Description

The 77th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the site of an Urban Volcano.

Round Hill is a dormant shield volcano right on the edge of the western suburbs of Melbourne.

A shield volcano occurs when magma is runny (not viscous) and gases can escape easily. These eruptions are not very explosive and lots of magma reaches the surface to form lava flows. This type of volcano makes a cone built up from layers of lava. Because the lava flows easily, the cone is broad and has a flattened dome-like shape.

Round Hill can no longer been seen as a hill as the majority of the slopes have been urbanised and built upon. The area to the north of the cache site which is fenced off forms the Broadcast Australia site for the former 3L0 (Victorian London Office) now 774 ABC Melbourne and ABC Victoria. The majority of the radio tower site is the northern slope of Round Hill. The actual eruption point is less distinct but is located somewhere around the Melbourne Water storage tanks about 200-300m east from the cache location.

I wonder whether the people living in this area are aware that they are living on the slopes of a dormant volcano?

If you have ever wondered why the western suburbs are so flat, you will be standing on the major reason.

The cache you seek is a 200ml sistema container. You do not have to enter any garden area to access the cache. It is easily accessible from the concrete footpath.

I hope you find the experience of standing of an eruption site of an urban volcano interesting.

Regrettably the cache is no more. It seems that it has gone missing, so rather than try to replace it here (where there is nothing to see of the old volcano nowadays anyway), I'll archive it.

Not sure if it was the bad weather or just bad searching on my behalf, but reading the hint I thought I was a good chance with this one, but alas, I couldn't see it. Was sort of hoping the volcano might erupt while I was there.....certainly would have been a tad warmer!!!!

Thanks anyway caughtatwork....

Found it after work nearby in the late evening.
Glad easy find with hint.
Thanks caughtatwork for the cache

Finding myself in Footscray early in the morning I decided to beat the heat and tackle the rest of this series. First stop Round Hill - a very urban volcano! Forgot to check the hint at first so search took a little longer than I wanted, but it was soon in hand and logged. Dropped it back again, and walked back to the car, to hear a car honking its horn as it went past me - I'm guessing geocachers in the know, but we'll see! TFTC

A huge day of caching that started in the wee hours of the morning and ended at about 9:30pm with one exhausted trail runner. I had agreed to pick up my caching buddy jsmyong55 at a reasonable hour and when we had finished he and he had added another 120 caches or so to his tally. It was a nice way to end our partnership as J is heading back to Malaysia soon. It will be hard to find someone to cache with that can fill his shoes.

I apologise to all the CO’s for using a generic log but after the 130+ caches for the day for me I’m too exhausted to even think of writing an individual log for each. Thanks to each and every one of you.

EVENING FOOD STOP!

Lucky for the hint otherwise this would be a tuff one, in such a busy spot. Found quickly. SLTNLT T4TC

Found this morning whilst in the area for work. thanks for the clue as it would have been a bit tricky without it, especially near such a busy intersection. thanks to caughtatwork tnln.

A cache outside my favourite eatery. Liar-liar I haven't consumed this product since a midnight stop on the Hume near Wangaratta 15 months ago.
What happened here a long time ago is similar to what happens to my belly after eating the close-by product.
Amazing where volcanoes are located, as mentioned in the notes, I dont think many people know about this site. I didn't until I geocached.
Thanks for the history lesson about this local area.

Steadily working my way around the volcano series, and appreciating the places it's taking me. Volcano? Anyone see a volcano?! Ahh, progress! Thanks.

Last find for the afternoon with 3yo in tow. Stopped at the golden arches "on the way home" for a babycino and hot choc, and grabbed this before getting back in the car.

On arrival here I parked right next to GZ. Initially I took the clue rather laterally and was deep in the trenches. I was about to give up and then tried a different approach and there it was. tftc!!

GCA Cache # 13
@ 9pm.
Our last cache for the night.
Did not know that this many people come to Micky D's at 9pm on a Sunday night and sit in the carpark.
Plenty of people around that easily looked more dodgy then us.

I love these types of caches, probably why I like caching in the city most! Thanks for bringing me here! BTW - Imagine how many people are here at 9pm on a Sunday night! Very busy!

After a fine morning caching on the way to work it was only fitting that a cache be had on the return journey.
Felt a bit exposed so I made it snappy and quick.
I cannot see much of a volcano here but the antenna in the paddock looks smaller up close!

Found by Bob at 1400

It was raining quite steadily by the time I arrived at this one and parked in the nearby carpark, so I didn't have to worry about foot-muggles too much and I guess all those in cars couldn't have cared less about my untied shoelaces or why I was having so much trouble getting them tied properly. Another cache with a very interesting theme to it - who would have thought this was once a volcanic cone (it sure doesn't look like one now) and how did you come across this little pearl of information anyway?

TNLN

Thanks again caughtatwork

Found by one half of Team Ladava around 1.00 pm on a rare day our caching by myself while the other half lay in bed with the flu. Plan A was that we would be half way to Adelaide by now on a week's Geocaching holiday. Oh well there is always plan B.
You are certainly correct that it is very hard to pick the area as a volcano but an interesting location none the less.
Had to ignore those hundreds of car born potential muggles on this one and just go for it
A quick stop over and one of those soft serve ice creams Romax enjoys and it's off to the next c@w cache
TNLN
Our thanks to c@w for the cache

Found at 11.30am

Second time looking for this cache and this time the ground cover had been pruned back making the hiding spot easy to find. Very interesting information about this area C@W, it's difficult to imagine the amount of volcanic activity that took place here.

Found 28/12/08 1143 Smile. The nearby venue d'Arche provided a convenient parking spot for the Facitmobile and while we were all looking in different locations s-facit spotted the cache Smile

Found by Facitman and the Facit-Family at 11:43
Arrived at GZ and used the provided car park to approach GZ, started looking the wrong way but soon were more on track (the hint helps you get focus!). s-facit found the cache and after a quick log we were on our way
Thanks caughtatwork, we did spend some time discussing the volcano but it's just not as exciting as a 10,000 foot high mountain spewing lava Big Grin

Found by Roma and Max.
This proved to be a very opportune venue to find a cache, clean up after a long mornings searching, and enjoy some repast, although these places aren’t usually our preferred eating spots, with the exception we do enjoy their soft serve ice creams!
We TNLN & SL.
Thank you C@W for this very enjoyable series and for all the challenges you have offered us today.

Bit busy for a Friday afternoon and didn't want to get caught! Tried to find but felt like I was being watched.....will attempt another day.

12-Jan-07
Found a small cache - didn't take anything as we didn't have anything small enough to fit.
A lot of people around - so had to be discreet.
Thanks again Caught@work.
We are off to find the next one.

Dropped in here today on my way to Melbourne, finding this, the first of three c@w caches in the hour. An easy find once the clue had been decrypted. thanks c@w TNLN

The fourth in our quest to write our name on the first page of each volcano log book. This one proved to be the trickiest of the lot - J spent a lot of time "tying his shoelaces".

A little bit of advice - don't stray from the path, J found a nasty, sharp thing (syringe) under a rock in the middle of the garden.

Took the blue frog and left the great white shark.
