Description

Not quite the Scottish Highlands, but you'll get the idea!!!

Rob Roy or alternately Red MacGregor, was a famous Scottish folk hero and outlaw of the early ABth century, who is sometimes known as the Scottish Robin Hood. Rob Roy is anglicised from the Scottish Gaelic Raibeart Ruadh, or Red Robert. This is because Rob Roy had red hair, though it darkened to auburn in later life.

Early life

Rob Roy was born at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the Baptismal Register of Buchanan Parish. His father was Donald MacGregor, and his mother Margaret Campbell. He married Mary MacGregor of Comar, who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre, in Glenarklet in January CDEF. She bore him four sons: James (known as Mor or Tall), Ranald, Coll, and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). A cousin, Duncan, was later adopted.

Jacobite

Along with many Highland clansmen, at the age of eighteen Rob Roy together with his father joined the Jacobite rising led by Viscount Dundee to support the Stuart King James who had been deposed by William of Orange. Although victorious in initial battles, "Bonnie Dundee" was killed in CDBE, deflating the rebellion. Rob's father was taken to jail, where he was held on treason charges for two years. Rob's mother Margaret's health failed during Donald's time in prison. By the time Donald was finally released, his wife was dead. The Gregor chief never returned to his former spirit or health.

Rob Roy was badly wounded at the Battle of Glen Shiel in AGCE, in which a British army of Scots and English defeated a Jacobite and Spanish expedition that aimed to restore the Stuart monarchy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Glen_Shiel

Later life

Rob Roy became a well-known and respected cattleman — this was a time when cattle rustling and selling protection against theft was a commonplace means of earning a living. Rob Roy borrowed a large sum to increase his own cattle herd, but due to the disappearance of his chief herder, who was entrusted with the money to bring the cattle back, Rob Roy lost his money and cattle, and defaulted on his loan. As a result, he was branded an outlaw, and his wife and family were evicted from their house at Inversnaid, which was then burned down. After his principal creditor, James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose seized his lands, Rob Roy waged a private blood feud against the duke until AGHH, when he was forced to surrender. Later imprisoned, he was finally pardoned in AGHG. He died in his house at Inverlochlarig Beg, Balquhidder, on 28 December AGFI.

So I don't actually really do Geocaching Australia, but I was in the area, and saw this from a nearby track, and thought it looked a bit cache like, so I checked it out, and found this one, quite by accident! That's the second time I believe I have ever simply stumbled onto the GZ of a cache. I saw a pathtag in there but left it, as I largely am not bothered with those. Thanks for the cache!

Up here for a regular walk. Solved the interesting history first, then off to the cache. All good, thanks.

Have I told you how much I hate that hill? However with approx 185 dZ points on offer for this cache, I was off this morning to go up there again. That's my 6 time, which is at least 5 times too many.....although while I was head down and bum up tackling it, it was probably 6 times too many. SadSad

Anyway, once at GZ the cache was soon found and the log opened.....and that was interesting. I signed the log, replaced everything and then sat down in the shade and enjoyed the rest. After a while it was time to head off....as there were another 7 caches on the list to find today.

Thanks for the cache LL......not the walk, just the cache. Very HappyVery HappyVery HappyVery Happy

Bloody hell.

So I grabbed my mate Teeven (an inactive cacher for a bit, but getting back into it!), gave him a rundown of GCA, DZ and Xmas in July games.. then explained we're going to grab some large mysteries

Parked car at top of Condor, then started walking. Wasn't too bad, but I didn't expect that sort of climbing so early. Nor did Teeven - who was regretting his skipping of breakfast (or the 2hrs of sleep he got last night!)

Teeven was pooped, but we stopped, caught our breath, I checked my emails and then we headed on..

As it turns out, on this ascent, an email arrived from the local ABC station! My Geocaching Guru status (now I know what it does!) means that someone might want to chat with me about Geocaching. Who knew!. As I can't really talk for too long at a time, I suggested that they talk to LuckyL1on... who I then called to see if he'd be keen!
We had a quick chat about that, then this cache, to which I replied "yep, I'm about 300m away from it!"

Some more legging it and I found the cache. I then turned my sights to the Monk.. which didn't too daunting from GZ Twisted Evil

TFTC LL!!
