Description

Cache is sited next to one of the main shafts in this area belonging to 'Star of The West' gold mine.

Mining occurred in the early 1900's using adits, shallow pits, vertical shafts and trenches.

Numerous vertical shafts have been found in this area and taped off....some may have been missed...so be careful.
Please don't enter any of the shafts...if you do so..IT'S AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Walking towards the shaft you'll notice a high bank...which is formed by excavated material from within the shaft.

Cache is a small sistema with log and pencil placed approx. 5m above and to the north of adit, up on the bank.

Entry off the road is marked with pink tape. From the 3rd tape in you can see where the cache is. Please stay in the open forest along the taped line. There are numerous vertical shafts just a few metres east...I fell partly in one while replacing this cache....a close call. BE WARNED.

Enjoy!.

We were in the area today with Tassie Trekkers and they stopped here to enable us to make the find. Mr W thoroughly enjoyed looking around the old mine shaft. TFTC

Cache and log have been replaced and relocated.
If you stay on the pink tape line it is open bush with no scrub bashing and only a short distance off the road.
DO NOT walk in the thicker fern area to the east where numerous vertical shafts exist.
If you fell in one you would be unlikely to get out

found but very wet, interesting history but so overgrown tftc

found this cache after it hasnt been found for approximatley 6.5 years, on arrival at GZ looked around using the hint, nothing to be found. so branching out in a bigger circle using the hint cache was soon found with the original co ordinance being out by 13m.
so glad to have found this cache as i was worried it wasnt there because of not being logged in so long.
TFTC Very HappyClan Cerberus
have added a more accurate co ordinance for fellow cachers.

First find for the day. Thought to ourselves when are the mine shafts?? With the boys under strict supervision we had a poke around and finally found the vertical shafts and the main mine shaft. Showed the boys what to look for and told them to stick together and don't run around. The boys found the cache, made swaps signed log and we were on our way TFTC

Our second in our Follow the TTTBWECT of TimTam and Swampy.

Figured they were on the same trail we were at this point and decided we would drop the TB we found at previous in the first cache we found during the day that they had not in fact visited.

Would have been nice to catch up and meet them but I suspect they were a few hours ahead of us.

Not to hard to find but had to take care of the big holes. Although we entered via the logged area it would have been better to enter at the pink tape despite the fact that it looks impenetrable from the road.

#2 on the TTTBWECT.
Initially TomTom wanted us to go to Beulah and we found a track but the N-TrailTB wasn't going to go up there. We decided to give it a miss and go for the next cache at Gog Hill. On the way we found the correct road and went up that. It isn't on TomTom so thats why it sent us the wrong way....
Got to GZ and was worried that the cache had fallen victim to the logging and was heading out when i spotted the hint and there it was. Coords a little out today hence looking in the wrong spot.
TNLN, thanks sirius!

Took a bit of searching as we initially thought that maybe the cache had been "logged" due to recent activity but turns out we were just looking in the wrong place. thanks for the cache

29-Oct-11
Traveling with UncleTom3 again. With someone to pull me out if I fell in a shaft and more daylight, it was far less daunting (last time I chickened out). Good cache in an interesting spot. TNLNSL

The marked track in wasn't obvious from the road, so took a detour via the logged area, and found a couple of the shafts. The cache was a few metres from where the GPSr said, but was still quite easy to locate. Took nothing, except several leeches. Left a halfpenny. TFTC.

22-Sep-11
Followed pink tape to GZ, took a while to find, due to the tree canopy overhead, please be mindful of the mine shafts that are not taped off as Mr T stopped and there was a shaft one step away. TFTC

17-Sep-11
dave dad found this one after a bit of scrambling through the undergrowth, made all the harder because he was wearing motorbike boots. The gps was way out because of the trees but he managed a quick find. tftc

11-Jun-11
took a bit of finding only using car GPS.

07-Mar-11
Walked in over logged area only to scrap leg. So with blood dripping from the gash I quickly organised Geo Kid E to pick up cache and log and return. Returned to the car the easy way and fixed leg so ready to go again

Drove within 40m of GZ, but the area has been logged. GZ itself appears to have been spared, but there was no obvious way to approach, and I didn't want to bush bash and fall in a hole - so gave it a miss.
Probably worth a check to make sure the cache is still here.

On my way back from Mole Creek thought I'd have a look for this one before dropping in on my sister in Railton. Again I parked on the lower road and walked uphill only to find a better road at the top. Found way in quickly and had an interesting time inspecting various holes and tunnels. Then searched for the cache. Had just located it when a 4wd drive slowly passed and came back. As I quickly signed the log Landy_clan arrived on the scene. Nice to meet like minded cachers. After a chat they went to explore the area and I returned down hill. I well remember this area from my teenage days. No gold then no gold now - what a pity. Thanks for reactivating this cache Sirius Tas I thoroughly enjoyed my visit will have to take the other y's tassie here when he returns as he enjoys the history surrounding these areas.

What a great area for a chache. So much hard work by the old miners.Did they strile it lucky, I think maybe not. We did though, we met Mrs 2y'stassies at the cache. Great minds think alike, hahaha. Made for a great cacheing experience.

My apologies to Sirius, I should have said to publish an 'unarchived' log.

This cache is now back in play!

15-Sep-10
Finally replaced and updated with new co-ords.

23-Mar-10
This cache has been temporary disabled for over 90 days, so we will be archiving it to de-clutter the database.

When the cache is ready to be activated again the owner can place a 'published' log and it will go live.

07-Feb-10
Will check.

Sadly I think this cache has gone, there has been a fire through in the last few days and all that is left is the stump burnt into the ground and still smouldering, no sign of the cache at all

16-Jan-10
Cache took a bit of looking for but eventually found.
Had a trip down the mineshaft until the ground became too boggy.
Many thanks Sirius.

29-Dec-09
A short walk had us at GZ in no time at all. The GPSr was having trouble getting an accurate position, and a number of places seemed to match the hint, however it didn't take too long to discover the cache.

28-Dec-09
Found with dean_erwin (he's logged it on the wrong date).

02-Nov-09
Struck gold with this cache, as usual the Eyrettes worryingly love discovering old mines. Even more worryingly we found another shaft not too far from this cache, the bunting long since disintegrated and tangled. Pretty happy to see that you replaced this cache as the site is worth visiting. Thanks Sirius.

25-Oct-09
Cache replaced and sited in new spot...Cheers.

12-Oct-09
Disabled until I can do some maintenance.

11-Oct-09
Cache was 2 metres from hiding position out in the open. It also had water in it. I drained most out however all the notebooks are damaged. Looks like muggles have found the cache.

11-Oct-09
Interesting spot. Cache was out in the open & has water in it, maintenance will be required.

Nice easy find after locating the way in by the pink and yellow tape
Few holes in this area that you wouldn't want to fall in

A quick easy find. Checked out the old mine. Had torch but wasn't game to go in. Pink tape now at start of track as well as old yellow tape made it easy to find.

29-Jun-09
Replaced cache back in its original spot. Track now taped from road edge with pink tape....all ok.

28-Jun-09
Approached from the wrong road but I always do that. Easy find in an interesting spot.
Cache was out in the open but quite ok.
Will be back here in the summer with my metal detector hopefully to disprove the title.
Thanks

Yay, 2nd time lucky. I thought it wasn't there, but then I went down further to commune with the native underground dwellers and found the cache instead! Very well hidden almost beyond arms reach (a stick came in very handy!)
Thanks for highlighting this interesting spot, sirius.

21-Mar-09
Sorry to say no cache here that I could find.
But it was still worth the visit this afternoon to see the old mine workings.
The tunnel, er, adit is a work of craftsmanship.
I only stuck the torch and me head in there though Very Happy

We didn't have any luck here finding the cache, but what a great spot. There is absolutely no way we would have ever known or found it otherwise, so coming across the mine shaft was amazing. Found the yellow tape in easily - and the mine shaft, but GPS was playing silly games, and I was accompanied by a rather impatient 7 y.o. who had no interest in helping search once it wasn't immediately obvious. So he went and made coffee and prompted me to give up!!! There is a limited area it can be, so looking forward to coming back sometime to find it!!! Thanks Sirius - what an amazing place!!!

This is what I love about geocaching.. I'd never have found this place on my own!

Half the fun was trying to find the Yellow tape to find our way in, which we EVENTUALLY found.

Enjoyed exploring the area... always amazed at how nature reclaims everything in the end!

I'm a sucker for an old mine site, so it was a very good place for me to notch up a landmark.

Thanks for the cache in a very interesting spot!

Grabbed the GC.COM TB and I'll try and move it on.

Found it no problems. Great area. Decided not to go down the adit as the entrance looked unstable. Shone torch inside. Very impressed with flagging on the floor of the adit, and the superb craftsmanship of the tunnel builder. These people took some care in the construction.

Took geocoin number PC6KK8, left Bart Simpson travel bug TB121JR. I don't know how to log it as dropped here - I can't find how to log bugs/coins in GA sites. The bug is still logged out to me by the system, even though I have dropped it. Next person to visit please grab it and log as grabbed! thankx

dropped of heart of gold geocoin but no gold here and still no finds . lost geocoin number so havent loged it yet

01-Jul-07
No gold here and no cache either - well not for me anyway! GPSr was playing silly buggers so after about 30mins gave up. #2 son loved the mine entrance (bit miffed he wasn't allowed to go in!), and commented that it was just like the one we went into in Ballarat (Sovereign Hill) a few weeks ago - but without the lights . . . I'll be back, thanks Sirius
