Description

Butterflies (Lepidoptera) are insects which also includes moths. Their enchanting aerial dynamics are elusive wonders of nature.

Interesting facts:

*They can range in size from 1/8th inch to almost 12 inches.

*Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees.

*Antarctica is the only continent on which  no Lepidoptera have been found.

*Butterflies and insects have their skeleton on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton. This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don't dry out.

*They feed primarily on nectar from flowers. some derive nourishment from  pollen, tree sap, rotting fruit, dung and dissolved minerals in wet sand and dirt.

*They are important as pollinators for some species of plants.

To log a find for this cache please take a photo of a real butterfly ( not street art/signs etc) that you have come across in your geocaching travels. No need for a GPS to be in the pic as I know how quick you have to be to snap a pic of them.

You can log this cache as many times as you like providing there is someone elses log in between yours.

Maybe a brief description of your butterfly encounter.

Why did we name this cache Flutterbies.......our grand daughter couldn't pronounce butterflies and she called them flutterbies and now that has stuck with us even into her adulthood.

Have fun trying to find and take a photo of a butterfly!!

Flinstone Drive, Pump House Bay, Arthurs Lake, Tasmania

Stopped for morning tea, we spotted a butterfly, out with the camera and 50 shots later we had a suitable snap.

Tassies butterflies are not very colourful, this is an example of our common brown butterfly.

Logging for the Cacheopoly Game.

The beautiful big Orchard Swallowtails are most commonly found near backyard citrus trees. They start off life as ordinary looking caterpillars, fairly accurately described as looking like bird droppings. This one was found in our garden but coordinates are for the general area. Just for the record, butterflies are not easy to get a photo of.... Doh TFTL Gullivers Travels54.

We visited the Butterfly Garden @ Changi Airport T3 Transit when flying form Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. It wasn't the right terminal for us but we caught the little train over to T3 just to visit here

While geocaching in Girraween National Park I stumbled upon this Spotted Jezebel (Delias aganippe). She wasn't camera-shy so I managed a good image to share. I always smile when I see a butterfly Smile

We don't seem to get that many around northern Sydney, apart from a few of the white ones which I suspect are cabbage moths anyway. But I spotted this one on the neighbour's azalea this morning. Thanks Gullivers Travels54 for the cache.

We were at "The Dish" near Parkes NSW having our morning coffee on the southward leg of our trip and as we sat and waited for the coffee and cake to arrive there appeared not to far from where we were seated these little plain butterflies. They were clustering around the ground on the grass. There were about four distinct groups of this plain type of butterfly in the vicinity. It is good to see more and more monarch butterflies in NZ-they seemed to be wiped out a few years ago

Whilst at Lyre trig (Kariong, NSW - TP6179) a couple of butterflies were dancing around. I took many photoes on my iPhone trying to get a good close-up of one in flight. Would have been easier with a proper camera. Got the best shot when one was resting. TFTC! Clan Cerberus

I have had a love for butterflies since my school days. Looking at butterflies was my hobby before Birdwatching! When we are outdoors I still take any opportunity to photograph butterflies. This was taken on one such day out. The Wanderer Butterfly posed beautifully for this photo. TFTC
