Description
The 77th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the site of an Urban Volcano.
Round Hill is a dormant shield volcano right on the edge of the western suburbs of Melbourne.
A shield volcano occurs when magma is runny (not viscous) and gases can escape easily. These eruptions are not very explosive and lots of magma reaches the surface to form lava flows. This type of volcano makes a cone built up from layers of lava. Because the lava flows easily, the cone is broad and has a flattened dome-like shape.
Round Hill can no longer been seen as a hill as the majority of the slopes have been urbanised and built upon. The area to the north of the cache site which is fenced off forms the Broadcast Australia site for the former 3L0 (Victorian London Office) now 774 ABC Melbourne and ABC Victoria. The majority of the radio tower site is the northern slope of Round Hill. The actual eruption point is less distinct but is located somewhere around the Melbourne Water storage tanks about 200-300m east from the cache location.
I wonder whether the people living in this area are aware that they are living on the slopes of a dormant volcano?
If you have ever wondered why the western suburbs are so flat, you will be standing on the major reason.
The cache you seek is a 200ml sistema container. You do not have to enter any garden area to access the cache. It is easily accessible from the concrete footpath.
I hope you find the experience of standing of an eruption site of an urban volcano interesting.

Thanks anyway caughtatwork....
Glad easy find with hint.
Thanks caughtatwork for the cache
I apologise to all the CO’s for using a generic log but after the 130+ caches for the day for me I’m too exhausted to even think of writing an individual log for each. Thanks to each and every one of you.
EVENING FOOD STOP!
What happened here a long time ago is similar to what happens to my belly after eating the close-by product.
Amazing where volcanoes are located, as mentioned in the notes, I dont think many people know about this site. I didn't until I geocached.
Thanks for the history lesson about this local area.

GCA Cache # 13
@ 9pm.
Our last cache for the night.
Did not know that this many people come to Micky D's at 9pm on a Sunday night and sit in the carpark.
Plenty of people around that easily looked more dodgy then us.

I love these types of caches, probably why I like caching in the city most! Thanks for bringing me here! BTW - Imagine how many people are here at 9pm on a Sunday night! Very busy!

Felt a bit exposed so I made it snappy and quick.
I cannot see much of a volcano here but the antenna in the paddock looks smaller up close!

It was raining quite steadily by the time I arrived at this one and parked in the nearby carpark, so I didn't have to worry about foot-muggles too much and I guess all those in cars couldn't have cared less about my untied shoelaces or why I was having so much trouble getting them tied properly. Another cache with a very interesting theme to it - who would have thought this was once a volcanic cone (it sure doesn't look like one now) and how did you come across this little pearl of information anyway?

Thanks again caughtatwork
You are certainly correct that it is very hard to pick the area as a volcano but an interesting location none the less.
Had to ignore those hundreds of car born potential muggles on this one and just go for it
A quick stop over and one of those soft serve ice creams Romax enjoys and it's off to the next c@w cache

Our thanks to c@w for the cache

Second time looking for this cache and this time the ground cover had been pruned back making the hiding spot easy to find. Very interesting information about this area C@W, it's difficult to imagine the amount of volcanic activity that took place here.

Arrived at GZ and used the provided car park to approach GZ, started looking the wrong way but soon were more on track (the hint helps you get focus!). s-facit found the cache and after a quick log we were on our way
Thanks caughtatwork, we did spend some time discussing the volcano but it's just not as exciting as a 10,000 foot high mountain spewing lava
Thank you caughtatwork
Found by Roma and Max.
This proved to be a very opportune venue to find a cache, clean up after a long mornings searching, and enjoy some repast, although these places aren’t usually our preferred eating spots, with the exception we do enjoy their soft serve ice creams!
We TNLN & SL.
Thank you C@W for this very enjoyable series and for all the challenges you have offered us today.
Romax.
thanks c@w
took shark
left panda puppet(found in city of the dead)
A lot of people around - so had to be discreet.
Thanks again Caught@work.
We are off to find the next one.
A little bit of advice - don't stray from the path, J found a nasty, sharp thing (syringe) under a rock in the middle of the garden.
Took the blue frog and left the great white shark.
