Description

This is the 2nd cache on the main island of New Caledonia.

I have visited this Port on a P&O cruise ship for the last 6 years and thought it was time it had a cache right at the Port for any visitors. It also marks my 2nd year of caching.

Noumea is the main port in the country and has french history. You will often find yourself asking a local "parlez vous Inglais" or "Do you speak English". It is an expensive place to visit, so we usually limit the trip to a quick look around town.

The cache is located at the main Port (gare maritime in french) in the bay right near the tourist information centre.

There was no good spots to hide a decent sized cache there, so I could only place an eclipse mint tin and hope it survives the weather and the tourists. It is not hard to find, but if it has gone missing, you can still log it if you prove that you attended. (And you can replace it and cover it up if you can too)

Take your own pen as it is a log only cache.

I hadn't loaded this cache before our trip but with some rare Internet availability in the Information Centre, I decided to have a look on the phone to see if there were any GCA caches nearby. To my surprise, this was only 40-50 metres away Shocked so how could I not have a look for it? Wink I keyed in the coordinates as a WP and took note of the hint but there was nothing near GZ that looked likely. Sad

Traipsing back to the Info Centre for some more ever increasingly flaky Internet, I read the log of 31 October last year with its revised 'hint' and also noticed the permission to log a 'proof' find in the event that the cache is missing again.

Having felt under the corner of the building as per the previous log, and even rechecking the corner with a German geocacher I met in town who was visiting from the Maasdam (even though I was on the Radiance of the Seas docked around the corner), I decided to go for the 'proof' option at 13:10. Sorry about that. Embarassed

Thanks for the New Caledonian caching opportunity Roostaman. Very Happy

We searched for this cache at the request of the CO and found that it is missing,so with permission from the CO we replaced this with a film canister now located under the corner

We were at the cache location on Christmas day but there is definitely no cache there. There isn't even a palm tree within several metres of the gz coordinates. We have attached some photos as proof of our visit. TFTC

I'm sure I was in the right spot here today but couldn't come up with the goods. As luck would have it I just happened to have a spare container with me. All details remain the same except the container is now a small, black plastic bottle. Unfortunatly I made the log a little large and it is difficult to remove perhaps a future finder could trim it down a little. Thanks for the cache Roostereman. Took nothing, left a couple of coins and signed log.

I'm almost certain this cache is gone. The GZ zone now have new buildings being built along the port and the area has been fenced off for the construction. I have moved and replaced this cache. The cache now is a eclipse mint tin painted black. I've tried to moved it close as I can to the original location without going in the construction zone. There is a small garden area with 4 palm trees in it. The shorter tree of the 4 will have the cache hidden in the little pockets just above head height. Some paper inside to sign your find, but you will need a pen or pencil. Therefore, I'd like to re-open this cache!!

All fixed and going again - thanks to Josh Hoogs.

i'm heading on my honeymoon to noumea in a few days. If I can, I'll try have a search for it. Would you like this cache replaced if not found?

It looks like this cache is MIA.
To stop it turning up in the searches we'll archive this listing.
If the owner can confirm it's in place or is lucky enough to return to replace the cache, they can enable this listing by logging an "unarchived" log against it.

1st attempt, cruise ship parked alongside and way too many prying eyes. Returned after the ship had sailed but of all the parkland to have a sleep in, someone was resting right along side where it should have been Sad So close but no banana. No worries getting there is half the fun anyway.

Located GZ and although we found the cover undisturbed, we were unable to locate the cache. We did notice however that there were different plants in this area compared to others nearby - perhaps there has been some replanting done.

Found the clue, but there's no ground cover that might conceal the cache. Suspect it has been picked up by garden maintenance.
