Description

The 74th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the site of an Urban Volcano.

Mount Atkinson is a dormant shield volcano right on the edge of the western suburbs of Melbourne.

A shield volcano occurs when magma is runny (not viscous) and gases can escape easily. These eruptions are not very explosive and lots of magma reaches the surface to form lava flows. This type of volcano makes a cone built up from layers of lava. Because the lava flows easily, the cone is broad and has a flattened dome-like shape.

If you take binoculars or have decent eyesight you will be able to see the butresses of lava that have cooled and solidified near the top of the cone.

Regrettably the cone of the volcano is on private property so you will not be able to get to the top of the dormant volcano, but as you approach the cache location you should be able to see the distinctive shield volcano shape.

If you have ever wondered why the western suburbs are so flat, you will be standing on the major reason.

The cache you seek is a 2 litre sistema container.

I hope you find the experience of being close to the slopes of an urban volcano interesting.

No runny lava about, but plenty of runny water. Two litres in the container, which was almost submerged in the pool. We couldn't sign the log but did attempt to drain the container.

Too many moved rocks spoil the cache.

Cache is saturated. A new log book is required.

07-Jan-12
The cache container is full of water and the log book unsignable I took a photo instead to log the find.

15-Dec-11
I didn't even attempt to write my find in the logbook as the cache container was half full of water and the logbook bag full too... I drained out the water as best I could but it really needs a replacement and the cache container itself needs repair/replacement or drainage works to the hide perhaps?... I hope you'll trust me that I really have found this one.

Easy find, but was totally full of water, cleaned up container and contents, log is drenched.sorry but I discarded a couple of things that could not be saved, Elecrical tape, small pkt of pencils that were now just like soggy cardboard and colored water and a pkt of hooks that were rusted together. Happily motoring along and spotted the volcano off to the left, so happily motored towards it. Then foolishly motored back to take the right road Smile Thanks.

Found and photographed.
Thanks for the continuing geological tour of the country.

Thanks for the maintenance log. It looks like grader has moved both the cache and the rock a couple of meters closer to the fence.
The cache has now been replaced in the same location, but is now a clear 2 litre sistema.
I suppose you could call this an upgrade Smile

I'll look into this one shortly.

C@W.
This cache has been damaged by a grader that has gone along the fence line. I have taped it closed for the moment.

Thanks for the series of volcanoes around this area.

Found this at 07:45
Off to Bacchus Marsh. A few local cars travel rather ast along here.

The cache has been damaged by a grader that shifted a rock. @ of the 4 clips are broken and the lid will not stay on. I have wrapped it closed with electrical tape, it will do for a little while. The next finder will need to re-wrap.

All is well with container, no water regardless of the missing clips.

Nice find on the treck out west, container is dry!!

So flat and dry out here this afternoon. A quick find, in a likely place. Contents were dry, but one of the clips is broken, so this container will need replacing at some stage in the future - no hurry, as the rock on top of the container is keeping it safely closed. Thanks for the cache, c@w!

Found by Bob at 1050

After waiting for several weeks for a suitable day to take off from work, today looked like it was going to be ok and I headed off on my caching tour of the Brisbane Ranges. It's nice to pick up a few easy ones on the way to break up a long trip, so I took the opportunity of visiting some of these Urban Volcano sites - which I'd previously passed up on a couple of other occasions for various reasons. No troubles with this one and I rather enjoyed the long, straight dirt roads around here.

TNLN

Thanks caughtatwork

Another in the series that really makes you aware of the geological events that shaped this part of the land. You would certainly drive by without being aware of this feature if not for C@W and GCA
The container was well and truly weathered in after the elapsed time from the last find but all is well despite a couple of clips missing. The rock on top should maintain the seal
TNLN
Our thanks to c@w for this cache and the informative series

This cache has had a near death experience. We found it exposed and with the lid clips half gone making it hard to reseal. A new container may be required.

Our final volcano cache for the day. Rhino98 was so excited by the gold plated possum in the cache, I had to find something in my bag to swap it with - one Jason Culina socceroos coin. Thank you for the fun series of cache C@W that me and my nephew enjoyed doing after school.

This time we took a Tape Measure to make room for a Mondo.
Once again our thanks C@W, for establishing this hide.

Another in the Urban volcano series. This one stood out from the car.

Another area I found interesting with the information in the notes, that I would not have visited with out a cache.

And a well stocked cache. No swaps from me.

I am starting to be able to spot the lumps in the distance as we approche GZ. Managed to get covered in dust twice my high speed passing cars. Another well stocked cache with a view.

Thanks for the notification anthonyandheather.
A replacement container has been placed in position with the same old log book for continuity.
Thank goodness there has been little rain recently otherwise everything would have been ruined.

24-Sep-07
Easy find, however recent roadworks have all but destroyed the container. Tried to place container in a way to avoid further damage but a new container would certainly be nice. Did not have any replacements on me. Sorry

It was a glorious day to be out discovering some of the interesting humps and bumps in the Great Western Plain: it isn't as flat as I thought. TNLN. TFBMH (thanks for bringing me here).

I think Deringer need to learn how to make a Mountain cache like this. It was tough, but we made it to the top (I think, we weren't too sure where the top was Smile).
Thanks, Robmc.
