Description

These two water tanks are the only things left from the

Grass Tree Hill Road Station.

In 1832 Lieutenant-Governor Arthur ordered a new road be built between Risdon and Richmond.

Construction of the Grass Tree Hill Road began in 1833. Despite Bryan’s accusations concerning the Grass Tree Hill Road being built to speed Arthur’s travels to his farm Carrington near Richmond. The road became known as "Carrington Cut". A gang of 50 convicts cleared the land and constructed the road Station.

By 1837 there was a prison barracks with log fence, a cell block, chapel, stone store,a military barracks and quarters for the Commandant and Superintendent.

In 1838 there were139 convict 72 of them working in leg irons.

The road wasn't finished until 1841.

In 1845 a trip to Grass Tree Hill cost 1 shilling and 9 pence if you rode inside the stage coach or 1 shilling and 6 pence if you sat on top.

If you needed to have a rest you could stop at the "Help Me Thru the World Inn" at the top of the hill.

More Information can be found at https://petermacfiehistorian.net.au/publications/dobbers-cobbers/

To log this cache take a photo of yourself standing by the tanks (NO GPS photos) and add it to your log.

I have made this a virtual as I know there is going to be some more work done here and couldn't find any where to hide a cache.

There is plenty of parking at GZ on the western side of Grass Tree Hill Road .

A bit tricky but found it today.

I have driven past here on numerous occasions but have never noticed this significant historical site before. On my last drive past I intended to stop but the road was so busy I missed the stopping point. Today I was early and with no one behind me I managed to make the stop to get the required photo and enjoy the reading of the history. Very Happy

Hi AlbyDangles, thanks for this virtual. I've driven past here many times (sometimes with you) and did a passage control somewhere hereabouts for a trial once, but I've but really noticed this significant site before - so thanks for pointing it out to me.
Out and about solo today picking up a few caches along the way, on my last day of leave - back to work tomorrow.
Cheers, EPs.

We were in the area for a family visit this weekend and found ourselves with a few free minutes. So what do you do, go caching of coursed. Had a look to see what was available relatively close by and decided to visit this location. Once at GZ we took the required photo and then found a nearby GC cache as well. TFTC and the history

I could have sworn i logged this ages ago, but i'm here today so i'll log it now, thanks for the cache Alby

Grabbed this one as we headed to Hobart from Richmond this morning.
Travelling the wrong way for easy access but managed to get across the road in the campervan to the parking area without incident.
Really impressed with these tanks and they were not at all what I was expecting to see. So this cache is a typical example of what caching should be all about.
Glad this one was only a photo as the dog in the nearby house was certainly announcing our presence.
Thanks.

Thanks so much for drawing our attention to these wonderful historic hand hewn stone water troughs. We have been to the ruins of several convict road and probation stations but not to this one. Also, thank you for adding the history of the area to your cache description. It would be really good to have an interpretive panel here. I’m sure many of the tourist who visit Richmond would also enjoy seeing them. Thanks again Alby.

Whilst caching in the southern part of the state this weekend, we took the opportunity to go to Grass Tree Hill. We had driven past the site on numerous occasions but had never noticed the water troughs. It is pleasing to see the work being done to clean up the area and to make this important past of the history of the area more visible. Thanks AlbyDangles for the cache and for bringing us to see this aspect of our past. The required photo has been added to the Gallery.
