Description

They should have been careful what they asked for!

In March 2016, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in Britian made the brave decision to ask the public to provide a name for its new £200million research vessel.  It launched a public poll, allowing anyone to put forward or vote on a proposed name.  Suggestions flooded in, but within days there was an out-and-out favourite - Boaty McBoatface - which went on to amass 124,109 votes after being suggested as a joke.

Despite the silly name attracting unprecedented public interest in the project, Science Minister Jo Johnson decided it just wasn't appropriate.  He instead opted to name the vessel after national treasure Sir David Attenborough, a decision which was unlikely to ruffle too many feathers.  The announcement sparked tongue-in-cheek calls for Sir David to change his name to Boaty McBoatface.

The name Sir David Attenborough was actually fifth in the poll - the second choice was Poppy-Mai, in honour of a tragic tot who lost her brave battle with cancer.  As a nod to democracy, and a sense of humour, Johnson agreed that the Boaty McBoatface name could be given to a remote-control robotic underwater vehicle which will eventually sit on board the main ship. The name has been given to the robotic vessel, but as for RRS (Royal Research Ship) Sir David Attenborough, work to complete her continues.  The pioneering science vessel, capable of staying at sea for 60 days, will launch in 2019 before heading to Antarctica.

This small moveable cache is a souvenir from one of our trips on a Spirit of Tasmania across Bass Strait.  He just had to called this, nothing else would do.  Please move this happy little guy from place to place, preferrably near water, and hide him carefully so he doesn't go MIA.  Happy travels Boaty!

#GA3380 - 17:30; I was unable to head north with Sol de lune yesterday for the Meet the Moveables (NSW Edition), but had a very sneaking suspicion that he may return with some booty after a prisoner exchange. My suspicions were well founded and a plan was hatched for a couple of members of the Gungahlin Chapter of the Cerberus Mob have a meet and greet with the new arrivals. Nice to see a few newer and a couple of older moveables make it down to the National Capital. TFTC sharnie's tribe Very HappyClan Cerberus

The latest Geocaching Australia game runs from 01-Dec-2018 00:00:00 to 31-Jan-2019 23:59:59 AEST

For each qualifying geocache that you hide or find during the game period you will be offered the opportunity to click on a ground tile and reveal what lies beneath.

A moving cache, by nature, may have been moved since you last determined its location. It may have been picked up but not yet rehidden so it's considered 'in-transit'. There is no foolproof method of determining where a cache is simply by the log types that have been placed against the cache.

There are a couple of options to access the parking. A short walk into the bush with some fine scribbly gums to admire. Cache is with a few other moveables. Averaged location. If you see a large, leaning scribbly gum you're nearly there.

I decided to take advantage of a couple flexdays to come up the mountains and stay with my favorite old man
Of course there was a price to pay and I was made to find a few caches to pay for my bread and board, nothing onerous this far but I fear he may have other plans for the next couple days.
Thanks for the cache

While in the area dodging the rain we made the short walk to GZ to grab this new moveable. We have done a few trips on the Spirit of Tasmania. Would have been a windy trip today. Thanks Sharnie's Tribe for the fun moveable. Will move along soon.

Sorry about the lengthy logs. We are currently aiming for a dragon zone virtual verbosity trophy. We have just received the 100 word trophy, so now aiming for the 150 word trophy. For all new GCA cachers, a warning, write a decent log to start with in case you want to get these virtual trophies down the track. Having now passed 2000 GCA finds with a lot of one word logs (on many moveables) makes for a lot of typing now!

We are currently participating in the States of the Nation games which are running from 16 December 2017 until 21 January 2018 and are enjoying tracking and placing caches.

States of the Nation is a real and virtual geocaching scavenger hunt where your home state will compete against other Australian states to find and hide geocaches. Over the 5 week course of the game there will be hundreds of scavenges that you can track down, find and convert into points for your state. Some scavenges will be easy. Some scavenges will be tough. Some scavenges may be impossible. Don't despair. You are not competing just for yourself; you are competing as a state.

There will be a number of scavenges released on a weekly basis but each scavenge will remain until the end of the game. This means even if you decide to join the game part way through, the early scavenges are still available for you to claim. Scavenges will require you to find a geocache, hide a geocache, attend an event or do something else completely different. The game focuses on all aspects of geocaching and so all cache types, sizes, terrain and difficulty will be up for scavenging. TrigPoints, Events, History, Virtual, Webcam, Podcache and Locationless geocaches are all scavengable, so you're not just looking for a box under a bush. Each week there will be a mix of physical, non-physical and locationless geocaches so even if you are not in a geocache rich area, use the locationless component of scavenger series to get out, find something to log and gain points for your state. If you watch the scavenges as they are released you might also spot the 'not so hidden' patterns and plan for future weeks of the series.

Hiding geocaches will also be a large part of the scavenger series, but please remember this is a game of geocaching and geocaches that you hide should be long lasting, be of good quality and you should be proud of what you hide. Please avoid hiding a geocache just for the day so your state can find it before you archive it. Geocaches that exist for a short period of time may result in any claims on that geocache being disqualified. Play creatively, but also play fairly. More geocachers hiding more geocaches makes for more geocaching fun.

Go Tassie, Go Tassie, Go Tassie, Go Tassie Go Tassie Go Tassie Go Tassie

We left Boatie where it has a good view of the coast line from Ulverstone to East Devonport. Boatie will be able to see the spirit leave the mouth of the Mersey River snd watch it head out into Bass Strait

Happy travels little Boatie.

Were visiting fellow geocaching team Sharnie's Tribe when we spotted this happy little ship with a broad grin. He had been waiting to begin his journey so asked for a lift as we left. As he had a preference for positions near the water we will try to find young Boaty a place close to the water.

Thanks Sharnie's Tribe for this cute little moveable we will endeavour to get him out and about again soon. We feel privileged to be able to claim a {FTF} for this cache and be able to launch him on what we hope will be years of adventure travelling around Australia.
