Description

A nice walk back into the past

This cache is called named for two very different reasons.

The cache is placed alongside the track through the Truganini Reserve, a listed area commemorating a female long believed to be the last full blooded Tasmanian Aboriginal.

This track is also special to Mr. Cheesypig. Approximately 24 years go this was the first bush walk the Mr. did, in the company of a school friend one Saturday afternoon. This day has never been forgotten and the track has pulled for a while, but it took until now to walk it again. While placing the cache Mr CP and Piglet happened across two boys who actually bore a spooky resemblance to Mr CP and his friend all those years ago.

The area is close rainforest type bush and can quickly become wet and slippery, GPS reception is occasionally dodgy.

Now on to the cache. The aboriginals were believers in caching themselves, leaving buried baskets of food and weapons gathered during the good seasons against their return in the lean times to ensure their survival. Neither food norwepons would be appropriate in the caching community so other survival tools have been left behind, including: a Beanie, work gloves, a shaker torch and a squeeze torch, a glow stick and also entertainment in the form of a kite, cards and a box of dominos. Representations of certain bush tucker creatures have also been left but I would not recommend eating these morsels.

To find the cache I suggest parking at the picnic ground located at:

S42 55.839, E147 21.391.

Start following the trail towards the reserve. At this location:

S42 55.825, E147 21.186,

You will find a fork in the road. You would be well advised to take the advice of the poet Robert Frost (the Road not Taken):

Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

After you have LEFT this point of indecision the cache is not too far off. It was going to be a lot further but when we got a ways up the trail we discovered that the GPS had fallen from Mr. CP's belt. Once we found it again Piglet was not interested in going all the way back again.

Beyond the cache the track continues to the Mount Nelson Signal Tower. follow it to the end and have a cuppa at the cafe before the return journey.

This geocache looks like it might be MIA so we'll archive it to stop it turning up on the search lists. If the cache can be confirmed at the location then the owner can reactive the listing by placing an unarchived log against it.

not found for 3 years

very disappointed not to find, very wet and muddy.

16-Sep-13
Found this one today with wilco....after reading the previous log stating the cache hadnt been found for a year... I feel the need to mention it was over a year until it was found again! The cache is quite large and contains many good swaps!! TFTC

I don't know why I have kept putting this cache off. I enjoyed the walk, even though the track was rather muddy underfoot, unlike the way Mr Frost described it "because it was grassy and wanted wear". The walk was shorter (and less steep) than I expected, and the cache was quickly found. One day I might continue the walk to Mount Nelson, but not today. Thanks for the cache Cheesy.

A nice easy find, found without the hint.
A very lovely spot along a very nice track following a picturesque creek.
We had to walk down this track if we missed the school bus.
Thanks for the memories.
Its been nealy a year since this cache was found. All is still good.

What a lovely well used path. Could see the recent rainfalls had been rushing through this area. Found a great large well stocked cache. Thankyou for the cache and a visit to the other end of the track we'd never been all the way to this end of before. Thanks Cheesypigs!

After having combined accounts with my caching buddy, I am re-logging previous finds. Cache log as 'Rainbow Daisy' will be removed.

With a lazy Sunday to myself, I thought this one would be nice for a walk. There was a sprinkling of rain before I left the car, but I was not going to let that stop me! The weather held out and I was delighted to discover that it was a very pleasant stroll. After locating the cache, I headed up the track further and found a lovely place to sit and daydream for a while. I intend on returning at some stage to explore the remainder of the track. TFTC! Located at 1400hrs Were sure that there is something meaningful in those numbers! but it escapes us at the moment as we have just got back to the carpark after doing the round trip to Truganinni's memorial and the signal tower and back before dark. Unfortunately the coffee shop was shut (which was very demoralizing as it was the bribe to get Duck to go to the top.)Ducks feet are going to deserve a massage after that one.
Well what a great Cache and intro to go with it. Left a tin whistle to signal for help in case someone got lost and took a spotted Quoll to release on the mainland when we get back, hopefully it will find a mate and pay them back for releasing Lyrebirds in Tas.
Cannot understand why it has not been a busier Cache as it's ripper spot. Very HappySad
Thanks Cheesy pigs for a great day

08-Dec-10
There was steady light rain as we set off up the track but it was pleasant at it provided some relief to the very humid conditions. It was an enjoyable walk through interesting trees and plants. Once near GZ a quick find was made (how could you miss it!). TFTC

Nice walk up the hill. Found cache easily. Left redeineer tb and looney tunces character. Took Pig Tray

Despite having grown up in Taroona, and having spent much of my childhood roaming the bush around it, I've never actually been up this track before!
At GZ, the GPS sent me the wrong way at first, and then I found it quite easily.
Last found by a member of the public, who signed the book.

Our first find.
Went with my boy all the way up to Signal station. Stoped by to check the cache and then had to listen to complaining that there is no more treasures around... Smile
Ton of fun!
Thanks Cheesy pigs!!!

Wow. I am ashamed to admit that this is the first time that I have been up here. It's very pretty. I came up from the bottom, squishing gingerly along a rather muddy track, but enjoying the fact that there was water trickling in the creek, lots of green, and that special bush smell. And there was a nice big easy-to-find monster cache at the half-way point of my journey. I signed the log and was back out on the track and heading down just in time to meet the muggle I'd overtaken on the way up. I was a bit more worried about the slippery terrain on the downhill sections, but a little care and I was fine ... and I didn't even get too much mud on my white runners (yes, white runners probably wasn't a good idea!). Thanks for bringing me here, Cheesy pigs.

Found at 1601hrs as my 53rd find. Took some little tackers with me and they loved their first experience of geocaching. We attacked it from from the top of the hill and they loved the bushwalk. They were looking for "X" marks the spot, treasure chests and all of that type of thing!! Excitement when I said I'd seen it and off they went in search. Eyes popped when they saw it for the first time. I think they will ask their parents for GPS and the family will be off in search themselves. Thanks for that experience.TFTC. Cheers OldSaint.

Would you believe this is the first time I've found a LARGE cache? WOW! And what a cool walk it was too- very atmospheric! Loved it! TFTC!

01-Oct-08
Last cache for the day, and the final resting spot for Tikimon TB today. Loved the atmosphere here, soo close to houses, yet a world apart. TNLN Ta Cheesies
Oops, didn't realize this was a GCA cache whilst there, will have to retrieve the TB tomorrow. Sorry

This is a community announcement from Fidjit
Suit, tie and dress shoes is NOT appropriate attire to do this cache (especially after the rain of the last few days ) Smile
End Community Announcement.
One day when I'm more dressed for the occasion, I'll do the whole track Smile TNLNSL.

Nice meandering through the bush. Nearly got caught by muggles. Took sudoku book and a puzzle. Left key ring, light, pig spoon rest and bubbles. TFTC Cheesey Pigs

02-Mar-08
We got our act together (at least a little bit!), checked the GCA site and set out to find this cache that we hadn't noticed was here before! Now that we are a 2 gps team we can compete to see who can locate a cache first - and so it was that DD spotted this one from the track!!! T towel (the microfauna have moved into the cache and were starting to nest here) and geocoin. L attractive pinkish frog soft toy (safe in plastic bag!!).Thanks CPs.

11-Feb-08
An easier walk than anticipated and also a very pleasant one. Found without any trouble. All ok, although we covered it up a bit better before leaving. T - zinc stick, L - rubber ball & seashell. Also placed geocoin TB 500 Finds in this cache. TFTC

06-Jan-08
A very pleasant walk that none of us had done before. We didn't go all the way to the top though.
Paulus thought he recognised someone walking down the track, in the opposite direction, but it wasn't until we read the cache's logbook that it was confirmed. Twas Polfil that passed us by.
Thanks Cheesys.

06-Jan-08
It was one of our easiest find because the cache was totally exposed when we found it. We have hidden it properly at the same spot. Thanks. TNLNSL.

27-Nov-07
Casually strolling up the track with 4paws in toe...ok...he was pulling me...why else do I bring him caching...LOL...when this huge cache jumped out and mugged me...well almost...at the very least it had found me before I had the chance to turn the GPSr back on.This cache had more exposure than a nudist colony. Very surprised to still see it there..and even more so when still full of swaps.Lovely track alongside creek...which is down to a trickle...would be great to walk all the way...no time today alas.Recovered cache with very large rock and bark...can't see it from track at all....next cacher will need to look a LOT harder.
Enjoyed this one heaps...nice jaunt in the early hrs.TNLNSL TFTBiiiiigggggC CP's Cheers.

27-Sep-07
Enjoyed the walk in to this cache. It was a great morning for it. We just about made up our minds to continue up to the top but decided to look further down the coast. Considering some of the caches we came across the walk would have been best.

Thanks for the huge cache and lovely walk. Its not the biggest cache we have seen as there was one in SA which was a 40 litre bucket full of mugs.

15-Sep-07
Thanks for Remembering the Past. It was super big. And that's all that I want to say.

15-Sep-07
Saw lots of orchids on the way (found by my grandfather). Good cache. My cousin took a quad bike and left quoll. Gorbak took torch and left magnifying glass. I reckon the next person who goes to the cache will take the magnifying glass.

09-Sep-07
Went up to this huge cache on a foggy start to a great day.The dog and i(not sure if he should have been there or not)made it quite quickly to the cache which was hard to miss.Took the systema and left a bird it seemed an appropriate place as there were mates for it everywhere. Thanks Cheesy Pigs

02-Sep-07
Well Cheesy Pigs I needed a walk and after going the wrong way I ended up here. A lovely walk up to the cache and if I'd had more time drinking coffee at the Mt. Nelson cafe would have been enjoyed, maybe next time. Thanks for the cache Cheesy Pigs. Took keyring torch and left zinc stick

02-Aug-07
I took the fork before the fork and got forking lost again. I managed to get back to GZ and was pleased to find it as I hadn't decoded the hints beforehand. Lovely crisp morning but a muggle nearby prevented me from having a good look inside the large cache. TNLNSL Thanks Cheesy pigs

01-Jul-07
Went to start his cache then realised that my GPSr was in the other cachemobile. Parked the cachevan and went for a walk to retrieve the GPSr. 20 minutes later I had it and was off down the hill to pick up RomanSwamp. Back down the road and we off walking.
Found the cache after walking too far...
TNLN thanks CP's

I don't know why, but I've never walked this track. It's such a nice one too, as it twists along the creek- which were flowing quite nicely thanks to the rain. Was lucky and got the cache in between showers, GOSr had me climbing down the bank, but was lucky enough to turn around in time to spot Big Bertha - my she has a lot of room in her!
Took nothing, left a leftover empty Sistema complete with zip lock bags and log book.
Many thanks Cheesy pigs, this is another one of those tracks that needed a plastic container on it to get me there.

19-Jun-07
After my appointment in town, puppy wanted another walk, so off we went. Very enjoyable, lovely track. TN L sudoku book, I love it when I've actually noticed in advance that it's a large cache and then can take something big (or biggish)! After logging, we continued up the path, crossed the stream and followed another path back. It seemed to stop at one point, but we found another which required me to do my best Indiana Jones impersonation to cross back over a fallen log.
Thanks for the very nice afternoon stroll Cheesy Pigs!

16-Jun-07
After we had done some chores (cleaning walls) and errands (dropping off lawn mower to be fixed and finding something to wear to my sister's wedding) and ensured we had plenty of energy for the journey (at Jackman & McRoss - we may have overdone it!), it was time to head out and do some caching. This was the closest recent addition to Hobart's caches, so off we went on a pleasant walk. There were several family groups hitting this trail, but we had plenty of time between muggles to find this. Some fantastic swapps here, but I hadn't brought anything so TNLN. Thank you for the cache Mr Cheesy.

Started this track sure that someone would have found this cache days ago and just hadn't had a chance to log it. Turns out we were only a couple of hours away from a FTF! still had great fun and this is a fantastically stocked cache. Took Mr Crab Travel Bug, Left Tumbleweed Geocoin (which I can't seem to 'drop' into the cache online - technology is not my friend!). Anyway, thanks for a great cache!

15-Jun-07
I was surfing the Geo pages at lunch and saw this cache. But couldn't make my mind whether to risk doing it today or the weekend. Next time I won't think about it as long. I think I will use the "Nike principal"
Just do it
I don’t know what it is with FTF's and me. Got piped at the post AGAIN. Well this time it was closer than last, maybe next time I will get lucky.
Thanks to Gorbak I didn't have to search too hard as he was standing next to it.

I had been planning to put a cache along this track for some time now. But wasn't sure whether to start at the top or bottom. Oh well don't have to make my mind up now.

Thanks for the cache Cheesypigs

And congratulations Gorbak on your 100th Tassie cache

15-Jun-07
FTF (by a couple of minutes!) and my 100th find in Tasmania. Wow - That's a cache and a half! I felt so guilty about having only brought a little bouncy ball as a swap that I TNLN. This is another one of those spots that I had been intending to visit for quite some time, so thanks for the cache Mr CP! I wouldn't mind bringing the young 'uns back here sometime.

I was just finishing up having a good look through the cache contents when I spied an official looking someone coming up the track. I was more than a little relieved to learn that it was no other than pjamesk! This was the first time that I've run into another cacher while searching!
