Description

A memorial to Captain James Stirling.

HMAS STIRLING was selected to honour the name of Captain James Stirling, Royal Navy, the naval officer who landed on Garden Island in 1827 and returned in June, 1829 to found not only the first European settlement in Western Australia, but also the first free colony anywhere in Australia. Stirling’s makeshift camp was set-up on the craggy rock outcrop on the eastern side of the island which today is known as Cliff Head and is the site of a memorial. HMAS Stirling’s crest is based on the Stirling family coat-of-arms.aptain Jamers Stirling.(Naval Histotic Society)

You will need to get a pass to come here by land or come by boat for a beach landing. If coming by boat there will be a 2-3 mt sand dune to climb, hence the Difficulty and Terrain levels.

To log this cache you will need a photo of the memorial and log a story of your adventure to make the claim.

I talked a friend into coming for a run today. We parked near this memorial and ran up to the nearby trig point. Quick photo there and a short jog back down the hill to this one and we were done.

I’ve been here many times and always admire the view and history so thank you for bringing me back again.

Cheers

Slight detour today, and another visit to this memorial. One of my favorite locations on the Island. From here you can sense the history. You see the magnificent coast line of Cockburn sound and glimpse of what it may have looked like to the settlers.

Thanks for a new visit to this site. DancingClappingVery Happy

Happy to be able to log a find on this one. My camera was on the blitz on the day, but others in the group were happy to take pics and share them with me. Thanks ROSS1957, not only for this smiley, but also for your outstanding contribution on the day. Cheers!!

I have lived in Perth for over 30 years and have never been on Garden island, not even when we used to have a boat!! So thanks Larry for organizing this trip and Ross for 'talking me into coming along'. I had a great time in great company and enjoyed every minute of it. I am sure most people in Perth wouldn't know this Memorial exists, I didnt either! thanks for the cache and the safe ride to and fro skipper Ross!
