Description
Views of Copeton Dam and the spillway.
Copeton Dam, upstream from Bingara, was completed in 1976 and at 100% has a capacity of more than double Sydney Harbour. Water from the dam is released directly to the Gwydir River. The gate-controlled concrete chute spillway is capable of discharging 1,280,000 megalitres of water per day. A hydro-electric power station (completed in 1996) generates up to 21 megawatts of electricity from the flow of water leaving Copeton Dam.
Copeton Village and Dasey Town, two small villages in the valley, were flooded in the the making of the dam. In 1993 when the water level dropped to 3%, the remains of timber slab houses and graves were once again exposed.
Congratulations Tassie Trekkers - FTF
