Description

The 78th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the site of an Urban Volcano.

Greek Hill is a dormant composite lava / scoria volcano right on the edge of the western suburbs of Melbourne.

A composite volcano creates a steep volcanic cone built by both lava flows and pyroclastic eruptions.

A pyroclastic eruption is an eruption where fragmented (clastic) rock material is ejected from a volcanic vent. Scoria is a bomb-size (> 64 mm) pyroclast that is irregular in form and generally very vesicular. It is usually heavier, darker, and more crystalline than pumice.

Greek Hill is defined by the Geological Society of Australia as a volcano of local significance. It's certainly of significance to the family who live almost on top of the eruption point. I wonder if they know what they're living on?

Regrettably the cone of the volcano is on private property so you will not be able to get to the top of the dormant volcano, but as you approach the cache location you should be able to see the distinctive volcano shape.

At the cache location you should be able see the rocky outcroppings which are left over from the last major eruption. The majority of the roads that you would have followed to get to this cache are lined with ejecta from the various domant volcanos around this area.

If you have ever wondered why the western suburbs are so flat, you will be standing on the major reason.

The cache you seek is a 400ml sistema container.

I hope you find the experience of being close to the slopes of an urban volcano interesting.

Logs

The location is not too spectacular and with the maintenance challenge of the cache location (as well as the potential damage to the rock wall fence), this cache is being archived.

23-Feb-11
Cache must have sat in water for a while, the logbook is unloggable.

23-Feb-11
There are quite a few places for sale on the roads to get here... next development area? Log book unusable, the hiding place seems to catch a lot of water. Almost got them all! Thanks.

28-Dec-10
Log Book is Saturated and VERY Slimy, unusable.

Final one for the day, but unfortunately also very slimey and unable to write in log.

Found the cache but did not sign the log as the container was full of water, and muddy. Drained as much water as I could from the cache.

Should have waited another 3 weeks and logged it as 6 mo unloved cache! Very Happy TLNN DSL TFTC

Last log of the day.
It was getting late and I was getting further from home so I was hoping for a driveby. And quick it was.
The log is a bit damp but I could still write on it.
Looks like someone is building on the top of the hill.

Finally found this. 20mins of looking in the place I shouldn't have. I need a GPS that can store the GPX file. but will that take away the fun of looking and looking.

Thaks for the drive out here, it is in my backyard and I purchased a cubby-house just down the road for the kids.

Found this one tonight on way home.

Really enjoy exploring the back-roads around here.

I was a bit worried at first as there seemed to have been recent work done around gz, with a few sods turned over where I expected to find the cache. Luckily the cache was well protected in its hide.

The cache must have been inundated with water in the heavy rains a few weeks back, as it had some water in it, the log bok was a bit damp, but not unusable.

Cheers Gordo

Nice little drive by, this looks like an interesting hill - not as interesting as one we find a little later! LOL

After a little trip to Geelong, we stopped past here to make amends for the wet log book. It seems that the plastic bag had been caught in the seal some time in the past which had let in water. I've removed all the swaps and replaced the bag and book. This should make some more room in the cache so it can close without having the bag trapped.

Nice easy to find on way to Mt Cottrell but the log needs to be replaced.

Found just after lunch. log book still very wet... this was my first find today and hoping for another 3. geo doggie had fun running up and down the rocky road. easy find, thanks for the clue. took bouncy ball. left "100" chip.

Soaked log book - will need replacing.

Another quick find this afternoon, using the hint to help me. Unfortunately, the log book is soaked and slimy - looks like this cache may have been underwater during the recent heavy rains. I managed to scrall my name in the soggy book, but it will need replacing. I'll submit a "needs maintenance" log now. Thanks c@w!

This was my 2nd of 28 caches for the day and was an easy find - although the retrieval was quite difficult and I had to do some carefule manoeuvring of the covering rocks to manage the extraction. The cache sits slightly below ground level and a lot of water must pool around it and it was pretty soggy inside. I managed to make a log entry ok and I guess it will dry out in time if we don't continue to get the good falls of rain we've been having the last few weeks.

Thanks again caughtatwork

Spent ten minutes listening to my nephew saying, checking under here, I think it's this one, and what's this? several times over. In the end we resorted to the clue and realised we were off the mark. No swap - admired tiny remnant of volcano and headed off.

Found by Roma and Max.
We are managing to maintain 15min intervals between our finds even though we did have a smidgeon of a problem removing this container from its niche.
However persistence paid off in the end.

Easy find without to much difficulty. Geobaby enjoyed the drive.

On a dry sunny afternoon I found this my penultimate volcano cache. The logbook is just a tad damp now but quite useable and I dried it out a touch more before moving on. Thanks c@w.

09-Sep-07
Thanks for the advice about the logbook. I was able to get out there today and dried it out in the sun and the breeze. Not quite good as new, but very usable to say the least.

08-Sep-07
I was distracted briefly by the large number of possible hiding spots (and was kicking myself for not having printed out the cache description), but then I found it. As noted in the log before, the logbook was rather wet. I tried to dry it out a bit in the sun on the dashboard, but I only alleviated a little of the dampness problem. I've separated the pages with some scraps of paper which I hope will help (I actually had a spare log book, but it wasn't small enough). Anyway, an interesting location -- the west must have been spectacular when these volcanoes were doing their stuff. TFTC.

Found this one in a rather soggy condition. Tried to dry it out the best we could, but unfortunately the log book was soaked through and through. Notified C@W - hopefully the log book can be resurrected.

Another steep hill in the flat plains of the western suburbs. Of course I got out and went straight for the rocks! This is our sunset cache (and cold it was).
Thanks, Robmc.

12-Jun-07
Found today just on sunset. Actually we had to wait from 5.00 to 5.30 for sunset and due to the clouds it wasn't as spectacular as I'd hoped. However back to the cache, it was interesting to read about it and learn a bit about the local area.
Thanks
