Description

Cathedrals in Australia - St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne

In 1858 William Wardell was commissioned to plan the cathedral with a contract signed on 8 December 1858 and building commencing the same year.

Although the nave was completed within 10 years, construction proceeded slowly, and was further delayed by the severe depression which hit Melbourne in 1891. Under the leadership of Archbishop Thomas Carr the cathedral was consecrated in 1897 and even then it was not finished. Given the size of the Catholic community at the time, the massive bluestone Gothic cathedral was an immense and very expensive undertaking, and there were long delays while funds were raised. St Patrick's was one of the two largest churches brought to substantial completion anywhere in the world in the 19th century. The other is St Patrick's Cathedral, New York, United States.

Daniel Mannix, who became Archbishop of Melbourne in 1917, maintained a constant interest in the cathedral, which he was determined to see finished after the long delays during the previous 30 years. He oversaw the addition of the spires and other elements in the late 1930s. The building was officially completed in 1939.

The cathedral is 103.6 metres (340 ft) long on its long axis, 56.4 metres (185 ft) wide across the transepts and 25.3 metres (83 ft) wide across the nave. The nave and transepts are 28.9 metres (95 ft) high. The central spire is 105 metres (344 ft) high and the flanking towers and spires are 61.9 metres (203 ft) high. The bluestone used in its construction was sourced from basalt deposits in nearby Footscray.

Thanks for sharing this interesting location.
In 'town' for the night after dropping my daughter and her friend @ Rod Laver Arena for a concert. That left me with about 7 - 8 hours to explore the city, grabbing caches, waymarks and photos. Geocaching - always a great way to explore areas. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher and finding things that you may never have discovered if not for them. Not a fan of all the traffic so it's great to be here after the rush hour has died away. Apologies for the poor photo quality - it was night-time.

Appreciate you highlighting this area and bringing me here. Clapping

Second of this GA church trio up here for me today. Unfortunately, all the gates are closed, probably for Covid Crying or Very sad, but it's still pretty easy to get the necessary shots, which I did at 14:50. Dancing

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

I traveled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. After checking into the hostel on Thursday i jumped on a tram and headed down to the markets and then jumped off and went for a stroll through a park nearby for another cache. On the tuesday after the event I rode all around the cbd getting caches and was passing through here to go to some other caches so i stopped by here to have a look and and grab some photos so i could log the cache. The things you see when riding a bike....much better than having a car. Thanks for the cache Team Mav etju. still trying to log all my finds from the event.... Dancing

I had been indulging nearby in Dim Sum.

To burn off a few zillion dumplings I bypassed here for a quick photo.

Although I am heading back here for a wedding in a few weeks.

#GA2894 - 17:15; In Melbourne for a couple of days on the way home from a visit to Tasmania. I'm not sure why I haven't stopped to grab a snap of this cathedral on earlier visits, but I hadn't. Addressed that today by grabbing a snap on the way past to grab the history cache across the street as well. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

Hard to believe that Melbourne, being such a tourism-centric city has very little parking available for busses. Luckily there are three bus bays very near to this church and that made it quite easy to grab a quick photo before walking in to town for a meal.

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

After getting Daddy Long Legs irradiated at nearby St V's, we decided to take a walk around the local area finding caches before we had to return to have the scans done. I dropped Daddy Long Legs back for the scanning part and was told it would take an hour. To wait in the waiting room or go find caches???? This was my first stop; a quick happy snap and off I went. I've never been in this cathedral before (I'm not religious and my high school was Anglican so I was dragged into the other lot's cathedrals anyway) and there's no time for exploring today, I've got caches to find!! TFTC Team MavEtJu and an unexpected FTF! Hooray!
