked like it was going to be ok and I headed off on my caching tour of the Brisbane Ranges. It's nice to pick up a few easy ones on the way to break up a long trip, so I took the opportunity of visiting some of these Urban Volcano sites - which I'd previously passed up on a couple of other occasions for various reasons. No troubles with this one and I rather enjoyed the long, straight dirt roads around here.

Thanks caughtatwork
Another in the series that really makes you aware of the geological events that shaped this part of the land. You would certainly drive by without being aware of this feature if not for C@W and GCA
The container was well and truly weathered in after the elapsed time from the last find but all is well despite a couple of clips missing. The rock on top should maintain the seal
TNLN
Our thanks to c@w for this cache and the informative series

Another nice easy find thanks C@W, with ome nice views.
Cheers, TFTC.
Found by Roma and Max.
Another easy drive by, placed strategically between the local inhabitants dwellings!
This time we took a Tape Measure to make room for a Mondo.
Once again our thanks C@W, for establishing this hide.
From Romax.
Another area I found interesting with the information in the notes, that I would not have visited with out a cache.
And a well stocked cache. No swaps from me.

I am starting to be able to spot the lumps in the distance as we approche GZ. Managed to get covered in dust twice my high speed passing cars. Another well stocked cache with a view.
Took Bubbles (getting a colletion now)
Left A "Keeper of Time" + 3D Stickers

A replacement container has been placed in position with the same old log book for continuity.
Thank goodness there has been little rain recently otherwise everything would have been ruined.
Nice quick drive -by.

Thanks, Robmc.
