Description

After attending the OzGeoMuster over Easter 2018 we headed North and stopped at Lightning Ridge and as Mrs W loves history caches, another one has been created. We had actually stopped on the other side of the road to view Stanley the Emu (which has a GCA cache nearby), so now there are two smileys on offer in the area.

If you have ever wondered how Lightning Ridge got its name, then this plaque reveals all.

Lightning Ridge was originally known as Nettleton's Hill after Charles Nettleton who discovered opal in the the district in 1902 but was later renamed Warrangulla by the New South Wales Lands Department but after World War I it was named Lightning Ridge.

Please answer the following questions from the plaques at GZ and select the correct answers by choosing questions and answers under Actions on the RH side of the cache page. When you select the answers correctly you will receive a code to log to claim a smiley. Please copy and paste this code into the "Codeword" box when logging the find.

1. What marks the spot where Lightning Ridge got its name?

(a) this plaque

(b) this rock

(c) this information board

2. The village was proclaimed in what year?

(a) 1907

(b) 1908

(c) 1909

3. What month was the name gazetted in 1963?

(a) May

(b) June

(c) July

4. The facility stands as a tribute to 'Oxford' Terry ??? ?

(a) Basford

(b) Haye

(c) Parker

wow! and now we know how Lightning Ridge got its name Shocked
Thanks for the cache Smile

Shepherd, dog, AND 600 SHEEP struck by lightning?!?!

Wayn0 just taught me about "cows in series", so I guess that may have happened, maybe. Or were they all huddled for shelter from the storm under the one tree that was struck? Would have to be a big tree!

Another good spot to stop and learn some history. The kids enjoyed finding the answers to the questions.

That must have been one impressive lightning strike.

Thanks for the history cache!

After driving past a few times, we stopped and checked out the area, I get the lightning part, not sure about the ridge part, as it is pretty flat out here! Smile

The thing I love about caching is the interesting stories, the extra interest and attention you take when travelling, the sight-seeing, the history, the interests of the individual CO’s, the fantastic photo opportunities and sometimes finding places that even some locals don’t know about. I, like most cachers, look for more than a mint tin or a container under a bush. I appreciate the time that most CO’s take to construct a cache and write up a comprehensive listing and to create an interesting cache. I love travelling this big land of ours. I love taking the roads less travelled seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. I love the diversity of the land, the different scenes in the different seasons, the fresh air, the open plains, the lofty vistas and the magnificent waters. Dancing
I love every different town I visit. I love the different coffee shops I find. I love every different thing I photograph. I enjoy the times I cache with others but I usually cache on my own. I enjoy taking my time and meandering around rather than going from one cache to the next and so on… The geocaches are a great bonus of my travels. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher. Thank you for adding this historic cache to my real-life treasure hunt. I appreciate your efforts whitewebbs. Clapping

#GA5585 - 08:40; Day two of the Townsville Mega adventure with Sol de lune. The plan for the day is to cache our way north Walgett on a round about route via Lightning Ridge, Hebel, Diranbandi, St George and Moonie on to Surat. Plenty of water lying around and flowing down the Balonne River. Luckily we avoided any road closures, unlike our previous foray north when we had an unanticipated night in Goondawindi, but that's a whole other story. No problems today as we collected caches along the way, including the information we needed for this one. TFTC whitewebbs Very HappyClan Cerberus

We're staying in Lightning Ridge for a few days and now that I've knocked over the GC cachers here, it's time to turn my attention to the GA ones. We detoured here to visit Stanley on Sunday when we finished the yellow car tour. When I saw the nearby plaques, I went over and had a read of them, not realising that there was an opportunity to do a cache as well. Luckily, I could still remember most of what I read when it came time to do the history quiz.

Thanks for setting up this history cache whitewebbs.

Day 18 of our outback adventure which included QOGM 2019. Back into NSW today and really travelled further than I anticipated - St George to Dubbo. Will spend a couple of nights here and decide where to from here.
A little divergence into Lightning Ridge and ran into someone Greg went to school with while we looked at opals.
Thank goodness for GCA caches as the journey would have been quite boring

Travelling north after staying too long in the south. My fault, I wanted to attend Ozgeomuster - The Gong 2019. It was great, but we both have agreed we need to be out of the southern winter earlier in future. Result? We are heading north faster than usual and only stopping to grab some of the caches. I love history ones so this one got the nod. Although I photographed Stanley finding his cache was sacrificed.
Thanks for placing this cache Whitewebbs. We learn something new everyday.

Cairns trip 2019. Day 2. Today was shorter and took in Coonamble, Walagett and Lightning Ridge. I\'ll have to revisit Lightning Ridge one day. This rest area was quite busy, but it was too early for me to stop. Maybe one day I\'ll be able to stop at 13.00. A fun collection of plaques and an amazing sculpture over the road.

Thanks

It was nice to see that some more caches had been published around Lightning Ridge since we passed this way in early April. During previous visits we have stayed a couple of weeks at the Ridge.

We passed this one after leaving Dirranbandi earlier today. We have visited ‘Stanley’ three or four times in the past but never come to the rest stop, so it was good to learn a little more of the local history.

Many thanks for the hide WHITEWEBBS ClappingDancing

Found on our way to the Queensland Outback Geocaching Muster.
Stanley is an awesome structure with a great story.
And there were more stories on this side of the road.
Thank you Whitewebbs for bringing us here.

Almost forgot to log this cache. Now where did we put the answers ........... This handy free camp didn't exist last time we were at the Ridge. Plenty of parking meant we could pull in to find the answers for the cache without any problems. Never would have guessed that was how Lightning Ridge got its name.....thought it was something to do with the flash in opals. Very Happy TFTC whitewebbs

We visited Lightning Ridge in May 2017 on our way to a family wedding and stopped at this spot so had the information enabling us to answer the questions for this History cache. A fascinating place.

Thanks for this history cache Whitewebbs and for the chance to visit old memories.
