Description

Cathedrals in Australia - Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral, Broome

The Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral or just Broome Cathedral is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Broome, Australia and the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Broome.

In 1899 in the site was built a wooden church dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, with the help of the Philippine pearl divers. Later, the tower and other modifications were completed in April 1904.

In early 1960, the old church of wood and iron needs repairs. The poor state of the church, combined with the fact that the building was too small for the growing community of faithful, led to the decision to build a new church for the city.

Stan Costello, originally from Perth, was commissioned to design the new church of Broome. The building, adjacent to the site of the old church position, began in April 1963 and was completed in September of the same year.

I made a quick stop to photograph this, on my way out of Broome. I would have loved to stay another day here, but it's unbelievably expensive to stay here. Hundreds of dollars a night. (That is, if you don't want to share a bunkroom with others, potentially, unknown Covid carriers.) TFTC Team MavEtJu.

I flew from Broome to Perth for a work trip which will also take me to Derby. I arrived around lunch time and eventually when my luggage arrived i headed over to grab a hire car. I then headed off to the resort and got settled in here. I decided to do some sightseeing and some caching for GA and GC caches. The closest one was a trig about 200 metres away so around the corner and parked up and trekked up the sandy hill and soon had the trig at my foot. What an outstanding view over Broome and surrounds. I trekked back down the hill and headed over to Cable Beach after stopping for a train - Camel train that is. Grabbed a few caches here then headed off out to Ganthaeume Point for some sightseeing and grabbed the LIghthouse here as well. Eventually i made it back into town all be it getting dark and grabbed the last remaining caches both GA and GC.

This was easy to find. Thanks for the cache and bringing me here Team MAVETJU it was dark when i was here and got a great glowing selfie in front of the church....tonight. ClappingClappingDancingDancing

A quick walk around town led us here. The original sign is now missing, replaced by another at the other end of the cathedral that we didn't see until later. Thanks for the cache!

The Big Western Australia trip in 2018. Day 19. I drove down to Broome early to go on an afternoon cruise, but that was cancelled due to wind, so caching kept me busy all day until I finished at sunset on Cable Beach.

Thanks
