Aus and the bear worked on the puzzle which seemed straight forward except for one question. Realizing that the formula we were using didn’t work for this question a 'what if' moment produced the required result. At GZ the cache was quickly found but the log sheet was just mush and all we had with us today was a supermarket docket which we signed on the back of as proof of the find and placed in the container. Thanks for the puzzle and the cache.

Hello OldSaint thank you for the cache.
As words and I don't get along this one too a little working out.
Reading some other logs I noticed that there was a little ambiguity about one of the questions so after giving it a fair dinkom go before I got some help from a previous finder.
This afternoon I found it quickly.

Ok - One word wrong on my end and some false assumptions.

When this puzzle first appeared we had a go at it but there appeared to be a few problems so we put it aside. We looked at it the next day and found several changes had been made. We now felt confident that that our solution method would probably work. Geochecker didn't like our solution. Visiting daughter looked at the puzzle and suggested we try something for one variable that was not cosistent with the solution method for the other variables and lo and behold we had a solution the checker liked.
We came south today to find a few caches for the State of the Nations game and to catch up with friends at Franklin. As we had to come passed the hide area for this cache on our way from the Eastern Shore to the Southern Outlet we stopped to search for this cache.
The wind was blowing quite strongly and we were glad that the cache was a quick find. Contents were in good condition.
Thanks for the puzzle and the hide Old Saint

I had this quickly solved, but the geochecker didn't agree with me. Having triple-checked my workings, I was sure it was right, so I went out yesterday and didn't find the cache.
Last night I tried treating X in a way that didn't fit the pattern of the rest of the puzzle, and now the geochecker was happy, and the find easily made today (not too far from the previous spot).
Thanks

This was an interesting puzzle that we tried to solve as soon as it was published and we soon had a set of coordinates but unfortunately the geochecker didn't like them but we were sure we were using the right formula. After returning from home from our Christmas break up North we had another look using the same formula but changed one thing and the geochecker was happy. So today is the day to finally sign the log. We located the hide fairly quickly which was good. Thanks OldSaint for the puzzle and the small twist at the end when we thought we had it solved!
Sorry about the lengthy logs. We are currently aiming for a dragon zone virtual verbosity trophy. This log should give us the 100 word trophy, so then it will be the 150 word trophy to aim for!
We are participating in the States of the Nation games which are currently running from 16 December 2017 until 21 January 2018 and hopefully will claim this find against one of the scavenges.
States of the Nation is a real and virtual geocaching scavenger hunt where your home state will compete against other Australian states to find and hide geocaches. Over the 5 week course of the game there will be hundreds of scavenges that you can track down, find and convert into points for your state. Some scavenges will be easy. Some scavenges will be tough. Some scavenges may be impossible. Don't despair. You are not competing just for yourself; you are competing as a state.
There will be a number of scavenges released on a weekly basis but each scavenge will remain until the end of the game. This means even if you decide to join the game part way through, the early scavenges are still available for you to claim. Scavenges will require you to find a geocache, hide a geocache, attend an event or do something else completely different. The game focuses on all aspects of geocaching and so all cache types, sizes, terrain and difficulty will be up for scavenging. TrigPoints, Events, History, Virtual, Webcam, Podcache and Locationless geocaches are all scavengable, so you're not just looking for a box under a bush. Each week there will be a mix of physical, non-physical and locationless geocaches so even if you are not in a geocache rich area, use the locationless component of scavenger series to get out, find something to log and gain points for your state. If you watch the scavenges as they are released you might also spot the 'not so hidden' patterns and plan for future weeks of the series.
Hiding geocaches will also be a large part of the scavenger series, but please remember this is a game of geocaching and geocaches that you hide should be long lasting, be of good quality and you should be proud of what you hide. Please avoid hiding a geocache just for the day so your state can find it before you archive it. Geocaches that exist for a short period of time may result in any claims on that geocache being disqualified. Play creatively, but also play fairly. More geocachers hiding more geocaches makes for more geocaching fun.

A fleeting visit to Hobart today and we managed to find a couple of solved puzzles and this was one of them. A puzzle that had us thinking but worked out in the end. A quick find, sign and replaced before heading back to Launceston.

Goose had told me he was family free for a few hours in the morning so I had a look at this puzzle and came up with some numbers that looked good while I drank my first coffee of the morning.
With coffee and puzzle done I drove round and picked him up, it was a short drive later and we were searching ground zero, with no joy we went over our numbers again goose had a different value for one of the answers so we went and looked there too, what do you know the cache was found in no time at all. Looks like that extra twist was correct after all.
Thanks for the cache and the {*FTF*} at 9.42

I didn't need a cache today as I had the Boxing Day trophy but seriously when there are first to find opportunities who can sit at home and ignore them? As usual, my mate Stainless steel rat picked me up. Interestingly enough we had a different set of coordinates for GZ but when he explained his workings I agreed he was correct. After an extensive search around this area we gave up. I suggested we walk via the other coordinates just in case, it was on the way back to the car. Blow me down, there it was!
I had a bit of fun with this puzzle. One answer jumped out straight away, and other four-letter words for Z jumped out at me that were perhaps inappropriate.
So a nice but slightly unexpected {*FTF*} with SSR 9.42am
Thanks OldSaint
