Description

Access is via Quarry Road which turns off the Meander Falls Road at approx. S41 42.352 E146 34.043

There is a logged coupe in this road and until burnt I'd advise parking in the Quarry. After burning it will be safe to travel further up the road and follow

the old logging trail until you see the first Stone Hut Track sign.

From here follow the old logging track until you see a second larger sign and the start of the Stone Hut track. Initially the track climbs gently then gets

quite steep for about 20 minutes before easing. This track passes the cache Gno Place Like Gnome by forthferalz but at the moment is unavailable.

Just past here you'll find a track junction at S41 42.509 E146 32.175 and marked as 'The Croft Track'.

From here the track is gently undulating where you'll come to the largest and most spectacular rock overhangs that I've ever seen. The track descends

from here into Bastion Creek...then follows downstream before diving down between a huge rock crevice, which is quite steep and even has a rope to

assist climbing back out.

The track then follows upstream for a short distance to the cache and Bastion Cascade.

The last 10m to the cache is a scramble and can be a quite slippery climb up some logs.....so please take care.

Most GPSr's will be almost useless here due to the narrow canyon like gully.

Cache is a black 500ml container with logbook, pencil and usual swaps.

Cache is placed under the base of the smaller of two myrtles growing on a pinnacle of rock approx. 3m high beside the stream and approx. 40m from

base of cascade.

Standing at the cache facing the cascade look up and to your right to the top of the cliff face and you'll see where the slab of rock you're standing on

has come from!!

Walk time is around 3.5 hrs. Refill your water container for the return trip.

Enjoy!

Our bushwalking club was today doing the Stone Hut circuit, a walk they seem to do about once a year. This was our first walk in the area however and it really was a very enjoyable and easy stroll. Even though it was a warmish day, at this elevation and under the magical shady forest trees it was pleasantly cool. Up the hill we went to the low cliff line where we checked out "Arch Rock" and the "stone hut" - very interesting. Thence along the Croft track. We did the short detour to have a look at the "rabbit warren" - great views here. We stopped at Crowden's Croft overhang/cave for lunch then had a look at Holy Rock before descending to Bastion cascades, which were quite nice despite the very low water flow.

Thankfully the excellent clue made for a quick find of the cache. Unfortunately the cache was full of water and the log book was very wet indeed. We dried out the cache as best we could and were still able to sign the log with a pen but the log book really does need replacing. If it isn't replaced by our next visit we'll make a point of taking up a new log book.

So it was a wonderful walk through lovely terrain with quite a number of fascinating geological features. The track, though a little rough in places and with it's fair share of tree roots is not that difficult and the tagging and tapes make it easy to follow. Top walk and an excellent cache location. Thanks sirius Tas.

Had to wade through the river as the bridge is still out, it didn't take long for the feet and legs to go numb, man it was cold. But it was well worth it, the walk was great, the falls are nice, the rock overhangs are magnificent, the track is well marked and the directions in the description are spot on. This would have to be one if the nicest walks I have done, I do love this area. I don't know why this cache isn't visited more often. Thanks Sirius

Hadn't visited the Cascades for years and made a hash of locating the cache by ignoring the directions. With the help of intrepid (and patient) friends we finally found ourselves at the foot of the falls and in possession of the cache. Left a frog because the world always needs more frogs. TFTC, it was siriusly good!!!

In the company of Redtag we had a top walk in this area. Thanks Sirius

Set out with Neribil today in weather that couldn't be called anything other than perfect!
This walk is truly a superb one and as hard as I tried to capture the incredible sites on camera none of the pictures came close to doing them justice. So this one just needs to be on everyones planned list of caches to do.
Well done Sirius! yet again you have placed another ripper of a cache.

Found today on a walk with a bunch of chaps from the Bushwalking Tasmania forums (http://bushwalk-tasmania.com/). It was a ripper day for a walk, and this walk has a lot to offer if you do the Stone Hut circuit. Strange stone dwellings, big caves and massive rock overhangs, a good variety of terrain and some very nice forest, and that's without even considering the falls. Something to keep you interested the whole time! Smile

The falls were fantastic, there was a really good amount of water coming over them after the recent rains. This is yet another walk that's just not publicised well enough.

Anyway, thanks for the cache Sirius. I'll head back for some of your other Meander caches soon!

What a wonderful walk and cache. Probably the most rewarding I've done. Went up the Stone Hut track and along the Croft Track - it's a climb up, but it is so worth it. Loved going by The Stone Hut again, and then the rocks and overhangs along the Croft track are unbelievable. Got a bit confused near the Falls, as I kept doubling back to try and find the way down but you just stay on the track and about 150m past the cache the track just goes into it - it's a huge crevasse with the rope and all. So then you go back along the lower track to the cache. Beautiful location for the cache. I sat there and ate my lunch in front of the waterfall beside the cache, and took some photos, which I'll upload tomorrow night.
Thanks so much sirius for one of the best caches ever - the FTF was a bonus - but it was the walk that was FANTASTIC!!!
Got back to the car and well on my way before the rain started!!!
