Description
For the History Buffs
The first steel poppet head erected on Bendigo was over the Victoria Quartz Mine on Victoria Hill. The steel open lattice braced poppet head was set in position in 1895 after having been manufactured by local engineering firm of A.Roberts and Sons.
There are a number of poppet heads still standing in Bendigo, going from south to north, a modern head frame erected by Western Mining Corporation over the old Carshalton Mine in 1989.
The Carshalton site is now the base of operations for Bendigo Mining and their Swan Decline which commenced being made in 1998.
A tubular steel poppet head stands over the Nell Gwynne Reef Mine, this last operated in 1949, it is off McDougall Road, Golden Square.
The Deborah mine off Abel Street has a sectioned pressed steel poppet head, nearby on the same reef and off Eve Street, North Deborah, whilst the Central Deborah is in Violet Street off High Street.
In a elevated position is the tubular poppet head of the Central Nell Gwynne off Coath Street and just to the east a poppet head has been re erected over the historic Victoria Quartz Mine. Originally the poppet head now over the Victoria Quartz stood over the Koch’s Pioneer Mine in Long Gully.
Another Western Mining erected poppet head stands off Caldwells Road over the Williams United shaft.
Most northerly of existing poppet heads is over the New Prince of Wales Mine, this is off Hopkins Avenue at Eaglehawk.
Logs
Yesterday i found my first few GA caches but i had completely forgotten that there is an app for it. Instead i copied out the coords into geooh go. Today i am searching for a few more and testing out the app.
Wandering home after visiting Mildura yesterday and staying the night in Swan Hill.
A few caches were targeted on my way past.
A nice quick find here in a secluded, historic area.
As with those who have been here before me, I received quite a start!
Thanks goes to The Morris for the placement and also to WazzaAndWenches for the ongoing upkeep.

GAFF 1
When we got close to the hide one of us approached from above and the other from below. Good coordinates soon led us to a well concealed cache container, even though we both took a step back when we turned the container over.
After signing the log we admired they workmanship that was involved in the construction of this cache and the thought that had gone into the cache placement. We also enjoyed the information provided about the history of mining in the immediate area.
Our thanks to The Morris for a very enjoyable all round caching experience. This cache certainly deserves a recommendation.
Making a late run to the event, but will hopefully get there on time.
dalerious found this one first and handed it to me to open, and I promptly dropped it.
No damage done, all intact, nothing was injured in the process, and dalerious is still killing himself laughing!
