Description
Huon Valley Roamers Landcare Backyard Birds, Burton's Reserve
The Huon Valley Roamers Landcare Group undertakes a range of activities for families and individuals interested in nature. A junior member thought that combining BirdLife Australia's Birds in Backyards program with geocaching would be a fun way to get people out looking for (and recording) birds while hunting for the cache in some fascinating and different habitats.
Burton's Reserve looks over Port Cygnet. A wheelchair accessible walking track allows views of waterbirds in the creek and estuary - and there's a great playground. The Roamers have helped other community groups with tree and shrub planting since 2015.

Found with ausandaus2 and deercheetah. Some people do like to brag! (ha ha). Thanks for the cache.

The bear, the deer and aus2 went to look for the cache while aus set up the picnic lunch in the shelter. They all came back empty handed. So we checked that we had entered to cords correctly into the GPS, all OK. After a coffee aus made the short walk to GZ and found the cache (whoo hoo) - what were they doing!! Thanks for replacing the cache Budgie.

Well this cache certainly is in a interesting location and really deserves to be there. So after another search that proved that the cache was not there, we replaced the container.

No luck finding the cache
Coorindates tend to be in the middle of a grass patch.
Spoke to white webs who confirmed where we were suppose to be searching but no luck

We were almost to the end of May and had a few unmet challenges. A plan was hatched, caches identified and routes planned. Today was our window of opportunity so we headed south on a mission. Extra caches had appeared along our routes, some we decided to capture along with those required to meet our challenges others we decided to by pass leaving them for another day.
This was first on our list. We had been to the park some time ago but abandoned any thought of looking for the cache as a music festival was in full swing and the park was wall to wall muggles - thousands of them.
Today the park was empty so we could search without disruption. It took us a while to locate the cache. The GPS's were unstable so we ended up searching two areas for around 20 minutes before we decided to read some previous logs. This helped us focus our search and soon one of us looked very low and spied the container surrounded by beer cans - empty of course. Container and contents were in good condition. We checked our GPS and it indicated we were 6m from GZ. As we replaced the cache a family of muggle native hens appeared and watched with interest. As we left we watched them dive into the area we had stirred up and start scratching around.
Thanks for the cache HuonValleyRoamers. We enjoyed the early morning walk in the park even though the car temperature guage indicated the outside temperature was four degrees!!!

Hello HuonValleyRoamers thank you for the cache.
As it was Australia Day I just had to go and find a cache
I got up early and went for a walk to find a Trig point before it got too hot. After that I came down to Cygnet to get some more caches that I hadn't already found this one of yours was on the list.
I had found another cache near this spot before and as I arrived I thought this was it.
I walked to GZ and there was a native hen right where the GPS wanted me to look and as she and her chicks didn't want to move on I started my search on the other side and very quickily spotted the container but how to get there? I returned to where the hen and chicks were and reached in a found an easy way to the container.

Well we searched for a bit and then a bit more and all we could find was beer cans, not having a bag with me i couldnt even tidy them up
So a call was made to a past finder and they confirmed were we needed to be looking and what do you know while still on the phone the cache was spotted and we were soon adding our names to the logbook.
thanks for the cache.

After our finds in Huonville, Stainless steel rat and I came here for what was to be our final cache for the day. After a call to Mrs Whitewebbs that plan went out the window! We circled GZ for quite some time finding lots of beer cans and bags of dog poo but not the cache. We know they are all a good size so were concerned it had been muggled. Eventually I spotted it and SSR went to grab it while I was being talked into finding some movable caches
Thanks HuonValleyRoamers

Hi Backyard Birds
A caching afternoon on New Years Day, a rare event for me due to obvious reasons known as THE NIGH BEFORE! I needed a cache today for my "States of the Nation" scavenges; So out I go even with the seediness:
Have you joined a clan?
Enhance your geocaching experience by joining a clan and being a part of the Dragon Zone. Choose a team Clan Griffin Gold - Griffin, Clan Phoenix Green - Phoenix, Clan Cerberus Blue - Cerberus or Clan Minotaur Orange - Minotaur. Earn trophies and rise through the ranks from Dragon Fodder to Ruler of the Universe.
Had been leaving this and a few other caches for such an occasion; hence the opportunity was just too good to pass up. Into the car and voila at Cygnet!
Weather:
Overcast and warm at Huonville – eighteen degrees Celsius here today. Very cloudy but no rain threatening.
It was nineteen degrees Celsius at Cygnet whilst finding the cache.
A pleasant day weather wise for New Years Day.
Travel:
Drove from home to Cygnet to ground zero and back, a distance of about thirty five to forty five kilometres
It took 293 steps burning 25 calories to cover a total of 0.22 kilometres to retrieve this cache
GA11013 “Backyard Birds, Burtons Reserve”
Parked just a little way away from ground zero, in front of the Scout Hall and enjoyed the reserve scenery as I approached the hiding location
As the crow flies, I had a walk of sixty to eighty meters to ground zero.
A short search led to a very easy find and soon had the cache logged; Sainted at 1630 hours and replaced
Found the hiding location most interesting and the view stunning
All the protocols were completed and it was time to head to the car and head home for some more NEW YEARS celebrations.
Really enjoyed this hide and my first cache for 2018 helping me with my points in the States of the Nation Scavenger Hunt - THANK YOU.
This cache will be used as part of the States of the Nation games currently running from 16 December 2017 until 21 January 2018. As the new caches have so many options, a decision will be made as to which scavenge to use it against. It is nice to have a choice. Thanks.
States of the Nation is a real and virtual geocaching scavenger hunt where your home state will compete against other Australian states to find and hide geocaches. Over the 5 week course of the game there will be hundreds of scavenges that you can track down, find and convert into points for your state. Some scavenges will be easy. Some scavenges will be tough. Some scavenges may be impossible. Don't despair. You are not competing just for yourself; you are competing as a state.
There will be a number of scavenges released on a weekly basis but each scavenge will remain until the end of the game. This means even if you decide to join the game part way through, the early scavenges are still available for you to claim. Scavenges will require you to find a geocache, hide a geocache, attend an event or do something else completely different. The game focuses on all aspects of geocaching and so all cache types, sizes, terrain and difficulty will be up for scavenging. TrigPoints, Events, History, Virtual, Webcam, Podcache and Locationless geocaches are all scavengable, so you're not just looking for a box under a bush. Each week there will be a mix of physical, non-physical and locationless geocaches so even if you are not in a geocache rich area, use the locationless component of scavenger series to get out, find something to log and gain points for your state. If you watch the scavenges as they are released you might also spot the 'not so hidden' patterns and plan for future weeks of the series.
Hiding geocaches will also be a large part of the scavenger series, but please remember this is a game of geocaching and geocaches that you hide should be long lasting, be of good quality and you should be proud of what you hide. Please avoid hiding a geocache just for the day so your state can find it before you archive it. Geocaches that exist for a short period of time may result in any claims on that geocache being disqualified. Play creatively, but also play fairly. More geocachers hiding more geocaches makes for more geocaching fun.
If you’re not participating, get into the game and help Tassie come first please.
These caches will also help collect points for the Dragonzone Game as explained above.
HAPPY NEW YEAR,TFTC and cheers

With five new caches released last night we felt a drive was in order to check them out. We arrived at Burton's Reserve and proceed to GZ. We saw ducks, a goose (not Richard, a cacher from gooseandegg team) and plovers. This area was rather quiet of muggles today which was a surprise as such a lovely spot. We signed the log at 12.05 pm and think we were the first geocachers to sign the log as Lachlan and Arabella had written bird notes, so may have been with the cache owner when hiding the cache or doing as part of the project. The cache was well presented and a pleasure to find. FTF @ 12.05 pm TFTC
