Description

Nice tranquil spot near the lake often visited by fisher muggles.

Will be a drive by if you have a 4wd...otherwise will be a 2km walk each way.

Cache is a black 500ml container with logbook, pencil and usual swaps.

Name came about from the large trout I spotted a couple of years ago when lake level was way down...and must have been 5-6kg or more.

Track starts off the Mersey Main Road at S41 49.332 E146 12.830 .

Enjoy!

Today my mates and I had planned a fishing trip to lake rowallan for the afternoon. We had planned to venture up to the furthest end of rowallan having been up here before I started caching, I noticed that there was a cache nearby to where we were going the other day. So while here I walked up and grabbed the cache as we were fishing just round the corner from this one. Accurate co-ordinance lead to a fairly quick find. Signed the log and back to fishing with the mates. Unfortunately no fish were caught but the cache find was a bonus. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Today we spent some time in the Mersey Forest and managed to meet two of our 2020 targets. We started by walking in on the Lees Paddocks track to find GCWN21, one of our oldest unfound caches. It was a warm but overcast day and smoke began of move up the valley late in the morning. By the time we reached to track into Wily Old Brown it was very smokey.

We drove our low clearance 4WD Toyota wagon to within 560m of the cache and walked the rest on foot. We were glad we did as there were several very large trees across various tracks down to the lake. As we made our way down there were a few distant rumbles signalling that the predicted storm was hopefully on its way. Would we get to the cache and back again before the rain arrived?

Accurate coordinates took us to the cache which we found tucked safely away from sight. All was dry and we soon had the log signed. We were surprised that the last find was 2 months short of 4 years ago by Tassie Trekkers. The log book had an entry from a fishing family who had camped in the area in 2018 and found the cache while collecting wood. They put it back where it had been found. Container and contents were in good condition and the cache is still well stocked. It was now time to make our way back to the car as the thunder rolls became closer and more frequent.

Thanks for this cache Sirius Tas. We enjoyed a short walk along the lake edge on the way in but took a short cut back to the car arriving just as the first downpour arrived. It was a pity it was so smokey as we would have loved to see the lake on a clear day. Wily Old Brown was nowhere in sight. A great old cache that deserves more visits.

Out caching in the area today bought us to this secluded location. Drove to within 100m of GZ then walked in to make a quick find.

Cache and contents were in excellent condition.

Thanks for bringing us here we enjoyed the journey to this cache.

Took the short drive after being in the Walls for the weekend to find this one. Didn't need to use 4wd but glad of the extra clearance with the vehicle. Everything nice and dry. TFTC

This was our last find for the day and it was the one we will remember. This is a fab location and today the snow clouds were appearing over the southwest hills. The lake was very low and appeared to have been that way for a while. We have been to the opposit side of the lake camping and fishing many times but never realised just how good the east side is. Thanks so much for this one. Got some great photos as well. Easy 4x4 track in. Easy find as well. We had the company of Leah_Nathan_co on the day. As always they forgot to sign the log, thats kids for ya, lol

Thanks Sirius. We came looking for a place to camp and we found it just down the track from here. Too windy here today.

The track was is a bit overgrown and bumpy today. We put some new scratches on the fourby and camper, but that's what it's all about, no Toorak Tractor here!

Huge well done to redtag & gspblu for finding this cache...as the task was made extremely difficult due to erroneous co-ords...sorry guys. Many thanks for the co-ord update...and have now updated.

Hugely satisfying find.
Nice walk in and a good search. Its a shame to see the water level so low but it WILL rain again soon. We picked the right cache to carry a beer with us to and that was most enjoyable after the find.
Thanks Sirius Tas

This would have to be one of the most rewarding finds since I started caching 11 months ago.
Having met sirius the previous day both gspblu and I were all the more determined to find Wiley Old Brown cause Sirius is such a nice bloke.
We knew there was a previous DNF by 3daygrowth who we knew would have given it a good going over so we weren’t expecting it to be easy but we were both very determined.
The drive in was easy and the walk was enjoyable and after about 25 minutes of searching gspblu shouted out the words I was hoping I would hear “Found Itâ€!!
What joy!!!
We celebrated with a nice cold beer and then had trouble wiping the smiles off our faces the whole way back to Hobart.
A huge thanks Sirius for topping our North West caching weekend off.

No 4x4 so had to hoof it in. Nice brisk 20min walk found me at GZ. GPS swinging wildly, so resorted to the hint - no use at all!
The nearby muggles of fishing variety were watching with worried looks as I intimately examined every tree in the vicinity - no doubt wondering which institution I'd escaped from.
Rooted around for an hour before calling it a day.
Should be called "Wily Old SiriusTas"
