Description

Huon Valley Roamers Landcare Backyard Birds, Black Gum Reserve

The Huon Valley Roamers Landcare Group undertakes a range of activities for families and individuals interested in nature. A junior member thought that combining BirdLife Australia's Birds in Backyards program with geocaching would be a fun way to get people out looking for (and recording) birds while hunting for the cache in some fascinating and different habitats.

Black Gum Reserve includes swamp forest, with an abundance of small and medium-sized bush birds. The Roamers have held a number of events at the Reserve, including Stories in the Gums, in partnership with our local Aboriginal communities.

Found it thanks.
Previous kind cachers have fixed, tidied, and replaced the container, and today I added a temporary logsheet.
With respect, if you are going to hide a cache 'in your own backyard' (so to speak) you really need to look after it, or otherwise perhaps remove it.

out and about with 2 RAFAS caching, upon getting to GZ log and container were found in the open and torn to pieces, container had been set fire to and was worse for wear, I had another container so replaced it, but log was torn and wet. will need replacing. Put what was left of log and new container back under decking. TFTC TNLN need a new log.

Thanks for the cache HuonValleyRoamers. Out and about this afternoon with RLD4963 and the GeoGSP. As we approached GZ we could see this cache - out in the open, lid off, contents strewn around the place, and the actual container looking as though someone had attempted to melt it in a fire at some stage. This has been placed extremely close to an existing GC cache and it appears that both have been subjected to being muggled. As it happens, RLD4963 had a spare cache container in his car, so we retrieved what we could of the contents and placed them in the new contained. Really needs a new log as we didn't have a spare log unfortunately.

Found with ausandaus2. Thanks

At GZ we found this cache and the other one, that had been hidden under this structure, strewn everwhere. We picked up both containers and what was left of the contents and sorted them into the best order we could and then replaced them where Old Saint said they had originally been hidden. Thanks for the cache but I'm sure they are going to get muggled again, too easily found by kids being kids.

Arrived in Hounville after a scenic journey via Plenty Valley Road. No trouble finding this one as cache container was sitting on top of the landing under the seat. Rehid under landing - cache and contents in good order.

Many thanks HuonValleyRoamers for publishing this cache and adding to our geocaching experience.

A peaceful place with 2 geocaches so I had to stop . There were plenty of birds around today and no people so it made for a quick find. I should have trusted my instincts and not my phones GPS as that had me traipsing around in the long grass. TFTC

I actually logged this cache thinking it was a geocaching.com one as there is also one in this interesting little reserve. I really need to keep an eye out on geocaching.com.au caches a bit more.

Found on the Toolbox And Swampy Caching trip of Southern Tasmania.
We started at Cockle Creek this morning and worked our way up from there.
We have been to caves, a point, trigs, quarries, cemeteries and history boards.
Found this one after heading off in the wrong direction (any direction away from GZ is the wrong direction!) until I looked at some previous logs. Once I ascertained better co-ords, the find was made quickly. We rehid the cache a little better as it was nearly out in the open.
Found the other cache whilst we were here.

Hello HuonValleyRoamers thank you for the cache.

As it was Australia Day I just had to go and find a cache Wink

I got up early and went for a walk to find a Trig point before it got too hot. After that I came down to Huonville to get some more caches that I hadn't already found this one of yours was on the list.
I had found a cache here before but still love the spot

This was the second HuonValleyRoamers cache we had looked for this morning. We had not been to the Black Gum Reserve before and found the area to be very peaceful this morning. There were a number of small birds twittering in the bushes and a flock of black cockertoos flew over head while we headed towards the cache site. Their familiar screech could be heard for a while.

We headed to GZ thinking we were sure where the hide would be however we found we were 20m from GZ when we had the container in hand. We sat nearby enjoying the scenery and quiet while we signed the log book. The container and contents were in good condition. We then took a series of coordinate readings as the GPS still insisted we were 20m from the site. The average of our readings was S43° 02.254 E147° 03.523.

Thanks for this cache HuonValleyRoamers and for bringing us to this reserve. It is always good to see areas that are managed and cared for.

The coords but me a little bit away from the cache but I spotted it from a far and we were soon adding our names to the logbook, spotted a couple of names in the log book i recognized too.

Thanks for the cache.

This is my second HuonValleyRoamers cache (another to come later today) and our final cache in Huonville. We spotted it as we walked in so had it out quickly. After signing we added a bit of extra camo so it was a little better hidden. We noticed more names in the log book than on this website.
Thanks for another good size cache HuonValleyRoamers.

With five new caches released last night we felt a drive was in order to check them out. We did them all starting with Randalls Bay then Burton's Reserve, this cache, then Castle Forbes Bay then the Judbury cache last. We spent the day in the area driving in and out of the bays enjoying the rural and water views. We signed the log and knew that OldSaint, the local cacher would have been ahead of us as we had only left home at the time he signed this log. We did manage to beat him to three out of the five caches though as he had other commitments. The cache was well presented and a pleasure to find. We too found that the coords were out but found the cache with the aid of the hint under the deck. TFTC

Friday today; the rest of the week gone and some new caches in the Huon.

I usually take Mum to the hairdresser this morning but there is enough time to go and look for the first of the new caches GA11014 “Huon Valley Roamers Backyard Birds, Black Gum Reserve” at Huonville before taking her to her appointment.

Weather is sunny and fine; 19 degrees Celsius.

As the crow flies, this cache is 2.10 kilometres from home – so a short drive of 5 kilometres will have me nett this cache and return home in time to have Mum at her appointment on time

Arrived at the usual parking spot for this location and follow my GPS to zero, no cache. The search is expanded and under the structure the cache was found right on top of a GC cache also hidden there. My GPS was showing the co-ordinates to be about ten metres out.

Sainted the cache at 0910 hours.
A well placed and stocked cache.

It was only a short walk to the cache, some 0.2 kilometres requiring 248 steps and burning some 617 calories.

Back home, Mum into the car and up to her appointment. Then off to Judbury for another find. Two caches for the day

Thanks for the *FTF*
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.
