Description

The Space Shuttle Columbia (Orbiter Vehicle Designation OV-102) was the first space-rated orbiter in NASA's Space Shuttle fleet.

Columbia launched for the first time on mission STS-1 on April 12, 1981, the first flight of the Space Shuttle program. STS-1 was commanded by John Young, a veteran from the Gemini and Apollo programs who was the ninth person to walk on the Moon in 1972, and piloted by Robert Crippen, a rookie astronaut. Over 22 years of service it completed 27 missions before disintegrating during re-entry near the end of its 28th mission, STS-107 on February 1, 2003, resulting in the deaths of all seven crew members. I happened to be in North America at the time, and there was a huge outpouring of grief at this the second Space Shuttle lost - again with the loss of seven lives.

As a child and an adult I have always been pretty facinated with space travel. I vaguely remember the Apollo program and then the Space Shuttle program was a background event through my teens and early adult life. In October 2015 I visited the Kennedy Space Center and finally saw a Space Shuttle up close - the Atlantis.

To find this cache you need to do a little research on the Columbia.

Columbia launched on 11 November 1982 on Mission STS-A

Columbia launched on 28 November 1983 on Mission STS-B

Columbia's first flight STS-1 went from 12 April to 1C April 1981

Columbia launched on 8 July 1994 on Mission STS-D5

E number of crew died when Columbia was destroyed

Mission STS-93 was launched from Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad 3F-B

After binge watching the olympics for much of the day, it was great to get out for a walk in Pinnacle to stretch the legs. Not even the drizzle and icy winds could dampen our spirits today as we hunt for the last few battleships! Thanks for the cache.

We spotted this one from a distance as it was out in the open. Signed and rehidden under rocks. Yay! ... another shot in the Battleship game. TFTC.

Pleasant walk on a lovely winter's day. Lots of people, lots of unleashed dogs - glad we left ours at home.
No problems noted with caches. All clean and in place. Thanks for placing and maintaining this, and for bringing us here.

On my last day at home before I head off on a dive trip, I decided to go for a walk on mount painter and The Pinnacle. This is one of two puzzle answers I have had for ages in here. After a DNF I was happy to locate this one after a careful look around the rock heap.

Thanks

I parked nearest to this gate thinking that all the caches I was after today were all very close as it is another extreme heat day in ACT. Ha ha ha! Yes they are relatively close on the map but as the caches included two mystery and one multi, I found myself zig zagging back and forth across my own path all the time. Another good workout and I must admit a successful day cache wise now I just have to log them and see if I can magically find points in this year's summer game. It is the first time I have been involved in a game so rather keen to complete it. Thanks for this series of caches Fitzy - and all so close to home. ClappingDancing

Cold wet and crapping afternoon, but no where near as bad as what the crew of Columbia went through....

Worked out GZ a little while ago (not the day it came out as some folk say) and kept it for a rainy day. Well, it rained toady, and snowed as well, so what better day to head out and make the grab. Parked in a familiar spot and soon had the 280 odd metres to GZ covered and arrived at an interesting spot. Set about uncovering the cache, which didn't really take that long and soon had my name in the log book. Took a bit longer to re-hide the cache than uncover it, but all was good and I was soon heading back to the car.

Neat topic fitzy.....thanks for the history lesson and the cache.... Very HappyVery Happy

#GA1812 - 13:30; Out prepping the geomobile for a caching mission tomorrow and dropped by to collect this cache on the way home. Found a convenient way in to GZ and a shorter way back out! Identified a likely GZ on the approach and should have trusted my geosenses and inspected the first site a bit more closely before doing a circumnavigation, which soon had me back where I started and not long after that I was signing the log. I don't think this cache will go too far in any of the prevailing weather conditions in these parts. TFTC fitzy_1965 and another hole in the dZ calendar is filled! Very HappyClan Cerberus

took a detour from work and headed to Belconnen to find this cache. expecting a few more shuttles to appear, but it seems like just the one for now.

took the wrong path and did some cross country walking, but gz was found soon enough. dug around in the wrong spot, but then the Sistema blue caught my eye. cache found signed and then placed back in its cairn.

TftC fitzy!

After some interesting research, I headed out this way for a wander around. Found the container in a rather interesting formation. Not sure I replaced everything as I found it, but I did my best. It was getting dark and that was some sort of creation.
Thanks Fitzy for the cache, the fun and the interesting research.
