Description

The Penguin Cradle Trail, one  of Tasmania's  Eight Great Bushwalks, is an 80km walk that takes you from Penguin, a town on the  North West Coast to the northern bdry of the Cradle Mountain NP. The walk  gives  a variety of experiences  ranging  from coastal views  to mountain panoramas, from walking along a wild river  to climbing over mountain ranges.

The PCT difficulty varies from easy/medium on the northern sections to quite difficult from Gunns Plains to Loongana Rd. and quite hard up over the Black Bluff Range and onto the Cradle Mt. NP.

Track notes and maps are available at.. http://www.nwwc.org.au/index.php/penguin-cradle-trail

Geocaches will be released in sections where possible to aid access, but will take some months to complete.

To complete the PCT series and to log the last cache, geocachers MUST LOG every geocache plus there will be randomly placed Penguin caches, where you will need to note which actual PCT # the penguin has been placed. These numbers will be required to access the last cache, which will have an appropriate reward for effort.

Most of the cache logs are in bison tubes, inside another container. A match is placed in the log to aid in rolling back up...so PLEASE make sure it goes back in to help other cachers.

All caches except the Penguins have an inkstick...so please take one with you plus notepad to record the Penguin #'s.

SO....ARE YOU up for a challenge?

If so...GLTA.....and please take all safety precautions at ALL TIMES.

Enjoy!

Hearty congrats to Sharnie's Tribe for FTF...well done.

Today with the company of Trimbletas we completed the penguin to cradle track series and and a few others. We found 25 caches along the way with only 1 that we didn’t find. We majorly underestimated how long this walk would take from the start to hardstaff creek, there was a lot of challenges along the way. Once we finally made it to hardstaff creek we had to make a decision do we try to go out via the farm at purtons flats (we knew the farmer) or do we walk back. When we got back to where the pct track went off the gravel road we thought whether to go back along the river or to follow the gravel road out to dial road, decision was made to walk the gravel road back to dial road and have someone pick us up to take us back to the car at the start. The hill up from the pct track was brutal but once we got up it it was fairly easy walking till we had to climb up to dial road. Overall was a long but enjoyable day really had a great time completing this series.

We were in the area today getting some SOTN caches that Mr Beetle had solved the night before.
We couldn't drive by this one without stopping and the cache was quickly found in the first place we searched.
Another well protected log sheet!!!
One day we will tackle this trail but I suspect it will have to be in many stages.
Thanks.

Sir Altaire and I went on a short walk along the first part of this trail. They had done these caches before and were just out for a walk with me. This first one by the car was easy to find.

Was in the area looking for other caches, so thought I better grab a couple of the series. Bumped into a gentleman that I would next see while I was looking for number 10 in the series
TFTC.
Took the longer way to walk to this cache, and then it took me quite a while to actually find cache.
Found this cache on a 2 day trip to the NW, covering over 1000 kms and finding around 100 caches of both GCA and GC

Mr whitewebbs, Mr Tassie Trekkers a goose and an egg (sounds like the start of a joke, but no joke) headed off early to walk the PCT trail. The walk started at the southern end at #23 and after 6 hours and 14 kms later we arrived at Penguin Cradle Trail No. 1 and the pick up point. It was a great trail with great company, fantastic weather and a great series of caches to find. Thanks sirius Tas for placing the caches along it. We found the whole series of the PCT caches and quite a few others along the way. It was an area Mr W had not been in before and he really enjoyed the trail. A favourite for the series TFTC

We made it! All 23 caches (plus a few others) found and what a walk it was. Great scenery, varied terrain, plenty of caches and great company. Thanks sirius Tas for the experience. Within minutes of finishing the walk we were guzzling icy cold beer and cider. We recorded the penguins and will store that away for a day that we need them Wink

Even though this was the start of our walk this was the last cache we did today. Hadn't been in caching mode until about number 4 or so. Anyway no one around making for a trouble free find. Thanks Sirius Tas. No doubt we'll get around to doing the rest of the PCT caches as time goes on.

Hi Sirius
An unexpected call from relatives had Mum and I take a trip to the North West Coast on the 11th of May to visit with her brother in the Latrobe Hospital
As a result, I was able to take advantage of the situation and do some caching today
After finding caches around East Devonport this morning before our visit to the hospital today, I came over here and started the trail walk

Weather: 13 degrees Celsius Fine, sunny and blue skies with some cloud

Travel: For the day, I totalled 14.91 kilometres burning 2293 calories which required 19907 steps Needless to say, my legs are not in LOVE with me at the moment but they will learn to forgive me.

A quick find not far from the car park
Had a couple of muggles I had to wait for before starting the search
Sainted at 1120 hours
Enjoyed the various fungi on the way to the second cache
All good with the cache
TFTC and cheers

We needed a few DZ cache finds for today and had ear marked the first few on this trail. After checking the weather forecast we decided to tackle the walk early this morning - a good decision in hind sight as it is teeming at the moment.

After leaving the car park we headed to the first cache and, due to good coordinates and hint we soon had a familiar cache in hand. The container and contents were in very good condition. We were the only people in the area for a change and could search without the need for muggle evasion tactics. This is uncommon here as the area is very popular with locals and visitors. Unlike the previous finder we were here as it was getting light.

Congratulations Sharnie's Tribe on your FTF

Thanks Sirius Tas for this cache and the series. We are certainly looking forward to walking this trail again after an absence of many years.

This one was a quick find just as it started to get dark. We've been to this general area caching before but great to have a new one to search for. No other names in the logbook so claiming FTF at 6.05pm. TFTC
