Description

VIC. State Survey Marks

This is for logging the VIC State survey markers.

They are normally a small bronze disc with a serial number. But Some do not have a serial number on them. They can be found in the most surprising places. I have seen them on bridges, in the middle of footpaths, even on the side of monuments.

To log the find:

1. You need to post a picture of the marker with a GPS Unit beside it.

2.  Please include co-ords

3. Write a description of where the marker is located.

4. And just for fun, give your survey marker a terrain rating to let us all know how hard it was for you to reach it.

Feel free to Log as many as you Find

NB: I have Borrowed This Format (With Permision) form tronador

Logging for the Cacheopoly Game

27-Dec-23
A Survey Marker at the end of my street Smile Out for an early morning walk, trying to lose some of that Christmas trifle and I remembered this was literally at the end of my street, so I grabbed a quick snap on the way home just to log for the 2023 Cacheopoly game.

19-Aug-22
MELBOURNE
VICTORIA

I found this one whilst walking around doing history caches. Very Happy

08-Jun-22
POINT LONSDALE VICTORIA

This was found on a retaining wall near the beach. It must be an old one as the penalty for interference is 50 pounds. Only a short easy walk from the car park so D1. Very Happy

01-Jan-22
Embery's Lookout Mount Mittemetite - near Corryong Vic. Fantastic Views across Corryong to the Snowies.
I use my phone to cache so it is also my camera - hence the photo of my foot beside the marker. My fist find in VIC!
D5 (needed a tool - AKA the car to get us 16km up the track) T2.

21-Aug-18
According to the SMES map, this one is designated as Narree Worran PM 1
Located on the side of Ridge Rd in Kallista, Victoria.
It is 419.6 metres above sea level.
The survey tablet was installed on 21 Dec 1944 and the beacon in 1953.
Observations taken from here were used in the preparation of the Two Inch to One Mile topo maps of the area.
(Thanks for that bit of info Geoff)
.
A GC multi, GCA Trig and a State Survey Marker.
Hat trick! Clapping
.
Thanks Rigger64 Very Happy

This survey mark is at the Center of Victoria, and there's a plaque to prove it Dancing
T rating is a 1 as it's on flat ground and there's room to park a car right beside the marker.

14-Aug-17
Up at Mount Lofty and saw this one, I was hoping it would have had its own cache, but this is good enough, thanks

16-Jun-17
S 38° 21.560 E 145° 18.406
Found this marker whilst at the trigpoint on french island. Turns out it had been buried a little but some of the locals had dug up to uncover it.

06-Apr-17
Another Survey Marker in the footpath on one of my daily walks. This one is on Weidlich Rd, near the corner of Cambrain Crt, in Greensborough.

No photos inside the pit (this time) as there was a red back spider and her clutch of eggs under the hatch.

01-Mar-17
This is the second Survey Marker that I found on my daily walks near my home. It is just over 160m from my previous find/claim.
There is dirt covering the disc but it does not appear to have any identifying marks. It does not appear on the Vic SMES.

22-Feb-17
I was out walking in my neighbourhood yesterday when I literally walked over two survey markers. I went back today with my camera, GPRs and a screwdriver (to open the hatch). What an amazing find. This one is in better condition so I am logging it first. It is on the corner of two streets, on the footpath, so is a T1.

SR, 80, H38C

A Survey Marker at Foggs Lookout, Eildon. Found while my husband and I were enjoying lunch.

29-May-16
We were here for a different type of search but stumbled across this after a DNF on the other.
It's officially known as YEUNGROON PM 8 and is beside the Yeungroon hall to the west of Wedderburn.

19-May-16
Corio PM 6 - I've never seen a concrete marker like this before. You Victorians sure do make it hard to find 'em! This one is at the corner of Yarra St and Little Malop St, Geelong.

23-Apr-16
The SMES gives this PM the title of Wappon PM 30. Found while coming up here for a GC cache, well worth the short drive. Sun was just about to set so we had some really lovely colours lighting up the landscape.

19-Apr-16
This is a pretty terrible photo, but that's as close as we got to it. SMES tells me this is Annulus 1985 which is also known as Popes Eye. Remarkably, there's a GC cache there! Found right in the middle of Port Philip Bay.

19-Apr-16
The SMES maps say that this one is Corio PM 125. I'm amazed at how old it must be given that it refers to a penalty for interference in pounds! Found along Western Beach in Geelong.

17-Apr-16
Survey marker just beside the Jeffcott South School Bus Route Rd, near Dooboobetic, between Charlton & St Arnaud

12-Apr-15
Found this Geodetic Survey marker at Reeds Lookout in the Grampians, marked no. 82202. There were wonderful views to the north, west and south from here across the pretty Grampians Ranges in western Victoria.
Thanks for the locationless cache Rigger64!
Cheers

The trig tower at Cast Iron Point, just a short scramble up the slope from the road, and across from one of the best views of the Thomson Dam.

28-Oct-14
Out for my morning walk and actually had my phone with me so decided to snap a couple of survey marks along the way.

Both are in Riverina Parade Echuca. This is the second and is "on the bend" near Bowen St.

28-Oct-14
Out for my morning walk and actually had my phone with me so decided to snap a couple of survey marks along the way.

Both are in Riverina Parade Echuca. This is the first and is opposite Alastair Crt.

26-Oct-14
We were looking (unsuccessfully) for a GC cache just a couple of meters away and spotted this survey marker buried in the grass.

28-Apr-14
Out for a walk in Mt Lofty Park - a quiet relatively isolated park on the banks of the Yarra, north east of Melbourne. There are some great views of the Yarra Valley from the top of the hill. It was to take in these views that we stepped off the track and up a small mound where we found this survey marker. Wasn't expecting that - but that is the nature of survey markers. Terrain 2.5 (because its a bit of a walk up). Difficulty 1 (its not hidden after all).

13-Apr-14
A survey marker on the edge of the Joop Parish, at the intersection of the Ellam-Willenabrina Rd with McKenzie Rd, on the road verge near the double gates into the paddock

06-Apr-14
The Pullut silo is a trig point. The silo is on the Yaapeet branch line a grain only rail-line. Road access is via the Pullut West Rd from the Dimboola-Rainbow Rd, easy to see.

17-Nov-13
The marker forms a waypoint for a multicache on Specimen Hill in Bendigo. The approach is via a gentle uphill path from the west or a steeper path from the north. Around GZ are the remains of many mines from the long gone gold mining boom of the 1800's. The marker does not have a serial number but did, once upon a time, contain the info required to complete the next step of the multi cache.

21-May-13
This Survey Mark is in the middle of the path that circles the Aquatic Reserve in Echuca. The path is the top of the levee bank that separates the reserve from the Murray River and protects the reserve from flood waters. The terrain is flat and level for the entire length of the path circling the reserve.

27-Apr-13
Found this mark right next to a trig on quarry hill near Tocumwal.
Nice easy drive to it in a 4wd.
Thanks for the cache.
Roostaman.

25-Apr-13
Found this trig tower at Propodollah on the north side of Laceys Road near its intersection with Cutline Road.
It is on private property some distance inside a large paddock.
There is a blue painted survey pole on the fenceline.
The tower has been hit by a piece of farm machinery and is only supported by 3 legs.

21-Jan-13
This Survey Mark is on top of a Flagstaff Hill west of Ballarat. There is a GC cache, a TP and also a lookout tower on the hill. Further along the summit are a number of TV and radio towers.
We were returning from a few days at a GC Event held at Nelson when we ventured up the hill to claim the TP and GC caches but forgot to log this GCA at the same time.

01-Jan-13
Whilst down at Hastings with the family a couple of days ago I spotted a survey mark on the pier then further along a second! Both were on the concrete structure, not the wooden section.

The coordinates of this log are for the one closest to shore (Tyabb PM 320?).
The seaward mark (Tyabb PM 330?) was located at S38° 18.500' E145° 11.910'

16-Dec-12
Stepped on/over this while walking between two caches at Moorooduc ... apparently I log it here?

State Survey mark, appears to be stamped "467".

Survey mark was right next to the road and you could probably drive your car over it if you wanted.

27-Nov-12
Walkerville South survey marker, found in the turn-around carpark beside the boat-ramp, at the beginning of the lime kilns walk.
Terrain - easy, you could lean out of your car to record this one.

04-Sep-12
I parked on the Yarra Boulevard to nick up to a nearby park and pick up a cache and when I jumped out of the car I nearly stood on a State Survey Marker Cool . It is set into the footpath beside the road just near the overhead railway bridge. As you can see from one of the attached pics it has a great view of the Yarra.
A bit of scooping to remove the worm castings, a quick couple of pictures and I was off to find the nearby traditional cache.

I'd rate it a 1/1 as you really couldn't miss it even if you were driving past Smile .

24-Jul-12
I came across this survey mark in the footpath after tackling a nearby geocache. The cover was easily lifted with the aid of one of my keyring screwdrivers, but the mark itself didn'y reveal much detail even after scraping away the soil/worm castings. There as a kind of a raised "H" pattern to it, but without a flash the GPS's camera doesn't reveal much....

08-Jul-12
Nice climb and great view, will come back for fireworks and hope to meet some other cachers!

20-Apr-12
Today was the fourth day of our excursion out of Tasmania touring from Melbourne to Canberra and return via Gippsland. We visited a number of towns and areas today between Bairnsdale and Cann River and we were lucky enough to find some caches along the way. Again it was overcast at times with some very infrequent showers, we have had another excellent day. We had planned to try to complete this cache on this trip. Our research showed that a survey marker from the Bairnsdale area was yet to be logged. We located a map of the permanent survey markers in the Bairnsdale area online and armed with this information, went in search this morning. We found two quite quickly but when we lifted the lids, we discovered that the pits were full of sand. However at the third survey point we visited we found a marker sitting on a plinth in the pit. A minor clean of the marker and the obligatory photo was taken. This Victorian Permanent Survey Marker was found on the corner of Goold and Anderston Streets and, although there isn't any numbering on the survey marker itself, the map shows to to be "Bairnsdale PM 399". A photo has been added to the Gallery. TFTC

14-Apr-12
Whilst out today I discovered this survey marker on Yarra Boulevard which doesn't seem to have been recorded here yet. I thought at first it was a fire hydrant as there was a blue marker sign on the fence, then I saw the survey marker cover. Opening it, there was nothing to be seen but digging down through the dirt the marker disc was uncovered.
After some work on SMES I tracked it down as being "Boroondara PM 66"
Photos show with the blue marker sign and marker cover lifted, and two close ups.
D1.5 T1.5 - more if the place is overrun with "psycholists" circling this closed off loop of road (they just started arriving as I was leaving)... Often the carparking is hopeless near here too.

01-Apr-12
I've known about this marker for quite a while as it seems to be in a very strange location so when I stumbled across this 'cache', I knew that this was the one to log. As we were in Heidelberg this afternoon, it was the perfect opportunity so we took the appropriate pickies at 16:00.

On trying to find out more info on the marker though, there was nothing to be gleaned from the government website Shocked and as such, I can provide no other info on the marker Crying or Very sad.

Given that it's in the middle of the footpath, I think you could safely say that this is a 1D/1T Very Happy.

Thanks Rigger64.

25-Jan-12
Whilst tackling the "What a crap idea" geocache (GC3170H) I spotted this survey mark neat the start of the footpath track heading down from the general store carpark. I believe it is the "Queesntown PM 13 / MMB 4303" marker

01-Jan-12
Have been looking for a Vic Survey Marker on my recent trips to Melbourne, but it took a holiday trip to finally grab one. Managed to grab this one while driving between Bendigo and Ballarat, whilst finding the trig as well.

Nice to finally grab one.... TFTL

12-Nov-11
Found this survey marker on top of a hill in Woodlands park while doing the Woodlands 100 power trail.
I'd give it a D1.5 T3 because it was a bit of a hike and then a scramble.

07-Aug-11
A chance for a three cache stop on a visit to Ballarat to see some friends. Grabbed while doing the Guildford Lookout Trig and nearby GC.

05-Jun-11
Found by my young niece when hiding the movable Camognome.
Good one Elise!

15-May-11
This one is in Avoca Victoria.
Easy drive by find too.

07-Mar-11
I was walking down the street here and thought I was passing a water main.

Hang on a minute, thats a Survey Mark.

Wombat PM 275, to be precise.

Its in excelent condition adjacent to the footpath.

Easy to find with a 1 star terrain.

TFTC Very Happy

27-Feb-11
Under the unusual Sugarloaf Reservoir trig there's a survey mark so got two for one.

22-Feb-11
Official name is "Cut-paw-paw PM 50"
Stumbled on this survey mark whilst doing a couple of local caches. I created TP5618, but was informed that Survey Marks are listed here instead.

This one is a very simple drive-by.
Difficulty: 1 Terrain: 1

04-Feb-11
This one serves as a marker for the former trig on Arthurs Seat. It was a rainy old day and I managed to grab this shot between downpours. You can see the amount of water inside the marker hole. It's wheelchair accessible so terrain 1. Nearby is the GC cache "Tragedy at Elevation 305".
Wonderful views here on a clear day, sadly it wasn't but I was happy to have a break from the Sydney heat on my brief Victorian visit.

16-Jan-11
Double whammy here with a trig poing standing right over the top Laughing This one was found at Porepunkah Trig - sometimes it pays to look down. Views are tremendous on a clear day & we were certainly treated to that today.

Difficulty: 1 Terrain: 2.5 (4WD compatable OR rent-a-car)

06-Jan-11
On my way to another cache from the wrong direction, I stumbled across this survey mark. Albida.

08-Dec-10
This one was just across the boarder in victoria. Stopped here to grab a nearby cache and thought hey I havent got one of these yet. Was right next to a park at the end of a dead end TFTC
Terrain rating was a one. Got out of the car and it was there

07-Nov-10
Nearly stumbled across this one (literally) whilst at the Granya Trig Point. Great place to visit as there are beautiful views from up there. Survey Mark is located behind the Fire Tower.

Terrain Rating: 2 (we drove) however hiking would incur more stars

04-Nov-10
Stumbled across this one going behind a tree for a pit stop.

rating 1 for diff and gumboots for terrain

Located this one in Bendigo out in the Spring Gully area just off Autumn Gully Road.

29-Sep-10
Located this survey mark in Benalla. This is the first one I have seen that is a square.

Found this survey mark while in Bendigo for an event. The terrain would be rated as a 1.5 and located just off the road.

25-Sep-10
Found while walking up behind the Pinnacle Valley Resort in the new estate. 1/1 Cool

23-Sep-10
I'd run across this survey mark in Yarra Bend Park (just off the Yarra Blvd.) before but forgotten to log it until now. This time it was a quick jump out of the car, a slight scramble and a 5 m walk. Call it a 1 difficulty and 2 terrain.

02-Sep-10
Found on a fantastic morning caching on Huons Hill in Wodonga. Grabbed the GC Puzzle, the Trig and this locationless Marker today. Fantastic views and great fun. Number is faded but I think its 11 132.
Cheers from Sydney!

14-Aug-10
This survey mark is at the base of the Guildford lookout. It's only a short distance from the main road but the road up is short and steep made more fun by the loose gravel surface.

01-Aug-10
Found this one doing the Grumpy Ol' Troll 2 multicache (GC1DCMT)
I believe it's called "Boroondara PM 126" (MMB7439) if I got the right information from:
https://services.land.vic.gov.au/landchannel/content/surveyMarkIntroduction
I used the map to locate it. I don't know how to calculate the MGA94 Easting/Northings to confirm the position but but didn't see any others listed nearby.

As usual, I used my GPS's in-built camera so it's not in the photo (but it does give me geotag data which is very handy with these things Smile ) and resized 800x600.

Posted a month later - I didn't think to look for a log for survey marks...

24-Jul-10
Found while doing a nearby macamob cache. Terrain 1

GLENMONA PM 24

Found this one whilst caching in the area, Originally logged as TP5403 Avoca Area only to be informed it was a Bench mark not a Trig point, silly me thought they were the same thing

23-May-10
This marker is located under the Gable End trig point. Our group of 2 4wds and 3 trailbikes visited this spot today after having a very enjoyable bbq about 400 mtrs away. Weather was perfect for touring the High country today. I would rate the terrain on this one a 4 as the tracks can be very slippery with plenty of rocks. These tracks are closed Queens birthday week-end till Melbourne Cup day I think.

10-May-10
Located this marker at one of the best views in Victoria. It's a bit of a climb and bushbash through the regrowth at this time but worth it. I'd rate the terrain at about 3 but I love climbing mountains Smile

12-Apr-10
Walking along Murphy Street Wangaratta and saw this PMS on the footpath. Strange there is one at each end of this block. This one is on the corner of Ely Street. 1/1

12-Apr-10
Having beakfast in Wangarata on the way home. Walked across ths PMS on the corner of Murphy Street and the other end of the block from Ely Street. 1/1.

07-Mar-10
On the way to a cache I came across this Survey Marker.
It is located on a bridge in Docklands (?), towards Docklands Park. On the RHS of the bridge when facing north just where the hand rail starts.

As this area is very wheelchair friendly, I would have to say that the terrain rating is a 1. VERY VERY easy to get to, close to public transport too!

02-Mar-10
This survey mark is at the Guildford Lookout. We had been here before but stopped to grab this marker. The terrain was OK once at the top but the road in was steep and the car slid around on the loose gravel on the last bit near the top.

18-Oct-09
Found in the Granites Conservation Park while completing another cache (Telstra Towers #1) and looking to see if there was a trig point as well. Great spot for a picnic lunch. Terrain is pretty easy, probably a 1.5 except for the huge rock its on which takes it up to a 2.

FlyingPigSquadron has landed!
Geodetic Survey Marker on Mt. Nicoll Fish Creek set near Lookout. In memory of first settlers

17-Apr-09
I was scoping out a spot for a new cache and just happened to come across this marker. It was quite unexpected, although it's at the top of a significant mount and I was most pleased to "discover" it Smile

01-Feb-09
This trip point in at the carpark for Mt Oberon at Wilsons Prom. I took the cheaters way out on this day and drove (rather than walking up) as it was sooooo windy. Terrain for this was therefore 1 and is wheelchair friendly. The marker is just next to the lookout.

29-Jan-09
This survey mark was used in the construction of the Upper Yarra Reservior (Warburton) and is one of about 10 in the area. A great spot to camp and picnic. A terrain rating of 1 for this one. TFTC

26-Jan-09
This trig point marks the top of Mt Dissapointment just to the west of Kinglake National Park. It was a short walk from where you park the car so terrain would prolly be about 2. TFTC, its a good one to keep me entertained!

10-Nov-08
This is very near the top of Mount Oberon. It was the starting point for "It's over on..." before if got fuggled.

A good uphill trek from the carpark.
