Description

Battleship !

Battleship was a recent movie loosely (very loosely !!) based on the Boardgame Battleship. It was a pretty good yarn about defending the world against invading aliens, and in the version released in Australia its the Aussies saving the day ! The Battleship of the title is in fact the USS Missouri (BB-63), dragged out of mothballs at Pearl Harbour to take on the aliens.

The Royal Australian Navy had never had a Battleship. The closest it came was the Battlecruiser HMAS Australia (I) before, during and just after World War I. Research some basic facts on HMAS Australia (I) (hint hint Wikipedia) to find this cache located at South AB CD.EFG East HJK LM.NPQ.

HMAS Australia (I) :

Ordered : 0M December CM0G

Laid Down : QE June PMP0

Launched : QB October PMHP

Commissioned : QC June CGHA

Following her Commissioning, on N0 June, King George V and the Prince of Wales visited HMAS Australia (I) to farewell the ship

HMAS Australia (I) only ever fired in anger twice: at a German merchant vessel in January 1915, and at a suspected submarine contact in December 191D

Balltle Honours : Rabaul HGCJ & North Sea HGCL-CK

Scuttled : HQ April CMQF

Found this cache on the way to, at or on the way home from the Mega at Clearwaters. My trip to the Mega was great, found lab caches which while like gadgets are new icons to me. Found some great caches and brought back some neat ideas for new caches in Tasmania.

#GA2204 - 14:00; After collecting a few newer GC caches I headed out into familiar territory to close another hole in the dZ calendar. It's nice to have reached a point where I only have about four more streaks of more than two days in a row to close and 56 days in total between now and 28 October next year to fill the calendar completely, although one will have to wait a couple more years! Anyway, I digress Whistle I arrived at GZ and soon had the cache in hand having retrieved it from its lopsided hide. Log signed and I am headed back to the city to collect the geohoney who is undergoing some retail therapy, and perhaps collect a history cache or two while I await her call. When we were preparing for this trip to the ACT we found this puzzle. Some online research gave us the information we needed and we soon had a set of coordinates which were confirmed by the coordinate checker. This afternoon, as we headed towards Uriarra Village, we arrived at the hide for this cache. It appears that GZ has been impacted by something big and heavy (unlikely to be a battleship in this location) but the cache was safe and sound in its hide. The cache and its contents were in good condition. Thanks fitzy_1965 for the puzzle and the cache.

A lunchtime drive saw me out grabbing another interesting GCA puzzle.

I do have an interest in RAN history as my Dad was in the Navy. Managed to solve this one without ANY help from the CO ! Lol.

An unexpected day off (feeling a bit under the weather..), so another day off!

Anyhow, I headed down south to buy a new graphics card for my PC, and then headed from Fyshwick to this cache..

Happy find in a familiar location Smile

Interestingly, a broken down (newish) car nearby.. No muggles saw me though!

TFTC Fitzy! (and also a big thank you too, for all the caches you've put on GCA recently!)

Saw this published and set about solving it. Lots of numbers that flowed into each other at times, but everything worked out and the thumps up from the checker was soon received.

Headed out today to make the find and once at GZ the cache soon spotted....from the bottom. No sure if the GZ is as it was when the cache was placed, so will advise the CO to ensure all is good.

Other than that, an interesting historical cache that was fun to read up about.

Thanks fitzy.....
