Description
Lake Gwelup Reserve, a 73-hectare multi-purpose reserve located in the suburb of Gwelup, is an area popular for bird watching, bush walking and a range of other outdoor activities. Once connected to a chain of swamps and lakes to the north of the Perth CBD, Lake Gwelup played an integral part in the development of the area, and remains as an important recreational and ecological feature today. Known as a place of cultural significance for Nyoongar people, the name Lake Gwelup could be derived from the Aboriginal word “Gwelgannow”, meaning ‘to shift position’, or the Aboriginal name ‘Kwilup’ which is the place of the ‘Kwilim bird’ or ‘Coot'.
