Description

Historic convict-built Franklin House

Built by former convict and successful businessman Britton Jones in 1838, Franklin House is a fine example of a Georgian-era private home and is notable for its rich use of NSW red cedar mouldings. It was extended to accommodate one of the colony's leading private schools, the Classical & Commercial School which operated there from 1842 until 1866 when it reverted to a private residence. In 1960 it became the birthplace of the National Trust in Tasmania which was formed to save it from demolition, and is now also home to the Trust’s State Office.

The house is open for tours 9am-4pm Mon-Sat & Noon-4pm Sun.

Franklin House is often overlooked by us locals, a great part of Launcestons history, I drive past it every other day.
Photographed a wedding here years ago, but other than that never really had a good look around.

#GA2888 - 15:30; Arrived in Tasmania last Saturday and after a few days in Hobart we were now spending some time in Launceston. The geohoney was off with her sister and I grabbed lunch with an old friend, before heading out for a few more caches. After catching up with the geohoney, stopped off to grab this cache as we headed off on our way to Bridport for a few days. TFTC Tardis Very HappyClan Cerberus

First for the day after leaving our free camp site at Evandale and heading back in to the city for a bit of caching and some fun at the pool. Didn't take long to get the required information.
Didn't go in for a visit as I had a 6 year old with me who doesn't like these history caches where there isn't a 'treasure' to find.
Thanks.

Visited this location at the weekend and grabbed the answers to the questions but waited until today to log to fill a gap in our caching calendar. We've been here a while back to find a traditional cache but have never been inside the building. Will have to do that one day! TFTC and the history lesson
