Description

Access is via the Meander Falls car park. The sign posted track heads right then after a couple of minutes will lead you to the foot bridge crossing the

Meander River. The track is clear and well marked. After a short climb you'll come to a junction at the base of Split Rock. This is a loop track which will

take you to Split Rock Falls regardless of which way you go. Having been both ways...the left fork is certainly more scenic and is my recommended

option.

This track will lead you past numerous rock overhangs, past Shower Cave Falls and into some of the most beautiful fern glades in Tasmania.

After reaching Split Rock Falls you'll find the cache located near another stunning feature....take some time to explore.

You can access the upper area of the falls via ledges which will give you a panoramic view down the valley out to Poatina and Tiers. Take care here as

there are substantial vertical drops.

Cache is a black screw top container with logbook, pencil and usual swaps.

You can also complete the loop over to Meander Falls by following the track up hill to a junction at S41 43.485 E146 31.852...taking the left fork.

Please read the notes for the cache 'Great Western Tears' which will detail this route. This is rated as hard and will take 5hrs plus.

If not going to Meander Falls...simply retrace your steps for a second awesome experience. Approx. return time of around 2.5 hrs.

Enjoy!

Such a beautiful walk. Not too much water for the creek crossings but enough to make the falls look spectacular. Would love to see them in the midst of winter. Cache was reasonably easy to find with the hint, tucked away nice and dry.
A walk well worth it, thanks Sirius

Found with seasoned cachers Carroll-Eyre. Took quite a bit of searching as GPS signal marginal under tree canopy. With the low cloud and mist we decided a change of plans from the original intention to climb Mother Cummins. A great day with good friends.

02-Jul-11
The plan was to climb Mother Cummings Peak but with dismally low cloud cover we changed our plans to walk to Split Rock Falls and then hopefully onto Bastion Falls. We checked on the condition our cache at the smaller falls and then happily trudged our way up the Split Rock creek marvelling at the rock formations. We started our search after the arrival at the first of the impressive falls and we clambered, slithered and slipped all over the falls looking for the cache and basically having a good time while the mountain mist blew down the valley. Our unsuccessful search prompted us to turn on the GPSr on only to discover we were quite some distance from the GZ, no wonder the search was fruitless. We clambered up to the next set of falls and while the CEyrettes and co explored the falls I tried to make sense of erratic GPSr with its multitude of GZ’s, just how can so many possible GZ’s cover such a large area. The mist cleared enough for me to glimpse another huge rock formation and up the slope the search continued where the GPSr continued to confusingly report that the search was maybe closer, no furtherer, but ever so closer before bingo, there was the cache…..our 500th find. Hooray, a astoundingly hard cache to find in a truly dramatically beautiful place. Thanks Sirius for placing so many caches in places like these, places that are well worth discovering.
Oh the Bastion Falls cache will have to wait another day, we couldn’t even find the track in….

Found at 12:33 before waltzing on to Meander Falls. We took the alternative route via GC206Y7 partly by chance as we didn't see the junction though had wanted to go that way anyway. We also faced a bit of confusion over whether the falls were actually Split Rock. We met another bush walker at the falls who we crossed paths with several times (since the night before in fact, when we pulled in to camp). Apparently he told my mate that these falls weren't Split Rock. Then we missed the cache by 60 metres or so (trust me, it seems like a long way on this steep terrain). So we dumped our packs and went back for the cache. How free did we feel without our backpacks, suddenly the distance was nothing. We searched high and low, far and wide, to no avail it seemed. FInally my mate Daniel found the cache though the camouflage didn't quite match the the hint (though the location seems right). On the way out I dropped my muesli bar, which I was going to eat after finding the cache. Luckily that was also easily relocated (wouldn't want to litter this pristine forest and I was hungry). We then continued our walk to Meander Falls, where crossing the rock scree was a real killer but worth it all up. Thanks for hiding a cache in this nice spot, giving me just that extra motivation to take this route.

Just going back through the logs (which makes for enjoyable reading) and it seems like it's a common thing to have a bit of an ordeal in the process of going for this cache. (Despite it always being a stunning area and walk and a top day in the end)! I feel like we really earned this one. The walk to Shower Cave Falls was straightforward and we set off on the recommended left/lower side of the loop. Got about half way and the second or third stream to cross and only about 200m to go. I crossed it pretty easily, (so it was easy) but Maddie had a go and the fast current spooked her and that was it, she went and sat around the corner (I could see the tip of her head waiting almost out of sight!) That's right, she pulled the advancing years card and refused to take on the raging torrent. To be fair it was quite fast and splashy and deepish in places, but there were lots of rocks poking up. So when she wouldn't budge on that one, I thought OK, we can go back and do the top loop. On the way up between the split rock, I lifted her up a few of those huge steps, but she got jack of that and decided she was out of there and scampered her way back to the bottom. So I decided it was a good time for lunch. I gave her most of my egg and tuna as she clearly needed the energy boost. That little section could surely be climbed up by a dog, so after a good break I psyched her up and up she ran. From there we continued up and up...and up some more...and I was nearly about to turn around assuming I had missed the turn down because we were so far above the falls, but then amazingly we came across the signed intersection. After crossing the rock field I took a good while to find the track...then plain sailing to the cache (which we found first) and falls. Phew. After looking in a few other places first, the cache was found in good time and all was in good order. I think that the track between Shower Cave Falls and Split Rock Falls is considerably harder to pick out, (both upper and lower sections of the loop) and I spent some time trying to find it a few times. We came back on the lower track and this time fickle Maddie decided the problem stream was crossable! I think we were both really pleased to get back to the car and I've had one exhausted dog since! Thanks for a top adventure Sirius, a terrific walk and a great cache.

Fantastic effort on your loop walk Hookline...way to go.

Found on the last leg of the Meander Falls loop walk. The impressive feature at GZ was just the beginning of one impressive feature after another. Something amazing around every corner. A very beautiful area. Thanks!

A top walk in an area I have often visited but never tired of. With Redtag as company we had a great day in this area. Thanks Sirius

After completing the walk to Bastion Cascades we drove to Split Rock Falls and headed off for what we expected to be another top sirius cache.... no disappointments there ...IT WAS !!!!

Neribil and I were a little slower than we normally walk (we both had strapped ankles from injuries earlier in the week) but even with all the picture stops we still were back to the car in just under the 2.5 hours.
All the falls were in fine state with lots of water flowing over them and the cache was in perfect condition exactly where the hint says it is.
After logging our find we continued on up the hill and for some time I wondered if we were going to end up at Meander Falls but Neribil assured me we would come to a junction and sooner or later we actually did - hooray for him he was right.
We took a right turn and yay finally some downhill.
Once again WELL DONE SIRIUS, I think I am a bit of a falls addict so this was my pick of the caches we did today.

Some relatives wanted to experience some interesting bushwalking in Tasmania and acting upon Dippy's recommendation of walking in the Meander Valley we chose this cache as the one to find.
So we ended up having a fantastic awe inspiring afternoon that enthralled all of the junior cachers (Tasowls and the Eyrettes)right from the moment that we crossed the suspension bridge right and started scrambling over earnest brooks in the constant drizzle. Drizzle of course being the best time to explore rainforests because they are forests where there is a lot of rain......
We took Sirius' description advice and took the left hand track and were treated to three special waterfalls each deserving their own cache. And each waterfall was more spectacular than the one before, and the nearby rock formations also progressively more impressive.
And then we came to the falls themselves and the cache location. ....where I discovered that the printed out clues had turned into paper mache and the hint and log page must have been in the car or at home. By now we were running out of daylight time so we fired up the GPSr only to find that steep rock formations, rain and tall thick trees meant that we could only locate one satellite, and yes we were in the right country but that was about the extent of the receiver's usefulness. So we gave up on finding the cache and continued the loop across the boulder fields.
And we were really starting to run out daylight, hmmmn this two and a half hour had stretched out to be much longer than the four hours that I allowed for and now we were going to be walking the last twenty minutes in the dark. Thank goodness for Tasowl's eldest child having a torch. But the benefit of walking in the dark through a rainforest was the abundance of glow worms... and the sense of overwhelming relief to find the suspension bridge.
Six hours after our start we were back at the cars, enthralled by our adventure and vowing to come back (probably early July) with a couple of extra caches and a lot more time.
Thanks Sirius for the fun cache......we still gave the experience an outstanding rating because the day was an experience that we will always treasure.....

Grabbed this one whilst CraigRat and I were on our March "One good walk a month" - had scouted the area for our next good walk last month when we did Projection Bluff.

Enjoyed the walk to the cache immensely, lots of what I like, Tree Ferns, large rock formations and waterfalls.

Interesting to note it was one year to the day since the cache was last taken on by geoskid. This cache needs more visitors, if you are a serious cacher, you owe it to yourself to add this cache to your To Do List.

Thanks for an excellent cache sirius Tas - TNLNEtE

Outstanding and highly recommended.

What can I say?

Brilliant walk up with Horus on our regular 'One Good Walk a Month' trek.

LOVED the rocks, ADORED the falls (we like falls!!!)

Lots of photos taken, very satisfying walk, albeit a tad longer than signposted Smile

found the cache after having a few red herrings thrown to me by the GPS..must get one of these fancy new ones.....

Thanks so much for the cache, I loved it and recommend this cache!!!

Came to Split Rock Falls after Meander Falls on the loop walk. Couldnt get any GPS reception, and couldnt match the clue to any rock feature or ledges. It dawned on me later back at camp that we did the walk in reverse to the description, and that the "another stunning feature" could have been the stunning feature we passed before reaching the falls, rather than after reaching the falls. Anyway, after about 45mins, I dragged myself away and continued on the walk, amazed at the size of the rock formations. All in all, a very enjoyable walk. Thanks sirius.

Well what can I say, The day started out as interesting,
Changed the head light bulb in the bike last night anticipating us needing high beam on the way to Deloraine (been meaning to do that for 2 weeks now),
Need not have bothered as high beam went out before we reached Westbury but not to worry we still have low beam (right) another 5kms (#?>%$%#cheap#%$>?#)
Not stopping, got to get to Deloraine, meet 3daygrowth, the moon is still full I can still see (sort of),
Sneaking through Deloraine looking at the mist hanging over the lake (trying to look inconspicuous)
Don't these people sleep out here?
Almost to the meeting point just over the bridge and turn Right.....OH CRAP... that car had blue lights on the roof... Did he stop... is he turning around...Whew...Thank you,
Met up with 3daygrowth right on time and headed off for the cache,
Started off on the track just as the sun was coming up,
Half way in (feeling about 90 now) head spinning... must sit down... (or fall down),
REASON, visited dentist thursday, teeth out , mouth sore, cant eat (now I know what models go through), Thanks 3daygrowth for the muesli bar,
Not going back, On we go, Ill just plod along behind you two fit people,
Made it to GZ just as 3daygrowth was pulling out the plastic for a well deserved FTF for dragging along a seriously suffering cacher and not complaining once,

Thanks sirius Tas for the cache TNLNSL

and 3cheers to 3daygrowth for allowing us to come along,

Attempted this one along with 5Commer3 and son at daybreak. Deceptivly easy going for the first few hundred meters then the track starts getting serious and we start getting sweaty.
Well worth it though, fabulous sandstone overhangs and huge rock formations.
Personally found it more difficult coming back down and Im sure I'll ache tomorrow.
All in all a great morning.
Many thanks Sirius, I'll have to get back and find a few more of the ones you've placed it this area.
