Description

Located on Lighthouse Road near Tacking Point Lighthouse is the location of the lighthouse keepers cottage.

Note: There are questions about your visit to this location to answer in order to log a find.

Tacking Point Lighthouse stands at an elevation of 34m, is 8m high.
The Tacking Point Lighthouse was a fixed white light exhibited from a brick tower and was automated in 1919 and the lighthouse keeper was withdrawn in 1920. The remains of the lighthouse keeper's cottage can be found next to the lighthouse. Both the lighthouse and the keepers cottage were built at the same time. The total cost of both buildings was £4,650.

The cottages were a standard four room dwelling including parlour and bedrooms with a central passage, rear lean-to kitchen, verandah, outside privy and water tanks.

Typically lighthouse keepers were preferably married men to negate the isolation. In addition to maintaining the lamp and keeping the light going, the keepers were also responsible for maintaining shipping and accounts records and undertaking meteorological recordings every three hours.

Stopped for breakfast here on the drive home from Christmas at the grandparents. It had been pouring with rain for the past two hours of driving but fortune smiled on us and the blue skies appeared when we hit Port Macquarie. Great spot for a break. The kids were keen for a swim but both beaches had some pretty gnarly waves so we looked around the lighthouse and headed off. We couldn't get the questions up on our phone so we read all the signs and took photos for later reference.
Thanks for bringing us to this awesome location!

The forecast was for a long and persistent storm, but it turned our to be small and short-lived, so I decided to go for a walk down to the beach, and back via this point. I gathered the necessary data, wrote this log (too meta?) then headed on my way. TFTHC

Getting blown away during a rain event centred on the Mid North Coast! Managed to hold the phone, umbrella and read the board while being buffeted by the wind and rain. Great spot on a sunnier day I'm sure!

Visiting family for the weekend, and went shopping in town this morning, I decided to stop and enjoy the view here on the way through. I couldn't help but notice there were unfound (by me) GCA trig point, virtual, and history caches all here as well as a GC EC. Okay, so these were the only reason I came here. Hahaha.

Lovely spot. Bit windy, hazy, and chopped up water. Still enjoyed the views though. Love the blue paint highlights on the lighthouse too.

Thanks for the history cache. Smile

I was here on Sunday for the earthcache but didn't realise there was also 2 GA caches to be had. So back I went today, which I didn't mind at all since the lighthouse offers such great views.

We dropped down here for the trig, and then noticed the history cache was here too - after working out how to get the questions from the phone browser we were good. Another great lighthouse visit.... Thanks!

our first attempt at a GCA virtual. thanks for placing.

3 GCA caches in one spot - it doesn't get much better than that. And a bitumen road right to GZ.
A very popular place too today but we still managed to luck a parking space at the top.
Not much remaining of the lighthouse keepers cottage here, unlike the one we visited at Smoky Cape yesterday.
Thanks.

#GA3861 - 07:55; On the way home from the Gold Coast with the geohoney and we stopped for the night at Port Macquarie. Decided to collect a few of the local caches on an earlyish morning run. This was the second stop and in addition to the trig and virtual, picked up this history cache as well. Initially started at the wrong sign board, but on checking the GPSr, soon found myself in the right spot across the road and with all of the required information to hand. The real benefit of the visit though was taking in the great views from Tacking Point in both directions and reading up on some of the local history. Caching in the area with whitewebbs and this was one of the caches we found. A beautiful location and interesting history. The signs are currently fenced as the road is being upgraded but we managed to access them.

Day 79 Mainland trig (now heading to OZGM)
Out and about with Tassie Trekkers caching around Port Macquarie and surrounds and we stopped to photograph the lighthouse trig and do the history cache. As the area is totally fenced off we went in behind a fence and took photos of the sign. The area is being revamped from June to September. Access to the lighthouse is via the beach. TFTC

We are travelling to Sydney and stopped in Port for the night and took the chance to find some GA caches TFTC

We are regularly in Wauchope visiting family and we love coming here and looking for dolphins and whales. We saw a large pod of dolphins today, but no whales.
The information for the cache was located quickly. Thanks for showing us the history of the place again.

We have lived in Port Macquarie for over 14 years but have never learnt about the history of the lighthouse. The coastal views from here are always stunning and during Winter and Spring make for a great whale watching spot.
Thanks Throsbyonchurch Very Happy

We'd seen this new listing not long after we got home from our last visit to Port Macquarie and didn't expect it to still be unfound after the States of the Nation. But it was! We've been to the lighthouse many times but today we visited again to find the answers to the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage. Enjoyed the bike ride to this popular spot and the strong refreshing wind when we got there. Pretty happy with a {FTF} as well! TFTC Throsbyonchurch
